Maybe this time we’re really going to meet the mother on How I Met Your Mother: That ’70s Show leading lady Laura Prepon has signed on to play Ted’s once (and future) girlfriend in five episodes, sources confirm to me exclusively.
Mind you, if the October Road escapee’s character, Karen, does turn out to be our hero’s future missus, she’ll be a far cry from Sarah Chalke’s Little Miss Perfect. Prepon’s alter ego — Ted’s squeeze through high school, college and then some — is said to be as snooty as she is beautiful, and notorious for cheating on her lovers to avoid having to explain why she’s dumping them.
Thoughts? Mine are 1) This for sure sounds like a fun character for Prepon, 2) She’ll fit right in with the Mother gang, and 3) Okay, now I’ve lost count. So spill: Would you love it or hate it if the show was pulling a fast one and Prepon was the Mother-to-be? (Additional reporting by Andy Patrick)

I thought the point was he hadn’t met the mother yet. If Ted already knows this character from his past then he’s already met her and therefore she couldn’t be the mother. The show is not called How I Met Your Mother AGAIN.
Prepon’s character on October Road really bothered me. She seemed like such a square compared to her character of Donna. It will be fun to see her with the HIMYM gang, but I’m not ready to Ted to settle down yet
Love it! She will fit perfectly in with the cast, Sarah Chalke just had that awkward girlfriend vibe who can’t really hang with your friends.
It’s like my greatest TV fear that I’m not going to like the mother. I do like Laura though.
It seems like she’s almost certainly not the mother. Ted already has a history with her (so the story of how he met their mother would have taken place in High School).
Also, with the record ratings the show is pulling in, it no longer has to worry about being cancelled every year. This allows the creator to reveal the mother on their own time, which I don’t think will be anytime soon.
ugh, hate it. I like her, but not as the mother.
P.S. Barney and Robin need to be together ASAP!!
there is no way she’s the mother, it doesn’t fit the plot and she doesn’t seem at all like the right type
I Love her, I’m so excited! I agree that she’s most-likely not the mother but honestly I don’t really care who the mother is anymore.
Couldn’t her meet her now and she’s different than she was back in high school making this an entirely new meeting? Just a thought… Who knows…
Sorry, I meant “he meet her now…” in the below comment…
Eh, I don’t really like Laura Prepon. I always felt she smirked her way through her role on That 70s Show, and none of her acting felt very genuine to me. But I guess that smirky attitude will fit the character description, although I’m guessing she either has changed or will change through her relationship, so that she can be the mother.
Oh and also – bring back the red!
I don’t think she’s the mother. The creator’s said last year that they already knew who the mother was and filmed a scene (during the filming of season 2) with the kids that gave away who the mother was. I doubt this was what they had in mind. Also, they said they planned to continue the show until like 2010 or something like that, right? Why would they give the mother away so early on?
YAY! I think she’ll fit in great. She won’t be the Mother, but I’m excited! I miss That 70s Show…
Barney&Robin 4evs! please?
I like this show, I really do, and part of me will be sad when it ends. A much bigger part of me, however, just wants Ted to find the damn mother already! Prepon’s character will be his 589,746,998th girlfriend, or something like that. Also, ENOUGH with the Ted and Robin stuff. Just let it go! Like I said, I like the show, but it’s okay for a fan to get frustrated.
meg, I agree – I also fear that I won’t like the mother when she’s revealed. That’s why I we shouldn’t see her until the very end of the show…Ted meeting her should literally be the last thing that happens. That way, we’ve all met her, but we don’t know her enough for the audience to end up not liking her for whatever reason.
I’m not sure what I think about Laura Prepon. I thought she was a bad actress on October Road. Then again, just about everything about that show was bad. Maybe on a better show with better writing, I’ll like her more.
Ted would never be attracted to a damn dirty scientologist.
I agree with Meg. I’m terrified I won’t like the mother. Someone tried to tell me Victoria was the mother and I was like NOOO!!! Hated that idea. I love Laura, it’ll be great to see her back on TV, but I don’t think she’s the mother anymore than I thought Britney Spears was the mother.

Yay! I luved her and that 70s show.. I think she will fit in with the gang.. luv the show.. don’t care who the mother is.. and I don’t think she will be the mother..
Ausiello, I am dissapointed. You hated October Road as much as any other sentient being, but you are happy that HIMYM would sully itself with the likes of Laura Prepon’s so-called acting. My eyes are burning in anticipation of the horrors to come.
I have to agree with Amy. I’ve never seen October Road, but I was never really impressed with her on That ’70s Show… I don’t mind her exactly, but I definitely don’t think she should be the mother.. (And it sounds like she won’t..) Then again, the only girlfriend of Ted’s that I’ve ever really liked is Victoria. As others said, I wouldn’t mind it if we didn’t meet the mother until the end….

Great. The least charismatic actor in sitcom history paired with the least charismatic actress!
Laura Prepon as the Mother? Highly doubtful. That said, I really hope the entire last season (and this hopefully won’t be for several seasons) is about Ted and the Mother’s meeting and courtship. I’d love for the season premiere of the last season to end with Ted meeting someone and Future Ted saying, “And kids, that’s how I met your mother…I just didn’t know it yet.” I’d be really disappointed if the show ended with him meeting the mother. Amy, you have a point about not liking the Mother…But really, don’t you want to know her? Find out why she and Ted clicked? I’d also love for the Mother to have NONE of the traits Ted is looking for- loves dogs, Otis Redding, etc. He’s looking for the perfect someone, and I always thought the show was about finding the someone you’re perfect with.
The one thing I really hate about HIMYM is when they pause and Bob Saget says something like “But it wasn’t” or “But we’ll get to that later.” or whatever. It’s annoying. We get it. You’re not going to tell us who the mother is so I’ve stopped caring. I like Laura Prepon but I doubt she’s the Mom. I still give this show a chance because I love NPH and Jason Segel but I wish it was better.

exactly
I don’t think she’ll be the mother. I don’t think that will be revealed until the final season.
I just hope that at this point she’s able to stop laughing at the jokes as she’s hearing them or trying to say them. She did that all the time on That 70s Show and it annoyed the hell out of me. Nothing throws an audience member out of the story like a cast member who can’t stop laughing throughout scenes.
She was totally rude to me one day so boo. Ted, you can do better.
I never found her to be that good of an actress. It always seemed like she was reading her lines, rather than having an actual dialouge with her co-stars. I am not looking forward to this arc.
