Kate Winslet better make room in her crowded trophy case for an Emmy.
Killer Films is developing a five-hour TV miniseries adaptation of James M. Cain’s Depression-era novel Mildred Pierce with the Oscar winner attached to headline. The project, which is being shopped to cable (including HBO), centers on a single mom struggling for independence during the Great Depression.
Mildred comes with some built-in awards cache: The 1945 film version netted Joan Crawford her first Academy Award.

I think you have little to write so you make up too much.
Who knows how she’ll perform. She could be phoning it in.
I like Kate W, but the movie with Joan was just so great. She WAS Mildred and it was just perfect as it was.
just need to know – will there be hats?? original was a great hat/big shoulders flix — and who will play Eve Arden’s part?
Perez Hilton?
Certain movies just shouldn’t be remade. There’s something sacrilegeous about it.
Leave Mildred alone. The song has been sung!
If anyone can pull off another Mildred it would be Kate. I am like someone else here, hope they keep the 40’s look.
I agree entirely. If any actress can pull off Mildred Pierce it’s going to be Kate Winslet. Joan Crawford was amazing as Mildred and was awarded in kind. I’m on pins and needles waiting for this project to get going and be completed so I can see it!
Kate is amazing–was not a fan at first. I think she “is” the best actress working today.
“IF IT AIN’T BROKE…DON’T FIX IT !!!!
Did you forget that modern cinema is based on a tradition of storytelling that has us still performing (and filming) the same plays that westerners were doing 2,000+ years ago, right?
Noooooo! what are they thinking? but hey, remember there was a “casablanca” tv show starring david soul.
There was so much in the movie to acclaim and yet so much from that same movie that was only hinted at or neglected in relation to the novel. If adapted well, this could be one of the best TV series ever and Ms. Winslet seems perfect for the role.
I used to love Kate but when she puts on an American accent she loses her appeal to me, a lot of her personality disappears. So I can’t say I’m looking forward to this.
Really? I think one of Kate’s roles with the MOST personality was in Eternal Sunshine, and she adopted an American accent for that!
OMG…Definitely one of the all time best! My friends and i know all the dialogue by heart. Never expected it to be remade though. I wonder who will play Veda? Kate’s gonna have to work on her inner diva if she doesn’t want to disappoint though. Can’t wait.
I adore Kate Winslet as the next guy and on HBO it surely won’t suck, but I’m not really excited about 5 hours of feminist melodram.
Let’s hear some scoop about Game of Thrones(5 new roles cast), Lawman, Boardwalk Empire, Rectify, Spartacus or Walking Dead.
(ppsssst …. cachet …)
Good Lord, what a fuss!
Winslet could do it, but Todd Haynes?
If it was Matthew Weiner of Mad Men,
Joan might approve.
So happy she is doing something! One of the greatest actresses alive. I was a little upset when she said that she was going to take a break for a while.
Kate, to me, can do no wrong. Bring on Mildred Pierce! Heck, she should remake “Stella Dallas”, “Jezebel” and “Anna Christie” too.
Kate can do no wrong in my book. Go for it.
The original film adaptation of “Mildred Pierce” is melodramatic perfection. Crawford was flawless, as were her supporting actors (including her eyebrows) and she more than deserved her Oscar. Kate Winslet can do no wrong, as far as I’m concerned (with the possible exception of “Little Children” but she’s so great we’ll forgive her for that). I think she’d make a great Mildred and I can’t wait to see who else gets cast – they better not flub on the supporting roles because that could ruin the whole thing. The Eve Arden and Ann Blythe roles must be chosen very carefully. Bring on the melodrama!
Anything Kate Winslet does is automatically going to be good because she’s one of the best actresses of our generation, hands down. And doing something off the silver screen is probably a good idea since there was so much buzz about her two amazing performances last year… and she deserves more awards.
What do you mean by first oscar. It was Crawford’s only oscar.
The brilliant parody of Mildred Pierce on the Carol Burnett show was the only remake ever needed. It featured Harvey Korman as Monte and Vicky Lawrence as Veda. (Not to be confused with the earlier “Mildred Fierce” sketch that is on YouTube.)
Doing a straight remake of Mildred Pierce will be as successful as the recent remake of The Women.
Total miscasting. Meryl? Truly. Glenn? Oh, yes. Cate Blanchett? Most definitely. Kate? Not. But Kate, if you do it, how about leaving your clothes ON this time?
This seems like a departure for Killer Films, but Ms. Winslet has excellent taste, and it is a terrific story. I will watch!
Mildred Pierce is a piece of history. The thing that makes that movie so fascinating to me is how a successful entrepreneurial woman like Mildred Pierce was treated as a second class citizen back then! It was just amazing. I don’t know how a modern remake of that movie could ever capture the history of that movie.
What’s fun about that movie is the melodrama of it, so typical of 1940s movies. I just don’t see how it could be remade and be any good.
I’m torn. I loved Joan Crawford’s performance in the original (I’m a HUGE old movie buff), but Kate is one of my favorite modern day actresses, and she’s proven she could tackle anything. I wish her the best of luck with this project, I’m sure she’ll be great. (I just hope they don’t try and “update” it. Leave it as is.)
I’m way more excited about the fact that Todd Haynes (Far From Heaven, I’m Not There, Safe, etc.) is writing and directing.
Well I am not much of a fan of remakes, and when the original is so good, why mess with a good thing.I have seen Mildred Pierce and thought it was great,Joan Crawford was amazing in it. That being said, if there is going to be a remake, I think you could not do any better than Kate Winslet. She is one of the few really good actresses we have now,so I think as far as casting goes,it is a pretty darn good choice.
I would watch Kate read the phone book. She’s awesome in everything.
