'Grey's Anatomy' exclusive: Faye Dunaway scrubbing in

Jan 11, 2009, 02:59 PM | by Michael Ausiello

Categories: Grey's Anatomy

Fayedunaway_lSomeone's been hiding out at Seattle Grace all these years, and trust me when I say you are never going to believe who it is.

Mommie Dearest -- Faye Dunaway!

Sources confirm to me exclusively that the Oscar winner (for Network), who hasn't taken a small-screen gig since a 2006 episode of CSI, has signed on for at least one episode of Grey's Anatomy to air in February. She'll play a renowned doc at the hospital who crosses paths with the Chief, Cristina and Owen.

What do you think? Is this the coolest piece of stunt casting so far this year? Hit me below!

I thought she looked great. Hope to see her on GA again!

Jesse Sun, Jan 18, 2009 at 12:42 AM EST

I can hear her now: Tina! (Yang) Bring me the axe! :-)

julio Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 07:22 PM EST

Ausiello, are you such a flamboyant fool that you can only mention Faye Dunaway after the catty Mommie Dearest intro?
Faye Dunaway is not Mommie Dearest or Joan Crawford. It was only a role she played a long time ago. Get over it.
She is an actress and has portrayed many roles over the span of her career but you don't mention those.
You really are ignorant and pathetic.

Bill Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 07:10 PM EST

She is a great actress and has taken good care of herself over the years. She looks beautiful. I have never watched Grey's Anatomy but I will surely watch the episodes with her. I saw her live performance in Master Class and it was brilliant. She received a standing ovation and three curtain calls. And this was from an LA audience.

Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 05:49 PM EST

OH MY GOD. Stop with the guest stars and new characters. Holy crap.
Seriously, I love Grey's to death, it's my favourite show, but what the hell is happening? Are the writers so lazy that they must introduce a new character every week?

How about they get rid of all these new characters (Sadie, Owen, Lexie, Hahn, Dixon, etc.) and make some good storylines for the original characters (Meredith, Derek, Cristina, Alex, Izzie, George, Chief, Bailey, Sloan)?

And for God's sake .. JUST BRING BACK BURKE already! This show has been downhill without him.

Crystal Diane Stevens Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 05:19 PM EST

I just hope Faye will get some real screentime. GA is a hopelessly overpopulated show. Much like DH. I can see why Faye would do this show. It'll put her face in front of a large audience (larger than that of her recent films which have been mostly indies) but I think she would have been better suited to either Desperate Housewives (and pile on the camp) or do something cool on HBO like In Treatment.

Roberts Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 08:36 AM EST

The story lines were just slipping since season 4. Don't care if they bring how many guest stars in, as long as the stories are meanfully and good (more surgeries / interactions amongst the major characters - not necessary in 'love' relationships!) And, I am surprised that no-one mentioned about 'Burke'. Cristina is not Cristina without Burke! Dr. Hunt can be a relationship, but he just does not get Cristina!

moira eicholtz Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 11:55 PM EST

I liked Grey's Anatomy at the beginning but am having a hard time keeping up with all the romances.
Never liked the George character.
Who is this Shonda? Is she an actress on the show.
I think E.R. was better than this.

S. Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 06:05 PM EST

Is she being cast as Addison, and Archer's mother for the Xover episodes?

LH Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 05:47 PM EST

Ok, I'm just wondering if FD's face is now frozen like that???!! If so, I know whom to recommend for the next Joker.

Seriously, FD is great & always delivers. I'll tune in for her stint for sure.

Donna Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 04:28 PM EST

Why would you cast her? Does she need a job or something? Why can't we just stick to the regulars, they are what made the show anyway.

Tyler Durden Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 10:44 AM EST

I'm a fan of guest stars as patients (a la Eric Stoltz), but not as doctors.

Dunaway will be great. She always is, but as a doctor she'll only enunciate the revolving door that is Grey's Anatomy.

Kim Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 06:12 AM EST

That's all Grey's need, another old actress taking away more time from the original cast members. Rhimes, get a clue from the fans and the media, your show is going down the tubes. Get back to the original characters before you find yourself in the unemployment line.

Kylie Koyote Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 12:39 AM EST

Just bring back some good medical cases - they are doctors - medicine is what brought them together and gives them depth. Romance is only interesting as a by-product of the characters working closely together on a case. Give them lives to save or a medical mystery to diagnose and then let them fall for each other across the operating room, or whatever.

rjs Mon, Jan 12, 2009 at 09:29 PM EST

Everything is better with Faye! She'll raise the bar, finally, for this show. I want Grey's to be good, because I'm in a tiny town for grad school and I miss Seattle.

Maggie Mon, Jan 12, 2009 at 09:07 PM EST

NO MORE!!!!!!! Even I am saying ENOUGH WITH THE ONE-SHOT DOCS, and I'm a HUGE fan of whatever they toss at us!

Tara Mon, Jan 12, 2009 at 08:16 PM EST

Dear God, enough with all the stunt casting on this show! George hasn't had a storyline all season, can't they worry over THAT instead of having big name guest stars for sweeps? Blech, why I watch, I don't know!

Matt Skoczen Mon, Jan 12, 2009 at 06:09 PM EST

Glad to see Faye somewhere. She's a talented actress and, no matter what, I'll always love her for doing "Mommie Dearest"!

JodiBri Mon, Jan 12, 2009 at 06:05 PM EST

Faye Dunaway may be just what the doctor ordered. However, it won't matter unless the wroter's join the party and quit with all the ridiculous storylines. It started when Katherine Heigl refused her Emmy nomination because she said the writer's hadn't given her an Emmy worthy arc and threatened if it happened again she wasn't going to re-up her contract. So the writer's gave her a storyline- the stupidest one they could think of, one worthy of an afternoon soap opera and Susan Lucci on a good day. Someone said she held them up for ransom and we've been paying the price all year and they were right. I for one and tired of such stupid plotlines. Grey's was great the first year or so but they've definitely "jumped the shark" and don't have long to do something or start worrying about being replaced before long.

Michael Mon, Jan 12, 2009 at 04:14 PM EST

It's good to see that Faye has taken interest in working on this series. I don't watch it much but I will just for her.

Jane Mon, Jan 12, 2009 at 03:42 PM EST

Interesting turn of events
Sad that grey's anatomy got rid of the lesbian love story. Too brave i suppose

I've been a fan since day one of Grey's, however, I'm finding it hard to watch since the Denny ghost story started. Want to fast forward through those parts. I liked Denny, but this is going too far. I'd much rather see more of Owen Hunt and Christina, those two barely had any time this last episode. They are why I'm still tuning in. Eric Stoltz is a great actor and really is creepy in the death row character. Can't say I have any strong feelings one way or the other on Faye Dunaway's guest role.

bored2tears Mon, Jan 12, 2009 at 01:02 PM EST

I'm a screaming queen (not on the Ausiello level) and even I don't give a flying funk. Does anyone still care about this steaming pile of Shonda?

Leigh Mon, Jan 12, 2009 at 12:58 PM EST

Because GREY'S didn't have *enough* behind-the-scenes drama?? Holy schnitzel, Batman!

Ace Mon, Jan 12, 2009 at 11:17 AM EST

She is undeniably a good actress, but her face scares me now. She is a walking bilboard for why you should NOT get plastic surgery.

Bonnie and Clyde Mon, Jan 12, 2009 at 11:10 AM EST

I love Faye, but I wonder if the story line will centered around correcting her botched plastic surgery. Please.

kathy Mon, Jan 12, 2009 at 10:43 AM EST

What is the flippin point of this? Enough with the new characters & stunt casting GA! Michael how about some backstage news on Un-casting and the firing of the writers??? That is what needs to happen to GA

Jessica Mon, Jan 12, 2009 at 10:41 AM EST

Shonda Rhimes is a psycho hack who needs to be run out of ABC. She must have ABC's honchos by the balls for them to not can her yet

Mon, Jan 12, 2009 at 10:41 AM EST

ummm is this supposed to make people forget the show is a TRAIN WRECK?

Eric Kane Mon, Jan 12, 2009 at 10:28 AM EST

omg, those CHOPPERS!!! Oh Faye...

merderfan Mon, Jan 12, 2009 at 08:01 AM EST

The stunt casting is just pointless. If they want to save the show MerDer need to get married and it needs to be romantic as h**l!

And they do need to fire Shonda.

oliver23 Mon, Jan 12, 2009 at 04:17 AM EST

Model=Fashion , A hot girl wrote this in her blog on ta ll da ting site: ~~~T a l l m i n g l e. c o m ~~~ ,seems she is famous there ,many guys posted their comments on her blog.

Mon, Jan 12, 2009 at 03:38 AM EST

Hmmmm - so Callie's new love intrest then?! lol I wouldn't put it past Shonda right now

Joe Remi Mon, Jan 12, 2009 at 02:30 AM EST

My wife and I are hopeless. We know the show became awful a long time ago, but we have to watch. It seems to take more cabernet each year to get through it, though.

I love Faye Dunaway. She was my first nude-in-a-movie when dad took us to see Bonnie & Clyde at the drive-in. Very impressed. Come to think of it, my first hail of bullets, too!

bibbo Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 11:38 PM EST

I hate 'Greys Anatomy' but I adore Faye Dunaway. I'll watch.

Yellowhat Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 11:24 PM EST

I love Faye Dunaway! I can't wait.

Jane Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 11:20 PM EST

Did the chief get back with his wife? If not, Maybe Ms.Dunaway is a possible romance for him. That could be cool. I say get rid of all the new interns except for Meridith's sis, and please someone re-kill Denny and make sure he doesn't come back ever. And get rid of George if he's not going to have a story anytime soon. How about George, Callie, and the new hotter lesbian/ bisexual intern become a threesome and move to Venice Beach and let them annoy the cast from Private Practice for a while. I quit watching that mess after the first few episodes.

ShutUpRob Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 10:25 PM EST

This is only good stunt casting if it involves Sloan telling her that he thinks that the butchers who did her multiple facelifts should be shot on sight.

Moe Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 08:02 PM EST

They're desperate as hell and I love Faye Dunaway. But I won't get excited, I mean they had Mary McDonnell on and look what they did with her. Grey's should just have that SK they have on kill off everyone and end the series.

claudenorth Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 07:37 PM EST

Pete, you are right on the money. La Dunaway is a great actress and star and deserves better than to be stunt-cast on a slipping television drama. Of course, I'll end up tuning in to see her, even though I've never had any interest in Grey's Anatomy.

maggie37 Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 07:29 PM EST

I agree, get rid of the writers, reduce the cast and get back to basics with original members. Sex with a ghost UGH! Let's hope Mer/Der aren't going to continually be cast as emotional tragics.

Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 07:13 PM EST

Grey's Anatomy is ridiculous.

Pete Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 06:51 PM EST

Does anyone else wonder why an actress of the caliber of Ms. Faye Dunaway has been reduced to TV guest starrring gigs? The lady has starred in at least three films I would consider some of the greatest of all time: Bonnie & Clyde, Chinatown, and Network. Grey's Anatomy is a far cry from that lot.

Kimberly Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 06:49 PM EST

I'm done with this show. Having sex with a ghost? What? God, ER managed to be better than this and it is in its 15th year.

Rock Chick Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 06:34 PM EST

YES, I AM SCREAMING! QUIT BRINGING IN NEW CAST MEMBERS UNTIL YOU GIVE THE EXISTING CAST SOME GOOD STORYLINES1 AND, ELLEN POMPEO, YOU ARE NEEDED IN MAKEUP!

TorontoTom Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 06:18 PM EST

Like the interns doing apendectomies on themselves, La Dunaway will give herself a brow lift and a tummy tuck. And then sleep with Sloan. And ignore George. And sleep with Callie. And then stare blamkly at Meredith. We're talking Shonda spin-off material here, people...

Chelsea Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 05:49 PM EST

I usually hate stunt casting, but my love for Ms. Dunaway definitely makes me cautiously excited. Okay, Grey's, I'll give you another chance for now...

Isabella Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 05:37 PM EST

I don't think adding Dunaway will save the show. I love her and all (Bonnie and Clyde is one of my favorite movies), but it's just the shows writing and plots. Here are my main problems with the new season:
-Ghost Denny - It's just getting creepy
-Lack of George - He's been my favorite since Season 1, now after Gizzie is over he's been given nothing to do.
-Alex/Izzie - It's just getting old now. Alex is still an ass, and I find it a little strange that he is not worried about Izzie seeing Denny.
-McSteamy/Lexie - How can he talk so casually about sex with Lexie with Callie?
-Mer/Der - Keep them together. The on again/off again crap is getting old.

Yolanda Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 05:26 PM EST

She should play Sloan's mother. Now that's something I could get behind.

Move On Already... Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 05:22 PM EST

B*tch b*tch b*tch-whine whine whine-complain complain complain-cry cry cry-hyperbole hyperbole hyperbole... The typical Greys Anatomy talkback. If you don't like the show anymore, DONT WATCH IT. Watch The Office and 30 Rock instead (like me). Or lose more brain cells by watching another procedural drama like CSI. You guys always complain about everything. Just change the channel. I hate Heroes now, do you see me crying about how bad it is? No. Because I moved on LAST season. Do the fans of Greys Anatomy a favor and just stop watching. It's because of nitpicking crybabies that the show slid creatively. The writers are so receptive to fan critique (unlike other shows) that they take all of your foolish gripes seriously and listen to you guys to the shows own detriment. Faye Dunaway joining a network drama should be greeted with cheers, not pathetic gripes from foolish fans. Write your own scripts, pitch them to ABC, and if it gets picked up, let's see if you can get to year 5.

Kelly Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 04:42 PM EST

While I like Eric Stolz, I'm tired of the Will and Grace like guest stars. Concentrate on good writing, and all of the main cast members, instead of guest stars. Give Alex more, George more, Lexie more, Chief more, etc. Enough guest stars, cheating, one night stands, and Ghost Denny.

Kat Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 04:39 PM EST

i laughed at myself when my reaction was
'ugggh, seriously?'
and then i realised that no one has said seriously on grey's in AGES.. probably because we never see the characters we like anymore.
i can't keep up with these new characters, its getting more complicated than studying for my exams.
Fire the writers, hire a life coach or something to work out the issues between the cast members and give us back what we want.
Mer/Der.. 5 original interns, more BAILEY, someone please fix izzy, keep owen and make the chief kick all the rest out and work on getting a #1 hospital, and show back.

Jaslyne Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 04:29 PM EST

Jeeez ANOTHER doc. It's getting out of hand!!! My advice: back to the basics. The Meredith/Derek relationship, the 5 "interns" and Bailey being her awesome self.
They need to get rid of Denny and stop casting new people.

Jaslyne Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 04:28 PM EST

Jeeez ANOTHER doc. It's getting out of hand!!! My advice: back to the basis. The Meredith/Derek relationship, the 5 "interns" and Bailey being her awesome self.
They need to get rid of Denny and stop casting new people.

Claire Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 04:28 PM EST

Another cast member (even for one episode)? This makes cast member 67 right? Someone pinch me, I must be living a dream. Note to Shonda: Remember the original cast members? You probably don't (since they are never on screen all that much) but I do and I miss them. STOP THE OVER CASTING OF THIS SHOW!! Cast bloat does not equal quality. Surely Grey's has to know that by now...(or maybe not judging by this season).

Sally in Chicago Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 04:27 PM EST

They should have signed Faye about 2 years ago....I would still be with the show, she's awesome. If her appearance saves the show, they should sign her on...I'll come back.

drashee Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 04:23 PM EST

too bad she's playing a doc - why can't she be izzie's mum?!

mdb Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 04:08 PM EST

I totally agree with the person who said fire the writers - enough with the new characters and special guest stars. All the star power in the world cannot save GA - they need new writers

Pamela Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 04:07 PM EST

Faye Dunaway is not going to save this disaster of a show.

Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 04:06 PM EST

Hey ABC instead of casting & casting & casting & casting & casting & casting & casting & casting & casting & casting & casting & casting & casting & casting & casting & casting & casting & casting.

How about FIRING ALL the writers?

Krista Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 04:05 PM EST

Shonda thinks casting will hide the piss poor writing?? She ain't fooling anyone.

JJ Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 04:04 PM EST

Will she be an ALIVE person or a ghost having sex with Owen? Sad how pathetic Grey's Anatomy has sunk. Stunt casting is all they have to try to save their name

Maria Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 04:04 PM EST

I have to wonder what they put in the fabulous Ms. Dunaway's drinking water to get her to sign.

mary Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 04:02 PM EST

does greys do anything but add to the cast? every day it's greys anatomy casting news.

Zach Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 04:01 PM EST

Izzie's mother??!!

Bren Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 03:59 PM EST

YAWN YAWN YAWN More stunt casting.

I am SHOCKED I TELL YOU!

CB Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 03:57 PM EST

Sad that a once great show has to stoop to stunt casting.

jfms777 Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 03:52 PM EST

Faye Dunaway . . . playing a surgeon . . . surgery . . . cosmetic surgery . . .
Faye Dunaway. The cycle is complete!

Christine Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 03:42 PM EST

It's official, Grey's Anatomy is rivaling Will and Grace for stunt casting instead of writing good scripts. Shonda should be ashamed. So done with this show, the last episode was lame.

Sina Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 03:37 PM EST

Can't poor George get a storyline at least?

nyal2008 Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 03:35 PM EST

Nothing against Ms.Dunaway, but they will try anything to save it at this point!

Cara Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 03:22 PM EST

this is certainly the best casting stunt i've seen in awhile! guess i can't check out before that.

J Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 03:18 PM EST

umm... no...
