Spoiler Alert: 'Heroes' resurrects 'Carnivale'

Wanna know what Season 4 of Heroes is gonna be like?

Go back and watch Carnivàle.

Based on the casting breakdowns that are making the rounds in Hollywood, it seems safe to say that the creatively resurgent NBC drama’s new volume, "Redemption," will bear more than a passing resemblance to the much-missed HBO show.

Besides a Knife Thrower and a sexy, twentysomething Tattoo Girl, Heroes is on the hunt for a middle-aged Eddie Izzard type to play the Carnival Barker, a smooth operator with a wicked wit. This character, I hear, will start small and grow. (Not grow as in grow-into-World’s-Tallest-Man grow, but grow nonetheless.)

In addition, the series is searching for its own Ellen Page to play Claire’s (Hayden Panettiere) quirky college roommate, and a stalwart — think Andre Braugher — for the role of Matt’s (Greg Grunberg) partner… and mentor.

Sound good to you? Or at least better than this season of Heroes? Or does it just annoy you that somebody is doing Carnivàle other than, er, Carnivàle? (My opinion? Yes, yes, and a little.) Sound off below! (Additional reporting by Andy Patrick)

I’ve never seen Carnivale, but I love Heroes.
So far the Knife Thrower sounds the best. Will his/her power be perfect accuracy or something? Or can he change his body parts into knives?
Claire’s roommate has potential too, as long as they don’t go out of the way to make her too quirky.

That only makes me miss Carnivale more. Boy do I miss that show. One of the best ever. Sigh. A sad sigh.

  • Alicia Gray

Never saw the show. Kinda of skeptical about a carnival angle though. Not liking it.

    Wtf….
I have a bad feeling about this.

Concept doesn’t matter – its the writing which does, and unless they replace the team its going to more of the same old same old zzzzzz

  • Doris

I’d love it if they added Patrick Bauchau, who was my favorite Carnivale actor (love that voice).

  • Kate

If they could do it with a nod to Carnivale, that would be great. I.E., they are fond of everyone being related, why not trace some families to a traveling circus in the 1920s or a religious commune that came to a tragic end. The traveling circus tracing from a young man and the religious commune from a young woman who might have been the Antichrist, and it is clear the young man care for her but killed her and he might just have been an angel.

    gawd i miss carnivale…

Well since every season of heros the plots are rip off from other show ie: 4400, xmen it really should make a difference. I watch the show when the writes actually come up with an original idea

I loved Carnivale, and was so sad it went off the air :-( Particularly on one of the biggest cliffhangers ever (and HBO actually said that it had ended with proper closure, whatever!) I was hoping you’d say Clancy Brown would be showing up – now that would be awesome! In fact, he should be the new baddie, maybe take Sylar under his wing or something. I am skeptical as to how long they can keep up the Sylar/Nathan thing – it seems they’ll have to get rid of Nathan eventually, but I doubt they’ll want to. They should have killed off Mohinder instead.

this show has become a total waste of talent. just release the worthwhile people from their contracts and let this mess die the quick painless death it deserves.

  • Denise Osborne

Carnivale was one of the best shows ever. Bring it back!

  • Heather

I never really got into Carnivale, but I do have to say that Eddie Izzard would be a great person to cast for the Eddie Izzard type. I mean, did anyone besides my hubby and me watch the Riches? Eddie was great!!

  • lorry

It’s such a waste. So much talent in the show and the cast – well, most of them – are just so sweet. I just don’t what they’re taking in that writing room. Maybe they got the brown acid?

  • lorry

one more thing regarding ripoffs. Hiro gets a nosebleed. come on.

Just put this show to bed and give us the best NBC show going. Chuck.
If NBC would spend half the time promoting Chuck as it does this lifeless show, Chuck would be better off and it would be renewed.

There’s a reason why I stopped watching this show since last season… more and more this show is just a rip off of other better storylines (watchmen, xmen, carnivale, etc)

I’m very torn because I really want to like Heroes and I watch it faithfully. But they just don’t seem to know where they’re going lately. Almost every major storyline they’ve done in recent years can be traced to some classic comic book plot.
I’m still rooting for it but it also seems like the writers are taking great pains to keep the heroes from doing anything that’s actually heroic. Most of what they do is self-preservation. I’m not advocating them formally organizing a league of heroes but even occasionally throwing a bone to the mortals in their world would be nice.

Hopefully it suffers the same fate as Carnivale…the Ax!

Heroes doing Carnivale is like the Three Stooges doing Shakespeare. Not good, but you guys still might want to tune in for the trainwreck. I won’t.

  • Kelly

If it’s at all like Carnivàle, I might keep watching Heroes next season. Now, I’m off to watch my Carnivàle DVDs…

  • your advice …

To go back and watch Carnivale? Better than watching Heroes for a long time now.

I keep hoping “Heroes” will get back to its former glory, as “Lost” has, but so far, no good. Sylar was always my least favorite character; not because he’s a villain, but because he’s such a pointless I-kill-only-because-I-like-it villain. That bores the hell out of me. (like “Angelus” on “Buffy”/”Angel”) I like villains who have an agenda (usually an insane one), like “Khan” in the second Trek movie. Speaking of Trek movies, the new one was a bit damaged by Quinto sounding exactly like Sylar, though he got Nimoy’s physical affectations down perfectly. The Uhura thing was hot, IMO. I hope Quinto develops a voice that’s distinctly different for young Spock, despite his obvious lateral lisp. I enjoyed the film overall, especially Chris Pine’s performance.

Hereos is a great show. I think whatever they do is going to rock. Vol. 3 was a bit off, but Vol 4 was awesome!! i think that taking the show in diff directions is fun and creative. But, I also think that they need to do like Lost and give us a series end date so that the show can have a creative ending!

  • Dominique

I have no interest in Heroes anymore. They killed off Adam, they killed off Elle, they killed off Daphne, but the whiny bitchy brat Claire is still alive and the main focus of this show. All they do is add newbies to the cast. The show better be over soon.

  • Steph

so just get Eddie Izzard, seriously you want to make the show awesome again…

  • Snarf

I’ll watch, I’ll cringe, I’ll wonder why the hell I’m still watching.

  • dave

The problem with Heroes lately is that there are too many characters on the show. Having a lot of characters isn’t necessarily a bad thing (take LOST for instance, which has a huge cast, but the writers know how to balance the characters well, so it works). But the writers/producers of Heroes do not know how to balance the characters well. The cast is already big and bloated, certain characters are given lame storylines, and new characters keep getting thrown into the mix.
