Exclusive: Bloody good 'Dexter' spoilers!

Categories: Dexter

Dexter_lApologies in advance for perpetuating an overused pun, but Dexter’s fourth season sounds, well, killer.

When the Showtime hit returns next fall, six months will have lapsed on screen, leaving newlyweds Dexter (Michael C. Hall) and Rita (Julie Benz) the proud parents of a baby boy. “This season, we’re going to deal with: Can a serial killer juggle a personal life, work, and his ‘dark passenger’?” reveals executive producer Sara Colleton. “In other words, can Dexter have it all? Which is something all of us grapple with every day of our lives. So we’re taking something that is a very human dilemma and putting it through the prism of Dexter’s special needs.”

Further complicating Dexter’s intricate balancing act will be a new, as-yet-uncast male
antagonist who will “cross paths with Dexter in a major, dramatic way,”
teases Colleton. “He will illuminate a lot about Dexter’s life and
force him to make some tough choices.” (Word is they’re looking for a
“Jeff Daniels-type” to play the role.)

Meanwhile, Dex’s plucky sister, Deb (played by Hall’s real-life wife,
Jennifer Carpenter), will unwittingly threaten to shed light on his
dark secret. “All the way through the season, Deb — in her need to know her father more — is going to get closer and closer to figuring out who Dexter’s mother was and her relationship with her father,” says
Colleton. So might the day come when Dex is forced to slice and dice
her? “That is inconceivable to me,” declares Colleton. “Deb and Dexter
are the best brother-and-sister team ever.” One could even call
them…killer. (Sorry again!)

wow, sounds like an interesting season ahead!

  • house addict

    Sounds awesome! Can’t wait!

  • UltimateNicheDirectory.com

Now I have Dexter fever again. And they’re married?! Whoa!

  • tbranan

Looking for a “Jeff Daniels-type?” How about….Jeff Daniels??!! The guy doesn’t work near enough and he is good in every thing he does. Call him!!

  • Kate Kobra

Sounds like much of the same, but I’m sure it will be far better than what else is offered on tv. The horrible actress who plays Deb, is his real life wife…yikes! She is the only thing I don’t like about the show, although each season she grows on me a little more.

  • Adam

I’m still waiting for Season 3 on DVD to catch up! Can’t wait.

KateKobra: Ever think that you hate the character of Debra and not the actress? If you’re having such a strong reaction to her, she must be doing something right! Mike, Jen – congrats you crazy kids!!!

  • Krissy

I disagree with the person who said Jennifer Carpenter is a rotten actress – I think she’s kind of awesome. She’s given a lot of dimension to an otherwise flat character. That said, I can’t WAIT for season 4. Dexter is easily one of the best shows on television right now.

Love Dexter!!! Where is Michael C. Hall’s Emmy? I can’t remember if he got any for Six Feet Under or not…both STELLAR character performances by Hall. I adore him.

  • G

I didn’t know Hall and Carpenter were married. That kinda creeps me out, lol.

  • Michele

Yeah, they were dating for a while then got married New Year’s Eve of last year.

  • Jane

What would make it even more ~*killer*~ is if they bring back Brian’s ghost or something when Dex is getting too domestic!!

  • kim in kentucky

can’t wait til the Dexter doll comes out!!

  • Vikio

I agree with other people who said it – I also got a bit creeped out when I heard Dex and Deb were married. Then reality reasserted itself and I figured that two actors who play those characters met on the show, liked each other and just now, this New Year Eve got married. Still gonna be a bit weird watching them interact from now on as Dex and Deb…

As much as I love Dexter, season 3 felt surprisingly lackluster compared to the first two, and only Jimmy Smiths’s presence saved it from being a total blunder. Season 4 sounds fascinating already, but I hope it takes a few more risks, so it can avoid being formulaic (i.e., Dexter feels lonely with his serial killer tendencies, finds someone he can relate to, and inevitably kills them). Otherwise, the show’s novel concept will run its course and turn dull. Season 1 was a killer start, and the excellent season 2 proved how it could evolve to even greater heights. Complacency is the worst thing that can happen to it, and season 3 came dangerously close to doing that.

  • Canuck’ed

I think Deb is awesome – very believable!

  • Zoot

Jennifer Carpenter is AWESOME and I love her character, she is the second best character on the show. And her interactions with Dexter are one of the best things on the show. I love this show, I can’t wait for its return.
BTW, I don’t find it such a big deal that Carpenter and Hall are married, I think they are both really talented and professional actors who do not mix work and private life.

  • Erin

I was sure Ausiello didn’t have his facts right (i should’ve known better)…Hall and Carpenter are MARRIED?? What happened to the ex-wife? That’s crazy…I pride myself on keeping on top of this stuff. I’m not going to be able to look at their sibling scenes in the same light!!

  • Zookeeper3108

I too am waiting for season 3 to come out on DVD. I don’t get Showtime so that is the only way I can see DEXTER. So please, hurry with #3 please.

  • hannah

I could watch a show with just Dexter and Deb. I love their scenes

  • Rody

This is one of the few consistently great shows on television. I can’t wait for season 4!

  • mike

How about the reincarnation of Lila? I loved her before she went off the deep end kinda like my ex. lol. Love the show, but wonder why Showtime hasn’t done more to pormote the new season.

  • propelthis

I’m glad John Lithgow will be the new serial killer in season 4; he will do a wonderful job!
