What a Big Bang bummer.
Five months after it was announced that TV’s funniest traditional sitcom, The Big Bang Theory, had wisely upgraded the sublime Sara Gilbert from an occasional guest star to a full-fledged series regular, the former Roseanne star has practically vanished from the CBS hit. What the heck happened?
Well, I did a little digging and it turns out Gilbert is no longer a series regular! An insider tells me that the actress was bumped to recurring because producers weren’t able to generate enough story for her character, who had been paired romantically with Leonard (played by Gilbert’s former Roseanne co-star, Johnny Galecki). “They couldn’t write for her, so they changed her status to recurring,” whispers the insider. “It’s a little mystifying.”
A Big Bang spokesperson declined to comment, but a source close to the show noted that Gilbert will continue to be a presence on TBBT, adding that she’s scheduled to appear in the episode that tapes next week. “Sara has a long-standing relationship with [Big Bang exec producer] Chuck Lorre that dates back to their Roseanne days,” the source points out. “He adores her, and he will continue to use her on the show.”
My take: I’m still a little disappointed by this, but a little Sara Gilbert is better than no Sara Gilbert. You agree?

Bummer news but knowing I will get to see her every now and then is still pretty darn awesome.
i kind of found her annoying, so im glad she has less time
Well, they didn’t try too hard to incorporate her – her and Leonard’s attempt at a relationship only lasted one episode.
My husband and I have watched BBT from the first episode and have never been big fans of any of Sara Gilbert’s story lines (single exceptiong being the “physics bowl” episode where she replaced Sheldon as a team member). Strange that she never fit with Leonard because they clearly have chemistry together (a la Rosanne days).
Sara Gilbert is awesome, and I really like Leslie Winkle, so I agree, a little SG is better than no SG. Sucks they couldn’t write for her though, I don’t get it.
Too bad. Her character’s harsh, but funny, quips regarding Sheldon’s awkward geek/weird character will be missed on a regular basis. Her frequent absence will only make her presence more appreciated in future episodes.
I don’t get the love for this show. I find Two and a Half Men funnier and I hate that show.
Like the actress but it was the right choice. Her hilarious quips consisted of “dumb ass” and were a waste of screen time.
Cocaine habit?
I actually was wondering where she was, having remembered she was supposed to be a regular this year and can’t even recall when she was last on……
that explains that then!
wow – this lady has no luck with her roles. She was killed early in the second season of 24, practitcally vanished into thin air in ER and after finally becoming a regular on a hit sitcom, she gets the bump shortly after because the writers couldn’t find a story for her .. strange
Thanks for the BBT scoop!
I love her and am just glad she will be around occassionally! I am new to the show and I like it, but I don’t get the female lead/neighbor. Is she supposed to be hot? or just a random chick that the guys are associated with who is not a brainiac?
I’m kind of with the writers; her character always seemed as a recurring and I was very confused why she was made a starring cast member in the show, but had little reason to hang out with the Geek Squad on a regular basis. She was pretty funny, but it doesn’t break my heart.
So that’s what happened! I was wonder what happened to her! Drat. I was hoping for more estrogen (Stephanie maybe?)
