'Grey's' exclusive: Katherine Heigl reenters Emmy race!

Categories: Grey's Anatomy

Katherineheigl_lLadies and gentlemen, Katherine Heigl has just declared game on!

After a firestorm of controversy erupted around her decision to remove herself from Emmy consideration last go-’round, the Grey’s Anatomy heroine has reentered the gold derby this year, sources confirm to me exclusively.

Natch, cynics will snark that the 2007 Best Supporting Actress winner is back in the race because of the tensions that allegedly sprung up between her and series creator Shonda Rhimes after she took herself out of the running. (The movie starlet, you’ll recall, said at the time that she didn’t have material with which she could compete.) But I think — and I think you’ll agree — it’s likelier that even she knows that, whether viewers loved or loathed the Izzie’s-got-a-brain-tumor story, she played the frak out of it. She’s already earned one high profile endorsement…

“I think she did beautiful work,” Rhimes raved Thursday immediately following the season finale. “I think she always does beautiful work.”

Plus, if it turns out that Izzie did, in fact, take the Seattle Grace elevator straight to heaven, another Emmy would make a lovely parting gift, no?

So what do you think? Is Heigl just keeping the peace at work, or is she out to claim the statuette that, correct me if I’m wrong, is hers to lose? And what of her entry again in the supporting race? Should she have rolled the dice and bumped herself up to lead? Much to discuss, but no worries — “below” is a bottomless pit into which you can deposit your comments!

I think her time has come. It’s time for her to leave the show.

  • Charstin

Can’t help but wonder if, because of backlash, she won’t win anyway.

  • GaryJr

I’ll say good for her before the avalanche of negative Nancys chime in with their death threats and condemnation.

  • Kell

Hope she wins, she has been fantastic and would deserve it.

  • PJ

Well….I think everyone overreacted to her pulling herself out of the Emmy run last year. She didn’t have a good storyline last season and kudo’s to her to recognize that she didn’t have anything worthy of the award. Give her a break already!
Now this season, not only has she had the material and delivered Emmy worthy performances, but many of her cast members have as well, especially Chandra Wilson!!

  • Tiki

As much as the whole thing annoyed me last year, I too agree that she played the heck out of this story line and I think she knows it.

  • LA

    Meh.
    Christina Hendricks deserves that Emmy.

  • Adam

No way she was the best this year. They’ll get an nod..but won’t win.

I think Heigl is an amazing actress and people made such a big deal about the whole thing last year. She was right not to enter because she didn’t have a story. As for the show, I hope she doesn’t leave it, I think there is so much more for her character to do

  • lisa

Kathryn Heigl has done a great job with her storyline but she has plenty of competition from the GA Cast! Sandra Oh has been delivering brilliant performances all season and so has Chandra Wilson! Yes, she should get nominated but Sandra and Chandra deserve the emmy more!

  • Aaron

Excellent! She has been absolutely amazing this season. Lets face it her storyline is much more compelling this year than it was last. Cancer v dead deer. It is a no brainer.

  • holy smokes

Seriously, can we have TV scoop not gossip? This isn’t a hair salon, who the %@$# cares about who wins an Emmy? No one! How about you give scoop on all shows not just the ones you like! Most of your shows are gay anyway no one watches the CW and yet you have most scoop on them. Wake up from your own fantasy world.

If we really think about it, KH wasn’t given Emmy-worthy material. Season three/Season four Izzie was poorly written, and while yes, I’m sure it was insulting to the writers, if she truly didn’t think she should be in the running, then I have to agree with her.
And say what you want about KH, but she really pulled off this Izzie/Denny/cancer storyline beautifully, which couldn’t have been easy to do, considering how crazy it was at times.
I’m not saying what she did/said was right, but from a strictly acting/material standpoint, it was her entitled opinion and her choice.

  • teri

Kathryn has done a good job with her storyline but I don’t see her as an amazing actress! Sandra Oh is so far superior in her acting ability! Sandra is actor’s actor!!!

  • please no

Katherine Heigl doesn’t deserve an Emmy nomination. She deserves the unemployment line.

  • Angel

Go Katherin Heigl! You go girl! You deserve to win that Emmy! I just hope her character is still around (and alive) next season!

  • Maxine

The press make way more out of these stories than is actually true. The fact that thousands of other actors don’t submit either was overlooked because she was a big name and the previous winner. It is and always has been a personal choice for the actors. She didnt feel she had the material and I think if the critics and writers look back at their own comments about last season (dead deer anyone?) they would be hypocritical not to agree with her. The trouble is Heigl is too honest for her own good and when the LA Times asked her why she hadnt submitted she told it as she saw it. In hindsight she probably wished she would have chosen slightly different words I would imagine. Regardless, she has been incredible this year. I think the episode with Izzie’s mother was phenomenal. Hope she wins it would be richly deserved.

  • kab

i think ellen pompeo’s “oh god, oh god” when she figures out who john doe is deserves an emmy.
maybe katie deserves to be nominated, maybe even a chance at winning, but i sure wish she’d be less controversial about it. it alienates people.

  • Andy

Great news. I adore Katherine and think she is a breath of fresh air. She lights up the screen and she has portrayed a really difficult storyline for Izzie perfectly. Hopefully she will get recognised for her work with a nomination at least.

  • WoW

I think she was right to remove herself from the race last year because the material she was given was subpar (remember her operating on a damn deer in the parking lot?) That being said, it was the fact that she publicly stated she wasn’t given good enough material (true, but still it was a major call out to the writers) that garnered so much unfavorable press. I think she’ll get nominated (and I’m fine with that) but I don’t think she’ll win.

  • Rowan

I think her performance deserves an Emmy. I also think that she has learned her lesson that she needs to think before she speaks and not bite the hand that feeds her. Her film career is not taking off like she has hoped (frankly, I would change agents because her last couple of movies were poor choices), and she seems to understand that Greys gives her solid writing to work with.
People need to move past comments and issues she and Shonda had way back and just move forward.

  • Debra

Good for her—with her absolutely brilliant portrayal of Izzie’s story this year, she more than deserves a spot in the race, and I will be cheering her on. Katherine reinvented her character this year, and while I credit in part the writing on the page for being back up to the strength it lost post S3, she took the material to new heights of greatness.
And I’m a fan of hers who NEVER faulted her for her decision the previous year. The Emmy race? Not always a fair fight. Often it seems people will vote for a name, not necessarily material from that specific year—and I think she withdrew to be sure she wasn’t nominated for work she wasn’t as proud of as something like, say, the stellar work she did this year. Calling the writers out on weak writing? As one who ADORES this show for its strength? I agree. S4 was weak. Shonda says she was burnt out–she’s human, that’s okay. But it paved the way for something so much better. The ante was upped this season. The results? Award worthy!

  • Pender

Not sure I agree with you Rowan. Her movies have done much better than expected. She is now the fifth highest paid movie actress in the world. How is that not taking off? Seems like she is doing pretty well for herself.

  • Bren

she got what she wanted at the expense of the rest of the cast that DOESN’T attack the writers of her show. Shonda rhimes giving into KH’s diva demands is sick. they deserve each other. The way to get a storyline on Greys antaomy is to stick it to the writers, who would have thought.

  • Anna

Having sex with a ghost gets you an Emmy? WTF

  • Erin

No way. It’s Chandra Wilson’s year! Or even Ellen Pompeo. Heigl just doesn’t deserve it this year. Sorry.

  • Angie

I’m probably one of the 3 people who agreed with Heigl last year. She didn’t have material worthy of an Emmy. Izzie spent all of season 4 floundering about doing nothing.
This year her character had material which only very talented actors could pull off.
And for the love of God. It’s not ‘ghost sex’ if he wasn’t a freakin’ ghost, but a hallucination.

  • brady

Sandra Oh’s acting on GA this season has been consistently outstanding and better than KH’s. It would be a travesty if she gets an Emmy and not Sandra Oh. KH was in bed for most of the season anyway, sleeping with a ghost most of the first half and then in the hospital with cancer most of the second half.

  • Mel

Good for her. She does have the material for at least an Emmy nomination. She can enter in the 100th episode or any of the cancer episode.
@Bren – I recommend looking up past quotes from T.R. Knight, Ellen Pompeo, Sara Ramirez, and Patrick Dempsey that criticized the writing. In the end the cast was right, and the show is getting praise yet again. Don’t only center on KH when in fact it was majority of the cast that didn’t like the writing.
