Exclusive: 'Without a Trace,' 'Privileged,' canceled, 'Gossip' spin-off DOA

Several major upfront-week developments to report:

* CBS has canceled Without A Trace and renewed Numb3rs. I’m told Eye execs had one slot left, and they went with Numb3rs because it’s less expensive to produce. CBS has also dropped Eleventh Hour and renewed How I Met Your Mother, Gary Unmarried, Rules of Engagement, and Old Christine.

* The CW will not be renewing Privileged for a second season. There was talk of a possible midseason berth for the much-loved dramedy, but, ultimately, the show was a casualty of the network’s strong development. "It’s truly heartbreaking," series creator Rina Mimoun said via e-mail. "I’m so grateful to everyone out there
who supported our little show and fell in love with Megan Smith. She
was the most delightful character I’ve ever had the pleasure to write
and watching JoAnna Garcia bring her to life every day was a gift I
will never forget. I’m incredibly proud of the work we did and forever
indebted to all the fans, critics and to Warner Bros. for being so
wonderful and supportive. I will miss this more than you know." Class act, that one.

*Among new shows, The CW has picked up Melrose Place 2.0, Beautiful Life, and Vampire Diaries. Oh, and the Gossip Girl spin-off is officially dead.

My Fall TV Cheat Sheet has been updated to reflect all of these developments.

upfront week, stay close to both my blog (the one you’re reading now!)

Yay for Numb3rs getting renewed for a 6th season. Thank you very much indeed CBS, awesome news!

  • Franko

WOW CW… Just WOW…Beautiful Life with Mischa Barton is IN, but they canceled the beautiful Privileged? WOW… I hope Beautiful Life sucks.

  • Yay

YAY the GG spinoff is dead! I can’t believe they wasted 75% of one episode of GG trying to set it up. What a waste of airtime.

  • Aushole

Well, with Charlie involved – I guess the Numb3rs added up to keep this great show.

  • K

Wonder why the GG spinoff wasn’t picked up…

  • Lorie

It was time for WOAT to go.

  • Don J

Not surprised about WAT. Once Cold Case got renewed, I know things were looking bad since there probably wasn’t room for both and both shows are produced by Warner Bros and not CBS.

    • Ann

i LOVE wITHOUT A TRACE AND TO HAVE IT CANCELLED FOR THE GARGAGE WE ARE GIVEN – UGH- SHOWS THAT ALL THE NETWORKS CARE ABOUT ARE THE KIDS AND THEY ARE NOT EVEN HOME WATCHING, BUT OUT PETYING

  • jj

Let me just start it. Oh no not Privelged and Without a Trace I’m never watching the CW or CBS again. Seriously though thank god they decided against the GG spinoff that was gonna be stupid.

  • CheekyMonkey

You know what CBS? SCREW YOU!!!! Take away my favorite TV show, you are a bunch of ungrateful maggots. Without a Trace saved the Tuesday 10pm death-slot and this is how you repay the fans, the cast and the crew? This betrayal will not be forgotten. Rot in hell.
CBS, you deserve to have your asses kicked by FOX. Spin it however you like, but FOX has beaten you this year and will do it again next year. Crowing about your “improved ratings” is a complete farce and makes you look like fools. FOX wins the demos, FOX wins the race. End of story.
You reap what you sow, CBS and now we all know what you stand for: Complete Bull-Sh!t.

    • bigswede

      hear,hear!!! My feelings exactly!!
      I like numbers……but I loved WOAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
      Jack was my kinda’ guy!!!!

    • CKahn

Thank you!! WOAT AND THE UNIT??!! WTH? Two quality shows for what? The Good Wife and some other BS? Only new show I’m excited for is NCIS: Los Angeles!

    • mary

I so agree I looked forward to WAT every wk for the last couple yrs Wish they asked the people what they wanted Thank God Cold Case just slipped in I heard You need someone new making your decisions as to what should stay and what should go!

    • Texan

I am in shock!!!! I cannot believe they cancelled “Without A Trace”!!!!!!!!! It was my favorite!

    • Holly Cloern

Totally agree!!! I LOVE WOAT! F-U CBS!

  • Glen

What is this one slot left news. What other CBS shows have been cancelled?

  • hello

CheekyMonkey, the networks doesn’t exist to serve you no matter what, they are a buisness and have to make decision from a buisness perspective. It serves no purpose renewing a show that looses them money

  • Megs

Judge me all you want, but the fact that Kelly Rutherford obviously doesn’t have blue eyes really REALLY bothered me.
And as much as I love the 80’s… okay, that’s a lie. I’ve never loved the 80’s. Which is why I refuse to hop on the neon bandwagon. Good riddance GG spin off!

  • FarleyC

I’m stunned that Without A Trace has been cancelled. I’ve watched it from the very beginning. I never miss it. HUGE bummer. I’ve watched MAYBE 10 Cold Case episodes over the years. heavy sigh….

    • Marion Bauman

I’m very disappointed to hear that Without a trace has been cancelled. Perhaps if CBS hadn’t kept shifting the time around people would continue watching it.

    • Betty Jo MorgaN

I cannot believe you have cancelled the Unit and Without a Trace and renewed garbage like 2 1/2 Men, Big Bang Theory, Gary Unmarried and How I Met Your Mother. What a joke. You have no class and no appreciation for good acting and plots with substance.

  • cameron

i really hate cbs. the only good shows they have left are the csi’s. they keep killing all the good ones. FOX IS WAY BETTER!!!

  • Adrienne

I think it’s disgusting how CBS has treated Without a Trace the last few years. No wonder it hasn’t survived because people can’t find it. Although after reading the chatter I knew it’s fate was inevitable I just wish they could have given it at least 13 episodes to finish off any storylines. Let’s hope tonight’s finale will be a good one. RIP :(

  • Caio

CW is going bankrupt. Seriously… Maybe not everyone liked Valley Girls, but it was pretty obvious it could be a great show, at least in its genre ( teen shows ). Waaay better than GG. But no, they go with A) Crappy 90`s remake ( we all know how that worked out with 90210 )
    B) Twilight Rip Off
    C) Crappy Models show with Mischa Barton
    Nice one, CW ;D

  • KatieNix

I didn’t realize how close Numb3rs was to getting the axe. I had read an interview with Rob Morrow and he said that they were “golden”.

  • Marnie

Ok this week sucks no Samantha Who? or WAT. I hope they havesome good new shoes because ive lost all faith in network tv.

  • M-Dog

Thank G-O-D-D that the GG Spin-Off is dead. That had to be one of the worst ideas out there. Too bad for Privileged, really bright and interesting show. Wish people would stop with all the remakes and take a chance on new and interesting shows.

  • Jean

I’m so sad WAT is canceled. I really enjoy watching the show, even though at times, it got too soap opera’ish with the whole Sam & Jack love storyline. The cases are interesting & the cast really work well together.
I also watch CC & although I also enjoy the show, it’s not one of my favorites. I wonder if another network will pick up WAT?

  • Debbie

CBS you seriously need to find a spot for Back on your schedule even if it is at mid seasaon. You know some of those new shows are going to tank you need to have something to replace them with that is going to be worth watching!!!!!!!!!!!

  • DennyWilson

Honestly, was NUMB3RS EVER at risk? It’s a CBS-P Television owned show affordabily to produce and about to go into syndication in the fall.

  • Benj

I loved that GOSSIP GIRL episode. Dammit, as an old GUIDING LIGHT fan, I want my Brittany Snow-Cynthia Watros fix!

  • Donna

If I had to pick between the two, I’d have picked Numbers too. Just sad that they’re just leaving “Without a Trace” without an end.

  • rockgolf

I still say CBS should have merged “Without A Trace” and “Cold Case” into a single program called “Without A Case”. It would feature the cast of both shows waiting around the office for someone to call in with a job for them. Highlights of the pilot episode include Jack asking if anyone else wants a coffee while he’s out.

  • Sara

eff. I was looking forward to the eighties kitch of the GG spinoff (and the VM alums)

  • rkor

As long as Privileged is released on DVD, with a featurette about the plans for a second season, I am ok with the news.

  • BigJames

Sucks about Privileged my wife and I enjoyed that show a lot corky and cute. Good to hear about Numb3rs now if they only don’t screw it up we should see a wedding next year.

  • WingsStef

I have to say, Numb3rs being renewed makes my day. My apologizes to Without a Trace fans however. I have no hate for that show.

  • Mariah

Ciao, how hysterical you’re calling Vampire Diaries a Twilight rip-off considering the books it’s based on were written a more than a decade before Stephanie Meyer published her novel.
