'Eastwick' boss to fans: 'I'm furious, too!'

Categories: Eastwick, News

eastwick_lHas news of Eastwick’s cancellation left you wanting to saw the president of ABC in half? You’re not alone. “I’m pretty furious, too,” vents executive producer Maggie Friedman. “We have such an amazing group of writers and actors — best people I’ve ever worked with. None of us can believe this is really happening.”

Adding insult to injury, the network pulled the plug so abruptly that Friedman won’t have a chance to tweak the 13th episode to give fans any of that magical closure stuff. “We’re smack in the middle of several insanely juicy stories,” Friedman sighs. “And so we do not get a chance to wrap things up in a bow. Which is killing me.”

If there’s a silver lining, it’s that the remaining episodes are expected to air as planned. “I believe [ABC] is going to air the rest of our run,” says Friedman, “and I think people should tune in anyway because our best episodes are in there. We were really hitting our stride.

“The magic was getting crazy, the storylines were getting really exciting and sexy and dangerous,” the exec elaborates. “I [just] wish we could’ve given the fans — and ourselves — real closure.”

    :-(
I’m cursed..almost every new show I watch get axed.. It was cheesey but I liked it.

    • annie

I liked it, too. There are so many bad dramas this season. This show had some flavor to it. I am sad to see it go.

      • wtf

Umm what was this show about?? The 1990 movie that Jack N. starred in?? Who cares if it is canceled…this show blows

      • Steve

Obviously the people who commented ahead of you cared. I never got why people say negative things about a show when they havent even seen it. I never watched eastwick but i feel bad for the people who did and now dont get any ending at all.

      • Avery

Thank you Steve. You are nice :) . I am sad to see this show not get the ending it deserves. Maybe in its last episodes more people will watch it and then we can get closure

    • Jenn

I’m SO bummed.. this is my fav show! :(

      • michelle

I enjoyed this show as well. I finally found a show I could get excited about and did mind staying up later to watch it.I felt I had found a show for me similar to people who follow shows like greys anatomy, house, that are good, but not my thing .

    • krlnsa

I love this show! Too bad it is getting cancelled! Maybe if they had put it in a better time slot, but I guess they are just brainless wonders at ABC!

    • Diane

I watched it for Matt Dallas. But, now that they killed him off I won’t be watching the show anymore.

      • Zera

Agreed. I stopped watching when they killed off Kyle XY.

    • BETH

I CAN’T BELEIVE THEY ARE GETTING RID OF THAT SHOW! I HOPE FOX PICKS IT UP!!!!

      • Elle

HAHAHAH FOX??? Yea right!! They are just as bad as ABC in the ‘Cancel every good show’ category!

        DANG!

    • Lisa

I know what you mean MP–if I like a tv show it’s almost guaranteed to be canceled!! It was cheesy–but good cheesy, like pizza!

    • krystal

i love Eastwick ABC is stupid bring it back or at least let it finish give us what we want East wick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Jen

I truly feel for the fans. Not much worse than being left hanging. I’d spare some bitterness if I had it, but I’m still stewing over Firefly 7+ years now.

    • JenC

Jen I’m totally with you on Firefly.

    • craig

the worst was “Soap” way back when..Jessica Tate is still in front of that firing squad!

      • Jackie

I’m still peeved about Galen and the astronauts being left floating on a (not very sturdy) raft in the ocean when Planet of the Apes was cancelled. Boy, can I hold a grudge or what?

    • RJF

I am still stewing over Firefly and Terminator….now eastwick.

      • Brey

Both those shows came to mind when I found out about Eastwick. I will be eternally pissed about Firefly. Was it really so impossible to let any of show have decent ending that the fans aren’t begging for more of what they will never get

    • Alichat

I’m with you on that. I still miss Firefly.

As for Eastwick, I wasn’t that impressed with it. Had high hopes, but it was just meh. I’m more upset over Dollhouse being cancelled.

      • Benes

I still get a little sad when I break out my Firefly dvds…..gone way too soon.

  • Kerry

WTF, ABC! Why not let them film the last episode? This sucks. Why bother watching the rest of the season if we won’t see the most important episode of all–the finale?!

    • MichyGeary

I think you misunderstand. You will still see the 13th episode, but since they didn’t know the show was going to be canceled, the story wasn’t given a chance to finish. What will be the final episode was not written to be.

      • HRGIRL

I think since she said “film” she does understand.

  • Kim

I love this dang show. It was the perfect kooky show to watch after Modern Family and Cougar Town! UGH!!!

    • Jacinthe

I absolutely agree! I love Modern Family and Cougar Town. Eastwick is the perfect show to go to bed after, I think they could’ve kept it going for a good couple of years. Wednesday is suppose to be my night to relax and have time away from the hubby:) I know so many people in my area that are upset as well:(

    • sylvia

I am with u there! I loved the show too! the show was awesome! I will watch it til the end!

  • shayna

I’m still furious!! And we aren’t getting any closure….seriously?! I would boycott abc if I didn’t watch all the other shows

    • Ivy

Shayna, just don’t watch any of their NEW shows and don’t watch the replacements when you favorite is cancelled or ends. I am down to DH, GA, B&S, PP and UB…as they are gone, so am I.

    • charlie

are you a Nielsen Viewer. if you don’t know what that means, then you are not. and if you are not then you can watch or not what you wish and it doesn’t matter to anyone.

seriously. the networks need the money from advertisers and those advertisers only care about the Nielsen rating scores. that is the base of all transactions. Eastwick clearly wasn’t making what was promised and didn’t recover their budget and ABC is cutting their losses. sucks but there you go.

      • Elle

Well, they ovbiously have the WRONG people as Nielsen Viewers. =(

  • MichyGeary

Cancelation timing is the worst. The show’s writers should at least be given the chance to end the story how they want.

    Eastwick movie? Haha.

  • Marie

ABC sucks….they do this to every show I end up watching on their network. Seriously considering boycotting ABC because I always end up heartbroken. They never give the great shows a chance!

    • April

Maybe the CW will pick it up…..I am so sad!! It was a great show! The only reason I watched ABC, I never watch any of their shows…EVER….Now I am back to the other networks I guess!

    • Sarah

I agree! ABC always manages to kill really amazing shows either by giving them bad timeslots or moving them around so much the audience can’t find it (ie ALIAS), yet they are surprised when viewership is down! Then without giving it a chance they cancel it without giving the audience a wrap-up episode, leaving the audience disappointed never knowing how everything resolves. Shame on you ABC!

    • Heidi

I don’t get why they can’t make viewers happy by allowing the writers/cast to, as Maggie says, “Tweak” the last filmed episode so that the storylines have closure.

  • Elizabeth

It’s not shocker that ABC is pulling the plug. ABC is the worst offender of cancelling shows that shouldn’t be. I watched/loved Eastwick; tuned in because of the cast/storyline and will watch the remaining episodes but once again ABC has disappointed by another bonehead move. There’s a reason I only watch 5 shows (6 if you include Eastwick). I’m sick and tired of networks wanting me to spend my time watching their programs only to cancel them – what ever happend to giving the customers what they want? Seriously?!?!

    • AJ

ABC has given plenty of shows the opportunity to air and gain viewers. If they can’t find viewers, they’re going to be canceled. No one was beating down doors to air Pushing Daisies, Eli Stone, Dirty Sexy Money, etc. ABC is taking a chance with these “different” shows. You have to give them credit for that. It’s better than CBS just showing procedurals.

      • JenniferH

But they didn’t promote this at all! The Forgotten is much inferior show but I saw advertisements left and right for it, and look it’s getting 5 more eps. I only saw promos for Eastwick during Cougartown. That’s it. ABC screwed Eastwick; they didn’t actually give it a chance. Very few people even knew it was on. I am furious.

      • Elizabeth

While this maybe true, any network that doesn’t give a show a full fighting chance – is wrong. I was disappointed by the cancellation of Pushing Daisies & Eli Stone – those shows had a good run at getting viewers. We’re only 2 months into the new season. Why not wait until the winter break when they’ll bring out new programs. And for the love of television offer their viewers closure – don’t just cut them off at the knees.

      • Remus

I think it’s completely unfair to blame ABC for being the Network That Cancels… the reason they’re doing is this, because they’re the only network that actually produces innovative and different TV shows. And these shows don’t always find an audience and then they get so bad ratings that they just have to be cancelled. Eastwick is another example of that: the ratings were TERRRRIBLE. Worst ratings of any show this fall! There was no way it could go on.

ABC needs to be given credit for trying! CBS never needs to cancel anything, because it never does anything new: it’s shows are all the same, crime procedurals with only a very few expections. There’s an audience for this kind of stuff, so they always bring in decent ratings and don’t get cancelled. ABC tries different and original things and they just don’t always work out.

      • Alan

Cancellations are a part of the TV, biz, yes. But I just wish networks would give shows enough notice to film one more “wrap up” episode. I’m talking about shows in general – cancellations without warning are a bummer. That’s what makes we worried for Ugly Betty (it’s also on ABC).

      • amj

Actually I was totally aware that this show was on and watched it once but didn’t draw me away from Top Chef that’s for sure! I do however miss Pushing Daisies and Eli Stone. But as for ABC they let many shows stay. Pushing Daisies was cancelled for excessive cost which if you had seen it you would know why, sets not actors. I won’t miss this show, I couldn’t get over the idea of taking one of my favorite movies with A level actresses and Jack Nicholson and try and reinvent it. All I could say was why? Why, would you reinvent my favorite movie? I will not miss. Just sad that no resolution will come to the loyal viewers. I know that stinks, been there before…!

      • I Miss Eli

I understand that money is always the bottom line for a network, but Eli Stone was not as expensive to produce as Pushing Daisies and it averaged around 7 million viewers which just isn’t that bad for a new show. There are a lot of other shows that remain on other networks year after year that don’t even have that many viewers. It just feels like ABC is trigger happy and they don’t stand behind their own products, unlike some other networks.

    • Annie Mahle

I strongly disagree. ABC has one of the highest cancel rates and is not the only network to produce new shows – 30 Rock, Chuck, Heroes, The Office, The Philantrhopist on NBC. Yes, CBS is great at procedurals, but they work even if they are all the same basic idea. There’s a reason people tune into them.
And it maybe unfair to say that ABC is the Network that Cancels, but how fair is it to cancel a show that’s barely had a go. Even the procedurals on CBS need a warm up period.
I agree not all shows will work out, however if you’re going to put the money into producing the program at least give it an ending – that goes on any of the networks. Is it really worth it to leave their customers hanging – what ever happened to building loyalty -again not just for ABC.

    • Ivy

Unless you are in their prized demographic, they really don’t care what you want to watch. It’s not about numbers, it’s about ratings and share in 18-34 and 18-49…mostly the former.

  • Sommery

I agree that things were just getting interesting. It took a while to warm up, kinda like a book with slow early chapters and you keep putting it down. But around chapter 4 you realize you’ve been reading half the night and don’t want to stop reading to go to bed. We’re just getting to chapter 4 and I’m very disappointed that we won’t get any closure.

  • jpgilmore

to be honest , they knew the show wasn’t getting good ratings and they also knew that episode 13 could be the last episode so…Anyway i’m sorry for the fans , i know how they feel

    • Valley Girl

You have a point. I always wondered how far in advance scripts are written… and, in a case like this, where something COULD be canceled before back nine is ordered, if writers ever think of Plan B as far as episode 13 being The End. Closure would have been nice!

  • Mr. Wu

Hollywood, long out of original ideas, takes a movie made 20+ years ago and “re-imagines” it for television. Did we NOT see this getting canceled before it ever aired? It could have been the best thing since twinkies, but no one was gonna watch it because it aged itself with THAT title. Sucks, but its true.

    • Bailey

Mr. Wu, hate to burst your bubble, but Eastwick was *actually* made from The Witches of Eastwick, a novel by John Updike. There have been various adaptations because Updike’s novel was fantastic, but this wasn’t a “reimagining” of a movie.

Visual media made from books tends to do well. It’s too bad this one didn’t.

      • nunya

Bailey, hate to burst YOUR bubble, but so what if the show was *actually* made from the book…all most people remember is the cheesy movie from the 80’s. I agree with Mr. Wu that this was bound to get canceled. I watched one full episode & even gave it a 2nd chance with another ep but it never held my interest. Sorry but the show was super lame.

    • Sharona

Maybe for you…I knew there was a movie, but I’d never seen it (I was 10 when it came out), so that was pretty much a non-issue. That said, I didn’t know anyone else who watched it, and that’s never a good sign. Too bad, because the cast was enjoyable and the writers seemed to be figuring things out.

  • Eastwick Fan

I’m sorry to see the show go. The characters were really beginning to grow. I hope another network is smart enough to pick up the series. I would gladly watch on another network if ABC is so short sighted.

  • denise

Not surprised… It was only an expensively made Charmed… This show was not original and the writing sucked the most.

    • TS

Denise, did you even watch the show? Frankly, it is better than Charmed! A lot better.

    • amj

Are you serious? This show was not based on Charmed but rather a book and a movie that predated Charmed by decades. Even though I wasn’t into the show, I know that it was done before Charmed. Based on your comment, you would be saying Charmed was not original. That it took after this book or this movie. And, Charmed was an awesome show by the way! Loved it!

  • craig

    Michael,

I don’t mean this harshly, but it’s hard to convery tone in written form, but it’s not as if you supported the show. You barely ever talked about it even though Rina Mimoun wrote 2 eps and I know you are a fan of hers. The ratings were really bad and it had a compatible female lead in with Cougar Town that it was fumbling badly. Leno was beating it 18-49. So while I am a fan of the shwo and do wish ABC maybe gave it a one time slot after DH (Although that didn’t work for CASHMERE MAFIA) I can’t really fault ABC. I think it’s uncool to fan the flames at ABC. Of course she’s pissed what showrunner isn’t when their show is cancelled. I feel for her and cast and crew, but unfortunately it’s teh nature of teh biz. Every media writer expected it to be canned. Now if they order more HANK, I am right there with ya.

    • Marie

Well, it didn’t help that Cashmere Mafia was a horrible show with horrible characters. I only watched 2 episodes, during which I kept hoping all the characters, especially the redhead, would get hit by a car.

  • Sean

I wish the CW would pick up this show. It goes with quite a bit of their programming (Supernatural, Vampire Diaries, Smallville for the occult angle) (Gossip Girl, Life Unexpected and Top Model for the appeals to female viewers side). I think it would be a good fit over there and I’m sure could capture the 2-3 ratings that most of the CW lineup gets now.

    • Jessica

Good point! I hope they do!

    • nunya

That’s actually a great idea…too bad the numnuts at the CW can’t come up with the idea themselves.

    • amy

I actually thought the same thing like 3 weeks ago…i think it would be a great fit…it has a really loyal fan base…i think it would do well at Cw

    • TS

Me too! I would gladly switch to watching it on The CW. I already watch Vampire Diaries there and it seems like such a great fit!

  • CMU

Sign the petition to save Eastwick! It’s worth a shot… http://www.petitiononline.com/saveeas1/petition.html

    • Upset

I would love to sign the petition but it should at least be written in proper English. It will have more impact that way.

    • Ivy

As a Men In Trees fan and a Life on Mars fan, it isn’t worth your time or effort.

Hey, at least I still watch shows on ABC (Always Being Cancelled). I haven’t picked up a new show on Fox since they destroyed Reunion. So long ago that David Anabele is on Brothers & Sisters and Chyler Leigh is on Grey’s! Big Fox is only good for sports.

      • charlie

reunion wasn’t that great to me but i did feel for those that were watching because the story wasn’t finished. that was the kind of show that the net should have both as a one season event and promised to air the whole season. like a 24 hour mini series. then perhaps it would have been more tightly written AND gotten closure.

  • Not to be rude, but….

Maybe if it didn’t take until *episode 13* for the magic to “get crazy” and the “storylines to get really exciting and sexy and dangerous” they wouldn’t have this problem.

    • jv

Sure, Not to be rude, but, let’s just do what Flash Forward did, tell everything in the first episode, dumb it down for the slow people, and just call it a day… Umm, no. The whole idea is to build up and not blow the whole wad in the first three episodes. If they started doing crazy magic by episode 4, where does the show have left to go? Might as well cancel it after episode 6, then! No, the show was on a good trajectory, and I’m pissed that once again ABC is offing a good show with great potential before they even give it a chance. WTF, ABC?!?

      • LiLa

How about Seinfeld? It didn’t really make it big until Season 4. By today’s standards, it may never have been given that chance.

    • KEVIN

Sometimes it takes time, look at the Big Bang Theory, it was not very good the first season, and it consistently gets better every week, it is now one of the best sitcoms on TV

      • Stephanie

While some shows do take time to build momentum, BBT is not one of them. It has been genius since Ep 1.

      • Steve

I actually liked the first season of big bang theory more than this season. Not that this season has been bad or anything.

      • amj

Agreed with the others! Big Bang has always been awesome! I often tell people that the Big Bang pilot episode was one of the funniest things shown on television that year. Big Bang is getting better but it was already great! Big Bang was always genious! Only character as funny as Sheldon is Barney on HIMYM.

  • Amy

Loved the show. I cant understand why they go and cancel such a funny mysterious show.

  • DVD Vision Japan

I am still shocked at the decision. Move the show to ABC Family why don’t you! I’ll take 13 episodes a year.
Let’s have the networks adapt the 3 TV seasons concept like just about every other country! Then they can ensure that every 13 episodes, we (the fans) can have closure. That way, if the show fails, they only have 13 episodes and can still charge a decent ad rate.

    • kibler

Ahhh, ABC Family… now there’s an idea.

  • tvtimepodcast’s Tim

I saw the writing on the wall with last week’s ep. I missed it. Went to abc.com – not there. Went to hulu- not there. ABC had given up on the show already. Too bad. I guess the ‘interuptions’ during sweeps should have been my 1st clue. lol I liked the show. I won’t watch now. Thanks so much ABC. Too bad the show didn’t have a vampire. lol

  • Jen

I’m upset that they are canceling the show, but I thought this would happen. It just seems like the type of show that would get canceled to me, even though a lot of people, including me, like it.

I’m just sad I won’t get to see Darren Criss on TV anymore D:

    • Jen

Agreed. No weekly Darren Criss fix is going to be sad indeed.

  • Michael

Eastwick was just the victim of being on a tough network. The hard fact of the matter is that ABC has to make room for Lost in the spring. So they have to get rid of something. Since all their other shows are returning ones that have proven themselves valuable in the past, the cancelation was going to be a new show. The comedies have been performing very well so that narrows their choices to The Forgotten and Eastwick. The Forgotten beats Leno (the new standard for a 10 p.m. show) so Eastwick was the victim. Never watched the show because after its 1st week of ratings, I could tell that this was going to happen. ABC just has too many shows that perform well that there was no chance of Eastwick surviving beyond midseason.

    • Michael

I’ll add that if fans speak their minds, maybe Lifetime will pick it up.

      • Marie

I think Eastwick would go very well with Drop Dead Diva, which I love!

      • Elizabeth

Ohhh, Eastwick would go VERY nicely on Lifetime (paired with Drop Dead Diva/Army Wives) Love this idea!

      • Ivy

Lifetime wouldn’t pick up Men In Trees which did way better numbers even on a Friday night and with a nine month hiatus than Eastwick has ever done.

    • Marie

If anything, ABC should cancel FlashForward. If there was ever a lousy show, that’s it.

      • nunya

FF will get cancelled…just you watch.

      • Lizzy

It will, it didn’t live up to the hype.

      • Tarc

FF isn’t lousy, but it does seem rather plodding and poorly planned. The oretty muc spilled their guts in the pilot, and the rest has been slow and dull in comparison.

      • TS

I agree! What a overrated and boring show with no characer chemistry! I was so excited for the premier and watched 4 episodes before finally admitting that it sucked. Get rid of it! And how about Hank! Worst show ever.

  • pepper hutchinson

This makes me very sad. I really enjoyed this show and will miss it very much.

  • carissa

    Please save this show!

  • karin O’Brien

This is why I hate network tv.

  • Stephanie

I liked this show, but let’s be realistic. I’m not going to watch the last few episodes of a show that was canceled that did not get a chance to wrap up. I can find better things to do with those 5 hours.

  • Kim

This show always put a smile on my face every Wed night. After I got kids to sleep I liked to watch it for pure escapism. Thank goodness I still have Glee and modern Family, though.

  • Shaun

Maybe the storylines could be wrapped up in another medium? Or on another network..?

  • Danielle

ABC always does this to me! How can they cancel this show and leave the unbearable Hank & that stupid Patricia Heaton show on? If it weren’t for Modern Family I would never watch this network again.

    • Michael

Because The Middle performs well in its time slot and they don’t have a comedy in development to replace Hank. And they need a time slot for Lost when it came back!!!

    • Elizabeth

I second this – The Middle is terrible. But Modern Family is one of my new favorites this season!

  • Alexis

I love Eastwick! I hope another network can pick it up.
