'House' boss to Huddy fans: 'I apologize'

Categories: House, News

House-laurie-edelstein_lIt’s been more than a month since House fans learned that the much-heralded Huddy hookup was nothing more than a figment of Dr. Crabbypants’ unstable imagination and they’re still feeling a tad sexually frustrated. Not to mention a little duped by producers who months earlier promised to take the long-simmering relationship to the next level. What do those crazy kids have to say for themselves? And what’s in store for Huddy in season 6? Find out after the jump…

“I don’t think we cheated them [but] I do think we teased them,” series creator David Shore admitted last night just prior to taking the stage for a House-centric panel discussion at the Paley Center for Media. “And I apologize for being a tease. But I don’t think we cheated fans because that was a legitimate storyline that made sense. And we will follow up on it.

“It’s not like it didn’t matter,” Shore elaborated. “The fact that House had that hallucination is extremely significant. It was not like he woke up in a shower and all of last year was just a dream. It wasn’t what you might have thought it was going to be, but it was big. That was a glimpse into what House desires.”

Shore’s Housemate, exec producer Katie Jacobs, said that while she understands why some fans felt misled, she insisted that making viewers think the sex was real was imperative to the story. “We could not let [on] that the actual events that he imagined were not real beforehand,” she explained. “The audience needed to experience [House's hallucinations] as though they were real because that is what he did.”

Echoing Shore’s comments, Jacobs said the fake sex will have very real repercussions for Huddy once House is sprung from the asylum (House returns Sept. 21). “I don’t think he hallucinated that scenario with someone he works with and someone he has feelings for in some random way,” she pointed out. “I think that was his mind telling him something, and I think fans can count on that story not being over yet. For me, that was the twist that was most symbolic of how serious his mental illness is. Hearing a voice that manifests itself as Amber is one sort of random thing, but Cuddy is a real person who is still alive and still in his life. It is meaningful, just not in the way that Huddy fans were hoping for.”

It was certainly meaningful to Lisa Edelstein, who didn’t hallucinate making out with Hugh Laurie. “Even though it didn’t happen for real, I got to shoot that scene — and I might get to shoot another later on down the road,” she said with a laugh. Edelstein then delivered this message to Huddy fans: “Stay with me. Give Huddy time. Don’t give up hope.”

Indeed, Shore said he’s “absolutely open” to the possibility of Huddy having actual sex this season. “That’s not to say it will happen or won’t,” he hedged. “We are just starting to work on next season and it is not all decided. But clearly he wants it to happen — at least subconsciously. And I think we know that Cuddy likes him, too.”

Okay, Huddy fans: Are you buyin’ what they’re sellin’? Do you agree that the end justified the means? Sound off below! (Reporting by Carrie Bell)

I’d rather not have hope. I’d rather “Huddy” go away and never come back.

  • Maud

i understand that people were disappointed, but i personnally loved the whole thing… it was the most romantic think house could ever do. i always took this “tease” as a way for us to be SURE that indeed house didnt just want to get into bed with her… he wants her to want him because he wants her but is afraid because feelings are involved…. as for me, it might sound cheesy, but my hope is getting stronger as time passes…!!!

  • Roberta

    Don’t. believe. a word.

  • Nia

yippee, more Huddy nonsense next season…. I liked Cuddy better when she wasn’t acting like a 12 year old, and I can’t stand the huddy plotline, it’s been handled like 12 years old too…
So thank you Jacobs and Shore, now I know that I won’t even bother watching the new season.
The huddy shipper can squee all they want, but the one who love the show for what it’s supposed to be, a procedural show around a crabby doc can surely understand where I’m coming from…

Somewhat redeemed. Only started watching House recently (i know i know, very slow of me) and the setup does make sense to me. Probably in the absolute minority here. I agree with Katie, it needed to be believable for team House to move forward into next season. Can’t have a leg/pain/narcotic problem all through the series!

  • Adam

They should apologize for the horrible season, not only for the last stunt they pulled. What a horrible season for this once mighty show.
They really need to go back to basics next season.

I, for one, was immensely RELIEVED to find out that the whole thing had been a hallucination.

  • sweetiepie1019

You know, I’ve had enough with these storylines. Izzie, Booth, House – what is with all the hallucination sex? I’m very disappointed in all the show-runners this season. Get an original idea why don’t you? And from now on, don’t make the fan-favorite couple have sex and take it back by making it a hallucination. I’m looking at you, House and Bones. Commit. Either make the leap with your couple or don’t, but don’t think that this new sort of teasing will make us happy. This is getting annoying. And what do you mean they may or may not have sex for real now? Guys, what are you DOING?

  • Cara

Ugh Huddy is gross, and Lisa Edelstein really needs to back off from the advances towards her married co-star.
I want to know when we’re getting that “season of House and Cameron” that David Shore said would be season 4, aka the strike season. Huddy = JUMPING THE SHARK.

  • Kristen

I agree with AJ. I was IMMENSELY relieved that it was all a hallucination. I just don’t understand Huddy.

  • Sanna

Why are they sucking up and apolizing to “Huddy” fans” when they have not said anything OR apolizied to Cameron fans and House/Cameron fans? Eh, I’m so glad I’m not in this fandom anymore. Why would I watch a show when the writers are only thinking of ONE part of the audience and ignore the rest??

  • mari

Wait and see mode. We knew it wouldn’t be going away, freelancer told us a while ago. On the other hans, the bitter ones are at it again. They only fuel the Huddy popularity and don’t even know it.

  • merdow

heh. david shore is a closet romantic. who knew?

  • splintercll

Don’t believe a word they say. I trust Lisa more than Shore or Jacobs. Ausiello (and minions), thank you so much for bringing over some Huddy goodness.

  • Mina

I don’t give a crap what everyone else says, cuz this news has just made me the happiest Huddy since the devastation of the May 11th finale. And Lisa Edelstein is amazing (and is NOT advancing on Hugh Laurie, so all you losers, back off!). VIVA LA HUDDY FOREVA!

  • David4

Just make next season better than last season, which was 85% garbage.

  • Mina

I don’t give a crap what anyone says cuz this news has made me the happiest Huddy, since the May 11th finale devastation. And I LOVE Lisa Edelstein for saying what she said (and by the way, she is NOT advancing on Hugh Laurie, so all you losers, back off!) VIVA LA HUDDY FOREVA!!

  • Sofi

why do I feel like I’m reading it about BONES instead of HOUSE?

  • Lexi

I LOVE THEM ALL!!! All is forgiven!
Lisa Edelstein is so sweet!!! <333

  • David H.

I find it interesting that the bitter fangirls are lashing on Lisa for answering questions. What is she supposed to say? That he is gross? JMo gushed about him several times when they had the whole House/Cameron storyline going in the first seasons. Give it a rest, people. You are running out of excuses.

  • Sam

Personally, I don’t care for Huddy OR Hameron. There’s enough story in House without mixing in contrived romance. Most egregious, of course, is Foreman/Thirteen, which cannot end quickly enough. I wish the show would go back to exploring the friendships/rivalries/professional relationships, like the awesome way House’s relationship with Chase developed over the first three seasons.

  • XK

I thought the episode was great, and it really was a phenomenal way to bring home how messed up House was in the head.
I’m not a huge fan of the changes that have been made over the past season with Cuddy’s character, but I have no complaints whatsoever about the finale, which was one of the best episodes of the season.

  • charlie

this is the best news i’ve heard in ages!!!!!! i don’t reli care for wat all the anti-huddies have to say, because this article is making a lot of people very happy indeed!!!!

  • XK

And the difference between this show and Bones is that the House writers still actually give a crap and bother trying to write things that make some sort of sense and continue an actual ongoing narrative. The Bones writers appear to simply be cashing their checks.

  • Ronaldo

Well I never thought that DS needed to apologize, its his show. But I am glad to have some reassurance that the hallucination was significant from DS and KJ. Can’t wait for season 6!

  • Claudia

i just love seeing the bitterness of some people. DS didnt need to to apologize, he can do what he wants with his show. but still, its great to see him acknowledge he teased us. and back off Lisa, she was her normally bubbly vivacious self, if it was Jmo u wouldnt being saying a think. Denial aint just a river in Egypt.
Huddy is well and truly end game. get over it.

  • ada

this is stupid. I hate Huddy and I thought hallcination sex had far more meaning than them hooking up for real could have had in House’s condition(not to mention how stupid it would have been because only on tv someone in House’s state could have actually had sex).
Shore and Jacobs love no one but Huddy fans and they don’t even understand their subtext, they want blunt,in your face sexual innuendo and nothing else, this is what ruins this show, the romantic stupidity.
How about apologizing to everyone else? How about the House/Cameron fans who were teased for 3 years than not only given nothing but faced with a situation where TPTB act as if House/Cam never existed in the first place? How about apologizing to those people ,the majority, who couldn’t care less about romance and just want their medical drama back? How about apologizing to Cameron fans and Chase fans(not as a couple,as characters)whose fav. characters were transformed into walking cliches while 13 gets all their screentime?

  • Suds

I think he had cheated us. I was not the only one wwho felt this. From now on I’ll only believe it when i see it. Even though i know Huddy aint over yet.

  • lisabian

Lisa is the best. Seriously. I don’t even care DS and KJ apologized. I only trust her.

  • Shore is an a&&hole

Why don’t they apologize for teasing fans of Cameron and Chase for two seasons saying that they would be back and use them more and that they were trying to have them in every episode, blah, blah, blah?
