Will the third time be the charm for CBS and Alex O’Loughlin?
Undeterred by the back-to-back failures of Moonlight and Three Rivers, The Eye net is courting O’Loughlin to headline the freshly-greenlit remake of Hawaii Five-O, sources confirm.
“Talks are ongoing,” says the insider. “CBS really wants to do another series with him.”
The original Five-O — which starred Jack Lord as Det. Steve McGarrett — ran on CBS from 1968-1980. The update is being shepherded by Fringe writer-producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, as well as CSI: NY e.p. Peter Lenkov.
At press tour last week, CBS president Nina Tassler reiterated her strong desire to stay in business with O’Loughlin. “We love him,” she said, “and want him to stay around a long time.”
What do you think? Should CBS book O’Loughlin for Five-O? Or are you still holding out hope for a Moonlight resurrection? Sound off below!

I think O’Loughlin really has to be careful here. Remakes are not typically a healthy career decision, despite networks trying to force them to work, and he’s got a great set-up here with CBS loving him. Another cancelled show might kill his buzz. I’d say, go for something with great writing that ISN’T a remake, because they just aren’t typically strong enough to succeed. (And even if they’re fantastic, people write them off early. I know I do.)
Very true – the track record of remakes is abysmal.
That being said, I’m pretty sure AO’L is desperate for work so he’ll likely take the role.
Well he has a movie with J.Lo on CBS films
ITA, Alden. Also, Alex needs to first get a commitment from CBS him a good time slot, no more crappy Friday, Saturday or Sunday night slot before he agrees to sign any more deal with CBS.
A Sunday timeslot is very good. Amazing Race, 60 Minutes, and Cold Case did/have done great there for years and years. Three Rivers failed because it stank. As for Friday, Ghost Whisperer-Medium-Numbers have all done well enough there, two of those shows for five or more years. Moonlight failed because it stank. O’Laughlin has not had a show regularly airing on Sat. So there goes your poor argument.
As for timeslot commitment, why should he get one when hardly anyone, even BIG stars, does?
Lila – IMHO I do think that they did make a mistake by putting a show that was new on a night after the football game. It is easier for a show that has a following to be on later than scheduled. Really, Rivers did not stand a chance with being on later than scheduled every Sunday. Also IMHO Moolight did not stink. It actually had the same ratings that Ghoost Whispers has and they do not cancel that show. If the show was so bad why is there petitions to have that show come back. People still fighting for it and it has been over a year and a half later. CBS screwed up by cancelling that show. They would have been before the trend but they refuse to admit their mistake.
Alex is nothing like McGarrett. I think Collin Farrell should play Steve and Ryan Phillipie as Danny.
I would really like to see another Hawaii Five-0 series made, but i think it would be a mistake to make an attempt to re create Steve McGarrett and the member’s of his original team, with new actors. I have never seen a TV series remake ever be a success. My suggestion to cbs and the creators of the new five-0 TV series. I think the new show will most likely be a success with a whole new cast of charactors, and the show set in presant times. Yes Create and produce a new Five series. But do not attempt to create the original McGarrett, and his original team.
First choice more Moonlight! But if they can find a vehicle for him-anything!- that works, I’ll watch whatever it is! He’s awesome!
why would he trust CBS again?
I’ll watch him in anything but I do wish they’d ressurrect Moonlight. On another network.
I think he has a contract with the network hence he’s kinda stuck with whatever they decide to put him in. I think this show will be a flop and too many of those in a row is a good way to destroy a career. I love him, so I hope either his movie career takes off, or they find a better vehicle for him.
I miss moonlight so much
I miss Moonlight so much too – I watch my dvd’s over and over and really hoped for another series or movie. But I would watch anything that had Alex in it and so far have watched everything I could find
I agree!
I *knew* it! I totally said Alex when the HAWAII FIVE-O news first broke and there was a question about which actor they were looking at.
I’d give the show a try with Alex on it
I agree, I am a huge Alex fan. He is very HOT and talented i’m glad CBS is giving him another chance. He diserves it. Alex ROCKS!!!!!
I will take Alex anyway I can get him, but yes, you called it, I love Moonlight first, foremost, always and forever. The whole ensemble cast was marvelous. Still wish it hadn’t been a victim of the writer’s strike.
I am a HUGE Alex O’Loughlin fan. And I grew up loving Hawaii Five-O. But I would prefer to see Alex strut his Vampiric self in a resurrected Moonlight series!!!!!
He already did that. Time to move on!
They should bring Moonlight back…he was so perfect for it
I would actually like to see him in something with his true accent…so hawt!
When he was in The Shield he was great…totally miscast by CBS
Why can’t CBS find a decent project for this magnetic actor? He deserves something original and new–these remakes are a bad idea. Hasn’t NBC proven with multiple failures (Knight Rider, etc.) that they just don’t work?
Naprostá pravda
Stop trying to make Alex O’Loughlin happen…it’s not going to happen.
I agree. He hasn’t gotten ratings in anything he’s done so far. Now, he’s gonna bring down Hawaii Five-O with him.
I have to disagree. I think once they find the right fit for him, he’s going to be huge. He already has a pretty good fanbase as it is. His movie with J. Lo should make him more high profile as well. Ladies love him!
I think he’s only beloved by graying housewives, and apparently not enough of them watch CBS.
My 14 yr old daughter does not have gray hair nor is she a housewife.. she likes him, liked Moonlight and Three Rivers
I don’t know about that. I’m a teenage guy and, whilst I won’t probably watch his programmes, I have to admit that he has that ‘it’ factor and is bound to find a hit to match his charisma. Here’s to him pulling a Jeffrey Donovan and finding a ‘Burn Notice’.
My fourteen year old granddaughter and her mob of friends are devoted fans of Mr. O’Loughlin, so you don’t know what your’re talking about.
LOL…spoken like someone who has never set eyes on Alex!
I am a 30 year old working executive, not a housewive, and I love him. I loved Moonlight (even though I am NOT into the Vampire thing). I also don’t jump on the Hollywood bandwagon with the likes of Pitt, Cruise and Clooney, as they are boring to me. But Alex is great!
Alex O’Loughlin isn’t the problem with the shows he’s in. Moonlight’s problem was it was in the dead zone of Friday, it came before the big vampire craze and had back stage issues. Namely, unable to keep an EP which casues sudden changes to the overall story arcs.
Three Rivers was just terrible. A bad, awful show who only got ratings BECAUSE of Alex O’Loughlin.
So, with the right show, I’m sure Alex O’Loughlin can succeed and have a fine career in TV or movies. I mean, heck, people said the same thing about Simon Baker after his second flop and look where he is today.
Ahhh, Brent, I could not have said it better myself.
And BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO to CBS for the stupid idea of a remake. This whole ‘branding’ and ‘franchise’ craze is really getting on my nerves. Get some original characters and creative writers and see what you can do without labeling it ‘Hawaii 5-0′ and have someone try to fill Jack Lord’s shoes.
Completely agree. I’ve also said before that Alex cannot be blamed for the failure of 3Rivers, a show without a spark of life in it. Alex was the only reason I watched it.
He’s already ‘happened’, J.G. He has a fanbase of women of all ages.
more moonlight! Absolutely loved that show!
I want more “Moonlight”. Alex had me waiting to get bitten everytime he was onscreen. That show would be a hit now with so many people discovering how hot vampires can be, I always said that show was ahead of its time. While I would watch anything with Alex in it, I agree with others in saying he’d better be careful about accepting a remake. Most of those kinds of shows have bombed, it’s very difficult to capture the same feeling about a series that was a big hit in its day, and unless CBS can get some super-great scripts, I’d be very wary of it. You’d think someone would know how to market this guy, he’s got all of the things to make him a hot commodity, I hope the right producer comes along who knows how to get this charismatic actor into a great series.
If Moonlight cannot be resurected.
It would be a great fit for Alex in Hawaii Five O. Jason Dohring as Dano?
Exactly!! That was my first thought as well. Even if you didn’t like Moonlight, you can’t deny that Alex and Jason had great chemistry.
I hope CBS also casts Katherine Moennig and Daniel Henney in the show. Both of them are good actors, and like Alex, they should get a shot at success.
Oh Mona, you read my mind! ditto. First choice ML, but if not then H50 would bee cool. JD as Dano.
OMG, that is what I was thinking. they had great chemistry together on ML and I would love to see Jason Dohring on TV again. and, while they are at it, bring Sophia Miles HI-5-0 as a newspaper reporter or something like that!
Ya let’s make it a laughing stock!
I’d love to see Moonlight return, but I’m not gonna hold my breath. That’ll require CBS and Nina T. admitting they made a mistake by cancelling it in the first place.
Alex in Hawaii Five-O? I’m so there. I’ll watch him in anything. If he’s in it, I just pray CBS puts this remake on a good night.
Doing a pilot doesn’t guarantee CBS will pick it up. I loved the show when it was on long ago. I am trying to picture Alex in an exotic setting like Hawaii and the possibilities. However, I do agree that remakes have not done well in the past. I was hoping a casting for the Criminal Minds spin off. But this would put him at the helm of the star of a show again rather than one of a large ensemble like Three Rivers. I think he does better when his roles are more physical and this one would be.
I would love to see him back in Moonlight. As it has been said many times, the show was a little ahead of its time. Perhaps Moonlight on a hipper network would do better.
Uh Moonlight itself wasn’t hip! It was ahead of the vampire curve and would probably now be behind it by the time any “resurrection” came about. Bad idea for many reasons, one of which is O’Loughlin’s career. Plus it was riddled with inner turmoil. Next.
Sad as it is, I think you’re right Julie. In a perfect world we’d still have Moonlight and Alex. But the reality is that it’s over. There were so many strikes against it we’re lucky we got what we did.
Yes!! I think casting Alex as the lead in the new Hawaii Five O is a brilliant idea!! The sooner the better!!
Moonlight was not a bomb/ It was the best vampire series on and CBS choose to cancel it because ??????/ Dont know. It had everything/ Look at all the vampires shows and movies that are out now and Moonlight was the first/bring Moonlight back/
You are so right. Moonlight was the best Vampire series ever. Much better than Twilight. CBS made a terrible mistake. I watch it at least once a week on the DVD.
