Scoop: Fox renews 'Lie to Me,' installs 'Shield' creator as new showrunner

This is the God’s honest truth: Lie to Me is coming back for another season.

A Fox rep wouldn’t comment, but reliable sources confirm that the network has renewed the freshman drama for a 13-episode second season. And here’s where things get really interesting: Shawn Ryan, the genius producer-writer behind The Shield and The Unit, is taking over as showrunner. Don’t interpret that to mean The Unit is dead though. I’m told if the CBS procedural returns — and it very well may — Ryan will juggle both shows.

Additionally, Fox has picked up two new shows: the comedy Sons of Tucson starring Reaper’s Tyler Labine and the DC comic adaptation Human Target starring Mark Valley.

The net will announce its full schedule next Monday. Now excuse me while I go update my Fall TV Cheat Sheet!

Oh great one! What does this mean for Dollhouse? SOB!

  • A.D.

The American Idol Network aka FOX, renews another boring show yet strong, creative, unique shows like Dollhouse and Terminator probably won’t be renewed and will fall along the wayside like the other Fantastic shows they dumped on Friday…Firefly, Boston Public, Fastlane, Dark Angel, etc…Can’t stand FOX!

  • XK

Well, I do like the show. Although it wasn’t on my list of shows to obsess over, my wife and I watched it every week. So… that’s good. Unfortunately, the two shows I really want Fox to renew are Terminator and Dollhouse, both of which seem like utter goners.

  • Joey Connick

Does that mean it’s ONLY going to be a 13-episode season or that they will make a decision on the back 9 later on?

  • I_Love_Tim_Roth!

I am so excited!! I love Lie to Me and I love Tim Roth so I’m totally happy by this news!

  • Don Jariyasunant

That’s really weird that they hired Ryan as showrunner. But, I don’t blame him since The Unit is on the bubble and he needs a steady job.

  • CandyMaize

Like XK, the 2 FOX shows that I am most interested in are ‘TTSCC’ and ‘Dollhouse’ (renewal would be really nice). And regarding ‘The Unit’ .. I’ve watched since it premiered and I’ve never missed an episode, so I really hope that CBS decides to renew it!

  • Raquel

Yeahhhhhh, so happy!!!! Love ‘Lie To Me’ !! Can’t wait!

  • AO

I’ve never seen Lie To Me, but congratulations to the fans of this show.
Hopefully there will be more renewal notices soon.

  • Kate

I’m a Tim Roth fan so I’m thrilled. Kelli Williams has done a great job. I could stand to see some improvement in overall execution but the potential is high and the actors have plenty of ability. I think having Shawn Ryan involved will make it a little less stilted. It has strong moments but needs consistency. For a first season, it did a good job and there’s a lot of room for growth.

  • moxie

Michael, with only a 13 ep pick up, what are the chances that this is to make room for a limited run of Dollhouse? @ElizaPatricia wrote that Mutant Enemy was in talks today with Fox so the timing sounds right to me…

  • Kate

    @Kate:
“I think having Shawn Ryan involved will make it a little less stilted… For a first season, it did a good job and there’s a lot of room for growth.”
    – I’m actually not familiar with his work, but if he does bring improvements, then I’m all for it! :)
As for doing a good job the first season: I couldn’t agree more. Glad that it’s been renewed, and I hope they’ll pick up more episodes in the future. Hopefully the show will gain some more viewers this summer.

Cool. This is a good show based on a fascinating concept, but it does has it’s problems and could definately benefit from some revamping. Besides, I’ve always loved Tim Roth, and look forward to lusting after him for at least another 13 episodes. Yow!

  • Boob

oh shut up about LTM being another boring show that Fox renews. If people watched TSCC than it would be renewed. and if it doesn’t get renewed its because its a boring show no one watches. Same with Dollhouse. How is LTM not a strong creative show? Go home and cry me a river.

  • DanOregon

I never got the vibe that Ryan was that involved with The Unit. I like Lie To Me, I think its more interesting and more clever than The Mentalist.
I do think Ryan will give LTM’s characters a kick in the butt instead of relying on the premise of the show to keep things bubbling.

Tyler told End Of Show: “I don’t know what the CW was expecting taking a show off the air for ten months and then placing it against “idol” with no promotion but they were “disappointed” with our ratings to say the least. We drooped [sic] into obscurity.”
    http://www.endofshow.com/2009/05/13/breaking-fox-picks-up-sons-of-tucson-reaper-officially-over/
If that’s what they told Tyler, then how on Earth is the CW taken seriously by the industry? Reaper’s live numbers have been beating 90210 almost since the show came back, and Privileged’s numbers are even worse. Yet Privileged is considered by the CW to be successful enough for a midseason pickup, yet Reaper’s considered a disappointment?
I’ll wait for the CW upfronts next week on May 21st. Personally, I’m hoping for a summer pickup, which would probably let Tyler do both shows. Reaper fans: Remember, last year Reaper was declared dead too, but came back at the last minute to get a renewal. If anyone wants to still help, snail and email addresses, petitions, etc., are organized here: http://community.livejournal.com/reaperdmv/37449.html

Never watched this because I am not into procedurals, but if Shawn Ryan is at the helm I will give it a go. The man gave me my second favourite show of all time with The Shield so I feel I owe it to him to watch whatever his name is on.

  • cj1013

Yeah!! I’m thrilled Lie to Me was renewed. Hoping to get more than 13 episodes but I’ll take what I can get. This cast has mega chemistry. Lie to Me and Castle are my new obsessions!

  • Lexi

OMG I LOVE LIE TO ME!!!! I’M SO HAPPY!!!!!!!!

  • Ronaldo

    Callian(Cal/Gillian) FTW!

  • Nina The Hot Demon

So I guess Labine getting an awful-sounding pilot means Reaper is officially dead, then? Goddamnit, CW. That was the only entertaining show you had.

  • chattypatra

Yes! We love to watch Lie To Me and now it will only get better. I truly do hope that CBS keeps The Unit; it is a very good show.
I’m still sad about Terminator, though. That last episode was so amazingly great…how sad not to have the show for another season. I think that if the movie is a blockbuster this Summer, Fox will regret its decision to cancel the show.

  • Tim

Frankly, they should can all of those shows and give Dollhouse an actual fair chance (and TSSC another 13 eps in a decent time slot).

  • m

Tim Roth has carried Lie To Me through the first season, i would like to see better writing in next season.
At least the show will get a fair chance.

  • matt

Lie to Me is a pretty good show–that’s actually gotten better as its gone along this season. I was not really crazy about that first episode but subsequent eps have picked up the interest level considerably and despite it being on against both Old Christine (which i love) and Scrubs/Better Off Ted…i’ve still made sure to either dvr it or watch it online within the next day or two each week its aired.
I think the 13 ep order is because the show has faltered somewhat since fox moved it before American Idol and they want to make sure that it could still draw in an audience of some kind in the fall with no american idol around to boost its ratings at all. Honestly i think it will–its a solid proceedural and alongside both Bones and House FOX is gettin’ good at these. (hell you could even count Fringe and Dollhouse in the loosest sense as proceedurals)
i’m happy to have it back–and i hope they keep up the interest level in the fall. (you know delving into Tim Roth’s backround)

  • Stewie

I think it’s unrealistic to imagine that Ryan will stay as showrunner on The Unit while running Lie to Me. It’s a strong signal that he doesn’t expect The Unit to be renewed.

  • Adam

One of the few good new shows on TV today. It’s great to see it succeed despite its tough competition.

Fox finally does something right…mark this day on your calendar! With the demise of TSCC and the the probability that Dollhouse will not see another season, it has a few quality shows that it can turn to and beef up for the fall season. This is one of them. I can’t believe that I am going to say this but smart move – well done Fox.

  • Sara

Good! I actually like Lie to Me better than The Mentalist – it’s interesting how the show actually spotlights the lie indicators that the person flashes. That’s not to say it didn’t need some work – I saw last week’s “long con” coming a mile away – but I watch it every week.
