You never know who you're going to randomly bump into here at Comic-Con. Take last night. I'm innocently munching on a spicy tuna roll at Warner Bros' Asian-themed cocktail reception and who should wander over to say hello but Smallville exec producer Brian Peterson. Good times, right? It gets better. The dude, who's in town for the show's historic Con panel on Sunday, talked my ear off about his blockbuster plans for season 9 and beyond. What follows after the jump are some of the highlights…
* Season 9's theme is
"Clark's darkest hour."
* Look for a season-long love
triangle with Clark, Lois, and Red-Blue Blur.
* Chloe, still grieving over
Jimmy's death, will immerse herself in all things Watchtowerish. Peterson also
hinted at some tension for Chlark when she realizes she's no longer content
just being his sidekick.
* We'll find out why Clark
isn't flying in a scene with him and Jor-El (the returning Terence Stamp) in
the season premiere.
* Footage of Brian Austin Green
as Metallo will be unveiled at tomorrow's Con panel. As of now, he's on board
for two episodes, but Peterson says they're hopeful he'll do more.
* The episode they're
currently shooting (either 9.02 or 9.03) focuses on Oliver's downward spiral.
* Battlestar Galactica's
Alessandro Juliani will reprise his role as Dr. Emil Hamilton for several
episodes this season.
* Story-wise, Peterson is not approaching this season as Smallville's last.
* I saved the best for last:
Peterson recently had dinner with Michael Rosenbaum. Interpret as you like.

Sounds awesome can’t wait
ggg
People pissed with the doomsday ending need to get over it. He’ll be back, they’ll have their iconic fight to the death sometime. The whole series is just reinterpreting the Superman mythos, and they do a pretty good job making it work. Don’t like the Jimmy deal, or Chloe as Watchtower, or Zod coming from the crystal (c’mon, it’s too easy to see the crystal was created by Zor-El to control Clark, not Jor-El and Zod wasn’t killed, just pushed aside) I know it will all be explained in a good way. The series isn’t perfect but they do a good job. Can’t wait till season 9 – bring back Lex, and bring on Darkseid after Zod.
And at least mention the guy over in Gotham eventually, or a Paradise Island gal, please? I mean, even Zatanna got an episode, and we’ve heard of Star City and Edge City, but nothing about Gotham?
Might be a way to keep the series flying as high as ever, though. Even if they don’t show this season, a mention would be electric for the tenth.
There was one mention of Gotham…That’s the episode where Lex’s friend from Exelsior uses his mind to kill a few of Oliver and Lex’s friends. The second friend that died mentioned he was on his way to Gotham.
There was a mention of Gotham City in one of the Smallville episodes, but not a certain millionaire by day, costumed vigilante by night guy nor an Amazonian Princess. The movie rights are keeping both Batman and Wonder Woman from showing up on Smallville. At least for Batman, it makes sense. When Bruce gets his training, he is supposed to be out of the country, as evidenced in Batman Begins. Him showing up in Smallville or Metropolis wouldn’t make sense. The good thing is that they are using DC Comics superheroes who have never been portrayed by live action actors (Green Arrow, Impulse, Aquaman, Zatanna, the Legion of Superheroes, Cyborg, and coming in January the Golden Age Hawkman and Dr. Fate from the Justice Society). It makes it a little more interesting to see Clark teaming with the lesser known superheroes. I do like Batman and Wonder Woman, but that’s my take as to why they are not on Smallville. I would like to see the Hal Jordan Green Lantern on Smallville, but they are working on a Green Lantern movie with Hal Jordan, so that probably won’t happen. Speaking of Gotham and Metropolis, there were mentions of Metropolis in Batman Forever and a mention of Superman in Batman and Robin. Lois and Clark, which was in production at the time, returned by the favor by mentioning Gotham in an episode that guest starred Frank Gorshin and Adam West from the 1960s Batman show.
Can’t wait for season 9. Thanks for the update!!
DIES in fangirl heaven at the Lois-Clark RBB love triangle bit. It’s so iconic!!!!!! I can barely contain myself!!!!!! Thanks!!!!!!!
This is fraktastic news!! I love Smallville, and Superman in general.
Michael Rosenbaum!!! Be still my beating heart! Please come back, even if only for 2 or 3 episodes a season, please come back!! It isn’t the same without the real Lex Luthor!
I know Michael’s mom. She even gave me a signed autogragh with my name on it. I think the next time I see her I will ask if he is coming back.
Don’t know what’s worse : the promise of a daaaark season (cos dark smallville has been soooooo successful so far), the perspective of a tenth season (cos 9 aren’t enough), the idea of a full fledged love triangle (cos love triangles have been soooo successful on this show before… also, they really should rename the show Lois & Clark 2.0, it’s becoming ridiculous), or the blind hope that a pseudo-suit or a cameo from Rosenbaum are suddenly gonna fix the plethora of writing/casting/budget/ratings problems the show has had for a few years.
I have to agree that the writting isn’t quite as iconic and winsome the majority of the time as in some earlier seasons. I’m also disheartened that the budget cuts are affecting a lot of things (not nearly as bad as Jericho season 2 thankfully) as well, but it seems like they’ve really started to turn things around. Hopefully if we as fans hang on our hopes will be rewarded. Could be worse. They could still have Lana sticking around well after her character should have made a graceful exit (…cough…like when she fled Lex to live abroad after everyone thought she had died) making everyone want to beat their heads against a brick wall, lol.
They should rename the show Metropolis after season 9 is done and you can imagine the direction they can go with a title like that.
YAY for the Lois and Clark/RBB news and double YAY for the Rosenbaum tidbit. Thanks a lot! This season is sounding more exciting by the minute.
I hate the Oliver downward spiral news though. He’s a hero, treat him like one.
And Chloe.. meh. Just be gone already!
9 frackin’ seasons and Clark still can’t fly? And he’s depressed? And he’s 40? Sounds fun!
Oh my godddddddd this show has gone downhill fast. I regret wasting 6 years of my life on the first 6 seasons.
Michael Rosenbaum and Kristen Kreuk were smart to jump ship when it was about to sink. Smallville is moving to Fridays – where shows go to DIE. Is anyone even watching anymore?
I watch it, and i dont mind stopin my friday plains for smallville
I just DVR the show and watch it Saturday. I think this is my favorite season! Seriously amazing season so far.
I still love the show, but Peterson isn’t approaching season 9 as the last. C’mon dude. The show is way past it’s prime. The CW and WB need to officially set an end date before people start losing their minds.
Oh thanks for the scoop.
Still, I’m tired of being so disheartened about how crappy Smallville has become, and it sounds like they have no plans to set things right.
Darker? More pointless angst.
Chloe still not reporting.
Going to try to milk this yet another season. So, absolutely no pay off.
Oh well, there are other much better shows to watch.
To the people who give the negative comments about Smallville, if you don’t think it is very good why are you watching.
Go get entertained somewhere else. Instead of just putting it down. Last season was very creative one of their best. They have grown away from the Kryptonite freaks and have evolved. I look forward to Season 9. but being on Friday and that is a typical ballgame night I will be using my DVR. I definitely will not be missing Smallville.
I thought Season 8 was by far the worst of all. It was such a let down and the whole season was leading up to a fight that lasted 2 minutes at most was horrible. I hope they fix somethings or even this die hard fan will stop watching.
Yeah, the angst thing is really getting old and putting a lag on the characters. This series still owns Louis and Clark with no effort though.
If he would fly and become Superman the show could go on for three more years easily.

Let’s face it, it’s going down and it’s sinking quick. I agree with you Chuck. If they turned it into what it should be (SUPERMAN) then it would last for ages to come. As is, it will slowly fizzle out and people will only watch it to see how badly they botch the Superman cannon.
i doubt that,because it will totally change the scheme of smallville ;which is clark’s life before superman
agre with you
Thank you for always giving us “Smallville” scoop. I still enjoy the show tremendously and I can’t wait for next season.
The triangle for two is no surprise. Curious to see if the reason Clark isn’t flying is what they hinted at in S4.
Peterson better not be approaching S9 as the last because the movie rumor is true.
Thank you for the news, Ausiello!
This show is going down in quality so fast that it’s not even funny. Like we need more darkness, gimmicky HOT wimmins and cameos when they barely have a budget for Clark’s powers. Not like we could expect anything better after Failsday.
