'CSI' plots fraktastic 'Battlestar' crossover

Katevernon_lIf you had any doubts that CSI’s creative team was made up of a bunch of rabid Battlestar Galactica fanboys and girls, this next story should erase them.

As first reported by Chicago Tribune, an upcoming episode of CBS’ still-powerhouse procedural will feature guest appearances by BSG’s fifth cylon, Kate Vernon, and the show’s creator, Ronald D. Moore.

“It’s about a murder at a science fiction convention,” explains executive producer-BSG fanatic Naren Shankar of the April 16 installment, which once again puts the show’s lab rats front and center. “It has a bit of a Battlestar Galactica vibe to it.”

I’ll say. In addition to boasting Vernon and Moore, Shankar says the ep also features, “Hodges (Wally Langham) and Wendy (Liz Vassey) re-enacting scenes from a campy — and entirely fictional — 1960’s era sci-fi TV show.”

As you’ll recall, CSI producers were eyeing BSG’s Katee Sackhoff to replace Jorja Fox last season, but they were ultimately overruled by execs at CBS and Jerry Bruckheimer Television.

So, what do you think? Are CSI and BSG two great tastes that taste great together? Share in the comments!

Kate Vernon was in an episode of CSI in 2004. So that’s fun.

  • Marc

your getting stale ausiello… this was reported like a week ago… whats next? Exclusive : William Petersen leaving CSI?…Long Live Matt Mitovich!

  • No to Chris Sligh

Liz Vassey is SOOO un-friggin’-believably HOT.

  • Jenny

YAY! It sounds like a great opportunity for some Lab Rat love! Thanks Ausiello!

  • Jenna V.

it may have been reported already, but i havent seen the news yet so thanks for posting it!
this will be fun! i love lab rats episodes! especially the one with hodge’s board game. but i digress.

CBS totally screwed by not getting Katee Sackhoff on this show, but maybe Sackhoff will be the smarter one in the end because thus series has been mediocre at best since William Petersen left, and Lauren Lee Smith is no Katee Sackhoff. Hopefully Sackhoff’s pilot will get picked and be a huge hit.

I’m a little wary about this. Whenever BSG is mentioned on other shows, it’s always in a backhanded manner, implying that its fans are all geeks/scifi nerds, which is simply not true.
I’m not sure there’s a whole lot of audience crossover between CSI and BSG. CSI is a really strict procedural show, while it seems to me that most fans of BSG tend to prefer shows that are more focused on story arcs.

Old news and you didn’t even mention the most relevant piece of info: the CSI episode is written by Bradley Thompson and David Weddle…formerly BSG staff writers.
Are there no BSG spoilers left in the universe?

    1) I think it’s about time the show added Liz Vassey to the opening credits and 2) I wonder if someone from BSG with the initials KS might replace whoever’s getting killed off CSI:NY. (Yes, I’m trying to start a credible-sounding-yet-currently-unfounded rumor.)

Kat said: “Whenever BSG is mentioned on other shows, it’s always in a backhanded manner, implying that its fans are all geeks/scifi nerds . . .”
    .
Lorelai Gilmore is hardly a nerd. And Rory was no longer a nerd when *she* name-checked the Cylons, either.

Crap. I might have to actually watch an episode of CSI again. (I haven’t watched since the fifth season.) It’s nice to see BSG and its alums get attention, though.

  • anthony

    can’t wait

  • Sylvia

Stopped watching both these shows long ago, so really doesn’t matter to me.
But it sounds like a fun kind of episode, I used to like it when they delved into the little cultural niches our society produces.
Sci fi fandom is a world unto itself!

Is CBS concerned there CSI demographic is getting too old to bring in the big advertising dollars? Good money is on ‘yes’.

  • elvenhome

I LOVE lab rat episodes. And Hodges and Wendy need to get together, asap.

  • SK

Sorry Rob but KS is slated to star in the new show by the Law & Order folks. What a shame for CBS. She would be so much better than the new girl who is currently on CSI.

Even though Gil Grissom approvingly told an Isaac Asimov anecdote during the first season, I doubt if we’ll see a faithful account of a REAL science fiction convention, one in which people share their love of WRITTEN science fiction, celebrating writers, not actors.
I first heard of nanotechnology and cutting edge weapons systems sitting in the audience at a science fiction conventions but it will all be nerdy geeks with plastic pointed ears because, hey, that’s what they do at “science fiction” conventions. Never mind that the average science fiction convention has more in common with a reading group than the San Diego Comic Con.

A bit of historical info that Naren Shankar and Ron Moore co-wrote one of the best 5th season eps of Star Trek: The Next Generation: “The First Duty”

  • mckizie

i stopped watching csi when sara and grissom left. its just not the same without them. no offence but i dont like the new girl. they need to have sara and grissom visit the show. but i did love the episode of lab rats, its nice to have a little change. so yes i think the show will be great.

I believe Grace Park was in the ranting crowd at the SCI convention as well.

“I believe Grace Park was in the ranting crowd at the SCI convention as well.”
    Yup, she definitely was.
