Exclusive: 'Desperate Housewives' recruits 'Sopranos' vet Drea de Matteo

Drea-de-Matteo_l Afraid Desperate Housewives would lose its edge without Nicolette Sheridan’s Edie around? You can fuhgettaboutit.

Emmy-winning Sopranos heroine Drea de Matteo is joining the cast as Wisteria Lane’s newest vixenish housewife, sources confirm to me exclusively.

De Matteo, who will be a series regular, will play the matriarch of a new Italian family. Casting is underway for her landscape designer husband and their tightly wound son.

Thoughts? IMHO, this is the second coolest piece of casting of the 2009-10 season (behind Katee Sackhoff joining 24, natch). Agree?

Woah…Desperate Housewives just got interesting again. This is great casting news. I loved Drea de Matteo on The Sopranos.

  • Aaron

that’s awesome! she’s been criminally absent from tv since sopranos ended and joey flopped.

  • Adam
  • Derek

This chick was in the awful Friends spin-off with Joey, right?

  • Corran

Adrianna was my favorite character on the Sopranos! I even watched Joey just because Drea was on it. Maybe I’ll have to get back into Desperate Sh*theads.

    this is TOOO HOT!
She’s so hot and DH just got HOTTER :)

  • sassyc

I was hoping to see her return to FX’s Sons of Anarchy as Jaxs’ strung out ex wife. Guess we know what her fate is with those bikers! LOL

  • Elle

Wow this is great casting!First Katee on 24 then Joanna on Gossip Girl then Robert Buckley on OTH!OMG this TV season will have some hot casts.Plus I know this girl is talented in the comedy world since she was the only funny one on Joey!

  • Carol

This is the whitest show on TV other than NCIS.

  • pola

She is hot, but Marcia Cross is the hottest: http://www.actressscene.com/search/label/Marcia%20Cross

  • KJ

Hey Carol, Eva Longoria is not white.

  • ShutUpRob

First “Joey,” now “Doofus Dumbwives,” what the heck has happened to Drea’s taste in scripts to have her fall so far from The Sopranos?

hey kj, eva longoria is most likely have some white in her and maybe some indian, hispanic is not a race.either way carol quit race obsessing, i dont care if the show is all purple

  • Nicotine

I have to agree with Carol. Desperate Housewives is the whitest show on TV. Not just because they have a limited mix of races in the show, but because I don’t know anyone of any other race who watches the show. But, in their defense, the majority of their viewers are white women, so it only makes good sense to market it to that demographic.

  • Nick

I agree – this is exciting. Any word on if she will be this season’s villain? With Dave in the mental institution and the Applegates forever banned from the Lane, it wouldn’t be DH without a mystery.

  • KatyMay

Great addition to DW…will be fun to watch again!

  • SOA Fan

Really disappointing if this means she will not be returning for any episodes of Sons of Anarchy next season – she was great on that show.

  • Andy Taylor

Ohhh, Landscaper? Doesn’t Gabby have experience with this profession?

  • Julia

I haven’t watched DH since the second season but I’d watch Drea De Matteo in anything so I’m sure I’ll tune in.

  • whatevs

I don’t watch the show, but I’m really glad she’s being cast in a network show. She is really very talented and I was always sad she got killed off on The Sopranos.

  • bunker

This is gonna be fun! I love new neighbors on this show. :)

Since they are bringing on Drea DeMatteo, I would have much rather she be involved in one of the unsolved things that have happened on Wisteria Lane in the past and I also don’t like the premise of it just being a new family. It would be better if she were cast say as a PI that Carlos (who after years of financial troubles, is back making a lot of $$$$ again) hires to crack the cold case of who ran over his mother (and it be perfect right now too, with Andrew a regular in the cast and Bree having an affair with her divorce lawyer, Karl and he could defend Andrew) – the conflict possibilities are endless Carlos and Gaby (Jesse Metcalfe could be back for a short stint), Bree v. Gaby, Bree v. Susan, Andrew v. Mike, Susan v. Karl – what if one of the Scavo kids actually saw the accident when they were kids (could integrate them too). This would be far more interesting and be a true, classic, soapy umbrella story.

I could watch Drea hawking OxiClean marathons.

  • BINO7

I think that the addition of Drea can only enhance the show. I feel that the show was getting a little boring. Drea’s hotness will also without a doubt bring more male viewers on board.

  • Barry

Is she leaving The Sons of Anarchy?

  • Jon

    Eva Longoria isn’t white!

  • Renato

Someone said De Matteo’s taste in scripts has gone down-hill ever since “The Sopranos”, get this: one single episode of DH that you pick at random in the whole series so far has had more viewers in its debut than every single episode of The Sopranos, so shut it. DH has great writing and it’s praised for it, and you can’t compare both shows since they’re both different genres. But if you want to compare, DH kicks The Sopranos’ butt.
Also, Drea de Matteo trying to nail Andrew for running over Mama Solis like someone suggested? That’s ridiculous! First of all, why would Carlos do that now when that happened approximately ten years ago on the show, and Andrew has been a regular ever since season two, not just this past season.
And people are saying they’ll start watching DH because Drea is on it… to watch a show just because of some actor is pathetic. Just like people did with Gale Harold this past season.

  • Renato

I am actually concerned about Drea joining the cast, I saw her death on “The Sopranos” and she sucked. She just kept whining out “No. No.” as the man dragged her away from the car. The woman is about to be executed and instead of screaming her lungs out she says “No. No.” like someone is trying to get it on with her and she’s got a headache. What’s up with that?
But I guess if Marc Cherry cast her in the role that means she must’ve nailed it in her audition, as the show’s got a great cast and Marc wouldn’t hire someone who can’t act, so I guess Drea has evolved ever since that death scene. I sure as hell hope so…
Also, why would people bother to comment only to say DH is a bad show? If people don’t like it, they don’t watch it, and if they don’t watch it, they sure as hell have no reason to comment, so shut up people! DH is far better than any show out there except maybe “Lost”, I don’t know. And this is not my opinion because I don’t watch “Lost”, but I hear it’s great.

  • mark

I dunno anything about this Sopranos thing she was in, but I am really glad to see another alumni from “Joey” land another great role!
