Super-famous Japanese actor Hiroyuki Sanada — best known stateside for his roles in The Last Samurai and Rush Hour 3 — is joining the sixth and final season of Lost, sources confirm to me exclusively.
Who’s Sanada playing? Beats the hell out of me. I squeezed every last one of my moles for deets and the only thing I came up with is that it’s a “significant recurring” role. Sounds like a case for Doc Jensen…
“My prediction,” says D.J., “is that he will play a mystical mystery man who serves as John Locke’s Obi-Wan-meets-Mr. Miyagi in the post-Jughead rebooted Lost timeline. Attuned to The Island’s magic — perhaps an embodiment of The Island itself — Hiroyuki’s character will help the amnesiac Locke rediscover his destiny to become The Island knight/protector and guide him back, even as dark forces conspire to stop Locke and the rest of the castaways from going back.”
Yeah, I suspected as much.
This is the second major piece of season 6 Lost casting to break this week. On Wednesday, it was announced that Deadwood’s John Hawkes had been tapped to play Lennon, the “scruffy, edgy, charismatic spokesperson/translator for the president of a foreign corporation.”
Got a theory about Sanada’s role? Do you agree with Jensen? Sound off below!

YaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaH!!!!
Maybe Hanso, but whoever he is I’m getting a bit leery of all the cast additions. They will have a hard enough time wrapping up the existing storylines without getting into fleshing out new characters. If they are just small parts, then great, but if they are backstory-flashback episode type roles – yikes.
Hanso isn’t asian, we’ve already seen him in the Lost Experience. I doubt they would change his race when and if they add him to the show.
seriously – I’ll take the wisdom of the producers over some random’s leeriness.
Ah I didn’t know the part had already been cast. Like most viewers, I don’t watch all the nerdapalooza extras, it’s just a tv show to me. As to the guy below – well he’s no less a “random” than I am.
Ok, isn’t it obvious. Shimosawa is going to be the “president of a foreign corporation” that needs a translator. What his significance beyond that is anyones guess. But when you have 2 significant castings announced within a few days of each other – one part being for a translator and the other being cast with an actor from another country, can’t you put 2 and 2 together. Granted in the LOST world, 2 and 2 could easily be 5.
Good call, Paul. I’m gonna take a wild guess and, despite his being Japanese, he will be speaking Korean. Convenient plot twists ensue with Sun/Jin.
May be he will be Sun’s daddy when she was still just a twinkle in his eye.
the show needs more female characters
Yes, not enough female characters.
Put 2 and 2 together. “Lennon” is “spokesperson/translator for the president of a foreign corporation.” Perhaps Shimosawa is the aforementioned president of a foreign corporation?
sorry paul..your post wasn’t there when I was posting!
Clearly Paul and I share a brain.
I’m with Vetinari–if it’s significant, I’m guessing Hanso. Though I think the creators came out and basically said there are no flashforwards/flashbacks predominant in the 6th season. Maybe flash-sides?
I think he is Hanso, the Darwin Initiative creator and possibly a link to all the island’s mysteries.
It’s DHARMA, and no to Hanso, Hanso is white. Anyone who played the Lost Experience knows that.
Hanso is Danish.
yeah…i think i was thinking of HANZO from Kill Bill when I said the name sounded very japanese lol Totally agree though, this guy is not playing Alvar Hanso.
I have to 100% agree with Vetinari. Why would they start adding new characters when they’ve got, what, 16 or 17 episodes to tie everything up.
How about Sun’s father? As a young man perhaps??
I think he is young mr paik
I agree fernando, it could easily be a young mr. paik. we have always known he was somehow connected to the island and the dharma initiave but never have been given any backstory. if this is the case, it is about god damn time.
Thank you, Lost is going to be amazing this season.
More “Deadwood” alums? Not too bad, in my book. Speaking of which, anyone think we’ll see Oldham again? That seemed pretty random to me if they don’t act upon it…
Mr. Paik on the island in 1977, working with Dharma. He would need a translator to communicate with them about their needs for the equipment that he is selling them.
^^^Exactly my thoughts.
I think he’s the tattoo artist who gave Kate the tattoo of the Japanese characters for “Bad boys make me hot”.
My god, Season 6 is turning into another sausage fest!
I swear the ratio of confirmed series regular/recurring characters of male to females is about 18:4!
Interesting casting. I wish we knew more.
Sanada is awesome! As a kid, I watched his early action movies and they were great!
I just hope he can provide more backstory for Nikki and Paolo.
Hoohoo! Just so!
I don’t care who he plays, he’s hot!
Maybe he is a person who ranks above Jacob and Mib? In an interview with tv guide Titus weliver said he believed there was a higher authority. And maybe it means the Lennon character is sort of the spokesperson for this man?
I know the timeline will be all changed up, but maybe this is the Economist?
Ooooooooo good one!!!! I have ben VERY curious about the economist, it seemed so important who he when they introduced the plot line.
who he is*
I’m dying to know what Jensen is smoking when he comes up with this stuff.
All he knows is 2 words- “significant recurring” and he comes up with that? haha amazing
Maybe he will be killed quickly and not be a major character, just like Caesar in season 5. I am more excited by the announcement of John Hawkes. I think he is the perfect actor for LOST.
I don’t think adding new characters will hurt them wrapping things up. Look, they added Faraday and Charlotte were introduced at the beginning of season 4 and were done by mid season 5, not much more than a full season, and they both had a major impact and moved the story forward.
I hope his new Role starts the 6th/final season of Lost in 2010 goes well.
I’m thinkin he might be Jin and Sun’s future son…? I know they have a daughter but perhaps there is another child yet to be born.
I’m out of it because I thought that Locke was dead and that the man in black was embodying him…
There is no “post-Jughead rebooted Lost timeline” There are no multiple timelines! There’s only one timeline! It can be messed with, but time has a way of course correcting. If there were multiple timelines there would be no need for course correcting. THERE IS ONLY ONE TIMELINE. WHATEVER HAPPENS HAPPENS. DEAD IS DEAD and all that.
The bomb never went off. All major players will appear at start of season six in same time period we currently have Sun, Ben, UnLocke, Ilana & Richard. Time travel silliness is over.
I hate that they’re bringing new characters into the storyline now. I want face time for all the characters we already have. Hawks & Sanada better be wearing red shirts is what I have to say on that.
