Exclusive: 'Heroes' stages 'Pushing Daisies' reunion!

Jan 9, 2009, 01:54 PM | by Michael Ausiello

Categories: Heroes, Pushing Daisies

Swoosiekurtzheroes_lIt's not exactly a Pushing Daisies resurrection, but I'll gladly take it (and so should you): Swoosie Kurtz is reuniting with her former Daisies boss, Bryan Fuller, on Heroes!

Kurtz's spokesperson confirms to me exclusively that the actress has inked a deal to guest star in an April episode of Heroes written by, yep, Fuller himself!

"Bryan wrote the part specifically for her," says Kurtz' spokesperson of her character, Millie, an old society friend of Angela Petrelli's. "It's a really fun role."

As of now, Kurtz is signed for one episode, but there's definite recurring potential -- particularly if NBC renews Heroes for a fourth season (as many expect it will).

Heroes' Fuller-infused fourth volume, "Fugitives," kicks off on Feb. 2.

Meanwhile, there's still no news as to when or where ABC will air Daisies final three episodes -- and, in this case, no news is definitely bad news.

Not cool, ABC. Not cool at all.

However, the Kurtz/Fuller reunion on Heroes? Very cool. You with me on both counts? Sound off in the comments!

I couldn't be happier for Bryan Fuller and Swoosie Kurtz, but there is no way that this will help ease the pain of losing the best show on TV (a.k.a. I say that PD has many viewers in Denmark, I am so sad to not hear any news, I have been holding my breath ever since the last episode.

It is better wrap the series up in 3 episodes in a brilliant finale, that way we would have a 2 season amazing show that we can look back on with happiness.++ http://one.xthost.info/bi12345/hifouthay.html tattoo

Mary Thu, Jan 29, 2009 at 03:52 PM EST

I don't think the networks have the patience to wait for shows like PD to build an audience. It is a sad fact, but a fact none-the-less.

Of course, Bryan Fuller went to Heroes because he needed the work and he was promised more than just working on that show... http://ioka.surge8.com/xistffome.html globe

MK, I'm sorry, but your post is definitely not a very educated one. The network TV business is definitely far different from cable TV business. Cable gets it's money in many different ways unlikenetwork TV which is completely free and available for everyone and relies purely on ad dollars. Pushing Daisies was bringing such terrible numbers that it had absolutely no chance of survival. Sorry, but you can't blame the networks. Blame the viewers.

LineC Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 03:46 PM EST

I just stumpled upon Pushing Daisies some time ago, being from Denmark I am not part of the viewing numbers, but I know I speak for many when I say that PD has many viewers in Denmark, I am so sad to not hear any news, I have been holding my breath ever since the last episode.

It is better wrap the series up in 3 episodes in a brilliant finale, that way we would have a 2 season amazing show that we can look back on with happiness. Cutting it just leaves and empty sour feeling and a lot of dissappointed people.

So I agree, not cool ABC, definitely not cool.

BruceH Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 12:27 PM EST

Yeah Kurtz to Heores...even if one episode...Yeah!!!!

And I echo...Not Cool ABC..not cool at all grrrr

tlc Mon, Jan 12, 2009 at 09:24 PM EST

You know people, if you just wait for the DVD sets to come out you'll get all the episodes--with the bonus of being able to watch them whenever you want. BUT for most of you this doesn't seem to be simple enough.

MK Mon, Jan 12, 2009 at 04:55 PM EST

Matt: Your argument is nullified by all the shows on the cable nets that have even less viewers than Daisies but go on year after year after year. In many cases the Big Three own these too...NBC owns Sci Fi, USA etc... Disney which owns ABC certainly owns ABC Family as well as Disney and Toon Disney among others.

My point is, it's no longer a valid excuse for cancellation. The very least ABC could do would be to post the final eps on ABC.com so loyal viewers of Daisies and Eli Stone could at least SEE THEM! They're made, they're paid for...let the people who care see them!

BSmit Mon, Jan 12, 2009 at 04:37 PM EST

Blame the idiots who watch drivel like the Bachelor. I understand the networks are in the business to make money. Pushing Daisies was a good show but I'm much more angry that the Bachelor still keeps showing up. Fess up people, who the hell is watching this crap?

Matt Mon, Jan 12, 2009 at 02:54 PM EST

I am so sick of people who blame networks for canceling unpopular shows. From what I hear, everyone who watch Pushing Daisies would fit in a high school gym. The same for Arrested Development. You people need to understand that networks are in this business to be successful. Not to lose viewers to competitor networks. If you liked a show and it was canceled because it was not very popular, I truly give you my simpathy. I've had that happen myself. But I do not blame the network for making smart business decisions.

minderbinder Mon, Jan 12, 2009 at 02:34 PM EST

Enough with the "please bring back PD!" comments - we all know there is a loyal base of loving fans, but ABC has already made up their minds, production shut down, everyone has moved on to other jobs and the sets torn down.

At this point it's too late for begging (or anything else).

jack Mon, Jan 12, 2009 at 01:57 PM EST

Yes, please bring back Pushing Daisies. It's the best show on TV right now.

Lex Mon, Jan 12, 2009 at 01:35 PM EST

"Pushing Daisies" had it's quality problems from time to time but it was just so different. Kristin Chenoweth was brilliantly cast and so much fun to watch....and who wouldn't love Emerson Cod? If we can't have any more of these great characters and absurdly beautiful storylines, just let us have the final 3, please!

Lill Mon, Jan 12, 2009 at 01:00 PM EST

Speaking of good shows by Bryan Fuller that were cancelled before all episodes were aired, is there any chance that PD Season 2 will find life on DVD, just was Fuller-penned "Wonderderfalls" did?

BHM1304 Mon, Jan 12, 2009 at 10:52 AM EST

"Heroes" is the worst sci-fi show on television - PERIOD. I would much rather have Kurtz and her lovely "sister" Ellen Greene on "Pushing Daisies" than on the boring pile of crap that "Heroes" is.

Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 08:59 AM EST

I think Pushing Daisies is an exception. It did attract viewers. The problem was the strike.

Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 08:54 AM EST

I am also really unimpressed with ABC. It's bad enough to cancel great shows (eli stone, pushing daisies). But then why anger viewers further by not even running the shows???

Show then at 2am. Show them on a friday night. Just stop pissing me off or i'll stop watching your station all together!

psb1962 Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 01:08 AM EST

abc and disney should be ashamed of themselves..just because you do not own a show does not mean you give up on it so easily (pushing daisies is a warner brothers produced series)..and why do they think we nees another ashton kutcher series..he is soooooooooo lame

Rob Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 03:46 PM EST

I'd like Fuller to bring over Lee Pace and, especially Anna Friel, too. (Not as Ned and Chuck, of course) If he could turn the show into a sort of "Pushing Heroes," that would be neat. 'Cause that's what Heroes was in the first place (minus Daisies's absurdism.)

April Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 03:05 PM EST

Just because you're mad about Pushing Daisies being canceled, which is understandable, doesn't mean you have to trash Heroes. Calm down people.

Tyler Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 02:31 PM EST

Why can't ABC just post the last three episodes of Pushing Daisies online if they don't want to air them on television? It is the least they could do for all of the loyal fans!!!

Kevin Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 01:41 PM EST

Oh, STFU Danny. Just because there are people who love PD and are sad to see it go doesn't mean you can bash them for hating on something else. We PD fans fell strongly about the show, and just because you dont doesn't give you the right to call us idiots.

Sarah Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 01:12 PM EST

This is show business, so any show that doesn't bring in viewers will be cancelled. PD just didn't appeal to as many viewers as we fans would have liked. I don't think the networks have the patience to wait for shows like PD to build an audience. It is a sad fact, but a fact none-the-less.

Of course, Bryan Fuller went to Heroes because he needed the work and he was promised more than just working on that show. He has to look out for his future, and can't spend too much time lamenting the ending of PD.

Rhonda Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 01:09 PM EST

This piece of news is like when you're a little kid and you hear the ice cream man coming down the street so you run to your mom to ask for some money and she says, "We have popsicles in the freezer." It's not the same.

Indiana Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 12:16 PM EST

This "breaking" news is the one that is finally making me remove my RSS link to Ausiello. Just too many "wow -- look at this" headlines that only lead to a story on someone signed to do a guest appearance. I need spoilers!

Veronica Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 11:26 AM EST

This may be our goodbye. Fuller Episode, Swoozie Kurtz (it would be so much fun if she shows up one eyed) Good bye Chuck, Ned, Emerson (you deserved a Nomination), Olive, Lilly, Vivian, Digby, Pigby, Alfredo....

Ant0 Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 09:47 AM EST

Come on ABC! YOU CAN'T CANCELLED PUSHING DAISIES, at least you have to air the last episodes! There is an audience, even if it's not the most of all, that can't wait for your airings. DON'T ALWAYS THINK ABOUT MONEY!

Trish Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 08:28 AM EST

I love Pushing Daisies and am really super disappointed in abc for cancelling it. They need to listen to the fans instead of making rash and stupid decisions. I enjoy watching Heroes, but it seems to be getting a little odd and not as exciting as it was in the beginning. They're all over the place with their storylines. Bring back Pushing Daisies!!

echo Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 08:07 AM EST

This is cool news. Perhaps a future HEROES flashback will give us another look at Ellen Greene...

But yay for Swoosie Kurtz working with the awesome Bryan Fuller again. :D

Sidra Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 02:29 AM EST

Why does ABC do that thing where they start shows off really well and then forget about them...? Pushing Daisies was fantastic.
and I used to love heroes but it is so confusing now, I've given up.

samantha Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 02:04 AM EST

Thanks for the news, Ausiello. I don't watch Heroes so I don't really care about this episode, but it's nice to see critics like you chide ABC about showing the last three episodes.

Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 01:54 AM EST

Most definitely not good enough. I never liked Heroes, so that makes it even worse. Pushing Daisies was the only network TV show that I watched. I have no reason to watch ABC now. So, no matter what happens, unless Pushing Daisies is brought back, ABC has lost a viewer. Anyone else wanting to bring back Pushing Daisies can protest by boycotting anything released by ABC/Disney and their affiliates. Hit them where it counts, their pockets. In a bad economy, they can't afford it. Also don't forget to send complaints to them too. Anything to bring it back. This isn't good enough, and we need to organize somehow. Jericho was brought back because the fans organized, lets do the same for Pushing Daisies.

Luisa Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 01:21 AM EST

NOT GOOD ENOUGH!

All this crap and hoopla about Bryan Fuller going back to that s***ty show has really gotten me and any respectable Pushing Daisies fan fed up. WE DON'T CARE. It will never even come CLOSE to making up for the cancellation of the best show on TV. So whatever, Ausiello. Don't even bother trying to cheer us up. There's no point.

TS Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 12:45 AM EST

ABC continues to forge ahead with sappy and weepy shows, and probably forgets that not too long ago...they were at the bottom! Keep trashing the good ones ABC 'cause you're on your way back down!

Veronica Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 12:41 AM EST

ABC, I hate you! They have a knack for picking up great shows and pulling them within a season or two. After LOST and Betty are over, I'm done with ABC... Freaks and Geeks, Daisies, Eli, Swingtown...grrrrrrrr...

patricia Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 12:24 AM EST

Why would ABC tell Fuller go to the trouble of reworking the ending of the 13th episode of Pushing Daisies so it doesn't have a cliffhanger -- in post production, no less -- if they weren't planning on airing it?????

Emma Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 12:14 AM EST

why doesn't abc simply put the final episodes online week by week? this is frustrating--i miss my favorite show!

Devon Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 11:16 PM EST

Ausiello... you are the man. i agree with you almost 100% of the time. thanks for all the info!

pameladeville Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 10:21 PM EST

ABC is not the sharpest tool in the shed. Getting rid of Pushing Daisies and keeping Wife Swap and Nanny. Reality shows beating out a very clever show doesn't make sense and then not to finish out the show for the loyal fan base is just a slap in the face to the viewers.

supermum Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 09:00 PM EST

I'll take whatever I can get. I never plan to watch a new television series again, however. Maybe the only reason reality television gets any viewers is because the more intelligent portion of the public has moved to cable due to being jerked around by the major networks. I know we have (with the exception of the few series we like that have not been cancelled there will be no major network television watching in my household). Good luck, ABC!

psb1962 Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 08:50 PM EST

nbc IS cool..abc IS still on my s#@t list..i love daisies and if i have to wait til the dvd release to see the final three i hope it is soon...abc still suxx

Russell Franzen Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 07:34 PM EST

Glad to get some sort of Daisies fix. Smart of Bryan Fuller...I will start watching Heroes as a result of this. Going to boycott ABC as well because they are either evil or stupid....possibly both.

And amen to Amber.

Phil Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 06:57 PM EST

Swoosie Kurtz is fantastic so I will definitely be watching this episode! I can't say as much for other episodes (not written by Brian Fuller) though.

Amber Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 06:54 PM EST

Oh geez, what's with all the whining? Heroes had nothing to do with PD being cancelled, so quit taking it out on the show. If this doesn't interest you, why are you even here? I loved PD too, but the ratings sucked (no accounting for taste, is there?) and it got canned. It's happened before, and it'll happen again, just get over it. If you don't like being disappointed then I suggest you stop watching television in general.

As for SK being on Heroes, it's totally awesome news. Angela's a great character, and watching them both onscreen together is going to rock, especially with Bryan writing the episode. Can't wait for this episode and for Fugitives in general.

Allison 2 Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 06:10 PM EST

Allison to other Allison. If you read the article you'll see she has nothing to do with Sylar's mom.

Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 06:09 PM EST

Love Pushing Daisies. Not even an ounce of interest in Heroes. ABC is lame for not giving us the last three epi's for some open-ended closure (yeah, it'll be a cliff hanger but at least we'll know we've seen all we were allowed to see). And I'm not a big fan of BF right now because in the interviews I read where he was offered a Heroes gig when PD could have used his support just reeked of lack of loyalty. Srsly, dude, PD was YOUR IDEA, your project, your baby. You couldn't have at least TRIED to fight for it? So ABC canceled a great show, isn't airing the final epi's and is charging full price for partial seasons on iTunes and DVD. ABC is the main reason I'm leaving all TV behind but the other networks share the blame as there is nothing good on anymore. I can't believe I of all people am saying this but, TV sucks and is a waste of time. Give me a movie where you only waste 2 hours if it sucks not 2+ years.

Allison Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 06:08 PM EST

There are so many I can't name them - how many shows became loved AFTER they we're canceled as great shows.

I mean Family Guy was brought back on the air. Audience doesn't mean it's not a good show.

minderbinder Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 05:36 PM EST

So now Swoosie has been on Pushing Daisies, LOST (as Locke's mom, no less), and now Heroes, that's a real geek trifecta.

And don't forget that Ellen Greene was on Heroes as well as Sylar's mom.

"The fact that Daisies was canceled should prove that it wasn't a good show."

Idiotic. That's like saying food at McDonalds is "better" than some other restaurant just because they sell more quantity and make more money.

Danny Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 05:28 PM EST

more heroes haters in the house. god i am so sick of hearing about pushing daisies, it was an amusing show but not worth all this sobbing, get over it people. seriously. the show was way too cutesy for its own good and heroes deserves the chance to get good again, I don't care what any of you crybabies say, Heroes is a good show and has a chance to be redeemed. Although if they are going to add her as a cast member they should keep her for more than one episode. The main problem with the show is that they can't make up their mind about Sylar whether he is a hero or a villain, its getting really annoying having him switch allegiance back and forth then killing kristen bell and adam, stupid. Daphne and Matt are probably the least interesting of all the characters but seriously all you Heroes haters go to hell and keep your crybabying to yourself.

Fatima Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 05:13 PM EST

Can we all laugh at point about the statement that said canceled=not a good show?

HAHAHAHAHAH delusion HAHAHAHA

wreet Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 05:10 PM EST

Heroes is the most entertaining show on TV, even when it sucks. I have no doubt Fuller's going to make it better.
Heroes is still better than most of the shows out there.

Kacey Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 05:09 PM EST

OK, so you think that because Bryan Fuller is going back to Heroes & Swoozie Kurtz is going to be in one epidsode, I will now start watching a show I didn't watch in the first place? Uh, no thank you. I think that I know the name of ABC's newest reality show that will be air at Pushing Daisies old time: You Can Pick your Friends, You Can Pick your Nose and you CAN Pick your Friend's Nose. Wow, can't wait!

There is no silver lining in PD being cancelled. I don't give a rat's a** about Heroes so this is like rubbing salt in the wound. I have a special place in my heart for the entire PD cast and wish them all well, but it's still sad to see them moving on.
ABC, burn in hell.
Oh, but before you die, just hurry up and show the last 3 freakin episodes. How is it helping things by not showing them? Even you, abc, don't make any money by NOT showing them.
Michael, make them show the episodes!!! haha..but you're a man with lots of pull in the industry; march over there and help us out! please?

If ABC doesn't plan to air the final Pushing Daisies episodes (or DSM episodes, for that matter), they should put them on their website already.

The fact that Daisies was canceled should prove that it wasn't a good show. I only watched one episode, because I couldn't stomache more than that. Good shows, like Heroes, stay on the air for season after season. If it's canceled, it's because the audience was too small, or the show just wasn't good enough. I don't care if they ever show the final 3 episodes of that show. Maybe if you protest the way Jericho fans did, you'll get the conclusion you were hoping for. Someone mentioned pie- so, try sending the network 50,000 pies- worked for Jericho with peanuts.

Heroes is the greatest show on Television. While season 3 was lack-luster, to say the least, I am eager to see what Fuller brings back to the show in Vol. 4. Seasons 1 and 2 were so good (IMO) that season 3 was a huge disappointment. It proves this show needs Fuller. The addition of Swoozie Kurtz could open the door for an entirely different storyline.....more deceit than we ever knew about. I will say this about Season 3- while it didn't really do much for the story, one thing it did do was secure Nathan Patrelli as the new enemy. He did a complete 180 last season, and I hope he dies in Vol. 4- can't stand him now that he's taking the opposite side. I guess my hatred for him is an indication that Season 3 was not a complete waste. I'll be tuned in 2/2/09- let's see where it ends up!
