'Grey's Anatomy' shocker: McDreamy quits!?

Either Shonda Rhimes is getting sloppy or she’s trying to put me out of a job!

In a just-released logline for Grey’s Anatomy’s March 12 episode — a logline the drama’s spoilerphobic creator no doubt signed off on — ABC reveals a doozy of a spoiler: Derek is quitting Seattle Grace!

Here’s what the actual teaser reads: "After learning at a deposition that more of his patients have died than survived, Derek decides to quit — even as Meredith refuses to give up on him."

Now, the chances of his resignation sticking are no doubt slim, but still. That’s a pretty major twist to give away in a press release, don’t you think? Not that I’m complaining or anything. (For the record, a Grey’s insider assures me that Patrick Dempsey "is not leaving the show.")

Unfortunately, the rest of the description for the episode is fairly benign, save for the revelation that Loretta Devine is returning as the Chief’s wife to mediate Richard’s ongoing battle with Bailey.  It also confirms that Izzie’s interns discover "something unsettling" about Patient X (a.k.a. Izzie), but that’s old news.

Thoughts about Derek quitting? How long before he changes his mind? (My guess: By the third act!) And could this be connected to the unexpected path the Mer-Der romance will be taking later this season? Sound off below!

Even IF Derek quits, i’m sure it’ll be resolved by the episode’s end.

Isn’t your job to give us scoops, not point out things we can easily find out ourselves by looking at our TV Guides?

  • OFGS

That stands for, “Of For God’s Sake.” I absolutely HATE when television shows pursue a storyline that the audience KNOWS from the start will never stick. This is such a stupid storyline.

  • Trev

The fact his quitting came up in a logline tells me it’s probably a fake-out and no doubt temporary. Still, that is one artfully crafted tag.

  • teahater

Hm, sounds interesting. Too bad I’ll be watching Supernatural instead!

  • Robbie

This is hardly newsworthy, the storyline was obviously heading in this direction. What happens to Izzy and George is still the star of the show, for better or worse.

He will probably quit for the episode, or something. He won’t actually leave Seattle Grace. At the beginning of the episode, he will quit. Then at the end of the episode he will realize he can’t live without beinga doctor, so he goes back to work.
Or something like that. No way would Derek quit. And if Dempsey isn’t leaving the show, how could he quit? They are rarely shown outside of the hospital.

    No McDreamy…No Grey’s.
Who wants to watch if he is not in the show????

  • Amanda

Why an entry for this? It’s not even a spoiler and it sounds very predictable…
Derek quits because he thinks he isn’t a very good surgeon due to all the recent patient deaths he’s had. Izzie is diagnosed with skin cancer and discovers that the cancer has spread to her brain (which will explain the Denny crap, her other vision problems and odd behavior). Izzie needs risky brain surgery and Derek is the one who’ll perform the surgery which will be successful. Yes, Izzie is NOT going to die contrary to all the rumors (Shonda is laughing her butt off at everyone thinking Izzie is going to die). Derek regains his confidence and ends up returning to his job. The season ender will be a happy one with MerDer doing great and definitely engaged. Izzie ends the season recovering from surgery, treating the cancer and happy with Alex. You can write that down Ausiello. Heigl isn’t leaving the show at the end of this season.

I don’t think Izzie has skin cancer. The mistaken diagnoses for the (later) anemia patient was given to her as Leukemia. That is why I don’t understand why Izzie was looking for lumps or suspicious moles? Please leukemia and anemia deal with the composition of the blood. Granted one is cancer and the other is a disorder.

  • Jen

DUH – he’s not quitting Seattle Grace, he’s quitting the clinical trial – you know the one that’s killed everyone except one person?

This is the first time in forever that I’m looking forward to Grey’s Anatomy, Derek’s storyline sounds really interesting which means they’re probably gonna screw it up.

  • nykolus

i would, DebsG. can’t stand Derek; he’s an ass!!!

who cares? First, why do people watch this show still after the stupid dead-Denny storyline? I gave up about 8 episodes into this season and I won’t go back. That aside, characters “quit” on these kind of shows all the time. That’s not a “spoiler” just a plotline that will likely be resolved in a few short episodes, if not by the end of this episode itself.

As far as I’m concerned they can dump both Derek and Meredith.

  • rose

I think Izzie has the cancer her daughter had, I don’t recall what it was now, but didn’t she have to donate bone marrow to her in order to save her?

  • Mike

“I don’t think Izzie has skin cancer. The mistaken diagnoses for the (later) anemia patient was given to her as Leukemia. That is why I don’t understand why Izzie was looking for lumps or suspicious moles?”
She was checking for swollen lymph nodes that could be biopsied.

  • Resident’s Wife

Now I love me some Grey’s Anatomy, but this scenario is exactly why most medical professionals think the show is ridiculous. There is NO way Derek would not know the outcome of every single one of his surgeries. Therefore, how can he be blindsided in a deposition? I realize this is a drama and not a documentary, but at least have a majority of your story based somewhat in fact. This is almost as silly as having the 5 SURGICAL interns care for the premature babies a few seasons ago. That’s what OB residents are for. Or Little Grey getting accepted as an intern and Mer having NO IDEA!! The upper levels always participate in recruiting the new class of interns, so there was no reason for Mer to be shocked. These inconsistencies are what makes most residents I know dislike the program. That being said, I can’t wait to see how the drama of Derek “quitting” plays out.

  • Sara

ugh, this show has totally jumped the shark. Personally I think they should all quit and Seattle Grace can hire some actual doctors who aren’t too busy seeing dead people, falling for patients and boinking each other at every turn around. This started as a pretty promising show and now it is just trash with annoying characters (Izzy, Meredith, George). And what exactly is dreamy about McDreamy anyway? GAG! Give me McSteamy!!!

  • Deedee

I wholeheartedly agree with Sara. The whole show needs to NOT be resuscitated.

  • mells

I resigned from watching Grey’s last week. I’ve had with the crappy writing/drawn out plots and interns I don’t even feel like I know, nor, care about. I was pissed with Dr. Hahn got the boot. I have only one regret in life, and this is watching this Crappy Show for 2 years over the Office. EPIC FAIL.
    Grey’s is a fraud.

  • Lars

I imagine it will be resolved and he will stay. It’s just a plot teaser. I was pretty happy with last week’s episode and I enjoy reading the inside scoop stuff here! I find it interesting that the people who seem so against this show and consistantly talk of it ‘jumping the shark’ are also the ones consistantly logging on to make comments. What’s that about? :-P

  • Babulah

    What is a log line?

  • lauren

if people don’t care, then why do they even bother to comment? it makes no sense.
and as for grey’s jumping the shark, let us now retire that term shall we. yes, grey’s had a rough patch for a little while there, but it has more than redeemed itself in the past 6 episodes.
oh and if it truly jumped the shark, ratings would have went wayy down…instead they are doing just fine.
as for the new mcdreamy storyline, even though it has a predictable ending- i’m excited to see the whole ‘dark and twisty’ version of derek, while meredith is the strong one. i think it’s a nice change.
and i’ll be money meredith proposes to derek.

  • Judy T

This show has never recovered after the writer’s strike last year. It is so in left field and doesn’t even make sense most of the time. And, it was sooo good in the beginning. I am about done with it.

  • KT

Patrick Dempsey is a huge part of the show! I liked this update because this means PD will be getting more screen time. Shonda, don’t listen to the naysayers. Personally, I hope to see more Mer/Der!

  • sarah

Is anybody watching this show? It’s just awful. Tune into ER. That’s how you do a medical drama.

  • Julie

Holy Moly! There are cranky people commenting on here! Don’t like it, go away! No one makes you watch. I love it! I can’t wait to see how things develop.

  • coreyq

I really enjoy the show this year. I love Sandra Oh’s story line – it is making her human. If Patrick Dempsey is unhappy with his death toll then it would make sense for him to quit – I like that story line as well.

  • DEB

Hey, people! I want entertaiment, not reality. We see that everyday, with the economy and all! Give me the make-believe anyday for television and the movies!!!
