Armchair Casting Director: 'True Blood' welcomes a Debbie Downer

true-blood-casting_lYou’re gonna have a field day with this one, people — I know I did. True Blood is looking for a twenty- to thirtysomething knockout to play season 3 werewolf Alcide’s psycho ex-girlfriend, Debbie Pelt. So who comes to mind when you hear that she’s described as sporty and spiteful, with black hair that wouldn’t be out of place on an Afghan at a dog show? Who comes to my mind is…

Milla Jovovich: Though she’s the heroine in the Resident Evil flicks, haven’t her angular features and kickass bod always made you think “bitch on wheels”? Just me? Really? Well, she’s still been known to try out the odd shag from time to time.

Katharine Isabelle: How perfect an option is this Supernatural alum? She’s gorgeous, snarky, and in the first of the Ginger Snaps movies, she didn’t just play a werewolf’s honey, she played the werewolf herself. Top that, Shakira!

Shakira: Come to think of it, the hip-swiveling ”She-Wolf” might not be a bad choice for the role. Certainly, her animal instincts are the stuff of legend. Then again, how would Alan Ball feel about a Debbie who talks like Charo?

Sarah Brown: Though the Daytime Emmy winner just signed on to join The Bold and the Beautiful when her run on General Hospital is over, the CBS sudser is known to be cool about loaning out its cast — last season, they freed up Ashley Jones to play Daphne.

Krysten Ritter: Once Veronica Mars‘ classmate, this romcom perennial (27 Dresses, Confessions of a Shopaholic) often wears an expression that makes me think she’s one broken nail away from a meltdown. Please, please, please, can’t we break that nail and see what happens?

Katie Holmes: Okay, she finally got us to stop thinking of her as Joey Potter. Now she needs to get us to stop thinking of her as Mrs. Tom Cruise. Baring her metaphorical claws opposite a leading man with literal fangs might just do the trick.

Your turn. Who do you imagine playing Sookie’s new foil? Sound off below. And remember — you never know who’s reading. (Additional reporting/contributions by Andy Patrick)

I like your idea of Krysten Ritter, she’s amazing! What about Kristin Kreuk Smallville alum? I’d love to see her take on a different role like this.

    • Cindy

Ohh, I like that idea. Kreuk would be fantastic!

      • Snarf

Kristen Kruek would be great given the right material (sorry Smallville)

    • sandya

I think Krysten Ritter would be okay, too, but not Kristin Kreuk. I can’t see her playing the agressive, intimidating *itch Debbie. I just feel the character should be played by a taller woman, too.

My actual choice from the above list would be Milla Jovovich. She’s the exact type I think of for Debbie Pelt.

    • Ralph

Please not Kristen Kreuk! I can’t believe they brought her back on Smallville.

      • shane

Not a fan of Kristen Kreuk. Saw her in the Street Fighter filmand she was horrible.
I like the idea of Krysten Ritter though.

  • Andrea

    How about me!!!????

  • Samantha

    Katie Holmes? Yuck!

    • crispy

The idea of Katie Holme’s appearing in a show that mocks religious cults… yeh, Tom’s gonna let that happen!

      • jenn

Yeah, he lost me at “Katie Holmes.” Seriously, that might be the one thing that could ruin True Blood for me.

    • deb z

i agree no katie holmes yuk yuk yuk i also agree alyssa milano should be in the running before katie holmes yeah yeah yeah

  • Heidi

Has Alcide been cast yet? It helps to know the look of the one who will play him…

I do think this would be a fun little part for Katie Holmes, certainly surprising.
Alyssa Milano could do the trick as well…

    • Danielle

I totally agree with the Alyssa Milano suggestion! That would be kick ass (literally).

    • junglered

I was just thinking that Alcide is cast and its a Big secret! He has to interact with Sookie (AP) and the horrible Debbie Pelt. AB may have cast Alcide and is looking for the right actor to play Debbie!

  • Jenny W

Where’s the option of Shannyn Sossamon? Come on! I think she’d be awesome.

    • Anthony

Good call on Shannyn Sossamon! I’ve always liked her, but where the hell is she?

    • J.B.

Shannon Sossamon would be AWESOME – excellent suggestion – Debbi should be dark haired, tiny, and evil :)

  • Sawyer

    Kristin Kreuk

  • Ashley

I think Katie Holmes would be great!

  • Mira

Love the idea of Krysten Ritter. She was fab on “Breaking Bad” last season! Although, she does look a little young for 30. :-\

    • smartypants

Krysten was the only legit contender on this list. (Katie Holmes? Milla Jovovich? Shakira? I’ve never seen an Ausiello list so off base.)

Besides KR, Fairuza Balk would be amazing as Debbie Pelt!

  • Jayme

I think your going to have to dye the hair of either Sarah Michelle Gellar or Kristen Bell. I’m more than happy for either of them to pull through.

Katie Holmes I think is a horrible choice. I mean, Joey Potter was a nice doormat, but we need some strong actress to really make a presence.

    • Kim

Haven’t you seen Pieces of April? Holmes has some acting chops (okay, so they’re kind of secret acting chops, but she can do it).

  • Melissa

I like Sarah Brown! I don’t like someone too well known for this role. And after her most recent stint on GH as Claudia Z, we know she can play jealous witch(or something that rhymes with it).

    • rachel

I completely agree that Sarah Brown would be great. We know she can play the bitch/psycho character well. She also has the ability to play vulnerable as well, which I think the role needs for people to believe Alcide would date her.

Knowing who is playing Alcide will help to picture a female in the role.

    • Amanda

Sarah definitely knows how to play a strong, badass/kickass woman! Plus, she looks amazing in black and leather. I love her!

    • Amy

Sarah Brown would be great, she already shown in a prior role that she can play manipulative, evil, yet be somewhat likeable (enough to keep Alcide). She’s also a 3 time Emmy winner, so she’s got the acting credentials.

    • Angie

Sarah Brown (what a drab name for such a fantastic actress, btw) has, over the last 10+ years, proven that she can play manipulative, bad-ass, vicious, but ultimately sympathetic characters. Alan Ball is so excited about this character, I just hope they cast somebody amazing in this role, because I think it’s gonna be a blast to watch.

  • Serena

Katie Holmes? Seriously? From Dawson’s Creek to True Blood?
I’d say Ritter, I loved her in Veronica Mars.

  • amanda Pickel

i think you should get milla kunis!!!! think- it would be perfect. i bet she can do scrappy & psycho….just like in max payne!

    • Lay

Yes, Milla Kunis would rock it!!!

      • deb z

milla kunis yeah would be good anybody but katie holmes true blood would be ruined also for me she has that fake smile that really looks fake

      • junglered

Yeah with her unique eye color (one blue and one green) she would be a good looking were-animal

    • Sil J

Mila is a good suggestion, but she seems too young, or just not harsh/bitchy enough.

      • Kim

Mila played a pretty good Bitch in Max Payne I thought

  • Jenn

How about Eliza Dushku? Just a thought.

    • Samantha

aka the worst actress on TV.

      • Em

        i whole heartedly agree.

      • Tarc

I suppose that’s one opinion… one I don’t share in any sense. Dushku’s not in line for an Oscar, but half the actresses on TV today are worse – and MUCH worse.

  • LW

What about Eliza Dushku???? She kicked ass as Faith on Buffy/Angel so we know she can bring the crazy!

    • Gracee

hmm but its not like she doesn’t have a full time gig going…

I say Kristen Bell but just because I want to see more Kristen Bell on tv. and go Krysten Ritter cos Veronica Mars alum are made of win!

    • Plygal

I like her, she was awesome as Faith on Buffy/Angel, she can kick butt!!

  • M

How about Christina Ricci? Or Rose McGowan?

    • Kate

Both of those are great choices.

      • Cindy Finke

I agree with you – Rose McGowan would be awesome – and let’s try to give Christina Ricci a role that she can really sink her teeth into – she has been given her dues in the frothy roles.

    • JS

Christina would also bring a comical element.

  • Jefferson

    PARKER POSEY!

    • EveatEden

oooh now there’s a good one!

      • Shiny

Parker has not yet been un-banished for Jezebel James. She’s schedule to do penance until next pilot season, at one point she’ll be alowed to guest star only until she is fully rehabilitated for the crime of destroying an ASP show.

  • nina

    Sarah Brown would be PERFECT!!

    • Cindy

Agreed! Sarah Brown would be amazing, and she deserves the shot. I’d rather it go to her than some bigger but less talented ‘name’ actress.

      • nina

Exactly. She is a great actres and already knows how to make a role like that pretty great. I’d go with the person who’s more talented than just a big name.

      • Kim

I agree!! Sarah Brown is such a great actress and she would hit it out of the park. And really she’s got playing the “bitch” down to an art form!!

  • Sawyer

Shannyn Sossamon would be good too!

  • Candace

I think Katie Holmes would be an excellent choice. She’s talented and gorgeous. Besides, those that hate her for no reason can now hate her as Debbie Pelt.

  • leslie

Katie Sackhoff – she can always dye her hair.

  • Chappel

I think Katharine Isabelle would be perfect for the part.

    • I Killed Jenny Schecter

I totally agree with you! She was great in Ginger Snaps. Why isn’t she a star yet?

  • Ralph Hartman

I think Fairuza Balk would make a great Debbie Pelt infact there is a twitter account for Debbie Pelt an they used Fairuzas picture as her

    • LT

omg… Fairuza Balk would kick ass as Debbie. She has the voice and amazing eyes to pull it off. Definitely a winner.

      • Kasey

I’m with you all the way! She has the crazy to pull it off. I saw her too when I read the book.

      • Brooke

Fairuza Balk is an AMAZING idea, I think.

      • Lacy

I thought of Fairuza Balk for Crystal. Book readers know who I am talking about.

      • Beliitseri

GREAT CHOICE! and benefits for Fairuza as well…Somebody make a call to ALAN!

      • smartypants

FB would knock it out of the park.

      • Sil J

        Oh yesssss!

    • Angelique

That’s who I thought of when I read the book.

    • JRose48

Oh wow! I was going to say Kristen Ritter, but she’s too young. Then you mention Fairuza Balk. She’s perfect!

    • EveatEden

ooh that’s a good one too!

    • Belle

Good one! She plays crazy very well!

    • anne

I was just thinking that she would be perfect and then I saw your post.

    • maiv

That would be awesome! She’s totally nuts in American History X!

    • VeggieTart

Fairuza would be good. She was just a nutjob in “The Craft” and she just has that evil b*tch look. I also thought Maggie Gyllenhaal or Rose McGowan might be good.

    • Leanne

Fairuza Balk is TOO OLD for a believable Debbie Pelt.

    • squirlgirl

      Absolutely Fairuza! She’s perfect!

  • Heidi

Okay so after reading comments I’d keep Alyssa Milano as an option but definitely add Shannyn Sossamon, Christina Ricci or Mila Kunis to the list. They’d all be exceptional!

That said I think sometimes actors who need to shake up their careers can benefit from playing against type – that’s why Katie Holmes isn’t eliminated from my list. It WOULD be a shock to go from Joey Potter to a dark, violent ex of a werewolf! Not sure if she’s got the chops but I’m betting she’d love to find out.

  • Heidi

Oh you know who else would be great? Mia Kirshner!

    • Shelby205

Mia Kirshner is an excellent choice! Also like Shannyn and Fairuza, although I think the latter may be too old

      • JennL

Fairuza or Mia would be a good choice! :)

  • Debbie

I think Summer Glau would be a great choice!

    • crispy

She’s cursed! Keep her away from my beloved True Blood.

      • Jim

For the record, she is not cursed… she just had the unfortunate luck of being cast on two shows aired on fox. and we all can easily rattle off good shows cancelled on that network. if you ask any TSCC fan, she didn’t have enough airtime.

  • bob

Shannyn Sossamon would be a pretty good choice! Never thought of her, but she would totally fit. Out of all of Ausiello’s picks, I would say Milla Jovovich would be the best. Maybe even someone like Rebecca Hall could be good. NOOOO to the Holmes idea though–she blows.

  • Andie

Katie Holmes can’t act; AB please don’t use her! I think Milla Jovovich would be awesome and could totally pull off the crazy/diabolical bitch thing as Debbie Pelt.

  • Nicole Cassandra

Eliza Dushku is in Dollhouse, plus I like her, ditto Kristin Bell and SMG and Debbie Pelt is not even a character I love to hate, I just hate that bitch. So I’m thinking Katie Holmes would be kinda cool cause I’d love to see what happens to Debbie in book 4 happen to her on screen.

  • yen d

i think angelina jolie would be great for the part, that is if she can see the potential….

    • Em

Angelina Jolie would have been perfect 10 years ago, but as great as she looks, she can’t pass for an early-to-mid 20’s gal.

  • Stacie

    Milla Jovovich? Too elegant.
Krysten Ritter would fit perfect as Debbie Pelt!
