Blasphemous. Insane. Moronic. Re-freakin’-diculous. Those are just some of the colorful reactions that greeted today’s announcement that H’wood is planning to make a new Buffy movie without Joss Whedon (a.k.a. the worst idea in the history of civilization).
But one person has remained suspiciously silent throughout the escalating controversy: Whedon himself.
Until now, that is.
In an explosive Q&A conducted over e-mail, Whedon weighed in for the first time about the sure-to-be-hellacious Buffy reboot. What follows is a complete transcript of that interview…
What do you think about this Buffy movie they’re making without you?
JOSS WHEDON: I hope it’s cool.
Alright, so maybe I over-hyped our exchange a little bit. In my
defense, it’s all I could get out of him given the time constraints.
(Whedon’s crazy busy shooting the horror flick Cabin in the Woods and only had 10 seconds to spare.)
But while his words may have been brief, come on, the meaning behind
them was anything but. At the very least, his statement is open to all
kinds of interpretation. Is he taking the high road? Is he genuinely
hopeful it won’t suck? Is “cool” secret code for something else — like
“colossal failure,” perhaps? Post your theories below!

NOT pleased by a Buffy-verse sans Joss! Just don’t think anyone else can do it justice!
Totally an epic fail! WHY?!?
The first movie was B A D and the series was up and down. Why not get a new face in there (since Hollywood is locked into the remake/reboot mode). Maybe this will have good results (What did all the Trekkers say about JJ versus how good the result was?)
This thing won’t work. It can’t work. Not necessarily because Whedon is not on board, but because the “Scooby Gang” won’t be.
Is Hollywood really so much out of ideas that they have to do *this* and ruin the awesomeness that was 7 seasons of BtVS??
Yeah, one could maybe say the same thing about Star Trek. But that at least had JJ Abrams. And when I heard Zachary Quinto will play Spock, I thought “If they made the absolutely right decision when casting Spock, then I’m confident they’ve made the right decisions about everything else too”. And my feeling was right, the new Star Trek movie is great. With this Buffy thing though, I have no such great feeling, in fact, my feeling goes in the total opposite direction.
I… Whose idea was this? You’d think after all this time, people would realize *why* Buffy worked. (Joss Whedon.)
The anger may come later, but right now I’m just trying to get my mind around the stunning amounts of *stupid* that this is. Jeez.
Nuking the fridge pre-release
So we’re still waiting for officially official announcements by him.
I just hope these Kuzui guys DO contact him. Or else, they’re going to Quor’toth for their miserable intelligence. (Quor’toth! Ha! Got it? Like hel!! lol =B)
NOOOOO. a buffy without joss is no buffy i want to be apart of. And even worse, if they try to reboot the film the question remains WILL WE EVER GET ANOTHER JOSS SHOW IN THE BUFFYVERSE? i don’t want them to screw with the continuity of the show
The movie was campy fun, but it wasn’t awesome. Even the series was made better because of the other characters. And why the hell wasn’t Joss brought on? I hate this idea. I really, really hate it.
Buffy-verse sans Joss? Try a Buffy-verse sans BUFFYVERSE.
Good for Joss for taking the high road. This is so silly. I get it if the Kuzuis want to capitalize on the reboot trend but the idea of re-doing BtVS without any of the supporting characters despite such a rich cannon, is, at the very least, short sighted. Wouldn’t they want to introduce a new slayer to lessen the obligatory and most likely negative comparisons? The use of the name “Buffy” as the Vampire Slayer is to capitalize on the built in fan base. Except these are the same fans the Kuzuis are offending with the reimagining of the Buffyverse. Silly and not an economically wise idea.
I’ve been dying to see a Buffy movie made since the show ended (especially a Spike-centric one), but a Buffy movie without Joss Whedon or any of our beloved Buffy cast? Worst idea EVER. Who on earth is going to see this faux-Buffy movie? I can guarantee you die-hard Buffy fanatics will be staying far away. None of us want to see our favorite show destroyed by writers who have no clue what they’re doing. All we can do is hope this horrendous idea never makes makes it past the pitch.

He is not very hopeful and doesn’t care anyway.

You know ausiello, you could have stretched that out for many many more paragraphs – joss himself usually talks page after page of waffle when he is trying to (avoid) making a comment on something – so it would only be fitting if you did as well!
I’m kind of offended that they are even talking of making this movie. Without Buffy or Joss or anyone really, even one recast is too many. Where would it start? Is she in highschool again? will she lose all of her independence and edge to try and be the Hannah Montana (Not that there’s anything wrong with HM) of vampire slayers? I am against this.
Sorry. That was way too long.
“Cool”? Maybe. Taking a beloved franchise and stripping away all of the creative talent, actors, and characters that made it a success is risky. Might this be good? Yeah. It might. But I doubt it’ll be good. Hell, I doubt it’ll even get made.
It’s a little early for a re-boot, don’t you think? Are they trying for some kind of Star Trek style alternate timeline? Do the Kuzuis even own the rights to the TV characters other than Buffy and her Mom who weren’t in the original movie? Sounds like a bad idea all around.
This is so dumb and stupid and will get so much bad press that I can’t imagine it ever doing well; they should really rethink this now. I don’t understand why they can’t just make a vampire movie and NOT call it Buffy. The franchise IS the show…it’s like taking stale grape juice, slapping ‘Coke’ on it and expecting people to buy it.
This is the worst idea for a movie that I have ever heard, and that includes Battlefield Earth. I will not go to a Joss Whedon-less Buffy movie. It will not happen.
The movie will WITHOUT A DOUBT suck. I don’t want to see it. Nobody wants to see it. I hope the genious behind the remake idea will see that people all around the internet are offended by the idea.
Just to be clear: we surely want a new Buffy movie. That would be soooo great. But not at any cost.
Guess the studio that green-lighted this disaster-waiting-to-happen needed a tax write-off and quick. I’d rather wait for “Showgirls II”
Not seeing it. It isn’t Buffy without Joss and the cast or at least the characters…cast would be preferred though. I think with all this uproar it won’t happen anyway! Besides can they even call it Buffy doesn’t that belong to Joss?
What the hell is the plot going to be? It can’t be a prequel, because we already know how Buffy became the Slayer. It can’t be a sequel, because all the original actors are too old (Sarah is in her 30s, David B is 40 and looks to old to be Angel, etc.) Buffy is far too iconic to be played by a new actress (Granted, Sarah wasn’t the original, but she is the one who’s best known for the role). This is gonna suck so bad.
Oh God Please don’t!! Buffy is my favorite show EVER. These people are just going to mess it up. Without Whedon their is NO Buffy.
Oh, and Joss isn’t going to be involved. That makes it worse. Will any of the original writers be there? Marti Noxon? I kind of lost my patience with her in the last few seasons, but she was still involved.
Come on, Fran destroyed Joss’ vision the first time, why does she want to do it again? GET REAL. IF this does happen, I hope Kuzui loses a TON of money.
This is a very bad idea. If Fox wants to destroy their franchise and alienate the core audience for this property, then mission accomplished. It will be interesting to see if Fox will call our bluff and actually make this. Why make a movie that the core audience will refuse to see?
This has got to be one of the worst ideas I’ve heard in a really, really long time. It’s too stupid to even ask why. Are they trying to go after the lame Twilight audience? Wussiest vamps I’ve ever heard of. Bunnicula is more scary than the Twilight vamps, but I digress.
Whatever feverish brain thought this up (swine flu?) please stop. Stop right now. If you stop now, “No Harm, No Foul”. But if you keep going, you will go down in history as the owner of ultimate FAIL. See Howard the Duck, Ishtar and Battlefield Earth if you need references.
Instead of a Buffy movie, if they are going to stick to the the vampire slayer universe, I think a period movie that takes place in the 1800s, perhaps during the same time as Darla, Angel, etc. were terrorizing Europe. I mean, if Darla, Angel, Spike, and Drusilla were so bad, where was the Slayer? In Cleveland dealing with the Hellmouth there? It makes more sense that she’d be somewhere in Europe, given the time period.
I definitely don’t want them to try and do Buffy as a movie. Recasting would never get it right. Can you imagine anyone other than Alyson as Willow? Really?
Buffy is not Star Trek. Buffy is even more niche and cult-like — and much younger!
This is a slap in the face to Joss Whedon – who beautifully fleshed out a universe after the dismal one-off directed and produced by the Kuzuis – and to his fans.
If Joss isn’t behind it, it doesn’t count. It’s a cheaply-made Chinese knockoff – the ‘Vii’ to the Nintendo Wii, if you will.
