Scoop: 'Mentalist' summons 'Oz' star Kinney

Categories: News, The Mentalist

Mentalist-casting_lPatrick Jane should have a field day reading this guy: Former Oz actor Terry Kinney is joining The Mentalist as an ex of Lisbon’s (Robin Tunney) and a major player in the Red John investigation, sources confirm to me semi-exclusively.

Kinney, who most recently starred in ABC’s short-lived cop dramedy The Unusuals, will play the recurring role of Sam Bosco, a by-the-book California Bureau of Investigations agent who heads up the division overseeing the Red John case. Bosco served as Lisbon’s mentor as she was coming up through the ranks, during which they shtupped once or twice (or a lot). Further complicating matters: The two share a deep, dark secret!

Bosco is also one of the few people immune to P.J.’s charms. He hates his unorthodox methods and is determined to oust him from the CBI.

Good times all around!

Kinney’s deal calls for him to appear in at least seven episodes.

The Mentalist kicks off its second season (its first in its new Thursday time slot) on Sept. 24.

    Looks like fun.

I L<3VE the MENTALIST. This episode sounds like it's gonna be a winner!

Why are they always messing with shows? If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! And decide what night and time it’s gonna air and LEAVE it there!

  • PJ

They’ll learn moving these shows around is NOT good. Look what happened to The Unit.

  • DeeW

Personally I love that the show is moving to Thurs after CSI!

  • debsagrrl

    What happened to Gregory Itzin??

I really hate when female characters schtup their bosses on the way up the ladder. In the real world, women have to fight twice as hard to get the respect of their peers and being involved with the boss doesn’t happen that often. But male writers love this angle – whatever.

Why on earth would they mess with the format of a show that’s this big a hit? The Mentalist is a hit because it’s FUN, and this storyline doesn’t sound like fun at all. And a “deep dark secret”? Boring. Do we really need ANOTHER show with a backstory?? OH WAIT, the Mentalist ALREADY HAS A BACKSTORY! Now it has two. Maybe they’ll just add another one every season.

While it’s good that he’s joining the cast of The Mentalist, The Unusuals should have NEVER been cancelled. Was a better show than most airing on TV these days. Had drama, humor, and great characters… It’s a real shame that it’s gone.

I LOVE the Mentalist!!! It is one of the rare shows that I don’t mind watching the reruns!

Awesome, it’ll nice to see a new face around, as much as I adore the current cast. And as far as the deep, dark secret? It’ll add a new layer (a good thing) to Lisbon. We haven’t gotten to see much of what makes her tick, what drives her, much less her past or her heart. Hopefully this new guy will bring some of that out. I imagine Jane will find him particularly amusing. He’ll probably be constantly trying to get at him the way he does everyone else. Can’t wait to see it in the fall, finally.

  • Bethany G.

Awesome. Can’t wait to see him. Their deep dark secret + his presence will add a new layer to Lisbon and allow us to see into what makes her tick, her past, her heart… I can totally see Jane doing everything he can to get at this new guy, just as he does with everyone. He’ll probably find it terribly amusing. Can’t wait for September.

This reminds me too much of the two times they have brought in people to hate HOUSE. Oh well hopefully it won’t be as annoying as it was on HOUSE.

I, too, would have liked to have seen The Mentalist stay in it’s Tuesday 2100 ET timeslot–I always felt as this was a good match with the one and only ORIGINAL NCIS, but, like all things, there are no constants in primetime tv anymore. Based on the fact that it does have a very strong following–obviously–I don’t think it will take the hit that some other shows have by being bounced. (fingers crossed!) And I love Terry Kinney–wonderful actor who always lifts anything he appears in. Should be an interesting foe for PJ!

I don’t know why anyone would even compare this to Psych, totally different kind of show.
