Dexter
has found its next Big Bad.

Sources confirm to me exclusively that John Lithgow is joining the season 4 cast as Walter Simmons, an unassuming suburbanite who has been living a dual
life as one of America’s most prolific and deadliest serial killers. When the mad man (who is dubbed the “Trinity Killer” because he always kills in threes) relocates to Miami, Dexter becomes obsessed (or inspired?) by his efficient killing methods and ability to evade capture for almost three decades. (This is the new antagonist role exec producer Sara Colleton teased back in April.)

Dexter’s fourth season premieres on Sept. 27. Oh, almost forgot, bonus casting scoop: Keith Carradine is reprising his role as Deb’s daddy-figure ex, F.B.I. Special Agent Frank Lundy, for multiple episodes.

JOHN LITHGOW! This will be an amazing season, for sure.

  • debsbabydaddy

    love it!
    cant wait!!
    great scoopage!

  • Julie

He has been living a “duel” life? With pistols at 10 paces, or with swords?

  • Jay

Duel life? Proofread articles before posting them, much? Or all faith is in spell check?

  • @JoseBurch

This is going to be one helluva birthday present for me… (/27 is my b-day…YAY ME

  • mimi

Oh dear. Pistols or swords? I don’t think he’d do well with pistols.
That said, I’m glad he’ll be there; I look forward to it!

John Lithgow … wasn’t he big in movies a few decades back? ;)

  • marvirga

Sounds really good. Much better than that whole Jimmy Smits/Miguel crap last season. Awesome show, but they almost lost me over that one.

  • fio

Good news. John Lithgow is a great actor. It will make this show even better.

    Buckaroo Banzai!!

  • Interesting…

So, is John Lithgow the “Jeff Daniels-type” of actor the producers were looking for? I’m not complaining about Lithgow (in fact, I look forward to seeing him on Dexter). I’m just wondering what is meant by a “Jeff Daniels-type” of actor.

  • Adam

Wow…GREAT addition to the cast! He’s an amazing actor who is funny, yet can play the disturbed character well.

Sounds like they are doing the same formula again. I hope they put a fresh spin on this one. Maybe this time he won’t form a “friendship” with the killer. This might be good. I love John Lithgow.
BY THE WAY, that picture cracks me up. I remember that episode. It was awkward how he put his finger on the table. It still looks awkward :)

So lifting from press releases counts as “exclusive” now?

Ok, I still can’t get over the fact that Michael Hall married the actress who plays Deb. Yikes, what a bone rack she is. I hope this season will be A LOT better than 3 because I was very disappointed with the writing. Also, I hope they’ll find some interesting plot line for Rita as it’s becoming tiresome to try to figure out what other cosmetic procedures she’s done to her face and body.

  • Clive

Thank God Keith Carradine will be gainfully employed again — plus we don’t have to guess who Deb will be banging this year.

  • AJT

“Exclusively?” What kind of BS is this? This Michael Ausiello guy must have delusions of grandeur. The exact same thing from 16 other media outlets was posted online at the same time, including the LA Times and Broadcasting & Cable.

  • Jonathan

Great news about Lithgow and Lundy/Carradine. I love them both.
I’m going to predict that Deb is going to find out about Dexter at the end of Season 4 and that will set up the final season, Season 5.

  • YoMomma

I hope “guest star” appearances for a season doesn’t become a trend with this show but apparently it has. They need to put a “No Name” actor in place for another serial killer. That way they aren’t as likeable and feard more.

  • TimH

There should be a plastic surgeon serial killer so the actress who plays Rita can really show her acting chops. For example, she could surprise the serial killer by bursting her enormous saline bags into the killer’s face. I’d watch that.

  • dave h

I’d like to know how Rita was able to afford the boob job and the Botox treatments. Was she embezzling from the hotel?

  • dualperson

Hey Jay perhaps you need to read the article again “Dual” mean two “Duel” means prearranged fight. So in this case dual was totally correct, maybe it is you that should do some research before critiquing others!

  • minderbinder

Multiple comments about plastic surgery? Seriously? How can people even tell, she looks perfectly normal to me. I’m surprised at the negativity, this show has been one of the best on TV for all three seasons it has aired. I think the third season was even better than the second, if only because it didn’t have the annoying british girlfriend character.

  • minderbinder

dualperson, you need to read the comments better – the article originally said “duel” and was corrected after the comments pointed it out.

  • ihateausiello

I don’t understand all this ausiello crap, ausiello this, ausiello that. we only give a damn about the news and no one gives a damn about ugly bloggers. GTFO ausiello.

  • ILoveSHREK

I loved John Lithgow as the voice of Lord Farquaad in Shrek. Maybe I will start watching Dexter now.

  • DaveH

How can people even tell???? minderbinder, with all due respect, are you blind?

  • minderbinder

I’m serious, what is different? I didn’t notice a difference from the earlier seasons, and I never noticed her looking particularly “work done”.

  • Tim

LOVE IT! Lithgow is a great creepy guy (thinking of his role in the Brian DePalma/John Travolta movie “Blowout”) and having Carradine back is awesome. Season Two was my favorite (with Carradine), followed by One and then Three.
Let’s hope Season Four can recapture some of that earlier magic!

  • Dave H

Uhh … minderbinder. Her chest size has grown exponentially. Maybe they should show her new set of boobs in Braille so you can feel the difference.
