Scoop: 'Vampire Diaries,' 'Melrose Place' picked up!

melrose-vampire-diaries_lThis just in: Sources confirm that The CW has picked up The Vampire Diaries for a full season and Melrose Place for, well, a sorta-full season.

The back-nine order for Diaries was a no-brainer. The Kevin Williamson-produced thriller scored The CW’s best premiere ratings ever and has been a consistent demo dynamo on Thursday night.

Melrose, meanwhile, has been a ratings misfit, which explains The CW’s decision to pick up only five additional episodes instead of the typical nine. Of course, that number could go up if Heather Locklear is able to work her ratings magic next month.

Thoughts?

Great! I like both, so I’m glad they give them a chance

  • Ben

I’m not surprised about Melrose since they want to give it time to find it’s footing with Heather Locklear.

    • michelekamay

I’m not sure the return of Heather Locklear would change anything. They need to improve storylines, the writing and get rid of some actors who don’t want to loose themselves in the show! It’s Melrose Place, babe!

As far as Mr Williamson keeps full control on The Vampire Diaries, the show will be fine and my thursday nights too.

  • Sarah

    Yay!!

  • J

    I’m happy!

  • Dave

mikey, i love you, but please fix the grammar in the first sentence ;o)

  • Dave

BTW, yay for Melrose. I have no idea why I’m so addicted to it … but I can’t help it!

  • alemap

how about if they got rid of Ashlee on Melrose? The girl needs an acting coach. Pronto.

    • jcdc13

She has neither the looks or the acting skills the role requires.

    • Modwild

I’m so with you on this. She was better when she was in the movie Undiscovered. Her nose was still big and apparently her ego less inflated, which allowed her to “act” rather than pose and pout in acting’s place. Yikes.

    • Jed

Yes!! Do this!! Killing her off would be huge ratings! People would be interested. Sorry Ash, I can deal with you music but your acting is BAD.

      • meg

omg i know!! this is one of my favorite new shows, but I cannot stand ashlee simpson. she drives me NUTS.

    • Dave

Ashlee is getting better week after week! I am a fan of her, but she’s really good as a psycho! People should watch Melrose, it’s pretty good. Ratings? Do they consider people watching the show on others channels? People who record it and watch it the day after?

    • Kaley

Yes, please kill off Ashlee! Melrose Place is great except for her.

  • Michelle

Two days of good news in a row? Yippee! First Castle and now Vampire Diaries! Thanks CW!

  • davidsask

Hopefully Ashlee is character that dies!

  • snicka

My thoughts are that Ashley Simpson wentz is the worst actress ever. Yay for Vampire Diaries, the show is amazingly fun.

  • Jen

LOL at Melrose getting renewed! What do the haters have to say now?

    • Nathalie

First of all it wasn’t renewed it was given 5 more episodes, being renewed is when they give a show another season…the raitIngs suck so they should be lucky that they even considered given them 5 episodes. If Heather Locklear doesn’t give MP a boost in raiting you can kiss the show goodbye

    • joe

the show is still bad there hoping that heathers on the show will help it

  • ESperanza

VP is great and MP could be ok but it needs some serious retooling. Katie Cassidy is obviously the break out star of the show and she has yet to have a real story line that didn’t involve the annoying engaged couple.

    • Jess

I absolutely love Katie Cassidy. She’s the only reason I watch the show at all. Loved her on Supernatural, love her on MP. She’s incredibly talented.

  • Tony

    Jen,

The haters would say that Melrose is a bad show on a bad network with really bad ratings. They would also say that the only reason they picked up 5 additional episodes was to save face and because they only have one midseason replacement show so they have nothing to put in that timeslot from Mar-May.

That’s what they would say…and THEY would be correct.

BTW. It really took them 6 weeks to give a back 9 order to Vampire Diaries? It is by far and away CW’s biggest success in the last 5 years. It really was a no brainer. If the CW doesn’t go belly up, VD will be around for a while.

  • erin

love the vampire diaries, so happy to hear this news!! :)

    • ShutUpRob

      Yay for Dawson’s Teeth!
      .

  • kate

Cannot beleive they actually picked up melrose even is heather is coming back i cant see her wanting to stay there for long!

  • Lindsey

They should have never canceled Privileged for Melrose.

    • Mari

I completely agree- Privileged was a great show!

    • Arty

Me too. I was seriously bummed out. It was witty and clever and Megan Smith was lovable but still had her flaws. And that’s what made the show a great show.

  • Kimmy

im happy about mp i used to watch the original not as good but getting there…BOOO on VP that show has to go

    • Nicholas

I’m sorry I am pretty sure you have that backwards. MP = LAME nothing like the original. VD was addictive from the first second.

  • Alyssa

they are crazy to renew MP, every time i try to watch it i fall asleep! that’s too bad, the original was so much better!

  • alex

Vampire Diaries is so good! I started watching it expecting it to be so cheesy and campy, but it’s been surprisingly well written and acted. Yayy!

    • Natalie

“Vampire Diaries is so good! I started watching it expecting it to be so cheesy and campy, but it’s been surprisingly well written and acted”

I couldn’t agree more. I expected a hokey ripoff of Twilight(not that it isn’t cheesy and stupid itself) but it is really believable and well written. I really really REALLY love this show.

  • Jess

Yay! For vampire diaries!!! Don’t think melrose deserves it though! Hope ABC is as kind to Eastwick.

    • sally1018

I concur about Eastwick. Love that show!!

  • Joe

Love Vampire Diaries, but I’m really not understanding the Melrose pickup. Can’t the CW wait for Locklear to join the show before committing to a full season? I mean, the show is hemorrhaging (sp?) almost 40% of 90210’s audience. Total head scratcher.

  • Sarah T

What if they pick up another season of Veronica Mars? Sorry! Can’t love the VM love go! We miss you V!

  • Sparky

Finally its been a no brainer from weeks ago that TVD should have been picked up – so happy for the show. MP is nt bad but I agree Ashlee Wentz can’t act.

  • Shane

I love both shows! I love Diaries more and was so surprised it was as good as it is. The CW needs to advertise the hell out of Locklear. Anyone remember the “Mondays ar a bitch” advertising campaign back when MP was on in the 90’s? Classic!!

  • DC

Now the writers have their pickup for MP, so maybe they can actually string along an entire story arc. Get it moving, shake the place up, and I hope something better happens. I can’t tell you why I watch but I suppose hope they kick things into high gear like the original MP did. Ella is without a doubt the star and I can’t wait to see her showdown with Amanda. Everything points to Ella becoming a protege for Amanda, and that may not be a bad thing. Please do something with the David/Lauren story line and make us care about Riley/Jonah/Auggie/Violet or toss them. The original MP did much better after they added some folks and subtracted some folks. (Bye Jo – there was a lot of hope for your visit to MP2, but complaining like you did, one ep was enough! Guess you will have to go back to guesting on OTH)

  • Snarf

No surprise about the Vampire Ab-watch, I mean diaries. My only complaint? We have yet to have a good look to see what Elena’s younger brother Jeremy (Steven J McQueen) is packing. Boo.

  • Elle

These two shows are what makes the CW so amazing GUILTY PLEASURES lol. These are both good shows but hope that Life UneXpected comes soon a CW show with substance would be nice.

  • karen

Yay for VD, and wow for MP, that show is almost as bad as 90210. The tuesday shows are just lame. No point ot the story, and the only character interesting enough on both shows is Ella.
I am starting to love VD, Damon, Stefan and Elena can kick Twilight’s butt.

    • C

hey, that’s a no, no girl. twilight was also good in so many ways. of course another vampire story is always a great thumbs up though. vampires are my thing now… completely hooked.

      • karen

Twilight the book series is a rip off of many books, is not just The Vampire diaries but, “Daughters of darkness” and the whole Night world series. Meyer also got stuff from the Sookie Stackhouse series.
And when it comes down to the movie, it was awful. The special effects were horrible, and they didn’t even do a good job with the editing. the acting was awful and Steward and Pattinson are over rated

  • melbye

My thought is that Dawn Ostroff needs to lose her job

  • Carrie

The Vampire Diaries’ full season is well deserved, it is not only getting great ratings but improving a great deal in quality.
