Updated: ABC cancels 'Life on Mars,' Mol relocating to 'Eastwick'?

Categories: Life on Mars

Lifeonmars_lOnce again I get attached to a show with the word Mars in the title. Once again I’m mourning its premature demise.

Multiple sources are confirming that ABC has canceled my beloved Life on Mars. Per an insider, the network recently advised the show’s producers that it would not be ordering a second season. The heads-up will allow them to make this year’s season finale a series finale, thus leaving no questions unanswered. And unlike Pushing Daisies, Dirty Sexy Money, Eli Stone, etc., all indications are that ABC will actually air this series finale. We’re making progress, people!

Another advantage of pulling the plug now as opposed to in May is it allows the show’s stars to audition for fall pilots. Case in point: Gretchen Mol is currently in talks to join ABC’s adaptation of The Witches of Eastwick

Mourning Mars‘ passing? Relieved we’ll at least get closure? Hoping Sam and Annie will get it on before he hops on his time machine back to 2009? Sound off below!

Awesome. And just brutal. Thanks again, ABC, for being such an awesome network. How the alphabet isn’t fourth in the standings every year is downright baffling.

  • MEH

It got more episodes state-side than in the UK. Knowing how the BBC run turned out, and once Colm Meany was dropped I kind of had no interest in getting invested in the U.S. version.

  • Brenda Mallory

At least they’re finishing out the season and we’re not left completely hanging with the mystery.

  • Michele

    Sob…I am crushed.

  • Jordan

Honestly, I’m not going to miss it. If anyone saw the unreleased pilot with the different cast I’m sure they’d agree that the end result was a lot better, but I just didn’t think it was that great. Harvey Keitel and Gretchen Mol were awesome, and I loved Maggie Siff’s short guest appearance, but overall I just wasn’t very impressed.
It just didn’t measure up to the original BBC version. That, and something about Appelbaum, Nemec and Rosenberg’s shows just bug me. October Road had a similar level of cheesiness that I just couldn’t put a finger on, and this show suffered from the same thing too. Maybe it’s the dialogue? Odd musical choices? I don’t know, but I’m not skeptical about Happy Town too.

  • Jordan

Rather, I AM skeptical about Happy Town. My bad.

  • Jennifer

I am so upset about this! My husband and I both really enjoyed watching this show.

I loved the show. I will miss all of your faces and your great talent. What about those Wallace twins? Are they going on to Disney? Cute boys.

I realize this isn’t realistic to most folks, but I’ve stopped watching ABC entirely…I don’t watch Lost or those Housewife Hags or any of the reality shows they offer…once they cancelled Pushing Daisies, that was it for me…I don’t watch any CW shows because they axed Veronica Mars and Gilmore Girls…we just pulled our Time Warner cable boxes outta the house and are down to just the 4 main channels (not including PBS)…at this rate, I’ll only be watching NOVA and Mr. Rogers Neighborhood…

ABC sucks. End of story. They always cancel good programing. RIP ‘Life on Mars.’

  • Denis

Figures ABC cancels another awesome show, yet NBC’s crappy Heroes is still on the air
    *barf*

  • Mary

blah. this totally blows. LOM was getting so good; i should have known better than get attached to it.

  • ABC

oh good, the bachelor gets another season but great shows like Life on Mars and Pushing Daisies get cancelled. FAIL ABC

  • jaimi

That’s too bad…I really liked Life on Mars, and was completely hooked on Eli Stone. RIP Life on Mars :(

  • Kristiine

I dropped all my ABC shows when they cancelled Pushing Daisies. I have just had it with ABC. They are willing to pick up amazing shows, Pushing Daisies, Lfe on Mars, Once & Again, Relativity, My So Called Life, Homefront (yes, I do know how to hold a grudge) and then they can’t commit. I’m not letting them break my heart again.

  • christina

I am very sad about this development, unfortunately I realized when they were moving it to Wednesdays, ABC was signing it’s death certificate, there is just no way it could hope to compete with CSI NY or Law and Order.

  • M

People can rant at ABC all they want, but the truth is that the show got cancelled because not enough people are watching it.
It’s easy to sit back and criticize when you aren’t the ones spending millions of dollars on a show that loses you money.

  • Class

Great show, great cast…How many times are you going to get Mr. White, Christopher Moltisanti and Betty Page on a mystery show with great rock songs?

  • jcpdiesel21

I thought about checking this show out, but now I’m glad I didn’t bother. You almost have to wait a year or two to see if a network has enough faith in a show to let it last and let yourself get invested in it now.

  • Allyson Lyons

That totally sucks! I guess we can’t send Mars Bars to protest…. since that’s been done before. How about white loafers? Or how about Mounds… ya know… “no nuts.” ;o)

  • Ellen

I don’t feel like this has come as any great surprise – it was being predicted that the show would struggle to last past a season from the airing of the first episode. The British version was looking strained after just 16 episodes – regardless of how good the drama was, the overarching mystery was inevitably going to become tedious.

  • Stacy

My husband and I loved watching the show, we both had a feeling it wouldn’t stay on. I’m really getting tired of getting attached to shows that don’t last (Pushing Daisies, Men on Trees, Swingtown) I about ready to just give up.

  • Joe

I smelled the death from this show a mile away. That’s why I removed the Tivo Season Pass two weeks ago.

  • meg

I’ve realized that I don’t care about the length of a show, just that its wrapped up so I can live with this. There needs to be some law that makes networks give shows advance notice.

  • Fatima

And networks expect us to watch new shows why? It’s sad that they treat TV like the box office now. If you don’t have a huge opening week, you’re doomed. Why try anything until season 3 these days if they just yank everything without any time to build. TV is so depressing

  • Ramiro Mtz

I’m not that sad Life On Mars is canceled. Having seen the original UK series there was nowhere for this series to go. Kudos on the transplant but i hope they don’t stray from the UK ending. That’s my only fear. :/

  • drdx

I think it is time to take all dramas off network TV and replace them with reality drivel and game shows. That way when something gets cancelled we will be overjoyed that we don’t have to watch it anymore. Really going to miss this one. I’m sure any finale now will seem devised and unnatural. He’ll probably wake up in the shower and realize it was all a dream!

This was must-watch TV for me. Can they shop it to another network that appreciates dramas? TNT perhaps?

  • cheesus

Bummer, man. Hopefully, ABC will end it properly — sort of like a one-season mini-series.
