'24' scoop: President Logan returns!

Categories: 24, News

Gregory-Itzin_lIt’s official: 24’s upcoming eighth season is going to be craaaazy (the bat-you-know-what kind).

Gregory Itzin is returning to 24 as lunatic ex-prez Charles Logan for a multi-episode arc. Logan will resurface towards the end of Day 8 when Cherry Jones’ President Taylor reluctantly enlists her disgraced predecessor to assist with an escalating diplomatic crisis.

24 exec producer Howard Gordon says the opportunity to watch Jones and Itzin go head-to-head “was simply too compelling to pass up.”

Logan was last seen in season 6 after being stabbed to near-death by his equally mental former wife Martha. At the time, 24’s then-executive producer Jon Cassar revealed that the initial script called for Logan to die. “I did everything I could not to kill him,” he said. “I wanted to give us the [option] to potentially bring him back.”

24 returns with its customary two-night, four-hour premiere on Jan. 17 and 18.

Thoughts on Logan’s comeback?

    YES.

  • Carolyn

Fantastic. Couldn’t stand Logan but bringing him back will produce some great possibilities for the writing crew.

  • alisa

i LOVE to hate that man. I’m possibly too excited for his return. I’m glad they didn’t actually kill him. Maybe i’m just missing Nina, but i think 24 needs an arch enemy again.

  • Danika

He is a great actor. He did a wonderful job of playing a character that we loved to hate!I will be glad to see him back to his passive aggressive best on 24. It’s also good seeing him in his recurring role on The Mentalist.

  • Margo

Awesome. I hope this means Martha will be back as well.

    • Ab

Martha Died. That was revealed last season.

      • Chris

I don’t remember that being said – how did she die?

      • t3hdow

Martha’s death was implied (but not official). The first daughter mentioned it to Aaron after the White House hold up.
Speaking on her, Logan and even Wayne Palmer, I’m not a big fan of unconfirmed deaths in the 24 world, since it’s never been shy about killing major characters before (especially in season 5). I guess after season 5, the writers knew what a mistake it was to eliminate so many good characters for the sake of drama (even though it did enhance the season). It’s beginning to get ridiculous, though.

      • Mack Greene

ABC killed her when they foolishly canceled Samantha Who?

      • Chris

I remember the first daughter telling Aaron that she was sorry about Martha, but they never said why or that she was dead.

  • Ivan

in the season 8 premiere 4-5 PM

I absolutely hated Charles Logan with a passion. I am so excited for him to come back!

  • Glenn

This is what 24 does worst….needlessly bring back great characters for tepid story arcs instead of letting them go away when they’re on top. They did it with Nina, they did it with Palmer’s wife, and now they’re doing it with Logan. Although I will give 24 props for handling Tony’s return last year pretty damn well. I thought that would crash and burn.

    Fifteenth!

The best thing about having a DVR was being able to fast forward through the tedious scenes with President Logan and the First Lady. Logan’s first season was the start of the 24 downfall. Of course, in typical Hollywood fashion, when the show started to suck, it finally won an Emmy.

    • Brian C.

The award shows and millions of viewers think you’re a moron.

    • Alex

I’ve got to disagree completely…. the storyline with Logan and his wife was one of the most compelling on TV. It’s a huge part of (but not entirely) why season 5 was the best season.

    • Joe

Are you trying to be a comedian and just bad at it? Season 5 was by far the best season of this series (followed by the worst – season 6), and it was in no small part due to the Logans. This is the best news I’ve heard about 24 in a long time!

    • t3hdow

I disagree. Only the Logans rivaled the Palmers (excluding the season 6 family members) for the greatest presidential family drama in 24. Taylor’s okay, but she never excited me like those two. Without the excellent mid-season twist that Logan’s presence brought, I doubt season 5 would’ve been so great (even though it succeeded in other areas as well).

      • Nick

Of course, I disagree with all those who disagree with me.

Just my opinion, but the Emmy’s often miss the boat on good shows (The Wire, Gilmore Girls), and I think they were late to the party on 24.

The first season of 24 was ground breaking. It was a testosterone-driven guy show with practically non-stop action. By Season 5, Jack went from loyal operative to an obsequious caricature of his former self. Instead of maturing with the character, Sutherland’s acting has gotten worse. He’s doing it by rote now.

Worse yet, the percentage of action scenes dropped dramatically after the first few seasons, and it became much more of an evening soap opera by season 5.

        @Brian C. – You’re a class act, dude!

      • t3hdow

Actually, I do agree that season 1 was the best season of 24, but not because of the non-stop action. Season 1 was far more suspenseful than action driven (but the few action bits were great). Jack was constantly at the mercy of bureaucrats instead of shooting his way out of everything, the CTU staff was extremely meticulous and called people out for every little inconsistency, and the storytelling really tied together well, despite a few time incongruities (i.e., Tony suddenly appearing in the safe house to save Teri in an impossibly short time span). edges.
Season 5 was really good too, but ironically enough, it went against most of what made season 1 shine. To be fair, there’s no way the style of season 1 could have been replicated in the later years.

Day 5 won the every award possible. Logan is a great actor.
