Broadway (officially) lends T.R. Knight 'Tenor' role

Categories: Grey's Anatomy, News

TR-Knight_l I can now confirm what I first (strongly) hinted at two weeks ago: T.R. Knight is headed to the Great White Way!

The ex-Grey’s Anatomy thesp, who earlier this month confirmed that he was leaving the ABC drama, has signed on to star in the upcoming Broadway revival of Lend Me a Tenor.

Knight will play the role of Max in the classic farce, which is being directed by Stanley Tucci and is scheduled to open in February 2010. Additional casting will be announced in the coming weeks.

Prior to Tenor, Knight will headline a production of Jason Robert Brown’s Tony-winning Parade at Los Angeles’ Mark Taper Forum.

This one gets a: Whoooooooooooooooo Cares?

  • kal

I care! He’s going to be great!

  • Tyler

T.R. Knight as Leo Frank? I love him to death, but I love Parade even more, and that’s a stretch…

  • bj

that’s no matter what to that.

  • John

Actually, thinking about the character in Parade, I think it’s perfect, and he’ll be a great Leo. I wish I could see it.

  • John

Oh, and @nicotine: You did, enough to comment at least.

  • ctynee

what a cliche for a gay guy to do broadway. No offense meant though. It would have been more exciting if he joined another show

  • Buffy Freak

Wow really insightful ctynee…you mean gay guys like James Galdolfini and Jeff Daniels and Jeremy Piven and Anthony Lapaglia and Kevin Kline and Ralph Fiennes and too many others to name?

  • John

A slightly bigger cliche is bringing up the gay thing in reaction to news about Broadway.

  • Solange

I care too. He’s going to be amazing in both plays. TR can do it all: comedy and drama.
    Grey’s loss but Broadway’s gain.
And pulease. Like the other person said, a lot of heterosexual actors do Broadway.
I’ll add Hugh Jackman and Matthew Broderick to the list.
Can we leave his sexuality out of this already?

  • Simone

TR is great at tugging the heartstrings. Noone has ever made ma cry as much as he did when his dad died. I think he will be fantastic in Parade. Glad he got another role too.
I’m so going to see him.
LA is too far for me, but New York is just clsoe enough.
I hope he keeps getting roles. I miss him already.

  • Josie

I think this is great news. He started on the stage here in Minneapolis and he will probably be more satisfied on stage. In all the interviews I’ve read on him, he never seemed to enjoy television quite as much. I hope he enjoys a long and successful career!

  • no love lost

um, who cares? isn’t this a TV blog?? he’s done

  • Nicotine

Yes, and I’m sure all of you who care will be making the voyage to New York to see TR in his plays. Didn’t think so. If you cared, you would. But you don’t. Also, this is a television blog. By the way, TR Knight turned his back on his fans by leaving Grey’s Anatomy. He wasn’t forced out, as Ausiello kindly pointed out to us. This loyalty thing is supposed to be a two way street.

  • Kimmy

I live in Bostom but I will definitely be making the voyage to see him.
Who the heck tells you his fans won’t do it?
    You read minds now.
And no TR didn’t turn his back on us. Shonda did. She’s the one who made life so difficult for TR and used him so little that he was forced to quit.
That,s what Aussiello and many others pointed out to us, that Shonda was the one to blame. That’s why most people blame her, not us.
Given that the TV world is a big joke right now, and that Grey is an even bigger one, Broadway is a step up.
    No ghost sex there.
That’s why all the big actors are doing Broadway now.
Maybe you should let the great Angela lansbury know she’s a joke as she does mostly theater.
I bet she would laugh in your face.

  • Sylvie

Freaking exactly! Shonda pushed him out because she’s a vindictive homophobic piece of trash who couldn’t recognize talent if it bit her into the face.
TR should have stayed for what? 2 lines per episode?
George was a fabulous character but Shonda could never see it. She killed my favorite character, and I blame her completely for it.
She’s the one who stopped loving George, not him. He always gave everything he got until he finally got tired of every stupid extra getting more screentime than him.
I bet you anything if she had given him a story like she did Katie, he would have stayed too.
I care about him doing theater. I care so much I will be going to see him in both plays, Parade and this one, even if it costs me thousands of bucks.
I don’t know if others will, but I will. I’ll follow TR anywhere and everywhere.
Most of us care about TR. If you don’t, then don’t read.
If you do, it means you care enough to waste your time writing.

  • Marina

Obviously everyone who writes who cares have cared enough to actually write a comment.
Who cares? All of us who love TR.
TR stayed 5 years in the show. He gave me some of my favorite moments on TV. He gave me Gizzie. He made me laugh, cry and smile.
People move on from jobs all the time.
He doesn’t owe me anything. Shonda owed him to not waste his talent like she did.
Knowing that TR was leaving, she owed the George fans a moment filled with great George moments and a beautiful goodbye to him.
She owed him and us, and she failed miserably.
I’m devastated George is dying. I won’t be watching Grey anymore.
Do I blame him though? Not at all.
If Broadway makes him happy, if he gets the respect Shonda has NEVER given him, then I wish him all the best.
You bet I’m going to make the trip to see him.

  • Vanna

I care, and I’ll be seeing the play.

  • Nick Mayor

What a crappy play to revive. My ears still hurt from Phillip Bosco’s yelling when the show was first on Broadway. As for PARADE, GOOD LUCK TR. It’s a GREAT musical which should have won all the Tonys. What a great score and he should be honored to sing it.

  • Nicotine

All I see is a bunch of empty promises made up of a complex system of ones and zeroes. None of you ‘fans’ knew who TR Knight was before he was on Grey’s and you’re gonna forget him just as soon. And to all of you complaining about how Shonda killed George and how you’re so upset about it, you know you’re still going to watch the show next season and every season after that. Why anyone watched that show to begin with is beyond me. If you take the medical drama out of ER and the comedy out of Scrubs, you have Grey’s Anatomy. A bunch of ‘doctors’ who can’t stop having sex with each other, can’t make up their minds about who to be with, even though you know in the end everybody’s gonna be with somebody and they’ll live happily ever after. I surmised that from the very first episode. That show should be on during the daytime, because it’s not a drama, it’s a soap opera.

  • Michelle

Actually I haven’t watched Grey since Gizzie ended. They were the one thing keeping me watching.
Nicotine, stop acting like you know how people are going to act.
The ratings fell 16% this year, so a lot of people did QUIT watching.
I have a friend who only watches for George. She tapes the show and only watches his scenes. I’m convinced she won’t be watching without him.
I guess the ratings will tell. I expect the premiere to do great and then the ratings to slip big time.
I haven’t watched in two years now, and I still love TR.
I still rewatch the old episodes with George and Gizzie on my DVDs.
I didn,t know who TR was before Grey, but I know who he is now.
He,s a mega-talented actor, a classy sweetheart of a person and the most adorable person in the universe.
The guy’s pretty unforgettable and once I love someone, I love them for good.
If I hate someone, I hate them for good too.
    I’m pretty stable that way.
Good luck TR, not that you need it.

  • Michelle

And please don’t insult soaps. They are better than Grey any day of the week.
The one good thing Grey had going for them is their actors and Shonda makes them do such stupid stuff, you can’t even see their talent.
Or she criminally wastes them like TR.

  • Erin

If I can’t have George, I’m at least glad that he’s going back to his first true love, the stage. And I’m excited he’s coming to NY because that’s where I live!
You can check out my tribute to George (a countdown of his top 10 grey’s scenes) here: http://www.examiner.com/x-11365-Greys-Anatomy-Examiner~y2009m6d22-TR-Knights-top-ten-moments-on-Greys-Anatomy

  • Gabi

I adore TR. I’m so mad at Shonda for making him leave. I’m glad I can at least see him in Broadway. I have a friend who saw him in Noises off before he joined Grey, and she told me how amazing he was. I’m so excited about this.

  • mary

I adore him too and was really sad that they did not use him that much.
At least they will use his great talent.
GA won’t be the same without him!

  • stacy bean

Wow, u found a job for once and u will get fired from it soon u loser. http://www.niceguyswanted.com/

  • Corinne

For once? So Grey wasn’t a job the last five years? And what have you been doing with your life?
Actually if you knew how to read, you would see he got two jobs in very quick succession in two very good plays.
That’s mighty impressive, especially getting the lead in Parade, when he has one singing gig experience to his credit.
He must have given one heck of an audition for him to get it, but then that wouldn’t surprise me.
TR is brilliant in everything he does, whether it’s Mozart (another job he had), George or Sesame Street. He’ll be great in those two plays too.
I’m convinced he can do it all, and at least he doesn’t waste his time posting hateful stupid comments on Internet sites.
    IMO, YOU’RE THE LOSER!
Mary, you’re right. GA won’t be the same without our George.

  • Karen

    You go babe!
    I’m so happy for you.
Go and knock them all dead!
I’ll miss you so much on Grey. I love my George so much, but I wish you only the best.
    Love you!
