Scoop: 'Ghost Whisperer,' 'Tree Hill' do time warp (again)

One-tree-hill-whsiperer_l Okay, TV’s time jumping trend is officially Out. Of. Control.

A Ghost Whisperer insider confirms that producers of the CBS drama are toying with the idea of kicking the new season off five years into the future. The move would allow the show to introduce Jim and Melinda’s son as a pre-schooler instead of as a newborn.

As you’ll recall, the season ended with Melinda learning that her offspring would possess psychic powers even greater than her own. Probably a tough story to do with a burping, teething toddler.

Meanwhile, One Tree Hill — which famously leaped ahead four years at the start of season 5 — is mulling another flash forward at the onset of season 7 this fall. But this one’s not nearly as drastic; a OTH source says the action would likely pick up just one year later.

Thoughts?

A short-time jump for OTH could help explain why CMM and Hilarie Burton left…

  • Christine

i am all for it if it means OTH recasts the role of Jamie… i find the kid that plays him totally obnoxious… or maybe he could be away at boarding school? that would be good too!

  • seekay

just keep repeating the phrase “JUMP THE SHARK”"JUMP THE SHARK”"JUMP THE SHARK”"JUMP THE SHARK”"JUMP THE SHARK”"JUMP THE SHARK”
and wave buh bye to these shows :)
move along home ppl, nothing here to see….

  • christina

well it looks like Ghost Whisperer is a go-ahead, since they are casting for the kid.

  • Bryan

makes sense how else are they going to explain the lucas and peyton leaving

  • chuck

I like Jennifer Love Hewitt and the cast of Ghost Whisperer, I just wish they were all on a different show. I don’t buy Psychic abilities at all so Its hard to buy the premise week in and week out. Still the programs a solid hit

I can see why they have to do the time jump on GW, but they should have thought of that sooner… they should have pushed off killing Jim and getting Melinda pregnant until the final season of the show because I’m scared the whole child story line could potentially cause GW to officially jump the shark.

The GW time jump makes sense, but they should have thought about this sooner. They should have done the whole kill Jim and get Melinda pregnant story line on the final season so that we get a happy ending with Jim and Melinda having a baby born, etc…. I’m just worried that the child story line could potentially cause GW to offically jump the shark, and I would hate to see that happen.

  • M.

It does make sense for both shows seeing as with GW it’s hard to have the supernatural child’s gifts manifest with a baby.
And with OTH they have to explain the absence of CMM and HB somehow right? I’m not going to knock it because I thought OTH might suck after the 4 year jump and it didn’t. So who knows. As for those saying Ausiello’s scoop isn’t original, how do we know that he didn’t get his info on this at the same time as the other site. Sometimes news leaks to more than one source at a time. Maybe he had it first but didn’t get a chance to post it yet. Who knows unless you were there, so simmer down, and enjoy the news wherever it comes from :-)

  • Ceal

i agree with the jump forward for OTH, it will totally help with CMM and Hil leaving, the first four season were set in just a two year span so when they did the 4 year jump it was nice to get away from the high school drama and on to real life stuff and the show has never been better. i trust in Mark and the writing team so they can do this.

  • daveedt

stopped watching GW whenthey killed Jim AND PUT HIM IN ANOTHER BODY ONLY TO HAVE MELINDA FALL INLOVE WITH ‘BODY’…..REEKS OF SHARKS CIRCLING THE SHOW. THE ONLY SHOW WORSE THAT THAT WAS THE WHOLE MAKING LOVE TO A DEAD DENNY STORYLINE ON gREYS ANATOMY !!! Sorry for caps…Ausiello, you’re awesome !!!!

    Jump. Shark.

Courtney: I completely agree with your comment!

Don’t watch ‘em; don’t care. But if a show uses the “time jump” in the presentation of effective storytelling, it can be a good idea. At least they aren’t just aging the kid without acknowledging it onscreen, like so many shows have done.

  • Rebekah

Time-traveling for the sake of time-traveling is a terrible and dangerous plot device. However, flash forwards–like the original one on “One Tree Hill” and in the most recent season of “Desperate Housewives”–can be just the trick to get a storyline moving. “Lost” handled its time-traveling plots with great finesse, but I’m afraid “Ghost Whisperer” may not perform as well. It’ probably best to stop with the flash forwards and just let our favorite TV characters live in the here and now.

  • Nat

I don’t watch GW, but as for OTH I think a 1 year jump wouldn’t be too drastic, they’d be able to pull it off – besides, 3 months will have already passed anyway, so it’ll only be like a jump of a few months!

  • JDRoth

The shows that need to fast forward are Gossip Girl and 90210. Both shows have characters that think they are adults….they don’t do things that high school kids normally do.

  • Rock Golf

If Jim & Melinda’s kid need to talk to someone their own age about dealing with seeing ghosts and visions, I understand Marie Dubois is moving into the next door time slot.
Really, GW wasn’t similar enough to Medium already? They had to add psychic kids? When Medium is switching to the same network and night?

  • Tom

I don’t mind the flash forwards for various shows. Worked wonders for Desperate Housewives in terms of an adrenaline rush for the show.
While not a consistent watcher of GW, it may give the show a ’shot in the arm’.
I think (especially dramatic series) could use this type of jump to reinvigorate the supporting cast.

  • KATHLEEN BERGERON

I am dubious about the OTH leap, but then again, I am dubious about it going on without two of its staple characters. As for Ghost Whisperer, I found this season stretched credulity, even for this show–and am finding it hard to really care about the psychic child she is undoubtedly having. I wonder if they will age her as well as making the kid older..?

  • Realme2008

Who cares about One Tree Hill. I’m not watching now that Hilarie(Peyton) isn’t going to be on the show anymore. I’m sticking my middle finger up at One Tree Hill!!! :)

  • ML

I think OTH almost has to do a time leap in order to make the Leyton departure believable. I’ve been such a huge fan of that show, but have reservations about season 7 without the main character, Lucas. I’m REALLY gonna miss Chad Michael Murray in that role…he was the star of OTH.

  • matt

as someone who was a regular dvr’er of ghost whisperer–i gotta say the show really has been rather sucking since altering the dynamic of Melinda and Jim—i wasn’t already the biggest fan of Jamie Kennedy’s character (i get that Jay Mohr got his own sitcom so i understand that) but the killing off of Jim only to bring him back was beyond ridiculous. Her having a kid is just gonna be even more so.
AS for One Tree Hill—why the hell not? the last time jump worked fantastically!

  • Bruno

HI. it is BRUNO. I zink ze Ghost Whisperer should flash forward 100 years…to when zey are all DEAD! DEAD DEAD

  • kate

As far as OTH goes, it certainly couldn’t make their chances of surviving after losing HB and CMM any worse. It might actually help them. But GW? Why would it be hard to show with a baby? Charmed did it. Kids might not have had psychic abilities but they still managed to pull it off. But I don’t even watch the show so I don’t really care.

  • QuickDraw

Ghost Whisperer totally blew chunks this past season–sure, move it ahead 5 years–and cancel it while you are at it.
The original first shows were good, now, it’s like, what one would find in a full diaper.

  • JGM

Ghost Whisperer is a train wreck. So glad I stopped watching! (Though I always had hopes it would get back on track (no pun intended).) Instead, it’s just becoming more and more ridiculous.

  • Devin

Having a time jump of even a few months would have sufficed to explain Lucas and Peyton’s departure but a year helps with the fact that it’s noticeable that Jamie is getting older and can help have Brooks business be on track instead of us watching her build it back up. Also if Nathan’s career has taken off or failed at least we won’t have to see every single step.
