Finally, some good news for poor, lovelorn Callie: Grey’s Anatomy has officially promoted her on-screen leading lady, Jessica Capshaw, to a full-fledged series regular, sources confirm to me exclusively.
The news hardly comes as a surprise. Last month, series creator Shonda Rhimes all but signed off on Capshaw’s promotion when I interviewed her after the finale. “I love Jessica Capshaw,” she gushed. “And when I say love I mean love. She couldn’t be a more wonderful person, and I feel like the chemistry Arizona and Callie have feels like the Meredith and Derek chemistry to me. I find them delightful to watch.”
The ex-Practice star joined Grey’s last February as a recurring love interest for Sara Ramirez’s Callie. Her arrival came on the heels of the controversial dismissal of Brooke Smith as Callie’s girlfriend Dr. Hahn.
What do you think? Happy Capshaw is sticking around? Are you as high on Callizona as Rhimes is? Or are you still holding out hope that Dr. Hahn will one day escape from Seattle Grace’s parking lot? Sound off below!

LOVE HER!! YAYYYYYY
yay so excited! love love love arizona1!
Finally! Lead female characters in a relationship! I’m glad Callie & Arizona will be able to create some rich relationships (with one another, and other characters).
That’s good, she was a great addition to the show. Now THATS some NEW news.

Best possible news on this front. Jessica earned it.
I can’t help but be ambivalent about this. I mean, I LIKE Arizona, but Grey’s Anatomy was about the story of FIVE interns. There was no need to kill George off, she only needed to ship him off to the military. Arizona is a good character, but she’s not a replacement for one of the characters I have known and loved for five years. I am happy for Capshaw having steady work, and I wish her luck with it, but her becoming a regular is not enough to interest me into tuning in regularly this upcoming season. TR Knight’s departure is part of the reason why I won’t. This is not the same show anymore.
Ecstatic she is staying. She is a fantastic addition to the cast! Yay!
I actually really miss Brooke Smith. Sure, she and Callie were a little awkward together, but no less so than Arizona and Callie. The difference I feel is that Hahn added something the show increasingly lacks: a grounded, sensible, intelligent presence. Especially after Addison left, Hahn seemed to be the only character left functioning in the complex, sometimes-cutthroat, bracing reality that made Season One so good.
Great news!!! great actress and character! Arizona fast became a fav character of mine
This is probably the best news I’ve heard all week. Love Arizona! And her relationship with Callie.
She did good work on The Practice-BOY I miss that show.

Their relationship is my favorite story line! I look forward to seeing more of it next season!
I think it’s fantastic. i think she’ll be the first lesbian series regular on a major network and that’s great, because it’s progressive. There have been plenty of gay men on television, but gay women seem to be a little scarier to people. Her character will def. help to break that mold i think… Plus, Jessica Capshaw is just adorable and great on the show…
yay!
Hate her and lesbian callie
Boo. I couldn’t care less about her character and I hate the whole thing with Callie. She also sucked on the Practice.
I like her, as long as they make her cool and not crazy (like they were heading for the last few episodes, with the crying and unprofessional freakouts in public). I love Jessica Capshaw.
It’ll be cool to see a lesbian on broadcast tv, the only one I can think of before her is Kerry on ER (of course, beloved ER was groundbreaking in so many ways)….
I really like Capshaw character; glad she’s staying; but I’m really going to miss George. He and Cristina are the comic relief of the show and the best part of it!
really like that Capshaws character is staying. not happy about losing George, he and Cristina were the best thing on the show; their comic relief was the best; would really like to see more of Sloan, he’s way hot!
I really like Jessica-although at first I wasn’t sure. I’m a huge fan of Callie on Grey’s and I’m glad they are pursuing this story line. I was sad to see the character of Dr. Hahn go-I liked their chemistry but I also loved how cut throat she could be (I think anyone who likes “House” also would feel that). Anyway-I’m excited to see how ABC handles the relationship. Anything that showcases the talent of Sara Ramirez more is top on my list! Congrats JC!
I love Jessica’s Arizona character in Grey’s. And she’s not only Callie’s love interest, I think Arizona plays really well against Chandra Wilson’s Bailey. This is excellent news.
They should have just paired Callie with Mark and not bring on yet another full time character. The cast is full as it is and now there’s yet another.
like capshaw and altho i like callie she just soesnt cut it as a lesbian she is a straight shooter if i ever saw 1 so keep capshaw and ….oooooo…. i know make Baily a lesbian!!!!!!!
I really do not like the pairing. No chemistry. Callie should have stayed with Mark.
Totally happy about this. I love how Jessica what Jessica does with Dr. Robbins. Her character is infectious. Love, love, love Calzona and can’t wait to see more.
Hmmm, the show stopped being just about the five interns now residents when they brought in Addison, Sloan, Torres, Lil Grey, and Owen mmm’kay?
Pure pukage –
That all I have to say.
It’s alright I guess. I don’t really find them believable as lesbians. I thought Hahn was more believable and in turn made Callie more believable.
rememberwhengreyswasaboutsmartcompetitivedoctors: i remember. and i miss that too. Burke, Hahn…and interns actually eager to be excellent. Calzona is very unbelievable. At least she had chemistry with Hahn. I never got why Shonda ignored the real connenction between Callie and Sloane. They had MerDer potential, I cared about those two.
Seems like this adds some gasoline to the Hahn-replaced-for-prettier-lesbian fire.
She looks oddly orange in this pic.
