It might be time to speed up those Heather Locklear negotiations. The ratings for last night’s Melrose Place premiere are in and, well, they’re not great. The mega-hyped reboot averaged a disappointing 2.3 million viewers. The show fared slightly better among its core young adult audience, placing second in the 9 pm hour. Also of positive note: Melrose was the No. 1 trending topic on Twitter last night for about an hour! (Hey, you take the wins where you can get ‘em).
The second season premiere of 90210 actually fared better with 2.6 million viewers, its highest viewer tally since last winter.
Did you watch either? Thoughts? (Melrose actually gets a lot better next week. Ditto 90210.)

Watching my TiVo’d ep of MP as we speak. It is so bad. I think this is a one-time view for me.
Entertainment2u on Twitter
WOW those are some bad ratings. i’m kind of happy about it. 90210 got such awful ratings last year and yet still got renewed. if the cw wants shows that have alot of hype without actual ratings than that is what they are going to get
It’s the CW, what can you say?
i can say smallville. CW does not inherently mean bad television. there have been a number of good shows on the cw/wb/upn. it’s pretty clear, however, that the WB is the stronger half of the CW. veronica mars was great, but of course got cancelled.
I don’t know. Buffy was UPN. When it was on WB it was awful, but I will concede that that’s when Joss tagged out.
That’s not the point of my comment. Even if shows are good, the whole network of the CW doesn’t bring good ratings. Shows like Supernatural would get double the viewers on another network.
LOL. I love when awful shows bomb.
Hmm, I actually enjoyed the Melrose Place pilot. It was fast-paced and had some intrigue and mystery. I never watched the original, so I’m not trying to compare it to anything. I’ll tune in next week.
I watched both shows, and found them pretty good! 90210 started off way better than last year… felt more of an old 90210ish feeling in the air… MP on the other hand was far better than the original shows’ pilot, getting down to business from the beginning, and enjoyed it a lot! Hope it gets better! Still, those 2.6 and 2.3 mil respectivelly, dont sound that bad for the cw, right? They’re bad for premieres, and for fresh programs on an otherwise night full of repeats, but still…
wow. 2.3 million only? i wonder why the cw always push through this kind of shows. i mean seriously?!?! supernatural and smallville are the shows they should be promoting
kudos to the president of the cw! lol
She is the same that axed great shows like Veronica Mars or Everwood, nothing new actually
I actually liked it, too, and I wasn’t really expecting to. I just watched it because I had nothing else to do, and I got a little hooked.
Loved the original series (watching on DVD now!) but perhaps I’m too old at 38 to enjoy a CW series. I wasn’t feeling it, though the first season of the original wasn’t great either. Ashley Simpson can’t act, and I want to know how Michael could possibly have a 20-something year old son???
MP was just ok for me, dawg. I’ll watch it again, if only for Michael Mancini. Love me some Michael Mancini.
And they’re going to brush it off and continue with thier remakes and teen dramas. This isn’t the ’90’s anymore.
I love it. That’s what Dawn gets for insisting that the CW become the lily-white teenage girl channel.
I thought the “quickie” explanations to tied up plot holes from the old show were lame. Sydney faked her death. David is Michael’s son, but was “hidden” for 13 years. Seriously?
Micheal fathered David while he was in med school but abandoned him for 13 years…whats so wild about that? Micheal is in his late 40s
I stopped watching 90210 and don’t plan on watching Melrose Place.
Was 90210 good? I only watched for Navid and Adrianna last season, all the other characters are way too annoying and the show isn’t good imo.
I guess the obvs reason why MP had low season premiere ratings is because it was up against AGT!!!
Yeah, well the CW will be up against TOUGHER competition in a few weeks when CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox all premiere their regular fall schedules…so…look out below!
CW has said over and over that Nielson doesn’t capture their true ratings because of DVR and Online viewings. Pretty much everyone I know watched the show last night and ate it up with a spoon.
This in no longer correct though…sorry
i enjoyed the season premiere of 90210 much more than melrose place actually
funny how ausiello isn’t singing the praises of melrose place too loudly any more. not the monster hit you thought it would be eh
i knew it was gonna do bad seriously u need to stop hyping these kind of shows they always do bad
thats what they get for all that sleazy advertising.
i watching both 90210 and MP and didnt think they were all that bad for CW shows. MP kept me engaged and it set a good pace, which i think is a major problem for 90210: the pace.
anyway, the moment you put the word “bit**” on a bilboard, people are gonna resent you for it. all the advertising almost turned me off and im a huge fan of juicy, gossip-girl-y shows, but i cant respect those gimmicks.
watched*
Dawn Ostroff is an epic failure.
And again, this is the spawn of the network that cancelled “Angel” when it had increased its viewership 8% in its final season as all of the other network mainstays at the time were dropping.
Much as I love Heather Locklear, I’m not really sure she’s going to bring in the kind of audience the CW even wants. They need someone familiar to younger people today. They’d almost be better off brining back Alyssa Milano as Michael’s sister to stir things up.
I was actually pleasantly surprised with both. 90210 did not wait a second to jump into the drama and I can not wait to watch next week! Melrose Place was a little dissapointing, I felt like I was missing something the entire show, but I am hooked… at least for next week.
It’s sad when the like of Jon-Kate beat this! It’s on the CW so it will never score big!
was ready to write off 90210 but premiere was actually better than entire first season….melrose was decent premiere..has potential
They can’t even call this Melrose Place what did they do to this show. It’s the worst show I ever seen, nothing like the old show
that’s too bad because i sort of liked it and i am a guy and i am not even in the target audience for this network but i like One Tree Hill-Gossip Girl-Smallville and 90210 and the 90210 is nothing like the one i loved but things change. I never saw the original
I liked it. Too bad about the ratings.
I actually liked it. Aside from the fact that Ashlee Simpson kind of annoyed me and had nothing to do, I overall liked the episode. It was entertaining and the writing was decent. I’m surprised it didn’t do better.
Bring back Privileged!
Here here. WAY better than this dreck.
I agree bring back privileged
I agree. Privileged was awesome!!
Melrose Place was surprisingly good! I didn’t see 90210. I’ll definitely check out Melrose next week.
