'Heroes' Exclusive: Sylar's Dad is Lionel Luthor!

Dec 10, 2008, 04:02 PM | by Michael Ausiello

Categories: Heroes

Ausielloheroesquinto_l To restore the super to Heroes, the show is going -- but of course -- to Smallville!

Sources confirm to me exclusively that the struggling NBC drama has tapped John Glover, a.k.a. Lex Luthor's dad, Lionel, to play Sylar's father.

"When Sylar meets his father, he's going to see a path ahead of him that he doesn't want to take," reveals a Heroes insider. "He has a lot more in common with his father than he realized."

The Tony award winner, who recently booked an arc on Brothers & Sisters as a love interest for Ron Rifkin's Saul, will turn up towards the end of Heroes' forthcoming "Fugitives" chapter.

Do you see the family resemblance?

lol Glover goes from one evil villain's dad to another evil villain's dad. I really miss him on Smallville, it's just not the same without the mysterious Lionel Luthor stirring things up with his half good guy half bad guy personality. Hopefully he'll be just as great on Heroes as he was on Smallville!

jasonjkyle Sun, Dec 21, 2008 at 03:50 PM EST

is the family resemblance that they are both gay men?

lorna Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 06:26 PM EST

used to watch sville but this is great news, john glover is great at playing villians

Smallville is my favorite so I miss him as Lionel, but I love Heroes too! Great casting!

John Glover was chilling on "Brimstone" as the devil, awesome on Smallville as the devil's dad (Yes, Lex I mean you, since the vision of the future has you wiping out the future), and should be very impressive as ...well...the devil's dad.

I smell typecasting.

Anyway, I am the 21st viewer of Smallville.

Heroes has been on a roll.

I was stunned in seeing Arthur Petrelli, who apparently has more powers than a Magic the Gathering card from the older sets, with powers numbering in the hundreds, beaten by the Haitian, a powerless Peter with a handgun, and Sylar with a little push of telekinesis to get the bullet into Arthur's stunned forehead.

His look of surprise was pricless, as a character with the mojo of Galactis is felled by high velocity bullet.

This made me laugh out loud, A LOT. Especially the Magic Cards remark. Golden

Ashley Sat, Dec 13, 2008 at 01:45 AM EST

Heroes truly is trying to redeem itself. John will be an excellent addition to the cast and I can't wait to see screen time between him and Zach Quinto. Excellent casting choice.

KATIE Fri, Dec 12, 2008 at 10:34 PM EST

oooh how exciting!! I love John Glover! I definitely miss him on Smallville, but IMO this is the next best thing. He must be proud playing father to two of the greatest villians of all time hahaha

I enjoy Heroes and Smallville. Heroes has been a bit convoluted of late and I think this will be remedied. Smallville, well I actually quit watching it for a few seasons. It was really boring the tar out of me. Then Lex left and I thought I wasn't going to watch anymore as he was my favorite thing about the show. I will say that I am enjoying have Justin back and Sam is great as Doomsday.

John Glover will be a superb addition to the Heroes cast. I've been reading up on what the plans are for Heroes and I really feel that everyone will return watching with open arms.

tlc Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 09:40 PM EST

Ladies and Gentlemen (And because of the tone of the posts I use both of these terms VERY loosely) could we all just SHUT UP about ripping off story lines?!?!? EVERY televison show has ripped off SOMEBODY at some point in time. AND, people, you are confusing an actor with a character. I'm glad to see that John Glover's working; I've enjoyed his roles in the past but HE IS NOT LIONEL LUTHOR ANY MORE THAN JACK COLEMAN IS HRG OR THE FIRST ROLE I EVER SAW HIM IN: STEVEN CARRINGTON ON DYNASY BACK IN THE 1980S. (He has aged VERY well and matured as an actor quite well as well)

Some of the current storylines on both HEROES and SMALLVILLE echo/duplicate storylines I've read in various comics over nearly three decades of collecting--but they have vastly different characters and different outcomes. AS they should since they are not the same material.

Or to quote Kipling "There are a hundred and sixty ways/ of constructing tribal lays/ and every single one of them is RIGHT!"

Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 02:44 PM EST

No *John Glover* is the openly gay one not Zach (who played a gay guy but is not one-uh as far as I know)

Leigh Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 01:10 PM EST

Jim -- where did you hear that Zachary Quinto is "openly gay"?

MK Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 12:29 PM EST

His absence on Smallville has been keenly felt. Glad we'll have a chance to see him on TV again. He's wonderful.

john glover! salisbury, MD represent!

van Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 10:40 AM EST

The only good thing from Smellville (aside from Michael Rosenbaum) was John Glover, so good call. I still think is too little, too late. Heroes has become as insipid and ridiculous as that CW "thing".

BabyDee Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 09:37 AM EST

I think it's a brilliant addition to the cast. John Glover is a fantastic actor, I have no doubt that he will bring his A-Game to the table. I hope, however, that he gets decent storylines...'Heroes' has been lacking in them recently.

Rebecca Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 06:52 AM EST

Love John Glover and think he'd be an excellent addition to the Heroes cast!

So glad to see him get such a great opportunity!

Snarf Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 05:58 AM EST

Papa Luther is now Papa Sylar?
Awesome.

Farhan Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 02:29 AM EST

A great casting news, with fuller back on board and john glover coming in, I can already see that the show regrets and is ready to change, thanks Barack Obama for brnging change that seems to be the motto of everything lately, and all for smallville haters, this is a heroes news and if u have a smallville based comment go on Kryptonsite.com and I warn u to not go agaisnt this show cuz rite now this show is at it's very best and u don't anna get insulted by the fans 4.77m of them LOL. Hope heroes becomes the best again wish u good luck

Veronica Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 02:15 AM EST

I really love the idea of John Glover playing a role in Heroes. He's an a amazing actor and I think he's gonna give very interesting moments to the show. Great choice indeed.

claudia Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 01:56 AM EST

Smallville is better than Heroes??? are you crazy? the only reason Smallville has survived so long is because it's the least crappy of the crap shows on CW.

All in all...I'm not thrilled about this new development. but we'll see how it goes. If Grunny likes it, I guess I can deal heh.

And yes, Heroes has been pretty freakin awesome the past few weeks. Sylar wins at life.

David Thu, Dec 11, 2008 at 01:20 AM EST

Well as one of those twenty people who watch Smallville I have to say that this is a great move. For those of you unfamiliar with Glover's character on Smallville should take a look and then re comment. Problem is that those who don't like Smallville prejudice their opinion of Glover based solely on their opinion of Smallville, which incidentally love it or hate it that's your opinion, and I respect that. The problem with those that apply that same opinion to an individual actor solely on their dislike of a show in general do so blindly, and without merit. John Glover's character on Smallville was one of the best things about the show. He, as Lionel Luthor, made his son Lex Luthor look like a preschool aid, and schooled the new generation on what it takes to play a villain. Absolutely amazing actor that will not only be a great edition, but if allowed to play the character to the degree that he did Lionel Luthor on Smallville, then he will elevate the show greatly. Great choice, very excited to hear the news and again if loosed and given that chance to show his skills well you won't be disappointed. Take care.

Peace To All

two of the whiniest people ever to be online. The fact that they always post one after the other makes me wonder if they are the same whiny person.

darrin Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 10:49 PM EST

smallville watched by 20 people huh? that's the dumbest thing i've ever seen anyone post here so congrats on your stupidity. "heroes" will be lucky to last eight seasons like "smallville" is currently doing - and doing successfully. look at the ratings lately buddy. also - there are several people behind the scenes of "heroes" that have come from behind the scenes of "smallville" so if you think "smallville" sucks than apparently you think "heroes" does too

RedRidingHood Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 09:05 PM EST

Now that's what I'm talking about! It's great to see Lionel back where he belongs: fathering the baddest of the bad.

Aaron Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 08:48 PM EST

Seriously?
A day in the life of someone involved with Heroes..

Jeph- hey mike what did you think about us turning Sylar from good to bad to good to bad to good to bad to good and than to bad again in our first 12 episodes this season?
Mike- Jeph it was so brilliant, I was watching the show and I was like "OMG this is so unexpected"
Jeph- thanks, all of us here are so impressed by are awesome writing this year.
Mike- you guys should be, there has been twist after twist this season but who cares if it screwed up previous seasons
Jeph- I know who cares? fans of our show are to stupid to remember previous seasons
Mike- true dat
Jeph- SHHHH, Mike be quiet, I just got a brilliant idea
Mike- What?
Jeph- lets introduce Sylars real dad this year!!
Mike- OMG Awesome but who should play him?
Jeph- lets get the guy who played the dad of the most iconic villains of all time Lex Luthor on Smallville and cast him as the dad of our shows villain"
Mike- we're so original
Jeph- I know, were the best

Captain Awesome Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 08:47 PM EST

Heres hoping he rivals Christopher Eccleston (Claude) as best guest star. Kristen Bell gets most attractive.

John Jay Concerned Film Maker Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 08:41 PM EST

Heroes totally ripped off Tarantino for casting Robert Forster. Not to mention Gilmore Girls for their blatant use of Milo Ventimiglia. I guess we can't cast anyone in our films anymore, we don't want to risk ripping off the last movie they were in.

Jim Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 08:26 PM EST

I think its great! two out gay actors playing father and son!..

I've been enjoying the Villains story arc, but I agree that sometimes there is a bit too much going on.. back to basics is great!

James Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 08:01 PM EST

MP I agree with you 100%. So unoriginal and so lame

MP Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 07:58 PM EST

Ugh! Heroes, get your own ideas! How freaking unoriginal! "Hey, let's get the guy that played Lex Luthor's dad!" So, so lame.

Adam Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 07:55 PM EST

Mike, just don't listen to these stupid guys that doesn't even know anything.

Justin Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 07:53 PM EST

I didn't like it!

Heroes sucks! Smallville is much better!

Mike Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 07:33 PM EST

GP, saying that no one watches Smallville is so laughable... Heroes is in it's 3rd season and it is only getting 3-3.5 million more viewers than Smallville this year and Smallville is in it's 8th season!

Tina Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 07:30 PM EST

Holy **** how many more things is Heroes gonna rip off from smallville

GP Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 07:22 PM EST

OK. Sorry for the repost. Weird

GP Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 07:21 PM EST

Hmmm. Someone deleted my comment. What does that say about this site?
Here it is agaon: NOBODY except the 20 people on here watches Smallville. That tiny little show is not in Heroes' league.

GP Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 07:11 PM EST

It cracks me up how you people think that people actually watch Smallville. I'm guessing most of the viewers hves posted here--all 20 of them. Smallville isn't even in the same category with Heroes--even at it's lamest.

angelactress23 Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 07:03 PM EST

Awesome! I loved John Glover on Smallville, his scenes with Lex were da bomb! I can't wait to see what he does with Zachary Quinto. However, is this casting a little actor stereotype much?

Don't get me wrong, Sylar is my fav. character (other then Nathen), mostly because of the complexity and genuine emotion the actor brings to the screen. But the destruction of the redemption arc 2 weeks ago has completely ruined a character who has proved to be NOT Static. I hope that this bombshell means that they have a good plan for his charector. But personally, I would've loved to watch Baby Noah redeem his father from Sylar then what we are getting. I think the show needs to either bring the little Noah story back, OR as someone said above, put Sylar 6 meet under with his beloved Elle.

Then again with Star Trek coming out next May, I doubt we will see Sylar much more before Zachary Quinto takes his talent to bigger, and better things.

Alan Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 06:58 PM EST

Pathetic!!!
I love John Glover but I dont care how you look at it Heroes only hired him because he played Lex Luthors father! and they want him to bring in fans of Smallville. it is disgusting stunt casting. the show will do anything to get viewers

Kristen Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 06:32 PM EST

I'm 2 weeks behind on Heroes so don't come down on me too hard for this if the answer is already out there...did Angela Petrelli have an affair with Sylars dad? I thought Arthur was the father. But I was confused about how old Sylar is supposed to be younger than Nathan but older than Peter - so how could Nathan not realized his mom had a baby then it disappeared? I love this show and it makes me really happy they are attempting to re-vamp it.

Elle P. Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 06:32 PM EST

Ugh. another reason to not come back. i quit heroes two eps ago and im not coming back. theres too many OLD MEN BADA$$ES and not enough strong female characters.
im bored and done.

Jp Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 06:16 PM EST

Can't Sylar just go away, altogether?!?! What am I saying - I don't even care. If the next episode isn't truly fantastic, I give up on this lame show.

Oreka Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 05:49 PM EST

""Smallville" was "Macbeth" compared to "Heroes"."

I still don't understand how anyone can possibly think that, and still be serious.

Heroes has some lacks, it's a new show, which committed some mistakes, but i don't doubt any second that it will fix its problems.

Laura Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 05:47 PM EST

Awesome, I can't wait!

Duffi Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 05:44 PM EST

oh this is too good! I flove John Glover!!!

jessica Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 05:26 PM EST

Dude if you don't like spoilers why are you even visiting this site. I mean that what he's here for.

G-Dog Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 05:23 PM EST

Dude, can you PLEASE stop giving spoilers in your freakin headlines!?! I am ready to quit coming to this site because I am so sick of you spoiling stuff. Having Tankredi come back on Prison Break could have been a really cool surprise if you wouldn't have given it away here first. Just say you know who it is and let us go to the article to find out. You don't have to say it all and have a pic in the headline.

Ali Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 05:16 PM EST

Eyebrows! Grunny was right! Best. Casting!

Marty Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 04:58 PM EST

Good another add to Heroes... his character better be nothing like Lionel Luthor cause if I recall he was just so damn impossible to kill. I think Heroes have enough of those!

Jenny Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 04:53 PM EST

I LOVE John Glover. The episode of Smallville where he and Clark trade places was classic! Glad he's joining the cast, even if it's for a short period of time.

I do think the show needs to trim the fat (Parkman, Hiro, Tracey, I'm looking at you), but at least when they add new characters, the actors have been quality (Kristen Bell, David Anders, and now John Glover!).

Krystal Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 04:51 PM EST

WOO! I LOVE John Glover! Been a fan of his since Brimstone, and have missed him since he left Smallville.

bkwurm1 Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 04:49 PM EST

Sylar, son of Lionel Luthor. Oooh, that's going to be good stuff. JG wasn't known as the Magnificent Bastard on Smallville for nothing. He can ooze evil in the most civil manner. Also, watch for his crazy eyes when he goes off the deep end.

Jeffrey Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 04:43 PM EST

"Smallville" was "Macbeth" compared to "Heroes": classic! Hilarious and one thousand percent true!

Sharlin Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 04:38 PM EST

I personally vote for Sylar to follow Elle in the afterlife...

Sharlin Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 04:38 PM EST

So who is his mom? Angela? So Angela cheated on Arthur?

M Weyer Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 04:34 PM EST

And a great season gets even better. And no, this is not sarcasm, I'm actually liking the show this year.

Dr. No Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 04:31 PM EST

This show is such a mess right now, they need to blow it up and start over. So many unnecessary plot lines and characters. Get a grip !

Rachel Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 04:31 PM EST

YES! The M.B. lives!!!! I'm excited to see John Glover bring Syler's Daddy issues to light! Good move...

Joel Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 04:28 PM EST

Hmm, that would explain Sylar, having Lionel Luthor as his father. Lionel doesn't have good kids, does he?

Bryan Pierre Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 04:28 PM EST

Let's just pray the show gets better. I really do pray the show gets better...Seriously...

guen Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 04:27 PM EST

he'd better be a one-timer or only or for a short arc. for god's sake, we just got rid of a bunch of stupid people- the one thing this show absolutely does NOT need is new characters.

Anna Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 04:24 PM EST

I don't care who plays his father just as long as they please stop reading comic books, looking into the future, and time traveling. There is absolutely no reason to be invested in these characters, because nobody really dies, nothing is fixed, and the past/present/future is all out of sorts.

Mal Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 04:17 PM EST

that's awesome! John Glover ROCKS!

James Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 04:15 PM EST

Struggling, my ASS. Ausiello, have you even been watching? The last few weeks have been amazing.

Any and all Sylar storylines are welcome, since he is by far the best and most entertaining character on the show...especially since the writers have been giving HRG the cold shoulder lately.

BHM1304 Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 04:13 PM EST

I love John Glover - but anything would be better than having to appear on "Heroes". "Heroes" just sucks so bad. "Smallville" was "Macbeth" compared to "Heroes".

Mary Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 04:11 PM EST

Oh, that's awesome and slightly hilarious!
