This just in: Bryan Fuller exits 'Heroes'

Categories: Heroes, News

Heroes-Bryan-Fuller_l Just as Heroes was gaining some creative momentum comes word of another setback: Bryan Fuller has vacated his post as consulting producer.

The acclaimed Pushing Daisies auteur tells me that he left to focus on developing new projects for NBC, and not (as some have speculated) due to creative differences with series creator Tim Kring.

“I’m crafting two pilots right now and it’s a lot of work,” admits Fuller, who has an overall deal with NBC. “It was just too hard to [juggle] Heroes and my development; something had to give.”

Fuller’s exit was first reported by Herc at Ain’t It Cool News.

Fuller returned to Heroes last December, shortly after ABC dropped the ax on Daisies. Many (yours truly included) credited him with the show’s end-of-season creative rebirth.

Reaction to Fuller’s exit? Are you as bummed as I am? Sound off below!

Actually Michael, the Nick C Blog broke this news before Herc and you.

  • Illyria

Fantastic news! His talents are wasted on crap like Heroes.

  • Snarf

I think I’m dunzo as far as Heroes is concerend.

  • Christine

Hey, his talents are deserved elsewhere. I’m definitely game for anything he’ll make if it’s anything like Dead Like Me or Pushing Daisies:)

  • shuggins

Oh great! Heroes is probably in their last season then….BOOOOOOO!!!!! Come back Brian Fuller!!!!

  • Briana

Lie. Lies! No!!!!!!!! First Pushing Daisies (RIP). Now, Heroes. What’s next? All of a sudden Dexter’s going to end?

  • Anitamargarita

I’m with Christine – Bryan’s talent is wasted on that show. I cannot wait to find out what his new project is!

  • Thataboy

Good! Heroes is a piece-of-crap, dumbed-down show. The man behind Wonderfalls and Pushing Daisies should not be wasted on something so pedestrian.

  • Christine

Who else wasn’t going to be happy with Bryan Fuller’s return to Heroes unless “Millie” ended up losing an eye, then going to live with her shut-in sister with whom they had a niece who just died but not really becuase she was brought back to life by her piemaker childhood sweetheart but they can’t touch or she’ll die forever so they solve crimes and rename the show something lawsuit-proof like Daisies Pushing?

  • Shean

    DAMN!
Still in shock over this. How the hell could Heroes let him go leave ? Creative differences ? Are you kidding me? Heores should be listening to everything Bryan Fuller says! Would have brought the show back to Season 1 greatness. Now I am not sure.
BUT I will still watch. Heroes til the end :)

He wanted off a sinking ship?
I totally agree, he deserves better than Heroes (and he had it with Pushing Daisies, thanks ABC).
It’ll be better for him to develop new stuff for NBC than to waste his time on Heroes.

  • Kermonk

And there goes Heroes down the drain. Such a fall. Oh well.
(And John Doe, nobody reads Nick C’s blog, not even himself *g*)

  • hello

I really don’t see a future for Heroes anymore. It will probably premiere with even lower numbers, it’s sad but volume 3 was pathetic writing that really hurt it.

  • Mike

This is odd. Most considered Heroes dead in the water before Bryan returned and only with his return did a small amount of hopeful buzz return. Now he’s out? How does that make sense? Wait – this is the network that is giving us “I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here”. Now we see what they consider quality entertainment.

I’ve been rooting for this since Bryan came back to Heroes. He needs to develop his own original programs. He was hamstrung by Heroes and would have ended up just treading water. Can’t wait to see what death-obsessed, quirky, voice-overed thing he comes up with next. As long as it has a female lead character with a boy’s name (George, Jaye, Chuck), I’m in.

This is outrageous. Heroes was a GREAT GREAT show during its first season. Bryan leaves for its second season and the show becomes a ghetto sci-fi story/mexican telenovela. Predictable with terrible plot lines for both season 2 and 3. I have to say that Volume 3: Villains was A DISASTER. People dying everywhere, killing or writing out good characters like Elle. They went from a mix between ordinary and extraordinary stories to all about extraordinary people, powers, formulas, companies.
Fuller comes back for Volume 4 and Heroes starts showing some signs of hope that maybe it can be fixed. Episode 20: Cold Snap was AMAZING. He is so talented. In just one episode he brought back what Heroes is all about. Kring writes the season finale and the show goes back to crap again. Mediocre finale.
Next season is truly the last season of Heroes. Kring, Pokaski and Coliete show listen to Fuller. Instead they try to rewrite XMen.

  • John

Well, so much for me watching Heroes again. Dang.

  • Ryan

I feel like Bryan Fuller lacks any kind of…work ethic. I mean, the season’s just gone into production and he’s already flitting to new projects? I’m sorry, but that’s not fair to anyone and is kind selfish if this is the real explanation for why he’s quitting “Heroes.” His departure from the show will likely spell the end of “Heroes” at the end of this season. I don’t see a way around that. So his need to leave the show at the beginning of the season could very well end the show completely.
I just think that Bryan Fuller should have waiting until the majority of the season’s storylines had been crafted and planned out before he went and quit to create pilots that may or may not be picked up. And, also, why would he be creating pilots now? For midseason pickup or next fall? It’s crazy.

  • Jason Breslin

Yay, now he can do the Daisies movie, right? Boo, now they’re bringing Maya back, right?

  • Vanessa

Heroes Sucks, Bryan was too good for it.

  • Taylor

can’t wait to see what new amazing theatrics Fuller has up his sleeve. I’m a fan of all of his original shows, so if this means we get more unique programming, I say hallelujah. that’s exactly what I (and television in general) need right now.

  • Adam

    To quote the movie Waterboy…
    “Damn…WE SUCK AGAIN!”

  • minderbinder

Ouch for Heroes. I’m glad to see he has new projects, but that sure looked like Heroes last shot at getting things back on track.

  • Julia

Every time Fuller starts a new show, it’s fantastic- until it gets cancelled. I wish he’d stick with Heroes & focus on saving that one rather than on another show. Eh, well, whatever he does, I’ll watch until his show goes off the air like Pushing Daisies, Wonderfalls, etc…

  • Yeah yeah

Heroes is sooooo over! If he’s running away means it can’t be fixed. The damage is already done! At least we had 4 seasons, no?

  • Fergus

I say good! Fuller deserves better than HEROES, I’m sure whatever he does next will be amazing.

  • Scott King

I call bulls*. He’s spinning things to make them sound nice. Sure he’s busy with other work, but things behind the scenes at “Heroes” have to be a mess.

  • Vetinari

Nobody I know watches Heroes anymore, the general consensus is stick a fork in it, it’s done.

  • a_reader

heroes was done after the crap-tastic second season. it has really fallen faster in quality than any show i can think of in recent memory.
good for fuller. jump off that sinking ship and go create some more amazing television.

  • milaxx

count me as one of those who was happy about Fuller’s return. The show as struggled since season 2, partly due to the writer’s strike, but mostly just to bad writing/plots. without him I have little hope for this show that had so much potential.
