'Parenthood' exclusive: Helen Hunt out! Lauren Graham in!

graham-hunt_lUPDATE Friday, Oct. 9: It’s official! A source inside Graham’s camp confirms that her deal to join Parenthood has just closed! Woo-hoo!

This just in: Helen Hunt is apparently no longer in the running to replace Maura Tierney in Parenthood. According to an insider, talks between the actress and NBC fell apart and the role of single mom Sarah has now been offered to (wait for it) Lauren Graham! I’m told the Gilmore Girls MVP recently met with Parenthood boss Jason Katims (dream team alert!) to discuss the plum part.

Can you imagine?! I can and it’s awesome!

ooooooh! Too good to be true!

      My reactions are:
      .
      1) Not until Gg has a *real* series finale.
      .
      2) Well, at least a certain magical-pants-wearing costar can’t singlehandedly get the show cancelled this time.
      .
      3) Okay, I’m there.
      .
      4) But there’d *better* be a real series finale to Gilmore Girls sometime within the next year. Grr. Argh!
      .

      • OMG

GG series finale was one of the best ever. It was perfect.

      • ShutUpRob

Not while Lorelai and Luke remain unmarried. They DIDN’T get their graduation.

        — Rob

      • Sherika

i’m happy the way GG ended, i got closer, i’m they didn’t make it all cheesey

      • Sherika

        i meant closure (wow)

    • Emma

I love you Lauren Graham. You taught me it’s okay to speed too fast for people to understand what you’re saying.

  • Holly

OMG! Lauren Graham might be perfect for the part.

  • MelMel

Sweet! I’ve missed seeing Lauren in something besides Gilmore Girls reruns.

    • AD

Gilmore Girl reruns??? Where do you see those?? I’d love to see reruns

      • lee

ABC Family @ 5:00 PM (pacific)

      • superso

and at 11:00 AM, too, in case you missed the previous day’s 5:00 PM show, although i would be lying if i didn’t sometimes watch both the 11 and the 5 shows every day, haha.

      • Chelsea

haha yay! somebody else watches the 5 and 11 o’clock ones! i definitely do that sometimes…

      • sil

i own all 7 season and i still try to get home in time to catch the re-runs (9 am or 3 pm here)

  • Kristen

Holy crap! I can’t believe it! OMG! OMG!

  • tamara

    great news!!!
I miss her. let’s hope it works out.

  • Jayme

Never even heard of this, but Lauren Graham might make me have a look.

  • Rosa

She’s a better choice than Helen Hunt but I still wish Maura was in it.

    Get well soon Maura.

    • Tina

Couldn’t agree with you more! I really wish she were up to snuff and able to return, but as she can’t at the moment, Graham would be a great replacement — definitely preferable to Helen Hunt, as I really just don’t find her appealing at all.

I hope Maura’s return to health is speedy and complete.

  • Luddite

I’m all of a sudden finding it REALLY hard to be sad that Maura Tierney is out. (I’m still sad. I am. It’s just really, really hard to find the sad amid all the sudden and unexpected happy.)

    • sarita

agreed. many good wishes to tierny as she fights her battle with breast cancer, but i’ve missed graham. i just wish the reason tierny had to be replaced was a different one.

  • Davey

YEAH! The LAUREN finally returns to my t.v. screeen.

  • wendyk

    Lorelai returns!!!! Yay!!!!

  • Ryan

    I love this!

  • Don J

Lauren Graham would be perfect! Much better choice than Helen Hunt. A little younger and hotter too!

  • CONVERTGIRL

I’D ACTUALLY WATCH THE SHOW IF THEY GET HER

  • Melissa

Still super sad about Maura, and hopefully she will be back on my tv soon. BUT, getting LG would be effing fantastic!

  • Joanna

I don’t think she’ll do as good a job as Maura Tierney would have done, but she’s miles better than Helen Hunt!

  • Annie

My interest in Parenthood before = 0
My interest in Parenthood + Lauren Graham = When the hell is this show coming on already!!

    • Nicole

That is exactly what I was going to say! If this goes through, Parenthood will go from “not on my radar” to appointment television.

      • Lola

Adding my comment to yours in agreement as I am equally like-minded. I had zero interest and now it’s gone from zero to 60 in the time it took to read that headline. And what would make this perfect (OK, besides Scott Patterson aka Luke?) A long overdue Emmy for Ms. Graham. (Nothing personal but I never thought Helen Hunt could act.)

    • jane

      haha. Yes! I completely agree!

    • craig

      are you kidding!
      Maura Tireney = Great Actress!
Lauren Grahm = Ham and Cheese on Rye!

  • Heather

I can totally imagine this!! I absolutely love Lauren Graham and I really hope she gets this part! I’ve really missed Gilmore Girls and Lauren. I’m very excited about the possibility that she’ll be on the show! yuss.

    • Coyote

Lauren was very funny as the efficiency expert on NewsRadio which starred Maura Tierney.

  • chris

can we stop with the “wait for it” setup? It’s old and misused. Especially when your answer is the next word.

    • ej

      you’re a dork

      • Mel

Actually ej, you’re a moron. I agree with you Chris, enough with the “wait for it” crap.

      • ej

yeah u guys should hang out together and discuss how cool u are because i doubt anyone else would sit and listen to you losers

    • ej

actually “Mel” who is actually Chris reposting with a new name…u are…wait for it….a bigger tool than i thought…why read articles to

      • Cara

        actually actually

    • LJ

Yeah – ‘wait for it’ has been over for a while and it was completely misused here (especially by placing it inside the parentheses).

  • jay

maura is great and it sucked that she couldnt do the show….but this better go through for lauren bec she is freakin amazing!!!! i have missed her on tv sooooooooooo much!

  • Laura

That would be amazing!! But doesn’t Lauren Graham have another show this season?

    • Leslie

I believe she had a pilot, but it did not get picked up.

  • Joe Jackson

Give Helen Hunt whatever she wants, it is the only way to save this show. Helen Hunt is a name people will tune in to see most people have never heard of Lauren Graham.

    • jpgilmore

She was in a great tv show for 7 seasons and has done some great movies and you think most people have never heard of Lauren? actually i would say Lauren has done more lately than Helen Hunt , she’s been missing a long time

      • Walt

How do you know what “most people have or have not heard of?” Have you ever heard of “WAKE UP”?

    • XSE Drake

The only way to save the show?

Coming out of pilot season this had more positive word-of-mouth than any other show, yet a marginally-liked and oft-maligned former TV star who hasn’t been on anyone’s radar in 10 years is the only way to save it?

      Crack is whack.

    • Josie

Helen Hunt is someone I would go out of my way to avoid. Lauren Graham is a better choice.

    • kate

theres already plently of big tv names on the cast, plus lauren graham is a big tv name as well, shes deifatly a better replacement for maura, although i still wish maura was in it i love lauren as well!

    • Sherika

well the all they have to say is lorelai, and everyone will tune, including me

  • Dana

I would watch if she were cast :)

  • Briana

My interest level went from who cares to ya ya! NBC, my faith in you might be restored.

  • Jane

Okay, this is much better. I might actually watch this show now.

  • jpgilmore

Lauren Graham in Parenthood is the best thing it could ever happen to the show she’s a really good actress.

  • Jasper

I, too, wish Maura a very speedy recovery. However…I find that as an actress, her characters are always so dour and moody. I think that Lauren Graham would just be a brighter, happier presence on this show. I hope she does get this role.

    • Tina

I think Abigail Lockhart was (rightfully) dour and moody. Lisa Miller was not. And for each movie in which she might have played someone moody/depressed/sad, there’s been one where she hasn’t been.

However, I agree that Lauren Graham is a little more overtly cheerful and enthusiastic than Maura Tierney. (Not that Tierney’s a bummer or anything, just not quite as animated, which is not a criticism — just a difference.)

I kind of wonder if that’s a good thing for this role, though. This ’single mom’ role is a lot different than chipper Lorelai Gilmore, and I hope she can strike and maintain the right tone.

She’s a much more inspired choice than Helen Hunt, though! Lord.

      • Maddy

If you have any hesitation about believing that Lauren Graham could play this role, check out The Answer Man. She plays a single mom in the movie who’s not at all like Lorelai Gilmore. She’s more serious and sadder in that role, yet still retains that brightness and warmth that makes her so appealing to watch.

  • jackie

    Hell yes!!!

  • Blue

I thought she was supposed to be in a new series about a woman who gave marriage advise but had trouble with her own relationships. Guess that fell through. Loved Gilmore Girls so hope this happens. Still miss Maura and hope she gets well soon!

  • Ally

Lorli Gilmore and Nate Fisher together?? Yes please. Think of the sarcasm! I was planning on giving it a chance now, but it stands a better chance of staying on my list will Lauren.

  • superso

holy crap! this is the BEST news i’ve heard all day! i was planning on watching ‘parenthood’ anyway cuz i adore maura tierney – who i hope is doing better by the day – but i just loooooooooovvvvvve lauren graham! keep us posted, ausiello, thanks!
