'Scrubs' exclusive: Eliza Coupe upgraded to regular

Categories: News, Scrubs

Eliza-Coupe-Scrubs_l Congratulations are in order to Eliza Coupe: Scrubs has officially promoted the actress to a series regular.

Scrubs boss Bill Lawrence recently hinted that Coupe’s hilariously insensitive intern, Denise (a.k.a. “Jo”), would play an integral part in next season’s med school reboot. “I really like Eliza,” he told me last month. “I think she’s a really interesting actress and we didn’t give her a full character [last season]. I think she’s hyper-talented.”

No argument here.

Coupe joins a refreshed ensemble that will include three or four new regulars in addition to returning vets Donald Faison and John C. McGinley. Zach Braff, Sarah Chalke, Judy Reyes and Ken Jenkins are expected to make guest appearances.

great – she was the best of the newbies :)

  • Patrick

Wonderful, wonder how she will fit in with this med school idea but still awesome.

  • side3

I hope they add Todd Bosley, who played the intern “Howie”. He made me laugh every time he was on camera.

  • TxGowan

This is fine, I guess, but seriously, this show should have ended with the very satisfying “season” finale.

  • Todd

That’s awesome news; she was, by far, my favorite of the newbies last season, and practically the only one I had hoped would be back.

  • Carrie

I liked her and I’m not surprised she’s been promoted. I wonder who else will be a regular? I also liked that handsome black intern. I really hope that Dr. Kelso and Jordan will be making guest appearances as well.

  • BigJoey

This still should be a spin-off, not a continuation, but I will most definitely watch with her as a regular. She is hilarious and smokin’ hot.

  • Stephanie

Excellent. It seems like her character was being groomed from the start to be a regular, and she’s the only one I liked. Well, besides Jimmy the overly touchy orderly.

  • aa

good, i really liked her. also wouldn’t mind the guy she hooked up with coming on board. wasn’t he in jett jackson some show where he was famous and keeping a secret or something.

  • Angie

Her becoming a regular was the only condition I had on watching after ABC ignored the DNR we all signed. She was the thing that made me consistently LMAO last season.

  • AE

Completely deserved. She rocked every scene she was in. Hilarious character!

  • The1337

    Yes, Jo is awesome!!!!!

  • Nicotine

What a “coupe” for Scrubs!!! (Sorry, I couldn’t resist.) I loved her character last season. It really resonated with the rest of the cast. I’m still not so sure about the overall make of the show this season, but I’m anxious to find out.

  • milo

She was hilarious in her one episode of Flight of the Conchords (with one of the best songs, Fa Du Fa Fa). I’m surprised nobody ever mentions that.

  • Jay

Yay!! Best intern of last season. I’m glad they’re bringing her back I thought with the reboot she would get the boot….get it…get it…

  • eyeheartnyc

She grew on me. Too bad Aziz Ansari’s on Park and Rec – I loved his character as well. STEAK NIGHT!!!

  • TC

She prompted the best line of the season from Kelso. “I like her. She’s got girl balls.”

  • bj
  • Marie

She’s the best intern thus far. Her character is both funny and dry; it’s a great combo.

  • topoopon

    Foux du fafa,
    Foux du fafa fafa-ah,
    Foux du fafa, aya!

  • Mister F

Well, she was actually the only intern who got fully developed and appeared in almost every season 8 episode.

Loved her character! Keep on sleeping with fat guys, girl!
It’s a shame that Aziz Ansari was lost to the woeful Parks and Recreation, He’s funny, but that show is not.

  • Jeff

Sonal Shah as Sunny was outstanding and deserves a recurring role–and maybe a little more imagination from the writers.

  • me

the guy she hooked up with was also on smallville as cyborg, but he was much better on scrubs. i loved the character “jo”, she was great, and yeah, sunny was funny too.

  • Aiden

Cool. She was the funniest new interns. This show should shape up well.

  • Chris

The guy she hooked up with was played by Lee Thompson Young who starred in The Famous Jett Jackson on the Disney Channel.

  • Allan

cool it dumb dumbs, the last time scrubs was funny was when braff was promoting garden state or the other movie that was just like garden state but with a different hot girl in the second lead and braff playing the same character for the 14544th time. Bill Lawrence’s wife is sexy. i would totally hit it on the back end.

  • ShutUpRob

They’d better bring back Sunny, too! The show’s “Jo” just wouldn’t be the same without “Natalie.”

She’s not bad, but if they push her more to the front of the show, as more of a lead – they’ll definitely have to re-make her character into someone less “cold” so audiences can “warm” up to her – which in fact will ruin what’s cool about the chatacter, so what’s the point ?
It pains me that Aziz Ansari left the show, because he would have made an amazing lead – and is just wasted on the terribly unfunny PARKS & RECREATION. Unfortunately, the worst person on that show is Amy Pohler, who just seems to be playing her character as a female version of The Office’s Michael ( played by Steve Carrel ). Where Michael is an idiot, but there’s something about him that is very endearing and loveable about him, Pohler’s charcater is just an idiot – and not much fun to watch.
