'HIMYM' exclusive: The Mother at long last revealed?!

Joshradnor_l
For once, I’m probably not jerking your chain with that title.

How I Met Your Mother co-creator Carter Bays tells me that the sitcom’s central mystery is about to be solved. Or rather, resolved. At least kinda-sorta.

“At the end of the season, we will address the title of our show,” reveals Bays, adding that the last four episodes will feature “big events in the lives of our characters — specifically Ted (Josh Radnor). We’re going to wrap up some things that have been left dangling.”

Translation: I think the M-bomb’s about to be dropped!

Bays wouldn’t elaborate on the nature of the revelation (i.e. will the mom actually be ID’d?) or how it might figure into this season’s cliffhanger. “But I will say at the very least that the season will end with a complete sentence,” he teases. “We’ve left some sentence fragments dangling in past seasons, but this year, there will either be a period, a question mark or an exclamation point. We will be giving the audience that.”

Thoughts on what that sentence could be? Do you think we’ll actually meet the mother or just learn more about her? Are you happy the show is getting back to its primary conceit? Sound off below!

Oh, and for more on what lies ahead on your favorite shows, check out this Thursday’s Ask Ausiello, as well as my spoilerific Spring Preview cover story in the next issue of EW (on sale Friday).

That thought is at once AWESOME and AWFUL. This doesn’t mean they’re starting to tie up the show, does it? I don’t ever want this show to end!!
And they need to work on Barney & Robin WAY more than Ted!!

    — dary.

Relax, Rachel, HIWYM (as well as Big Bang) are being renewed for the next TWO years! EW reported that earlier today. The season finale will be legen- wait for it —

  • Joann

Will we ever get the story about the goat in the bathroom?

  • Josie

Forget the mother! What I want to is if the Slap Bet story line going to be continued? Marshall has two more to give!

  • reina

sentence will be “i’m pregnant!” or “are you pregnant?” heh.

  • Lizzy

I really hope the mother ties back to old mystery women Ted never met or met but missed in passing like Slutty Pumpkin or the soulmate the Matchmaker found in the First Season

  • drella66

I could care less if we ever meet the mother. Ted is the worst part of the show!

  • Helen

This is kind of awfsome (not a typo- watch the show people). Like, I actually don’t care that much about the mother. I care way more about brOTP and the goat and stuff, and actually the idea of meeting the mother sucks because it sort of means that the show is gonna end (nnnoooooooo) But I like the idea of Ted getting a non-suckish story line. Lately he seems kind of– pointless? Idk, I never cared about Stella (except for the fact that she might know the mother– see Ten Sessions) but I do want to know who it is. I kind of hope that ted says, and that’s how I met your mother, the season ends and the next season starts with the kids yelling- what? But she hated you/is dead/lives in Norway. Or is that just me……..well, anything is possimpible.

  • kelly

$20 says the question at the end is ” Will You Marry Me ? ” and we never see her face.

  • SKR

This doesnt have anything to do with the mother, they are going to tie up the Barney/Robin story.

  • patty

I don’t wanna know!!!cus I never want it to end. This is really the best “FRIENDS” ensemble show I have ever seen, funny, well written, not to cliche….I was always hoping it was Robin, but oh well.

  • ea

I hope we find out where the Pineapple came from.

  • Diane

I don’t want HIMYM to end so I hope they don’t introduce the mother for a LONG time.

  • TurnOfTheLight

I don’t care about the mother. I don’t even like Ted, he is the most annoying character on the show [for me]. go Barney:]]]

  • Robin

Story doesn’t have to end, title nonwithstanding. It’s developed a fanbase. I’d like to see them get it over with and move on to newlywed life at some point.

  • james

They need to tie that St. Pattys Day party to this, as well as the Yellow Umbrella.
However, I think the storyline that they are going to tie up is Barney/Robin. Once they are together, Ted will realize he is all alone and will find his wife.

  • Jake

I’m going with ‘Do you wanna marry me?’ as the final sentence.

  • tanya

It better not be Robin…she belongs with BARNEY.

  • lauri

    seriously… i couldn’t care less about ted… TEAM BARNEY!!!!!
    Awesome!!!!

  • Bruno

    I want goat answers.

  • Bruno

    I want goat answers.

  • Andie

Joann, I’m pretty sure I’ve read that this season finale will reference the goat from last season, so I’m hoping that means good things for Barney/Robin?!

  • Myra

My 2 favorite comedies are HIMYM and Big Bang. They’re a great way to start the week. Even if the mother is revealed, I want the show to continue. I love Barney. He’s an awesome character!
I hope the dangling sentence they address is the goat in the bathroom.

  • Bruce

I like the show but I couldn’t care less who the mother is.

  • Bill

I’m guessing the season ender will go back to something from the FIRST episode. Future Ted STARTED the story of “How I Met Your Mother” with Ted meeting Robin; Somehow, that has to figure in to meeting the actually mother….

  • Frank

I find the character of Ted sort of annoying. I thing the shift to Robin and Marshall and Lily more compeling. The show is great and if they do reveal the mother, I will still watch

  • Caroline

I love the show, can’t wait to see what happens with Barney and Robin, still curious about the Mother but not too attached.
I’m betting that we’ll see the Mother, Ted meets her etc., but that he doesn’t fall in love right away, doesn’t realize she’ll be the Mother, etc. He’s such a romantic that it would be interesting to see him *not* fall in love at first sight with the Mother.

  • k

I just had a thought that would probably never happen, but would be interesting. What if the kids actually were adopted and Ted is really telling them how he met the woman he adopted them from. Again completely off base I’m sure, but worth pondering I suppose.

  • Michelle

Robin is DEFINITELY not the mother. At the end of the pilot where Ted meets Robin, he tells the kids “that’s how I met your Aunt Robin”.
