Scoop: 'Vampire,' '90210,' 'Melrose,' get bigger!

cw-ratings-90210_lNow here’s some spin I can get behind: The live-plus-seven-day DVR numbers from the opening week of the TV season are in, and 90210, Melrose Place, and Vampire Diaries all saw significant gains compared to live-only viewing, with 90210 getting the biggest boost. The highlights:

* 90210 grew a considerable 73 percent in women 18-34 (1.92 vs. 3.32) and 46 percent in total viewers (1.9 million vs. 2.9 million).

* Melrose Place, which has been struggling in the ratings, gained 54 percent in women 18-34 (2.12 vs. 3.26) and 43 percent in total viewers (2 million vs. 2.8 million).

* Freshman hit Vampire Diaries soared 64 percent in women 18-34 (2.33 vs. 3.83) and 40 percent in total viewers (4.0 million vs. 5.7 million).

* Supernatural grew 35 percent in women 18-34 (1.5 vs. 2.0) and 38 percent (2.9 million vs. 4 million) in total viewers.

Data for Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill, and Smallville should start trickling in next week.

For niche shows (well, for most shows unless your NCIS which is kicking MAJOR butt in ratings) the future is off-network viewing and DVRs.

Not at all surprised by the jumps for the shows on the CW.

    • Jess

same here. i kinda expected the dvr and downloading audience would make a difference

    • kiran

      ha ha well said!

    • Tarc

I’ve ben repeating this same thing for more than a year now: who watches TV real time (aside from, perhaps, the CBS core audience -the oldsters). I think I’ve watched four shows real time in nearly two years (far less than 0.1% of viewing).

      • Aghast

You have watched more than 4000 shows in the last two years?! Unless you’re a critic, that’s just sad.

  • Leanna

Supernatural is the only awesome show on that poor excuse for a network but I’m glad to see them doing ok merely because it means we may get a season 6 and man I just LOVE that show. Sam Winchester for the win!

    • Kathy

I agree, and the competition on that night is murder.

    • Karen

Supernatural is great, but so is Gossip Girl, melrose and 90210! I only watch the CW – the old fogie networks are crap

    • Jake

Actually, i think supernaturals fifth season is its last, and Gosip Girl, 90210 (especially), and Vampire diaries are amazing shows

  • Lesley

I wonder how The Beautiful Life did in these ratings. Good enough to keep it on the air longer than 2 episodes?

    • Krista

i was wondering the same thing.. surely if the other shows are doing slightly better it would be too.. i doubt the network would bring it back though..i think its dead for good and it wasn’t even that bad of a tv show and i think it had potential for the network

      • april-ann

TBL may not have been that bad a show but, it did not take a genius to know that it was never going to fly. Right about now, I’d be firing the a&& whose decision it was to cancel Privileged.

    • Jenni

Heard on the radio today that its getting cancelled and they are gonna play Melrose Place reruns instead.

  • Matej

90210 really improved a lot this season, it-s getting a lot of positive comments online.

    • anna

yeah! 90210 is really great! I’m loving it! annoying Annie should go though, at least she’s not whining as much!

      • michelekamay

90210 is taking the lead now,I’m falling in love with the cast, they are getting along pretty so well right now!
TVD is just awesome, Smallville and SuperNatural deliver as always!
Gossip Girl better watch out, it’s almost the fifth wheel now…let us wait the stuff Duff will bring on next week.

  • Heather

Supernatural should get more viewers. the CW puts it on at a really bad time so that really hurts that show.

    • Kim

Supernatural is on a great time compared to Smallville be thankful that supernatural probably won’t get cancelled while smallville won’t do as well because it’s stuck on Friday!

  • karly

The CW should have left TBL on…melrose Place sucks..i like 90210..but i prob will get tired of the show like i did GG when everyone sleeps with each other and there noone gets better

  • Hank

I was hoping Vampire Diaries would fail miserably. The portrayal of teens on this show as sex starved, drunken drug users is so sad. I guess having a good plot around vampires is just not enough to capture viewers attention.

    • DW

You make the teens on TVD sound much more interesting than they are. That show is a giant goodie goodie snooze-fest.

      • Jessica

TVD is boring enough for those who DIDN’T read the books when they came out 10+ years ago… for those of us who did read them this show is coma-inducing. The only difference so far is the sub-plot w/ Elena’s brother (in the books he’s in elementary school) and that sub-plot is STUPID.

    • lily

Do you actually know any teenagers? Were you ever a teenager? Or were you born a middle-aged man who has no sex drive and spent his high school years playing Scrabble with his grandma…

    • KFed

“sex starved, drunken drug users” Ahh, those were the days. Anybody else wish they were still in high school?

  • Jake

    I secretly love “Melrose Place.”

    • daniel

      me too.

      • ej

        me 3

      • Blair

        Me TOO!!

    • Psst

      it’s not a secret anymore

  • Realme2008

I thought only nielsen ratings counted, so do these numbers even mean much?

  • IMatt

They don’t count in terms of getting more money from advertisers since most ppl that DVR, skip the commercials.

    • Eric

I read that watching DVR actually helps you remember commercials. When fastforwarding on DVR, you have to pay attention. Meanwhile, when watching live people use the bathroom or get a snack or talk through commercials.

      • ila

This is not correct. Most live viewers stay in the room during commercials. They either actively watch the ads or at least hear them. Meanwhile, most DVR viewers race past the ads at a speed NASA would envy, and afterwards can name only a fraction of the products or services they saw. Those are the reasons why live viewers ars much preferred by networks.

  • CandyMaize

    Supernatural :-)

  • Mib815

Where are the top 20 Dvr numbers? I want to kno about FlashForward!!!!

  • Brenda BuBois

wow so basically 90210 and Melrose have the same number of viewers! Melrose season 3 here we come!

  • Brenda BuBois

    *season 2 i mean LOL

  • Roger

Wait. These numbers look weird. Didn’t Vampire Diaries open with 4.8 or 4.9 million, not 4? And Supernatural with 3.4, not 2.9? Did the finals go down THAT much?

In any case, I’m glad to see Supernatural got high DVR numbers, at least.

    • alice

The 4.9 and 3.4 million are live plus Same Day DVR. The 4 and 2.9 million shown here are Live only. The increases reflect live plus DVR up to 7 days. The ratings are reported like that. It is very confusing! Still, its a great increase.
