Exclusive: NBC may make time for '24'

Categories: 24, News, Scoop

24-KeiferImage Credit: Kelsey McNeal/Fox24 may live to see another day after all.

Multiple sources confirm to me exclusively that 20th Century Fox has approached NBC about picking up the series should Fox opt to cancel it — and the Peacock is considering it. “There’s definitely some interest,” says an insider close to the talks.

Earlier this week, reports surfaced that 20th (a.k.a. the studio) and Fox (a.k.a. the network) are nearing a mutual decision to end the serial thriller after eight seasons due to declining ratings and rising costs.

A move to NBC — while still considered somewhat of a long shot given the hefty price tag — would likely delay 20th’s plans to launch a Jack Bauer film franchise. From a production standpoint, 24 execs have long maintained that it would ne next to impossible to make a movie while the series was still on the air.

Reps for 20th and NBC declined to comment.

What do you think? Should NBC swoop in and save the series? Or is it time for 24 to pack it in and head to the big screen? Sound off below!

I might be game for another day if the show can pick up.

    • Johnification

Ditto. Even through off-years I’ve enjoyed it as a sort of comfort food. Plus I like the symmetry of seasons 1-3 being one style, 4-6 another, and then 7-9 being something else. I’m game.

      • Jack Bauer

I agree… I think that Fox should just do season 9 to conclude the series. But I don’t think giving 24 to another network is such a great idea. It started at Fox, it should end on Fox. Not to mention, I don’t think I have ever changed to NBC’s channel. They have nothing good on!

      • Carol Seaver

Careful what you wish for – NBC were the idiots that gave up SOUTHLAND – what could be the next big thing on network tv for Leno.

      • ajaynyc1701

        Carlos,

I couldn’t agree with you more regarding Southland. Turner (TNT) already came out on top with this one even though the season just begun.

As for 24, NBC has to pick it up. I pray that they pick it up. For people like me that suffer from a serious case of the “mundays”, 24 is invaluable.

      • Sean

30 Rock is a good show on NBC, but I agree that they don’t have much. Their Thursday night lineup is pretty much all they have.

      • Matt

Carol, just from a ratings perspective, Southland was struggling, and it’s now flopping on TNT. I’m not so sure it was the next big thing.

      • Catherine

Lose Grey’s Anatomy .. KEEP 24 AND JACK BAUER.

      • roy ablacksingh-Toronto

I could be a meeting at work, shopping, whatever business meeting I may have, I always get home before 9pm so my wife and I can have dinner and watch Jack Bauer. I love it and always have, Jack is my real life hero. NBC will be crazy not to see it to the end, if not they are simply another ungrateful network. We love you Jack (Keifer). WHAT HAPPENED TO THE DRESS YOU WORE ON THE DAVID LETTERMAN SHOW, stop betting on NFL games Keifer…lol

    • Sally in Chicago

I don’t understand making a movie out of a recent TV show. Maybe a longish TV-movie, but not a BIG-screen movie; anybody remember the X Files? It was supposed to be a franchise sequel and it didn’t pan out on screen.
And Keifer is just not THAT good an actor. Replace him with someone with more charisma and acting chops.

      • CTUChief

oh no way…Keifer IS Jack Bauer. He’s got plenty of charisma and “acting chops”

      • James

Agreed with CTUChief. This isn’t just any TV show. 24 pretty much got the era of big screen actors on TV going for the 2000s. 24 would do fine on the big screen…ESPECIALLY when you remove the real time restriction that leads to hideous sub-plots as Dana Walsh.

      • dohrayme

What’s not to understand? A TV show or skit series in a show (like SNL) has been a gravy train for a Group of Suits. Said GoS want gravy train to continue so they hope to tap another medium/revenue source. Quality not so much a concern as big bucks dreams. Will discuss with fellow GoS echo chamber members to convince self of sufficient quality to fulfull the main goal: big bucks. Happens over and over and over.

      • ernie

He’s GREAT as Jack. Are you crazy?

      • kit

I agree. Keifer is the man but Oh How I could live without Dana Walsh!

      • Jack Bauer

Are you kidding me….!? Kiefer Sutherland is one of the greatest Canadian actors ever…and he’s even one of the best hollywood actors. And for crying out loud, he is 24! So don’t even talk about replacing him, because he is what makes 24 an amazing show!

      • Facetious

He looks much older than 24.

      • ajaynyc1701

        Sally,

You have no idea what you are talking about. I suggest you sit your ass down and watch a season or two of 24 before making those unbelievably outrageous remarks about K. Sutherland.

      • CTU24

That is just the most insane comment I have heard….get someone else to play Jack Bauer – you are out of your mind. And wow, Kiefer must really suck as an actor considering he has been around for 30 something years and has Oscars and Emmys. Your are obviously not a 24 fan…GOOD DAY

      • kathy C

Jack Bauer shouldn’t have “charisma”.. he’s gritty, violent. Not suppose to be James Bond.

      • Johnnysnot

Kiefer hasn’t won an Oscar. Check your facts. Yes he’s a good actor but don’t talk crap.

      • roy ablacksingh-Toronto

Sally in Chicago, I mean no disrespect, but is it 24 you watch or another show that might think is 24. Keifer Sutherland is a great actor and he does a great job on the show, maybe you are not cut out for action shows. Stick to maybe to soaps.

      • Ken

How can you say he is not a great actor… he won an emmy for his abilities!!

      • jack24ccttu

Kiefer is graet actor and if the make a movie it will be fantastic and alot of people will wathe it not like what I read from someone her 24 movie like xfiles movie i tell you 100% no no it’s good idea if NBC make another season for 24 cus 24 is the beast show right now

      • bill

Kiefer is an even better actor than his father and he IS Jack Bauer. It is his signature role. (And I’m old enough to remember him as a vampire in The Lost Boys.) If NBC takes it, good for them. As for the X-Files comparison, the first movie was a winner because it dovetailed with the tv plot and came in during Season 5 when the series was getting a lot of love in the trade press. The second X-Files movie was just bad. That and the fact that “The Dark Knight” came out at the same time. I don’t think the creative team behind 24 is going to repeat Chris Carter’s mistake.

      • John

It figures that someone from Chicago would make an absolutely CRASS remark like this!!

    • Rock Golf

Whatever they decide I hope they do it quickly because DAMMIT, WE’RE RUNNING OUT OF TIME!!!!

      • krayzeman

        funny…

      • kay

        Haha! Hilarious! :D

      • Tom

Chloe! I need this information NOW! THERE’S NO TIME! DAMNIT! SAMIR (or insert any terrorist name) IS DEAD! DAMNIT!

      • newsongweekly

YOU’RE GONNA HAVE TO TRUST ME!

      • marcia

We need Jack to keep saving America…SOMEONE HAS TO!!!!

      • GreenMeansGo

        Copy that.

      • V

        I’m laughing

    • brandy

Yes! I’ll watch this amazing show as long as it lets me.

      • jsarv

agreed,, I love bauer and never miss a beat of the show even when the plots get crazy,, it is the only show on tv that you truly never know what will happen next

      • tai shan

I think 24 is one of the most spell binding shows on tv n they should do whatever they have 2 to keep it going

    • Tyler

All of you who are saying that 24 is on its last legs because this season is bad or to let it die, I would wait a few more weeks. The reason is I found an interview with Annie Wersching on G4 and she says some very cool things near the end of it. I’ll admit, this season hasn’t been very good to me either so far. But, Annie said near the end of the interview that this next hour (3am-4am) is the last one of her “nap”. Apparently, she’ll be back in 4am-5am with a gun. That’s right. A gun. Finally. She also said that things get back to season 7 style Jack and Renee. This is what I’ve been waiting to see in season 8 so far. So I wouldn’t say let it die yet. It might be just about to get good. (Just a note: I already posted this comment but apparently the web site is sorting them from oldest to newest for some strange reason and I want people to see this)

      • Jamie

Why would we want “season 7 style Jack and Renee”? Renee was easily the worst part of last season, and she hasn’t been any better this time around

      • Austen

I agree…Renee was old and boring last season! Enough of her! If ’24′ can ‘live’ without Tony, then it can live without Renee! Want romance? bring back Audrey!

      • Dex

Finally! There are other people that don’t like ‘deer in the headlights is the only acting expression I have’ Renee.

Okay, this season she’s added ‘disturbed deer in the headlights’ so she’s up to two modes of acting.

      • t3hdow

Renee was the worst thing about 24 season 7? Uh, no? That goes to the absurd First Gentlemen abduction plot line and Dubaku’s American girlfriend. Even at her worst, Renee wasn’t as bad as those two.
Besides, I’ll take Jack and Renee any day instead of Dana and Cole. I’ve never cared less for any two CTU agents than that couple.
And thanks Tyler for the optimistic news. I feel the same way with this season.

      • anee

loved Renee and thought she was the best of s.7. Glad she’s back soon!

      • Autumn Gray

I loved Renee, and still do. I loved her character last season, and I loved her character this season. But I’m with t3hdow on this–better Jack and Renee than Dana and Cole.

      • jsarv

jack should have delivered a fatal shot to reneas head last season when he shot her and buried her alive,, that would have been much better for the show

    • Gerry

We’ve loved to watch 24 from the very first episode! My vote is to keep it on the air, and with NBC I bet it’ll be even better.

    • Jason Lewis

NBC would be stupid if they DIDN’T pick up “24″. NBC Universal isn’t doing so great last year or this year at their financial core and success rate. If they pick up “24″ I am confident the ratings will increase and help NBC in the long-run.

    • Screenwriter

      Bring Back CHase!

    • Carl

I stopped watching when they made Tony bad. Or good. Or bad. Or something. Snoooooze.

    • tom oneill

Don’t kill 24 now. Jack is th “man”. Fox needs to suck it up and add anothe season. There crtainly is enough material in real life they could work with.

    • Juan

I would love to see another season of 24 I say go 10 seasons and then end it with a 24 move. but please please leave it on fox

      • L

I completely agree with you! all the great shows for for 10 seasons or more! Do a season 10 then the sky’s the limit to do whatever you want for the movie!

  • Joe

24 moving to NBC would be bad news for Heroes.

    • mac

Hasn’t Heroes been cancelled? I am ligitimately (sp?) curious.

      • Abseaz

Nope, not yet. Although it’s highly expected to be canceled (For obvious reasons) I’ve read reports of it getting a (very) short season next year just to wrap things up. Or they might just do a DVD to give each character an ending. But nothing’s been confirmed. Yet!

      • MC

They haven’t made a decision on Heroes yet, but I love both shows, so I hope both get to continue. Also agree with Johnification in that I like the continuity between seasons 1-3, 4-6, and what will hopefully be 7-9.

      • vja

HEROES has a lot more problems than 24. It hasn’t been good for quite some time.

    • Taylor

Agreed, I dread the day this will happen if this is legit.

    • ajaynyc1701

Actually having 24 and HEROES go back to back on a Monday night may just be what NBC needs to rule Monday primetime. Look what it has done for FOX w/ “House” preceding “24”.

  • PAUL

    YES YES YES PLEASE!!!!

  • Stephen

I would rather see the show end this season on FOX and then make the movie. Each season is pretty self-contained so I doubt we would have to worry about this season ending with no resolution or anything if FOX cancels it.

    • m.

Well there have been minor cliffhangers in the season end, like Palmer’s assassination attempt or chinese tooking Jack. Season 8 started good, but past 2-3 episodes have been weak. Also the series are starting to be too formulatic (a lot of times you know what will happen).

      • Joel

I actually thought the last 2 episodes were an improvement, and so did my parents. Whenever this stupid storyline that Katee Sackhoff is involved in is done, then hopefully the season will really pick up. As for a move to NBC, if that’s the only way to get another season, then sure, but they need to do a nonstop season just like FOX has done. And they need to ensure it gets the full season aired. But my preference is for it to stay on FOX.

      • cookie

I’m wondering if the last few episodes were “weak”, if you say so, because they knew they were up against the Olympics and didn’t want people to miss much. Just a thought

  • step

    LET IT DIE

    • James

      nooooo

    • 24 blows

I agree the show was good for the 1st 2 seasons, now it is the same every season….this just proves to me that NBC has no idea on what a good show is (Southland).

      • James

Except TNT might be dropping Southland, too.

    • Austen

      noooo…24 is my Monday nights!

  • Mike

Nooooo, why on earth would NBC spend so much money trying to keep alive a series that is clearly on its last breath? NBC needs to cultivate its own products. If it picks up 24, it puts a damper on the fresh, exciting shows currently on their schedule like Chuck, Park & Rec, and Community.

    • GJ

Because NBC has NO good dramas. Getting 24 would help

      • Q

They HAD a good drama. It was called Southland.

      • IQ

Stop dwelling it’s already been picked up and is doing worse than it was, I agree NBC has no good dramas…but I’d rather they just end it now and start the movies…NBC would do something dumb like put it on a haitus

      • Nathan

24 is past its prime. So is NBC. A perfect match?

      • t3hdow

        LOL Nathan.

      • JK

Yeah Q seiously atleast your show got picked up by another network while great unique shows like Pushing Daises (thanks alot ABC) aren’t even given an afterthought
        Shut the F UP!

    • MB

NBC has five hours to fill. “24″ would be a great fit, if NBC has the good sense to pick it up. And it has a much more flexible schedule and can place “24″ in a more favorable slot.

  • Rachael

Sure. Move it to NBC and start going backwards in time in order to do seasons with the old characters who were actually good, like Tony and Michelle.

    • evan

      amrn

  • Clarissa

I think the best thing would be for Fox or NBC to give it one final season just so everything could be wrapped up nicely.

If NBC does pick it up, I’m curious to see how the show would change.

  • James

Just hoping i’ll be able to enjoy 24 for another year

    • James

I’m ready for the show to move on to the big screen. After the Dana Walsh Syndrome, I just want the show to die with dignity.

  • John

Of course NBC would want this. Makes perfect sense. [/sarcasm]

  • kim

As much as I love “24″ on TV, I would love to see it come to the “big screen”!

  • Tony

Please please NBC pick this show up. It has better ratings than everything on your network!

    • kona

I agree with TONY. MOVE IT TO NBC.IT IS A GREAT SHOW AND IT WOULD GIVE ME A REASON TO WATCH NBC.

  • melbye

For heaven’s sake, just let it go. 8 seasons is a long enough run, and considering of bad the show is this year i don’t see season 9 being any better

    • madscntst

Ditto. They are just recycling old ideas by this point, and I don’t think that continuing on another network is going to make it fresh again.

  • Brad

    You are worried about HEROES?
    are you kidding me?

  • Divagurl

    YES!!!!!
