She’s playing Red John!!
Wait, that came out wrong. What I meant to say is she’s connected to Red John, the infamous serial killer who took the life of P-Jane’s wife and child.
Let me back up: Sources confirm to me exclusively that Alicia Witt (of Cybill and Law & Order: Criminal Intent fame) will guest star in the season finale of The Mentalist as Rosalind Harker, a luminously beautiful piano player who used to date the madman, the myth, the legend known as Red John.
OMG, this is just the break Simon Baker’s master observationist was looking for, right?! Well, kinda. You see, Rosalind isn’t able to… The thing is… What I’m trying to say is… It’s a big ol’ twist, dammit!

I bet she’s blind so she can’t identify him. Just like in the movie Red Dragon (or the original version, Manhunter.)
You see, Rosalind isn’t able to… SEE!! Though a better twist would have been if she really was Red John, being a redhead and all. And what’s it with redheads and this show. Remember the episode where the chef and his wife were killing all the redheads.
Maybe Red John got a sex change operation. Wouldn’t put that past writers of any show nowadays.

They need to get past the Red John storyline so that Patrick Jane can start dating again. Maybe Alica Witts character is a Transvestite Psychopath with a split personality, and one personality is Red John and is triggered by anyone questioning her/his sexuality.
My first thought is her character will be blind.
Second thought is, does he really have to catch Red John in order to date again? I think he just has to feel that person would be safe.

Well, it wasn't "Mona Lisa Smile", but "Playing Mona Lisa". Alicia is a classically trained pianist, so the role will fit her quite well.
Remember when I first saw Alicia Witt thinking she had potential. Last time I saw her, she skanked up my TV in Two and a half men. Looked horrible and acted poorly. She is still around? And how did her looks drop off so dramatically? Botched plastic surgery?
For Patrick Jane to move on and re-enter the dating pool; yes he has to end the Red John nightmare. That way all the women who watch the Mentalist can start (if they haven’t already) fantasing that they’re the woman who he is seeing and seducing.
