'Smallville' scoop: Martian Manhunter returns!

Categories: News, Smallville

Phil-Morris_lSmallville’s upcoming Justice Society-themed two-parter has added another headliner. Exec producer Kelly Souders confirms that the highly anticipated eppys (titled “Society” and slated to air in early 2010) will mark the return of Phil Morris as Martian Manhunter.

Penned by comic book hero Geoff Johns, “Society” marks the arrival of Justice Society members Hawkman, Doctor Fate, and Stargirl. The abundance of special guest stars is what prompted Souders and fellow showrunner Brian Peterson to expand the episode into two parts.

“To be honest, there were so many characters and so much great story that people would’ve been robbed of some great moments if we kept it to just one hour,” says Sounders. “So now that it’s a two-parter, you won’t miss anything.”

Check out this week’s Ask Ausiello for more details on “Society.” In the meantime, riddle me this: Are you more pumped for “Society” now that MM is on board? Sound off below!

I don’t think it’s possible for me to be any more psyched about this episode than I’ve already been! But it’s great to hear that J’onn will be back! Hope he has his powers back!

  • Paul

It’s great that Phil Morris is returning and Geoff Johns is writing more Smallville. Hawkman & Dr. Fate are cool. Stargirl? Eh. WIth any luck, we’ll see some of our old Teen Titan, I mean, Justice folks, too, huh?

  • JRose48

I don’t care what anyone says I love Smallville. And I get a special thrill every time they include another comic hero so this is going to be freaking awesome!

    • Jason

Could not have said it better myself.

    • Alex

I’m afraid I lost my thrill when they kept messing with the characters too much. So far the only comic character to look or behave anything like the comics was Zatanna. Black Canary was ridiculous and Green Arrow wasn’t much better. You’ll forgive me if I have low expectations for the JSA guys.

  • DanB2666

Not more pumped (Unless he actually takes on the look of Martian Manhunter)

  • Sarah

wooooooohooooooo on the return of martian manhunter!!!!!! super excited!!!!

  • svfan

Did by any chance she mention if he was in 1 or 2 episode? MM definantly adds to the feel of it.

    • SamiaQ

In the article, and in spoilers, it mentions that MM will be appearing in part one (episode ‘Society’).

I hope MM makes more appearances. He is exceptionally great. And he can help CK out as well – after all, MM is really and truly the one remaining link to Krypton (excluding the FOS).

  • Jesse

    YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • brynna

Love Smallville, the awesomeness just gets better and better. All I need now is another Justice League Episode and this season will be amazing.

  • Kalie

Fantastic!! I was already excited about the Justice Society episode, especially when I heard it was being expanded to a two-parter. I was wondering when they’d bring Phil Morris back. Love him as Martian Manhunter!! IMO, he’s one of the best recurring characters they’ve ever had on the show.

  • Vanessa

    Best scoop ever!

  • Fb

    I love Phil Morris.

  • Sarah

    Awesome news!
Now they just have to announce that Zatanna is returning!

  • dj4our

they better not mess up Hawkman!

  • ggny

Hawkman yes! Him and Ollie better have some good moments together

  • Dominique

Hell yeah this is awesome! Now if they could only announce the Flash is returning…

  • Iliana

So excited for “Society” and “Legends” They are going to be amazing!

  • Marlowe32

I want to know when is Green Lantern gonna show up ? Isn’t it kind of odd that Ryan Reynolds will be Green Lantern for DC and Deadpool for Marvel ? Saw a great fan-made GL trailer with Nathan Fillion as Hal Jordan on You Tube….

    • Chappel

Green Lantern was one of my favorite comic book heroes when I was a kid and I’d love to see him on Smallville, but I suspect the cost of the special effects his character would need are cost prohibitive. I’m really looking forward to seeing him on the big screen, though. And Thor. And for Thor and the Hulk to tangle. It’s like being a kid again and waiting for next month’s issue of my favorite mags.

  • gone2

I’m more excited to find out if LOIS will be a part of Society!!!

    • Natasha

Lois is going to be in “Legends”, and Tom is directing “Legends” also.

  • Mary

I am indeed more pumped for “Society” now that Martian Manhunter is on board — but I still wish they’d gone with Hawkgirl rather than Hawkman.

  • Mary

@gone2 Lois is not a part of “Society”; we’ve known this for weeks. She’s a part of “Legends”, though (the second part of “Society”).

  • Marlowe32

My girl and I have noticed that Lois is a super-hero ho’…from Arthur Curry (Aquaman) to Ollie to Kal-El…she loves them super-dudes…

    • Margo

They’ve ruined the classic character of Lois by making her a super-hero ho’

  • Fiona

I got even more psyched by the news that Lois would be in part 2! Oh and that Michael Shanks is Hawkman. But yeah, it’s been nothing but good news on the Society front.

  • vantheman77

It looks like it’s going to be Clark, Martian Manhunter, and Green Arrow for the JLA Vs. The JSA of Star Girl, Hawkman, and Dr. Fate. It’s going to be one heck of a superhero smackdown.

  • Dan Tabellion

I was actually hoping they’d have the Spectre in it. It still sounds like it will be a very good episode.

  • David

    BADASS. So excited.

    Thanks for the scoop.

  • Autumn

I would be more excited if we got some Chloe scoop since there isn’t anything. I like MM though and these two episodes will probably be the best of the season since season 9 is awful thus far. IMO of course. Any chance for that interview with the producers any time soon?

    • Aaron

      AWESOME NEWS!!
      Thanks Michael :D

    • Kalie

Season 9 has been awful? What show have you been watching, or are even watching at all??

      • DB

The show has never recovered from the stupidity of “Doomsday” (or Failsday as it has been called). Matrix Clark, love-sick Lois, depressed Chloe and Ollie…talk about tv kryptonite! I’ll tune in for the two-parter, but it still won’t fix the major writing problems this show has been dealing with for years now.

      • Nicci

I loved earlier Smallville, but after last season I’ve completely given up watching the show. ‘Doomsday’ was the worst finale ever.

  • Fansworth

That’s nice but I want some more Supergirl and LEGION!

  • mrthjaimes

S9 is The Best Smallville Season ever, PSW are making a amazing job with this serie… I cant wait until Jan.. It is so far away ;(

  • J.

I’m psyched about MM, but when will they let Clark fly, or become Superman? I can only be teased for so long! He’s practically Superman now, just let it happen!

    • mgb

I agree completely. They can’t keep dragging the non-flying out. He needs to fly NOW or he won’t be able to fight the bad guys coming his way. Smallville has a lot more stories to tell, but Clark needs all of his abilities to do the legend of Superman proud.

    • DB

Are you serious? They’ve only been saying for YEARS now that he’ll fly and wear the costume MAYBE in the series finale. Are you honestly telling me that after nine seasons you haven’t figured out that they’re just stringing you along…!?!

    • John Smith

Clark flies this week for the first time. It’s one of the best kept secrets of the season.

  • Joel

I wish they had done a two-parter for the Justice League episode. Then they could have expanded the story more. It was fantastic how it was but a two-parter would have been awesome. Still, at least we’re getting this. And I’ve been wondering when J’onn J’onzz would return. I mean, he’s a detective now for Metropolis PD.
