Exclusive: 'Law & Order' takes on Letterman scandal!

Categories: Law & Order, News

Law-Order-Letterman_lTop 5 reasons I’m pretty sure Law & Order is ripping the Letterman affair from the headlines for an upcoming episode:

5. How could they resist?

4. Fresh intel reveals that the show is casting the role of a talk-show host who’s popular, married and has kids.

3. Said talk-show host is in her 40s.

2. Wait, 40s?! And her?! Okay, well, I never claimed it was a perfectly parallel episode.

1. The lady Letterman in the murder mystery was cheating on her spouse with a younger female co-worker. (What is this, 90210?) Oh, and it wasn’t the first time!

Things go from tawdry to deadly when an Internet scandal sheet catches wind of the bedhopping, an extortion plot is hatched, and somebody winds up in a body bag. (Thankfully, at least Dave managed to avoid that last part.)

So what do you think, peeps? Too soon? Too tacky? Is Letterman too beloved, even now, to be subjected to this? Or is he getting what he has coming to him — albeit with a lesbian twist and a coupla decades shaved off his age? You know the drill: Sound off below.

    i need House spoilers!!!!

  • ryan

Come on, you knew it was gonna happen. Its Law and Order.

    • Rider

True enough. Here are the people/groups who get most excited in the face of a major crime/national crisis:

      1. CNN
      2. Nancy Grace
      3. L&O writers

  • Rjmoons

Seems like lazy writing to me. They cant come up with any new ideas so they take them from reality.

    • amanners

Um, it’s Law & Order. All of their plots are “ripped from the headlines.”

      • Joel

Yeah, seriously. Law and Order is actually a pretty good social commentary for a procedural. That “Jon and Kate” ep was pretty good and was EXCELLENT at showing just how pointless shows like that are. Now if only they’d do something about the Jay Leno show.

      • JDMB

Hmm, Jay Leno… How can we work that in? TV exec makes bonehead decision, his station(s) tank in the ratings even worse than they were before, and is murdered by a cabal of producers from shows titled “Westland”, “Life as a Cop”, etc. And the jury verdict? JUSTIFIABLE HOMICIDE!!!!! ;-D

  • Bia

HAHAHAH I think it’s awesome. Off course they are ripping from Letterman, and I thinks it’s great. even more with the lesbian twist.

  • allan

That would take less effort to write than the so called reality shows.
Next, one of the kids on Modern Family will fly any in a balloon.

  • maiv

not surprising. i think they just changed it to a woman in order to not directly copy it, but it doesn’t really matter

  • Matt

L&O needs to get some fresh dope.

    • TriciaA

again…hello…for 20 years Law & Order eps have been “ripped from the headlines.” it’s worked!

  • dryedmangoez

    Ripped from the headlines!

    • pretty shopaholic

      …more like “ripped-off”….

  • Gillian

If it’s anything like the show’s take on the Spitzer scandal, I look forward to it.

    • sutherngurl

Best Law & Order episode I’ve seen to date… Jack McKoy was in top form that episode!

  • Vetinari

“Ripped from the headlines” type plots always seem so creatively lazy to me.

  • Stella

Hmmm,Is letterman the first host that slept with women on his show? YAWN!It would be a story if he slept with Paul or Alan.

  • Alisa

You know what? I’m sick and tired of hearing what a great guy Letterman is and how much dignity and class he’s displaying. He didn’t do either and obviously thinks he can slide through this one like the slimy snake that he is. Sorry, snake. Good luck, L&O, who cares if it’s “creatively lazy” or he’s not the “first host that slept with women on his show,” it’s a story like any other TV story and this time it is ripped from the headlines. Yes, it happens all the time and the fact is that we think that these men are swine (sorry, swine) for doing it. Why is Letterman exempt?

  • ClearlyDemented

I’m still waiting for the Billy Mays episode.

  • dom

Hey I love Letterman, and have been very impressed by the dignity he has displayed in dealing with something that really isn’t any of our business anyway. But it’s a news story, so it’s fair game.

    • carol

Dignity?are you kidding? the old man told his side before anyone else could so he could get people on his side. it is not about the extortion it is about sleeping with young girls while having a relationship for 23 years and not stopping even after he got married! dirtbag!

      • wakeforce

The young girl in question was over 21 AND she got promoted over other women. Maybe SHE took advantage of Letterman!

      • TriciaA

        Please! SHE took advantage…get real!

  • Dave

    Beloved?

  • BJohnson

There have probably been only 1 or 2 episodes I refused to watch. One was the Mel Gibsonish storyline cause his situation was, and still is, embarrassing enough. Same for Letterman. I mean duh of course L&O would snap it up but I’m not biting. It’s hard to remember the last ep I’ve sat down and watched.

  • haha

gee what a surprise… L&O using real headlines to make an episode. How do you folks watch this garbage week after week.

  • kendall

I have loved Letterman for decades and been a staunch supporter and dedicated fan. But while i won’t cast stones at his stupidity for having an affair – that’s between him and his wife – the fact is that he abused his position as the boss. As my husband rightly points out, if he did that, he’d be fired on the spot. Letterman is getting away with sexual harassment of huge proportions and it’s just wrong. I can’t watch him any more. Which sucks. The whole thing just sucks.

    • Stella

Sexual Harassment of huge proportions? Why are you making things up?

    • carol

I agree. dont know how his ratings can still be high. People have double standards. I cant watch him anymore either and am disgusted at his pretence on air. He is not a nice guy he is a pervert who took advantage of young girls.

      • Enriqueta Valera

D’uh the “women” not the “girls” in question were way over 21. They used each other. Please go watch Leno he’s ever so much more “Nice” (that d-bag is ready to pounce on Conan’s job…).

  • prof chaos

Um..L&O (one of my fav shows btw) has been doing ripped from the headline shows for, oh 20 years. So it obviously works.

  • danoregon

I was kind of hoping for a takeoff on the ESPN sports analyst and the production assistant – but Letterman will do.

  • JEFF FROM JERSEY; YES NEW JERSEY

You know L&O always take some heat from critics when they do shows based on recent events. Will this plot line fly? Da dum.

  • Stella

    Hey you KENDALL
Sexual harassment of huge prortions??? Are you drinking again?

    • piper

You must be the one drinking, Stella, you’re starting to repeat yourself.

      • Stella

        Are you kendall lesbian lover?

  • carol

I cannot believe Americans continue to think what letterman did is ok and continue to watch his show.that old man is a sleaz ball and should retire in disgrace. We get Leno here in Australia and it is not funny or entertaning at all. was it like this in the old show. you guys have wierd tastes. Lenos band leader sits slouched on the chair and does not look interested whereas Paul Shaffer looks interested

    • Ditto

Paul Shaffer is a complete joke. He is so pathetic that every time they announce he’s Canadian, the entire country shutters.

  • Christian

The lesbian affair angle seems stolen from a recent Mentalist. BTW, it’s become SOP for L&O to take one “ripped from the headlines” plot and merge it with another; for example, the baby pact + mom harassing via Internet ep.

  • pam

I think it’s great–can’t wait to watch this episode. Law & Order has still got it for me!

  • David Harvey

Letterman ceased being funny years ago. I am very sorry for his family and I hope he’s truly remorseful as he announced on his program. As far as L&O spoofing the story – that’s always been one of their major draws – twisting real events into an episode. And any controversy/uproar generated from what the episode covers usually helps draw ratings.

  • Julie

I think that the worse thing is that how can you listen to any of Dave’s monologue without thinking about the whole glass house thing

  • Kristen

I think it was nice of Letterman to add some fresh headlines to a case that has been done on one or more L& O before. Sometimes, it takes a “new” story to refresh an old storyline.

  • Jeri

I love when they riff on real events. Letterman is my fav host but even he knows married celebs that get busted with young (and/or younger) chicks are gonna be in the media. He does it too!

  • Marv

My favorite L&O ep was on Sesame Street when the lette “M” was missing. VERY funny.

    • Marv

Sorry, looks like the letter “r” is missing here.
