WARNING: Stop reading if you have not watched last night’s episode of House. I mean it. Everyone else, onward and downward…
Deep breaths, Huddy fans. Deep breaths.
Among the many bombshells dropped in Monday’s House season finale was the discovery that last week’s massively hyped-by-me hookup between House and Cuddy, um, Never. Actually. Happened.
Deeeeeeep breaths.
It was nothing more than a figment of House’s Vicodin-soaked, Kutner-grievin’, Amber-obsessed imagination.
Deeeeeeeeeeeeeep breaths.
Feeling a little duped, eh? Join the club. Much like you, I figured there’d be a twist, but I honestly didn’t think it would be of the hallucinatory variety. (I was only recently tipped off about this development, hence the vague warning I included in Ask Ausiello.) Of course, looking back, the signs were there. Series creator David Shore was always very careful to qualify his comments about Huddysex. Take a look:
"Yes, we have figured out the details surrounding Huddy having sex," Shore told us last January, before adding, "It definitely won’t be what people expect. We have to do things our way, the House way. We wouldn’t want to have the characters do anything out of character."
Two months later, Shore was equally as cagey about the impending romp. "I really don’t want to go into the particulars of [them hooking up] because we have found a really cool way to do it, and I don’t want to spoil it. But I will confirm that we are taking things forward [with them]."
Bottom line: Technically, Shore didn’t lie. But he was playing me us a little. (BTW, both Shore and exec producer Katie Jacobs declined to be interviewed for this story.)
Other major developments in last night’s finale and the questions they raised:
• Chase and Cameron got hitched! Will it last? Will it lead to more screen time for the underused docs next season? Will Jesse Spencer make good on his (presumably tongue-in-cheek) threat to walk? (Nope to that last one; a rep for the actor confirms he’ll be back next season as a series regular.)
• Kutner came back to life… in House’s head! Did Obama have to sign off on the cameo?
• As we suspected, a downward spiraling House checked into a psychiatric/rehab facility! How long will he stay there? Might he bump into Wilson’s brother while he’s there? Will he pass the time by having more imaginary sex with Cuddy?
So many questions, so much time to ponder them in the comments section below (four months to be exact.) And while you’re down there, tell me what you thought of the finale. Love it? Hate it? Out for blood? Start spillin’!

i think i’m going to die
I can’t say I saw this coming.. at all.
The episode was crazy. We all need to check in the clinic with House after this. Good though, very unexpected.
thank you god whom i don’t believe in!
and here i was ready to stop watching after this season…phew, guess i can put that idea aside for now.
seriously, house checking into the nut house seems much more realistic than that “i always wanna kiss you” stuff which to me always seemed like something that guy would never say. TO ANYONE except maybe his mirror.
OMGGGGG THAT WAS
…dmksdjklasjddjasdjlskdj
i’m so confused… is Kutner dead?
YAY!!! IT WAS’NT REAL!!! SO HAPPY GONNA DIE!!! YAY!!!
See, now I was bummed the sex was fake. And the “It was all a dream” was used before in season 2.
That said? This was an awesome season finale, and I was literally saying “Oh my God” for the last 10 minutes there. Fantastic ending, can’t wait to see what they do next season.
I’ m out for blood. I’m calling a hit right now. Goddammit.
Oh, thank god. At least it’s not (as I suspected after seeing the episode and not any media covering it) a series finale. House isn’t allowed to end. I was so scared for a minute. So scared.
I don’t even know what to say. I’m pissed. And not just because of the House/Cuddy thing being destroyed.
I can’t stop crying!!!
“BTW, both Shore and exec producer Katie Jacobs declined to be interviewed for this story”
A*SHOLES!
OMG! I am absolutely shocked by that episode! i may be one of few but i think it was amazingly done. Congrats and thank you to everyone involved for an amazing season!
hallucinations…gotta love em!!!
on the other hand (and i can’t believe i’m gonna say this as a house/wilson kinda fan) i think shore is a bit cowardly with that. just decide on a couple you want to pursue and do it. hallucinations are just another way to keep every door open.
anyway, still love the fact that it was all in his head. yeah!
thanks a lot for the explanation! i’m sure everyone was confused with tonight’s episode! you sure cleared up things for me
Wow. The show is still so hot. Specially Olivia Wilde: http://www.actressscene.com/search/label/Olivia%20Wilde
I’m so sad about the way it turned around, but have hope still, the concern on Cuddy’s face, at the wedding. Damn you awesome writers!!!
good finale to a terrible season. didn’t really make up for the 23 crappy episodes before this one, but still good. house and cuddy…what a terrible couple.
AHHH HOW COULD THEY DO THAT TO US??
can’t he not practice medicine anymore??
AND WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU THINKING CAMERON??? WHYY??
terrible (but good) finale!
Well, while I “knew” – call it female intuition, whatever – House was going crazy and Huddy was nothing more than a bad halluzination (a really bad one, one that shouldn’t be repeated, because it’s too nauseating), I’m shocked they actually forced that wedding upon us. I love Cameron, she’s my favorite, and I really like Chase – but as a couple?! NO thanks! And now that?! I doubt it will last more than a couple of episodes but still it’s cruel towards Jennifer and Jesse that they went this far for nothing. It’s not like it’s important to them working as doctors – which is what their job in this show should be.
Actually, this season’s finale is the most disappointing ever, but then again this entire season was rather disappointing. I kept asking myself what happened to my most favorite show ever… Please, writers, re-watch the first seasons, those were so brilliant, I still hope and pray for season 6 to be at least almost as good as the first three were.
KUTNER!!!!!!!
Wasn’t someone supposed to die?
I’m glad House didn’t sleep with Cuddy. Personally, I’m tired of the soap opera storylines — get back to medicine, dammit! Another thing — administrators do NOT dress like hookers in low cut sweaters and skin-tight skirts. Someone needs to dress Cuddy like a real doctor/administrator.
While there was a lot to love in this episode from a Huddy perspective, we got to see it’s what House really wants, I still feel totally screwed over. I’m sure DS is laughing his ass off but I hate it when TPTB treat fans with contempt and I feel like that’s what happened here on a couple of fronts. I honestly don’t know if I’ll be back next year.
i wonder what the addition of kutner appearing in his hallucinations meant. the guilt he felt about kutner manifested itself as amber; the withdrawl and cuddy hallucination was the story his mind invented for himself; was house suicidal?
I thought that that was the most unrealistic detox I’d ever seen considering how addicted House is. Will be interesting to see what happens next season.
I’m so upset right now !!! I was so pulling for Huddy.. this sux =( they played us for a fool …..
I am VERY HAPPY about the Chase and Cameron wedding!! I do like these two together.
WHAT THE FU#@@###KKKKKKKK!!!
how could they turn all the touching and nice scenes from last week into a friggin hallucination?????
OK, so did he or did he not make love to Cuddy??? I think it was a perfect ending for him to realize he needed treatment……was the love scene really only his imagination??
This is harsh! This was way freakin’ harsh. What has this show done to me.
I knew it from the moment House woke up alone. I knew it from the moment that Cuddy never really acknowledge the fact that they slept together. Something was off the whole episode and I had myself set up for doom. Still doesn’t make it any easier than seeing that doom become a reality.
I hope they are ready to give us a great season 6. Very intrigued by where they go with this storyline. I will admit that I was also interested to see where they would have taken the Cuddy/House relationship if this bold sex move would have been real.
Heart is breaking for House though. Hugh you are the shiz-nit. Unbelievable. How you haven’t won an Emmy yet is beyond me. You’ve definately proven over the past several episodes that your time has come.
