'Office' Exclusive: Jack Black invades Dunder Mifflin

Dec 15, 2008, 11:58 AM | by Michael Ausiello

Categories: The Office

Jackblack_lThe Office's post-Super Bowl episode just scored the equivalent of a touchdown with a two-point conversion: Jack Black has signed on to guest star in the hour-long episode, sources confirm to me exclusively.

The hitcom's producers are keeping the specifics of Black's stint under lock and key, but a just-released NBC press release says this of his role: "Some of the office workers try to secretly watch a bootlegged Hollywood movie during the workday. The movie stars Jack Black and other notable Hollywood actors." (I initially reported that he would not be playing himself in the episode. Sorry about that. My Office mole has since been reprimanded.)

As previously scooped by TV Week, the Feb. 1 episode, which will air immediately following NBC's Super Bowl telecast, will revolve around the staff of Dunder Mifflin roasting Michael (Steve Carell).

Amen kevin, you called it.

Shalmanezzer Mon, Feb 2, 2009 at 10:41 PM EST

You can't really criticize Jack Black for not being funny anymore, and then end your sentence with the phrase, "Buh Bye."

asdfasdfasdfasdf Mon, Feb 2, 2009 at 03:29 PM EST

All you retards crying before you even see how he is in the episode.

He doesn't enter the office at all, he is simply stared in a fake movie that Andy downloaded illegally, and that subplot was actually quite funny.

NO Mon, Jan 19, 2009 at 08:51 PM EST

It's not broken. Don't fix. Jack Black, Jessica Alba... seriously? wtf. they are gonna ruin the perfection that is the office

Kevin Thu, Dec 18, 2008 at 05:23 PM EST

"hey, check out that shark over there! let's jump it!"

Clarence Beeks Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 04:52 PM EST

I was referring to the warped and ignorant view of "reality" that the term "through a glass darkly" means, and it's originally from the Bible, not Ingmar Bergman. And I didn't say it, I typed it. And jb still sucks. Don't miss your short bus.

Becki Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 10:26 AM EST

Did you just say "through the glass darkly"? Do you even know what that means? And are you seriously going to diss one of the 2 kings? What are you thinking? The only thing I love more that JB in a good Bergman film and you managed to insult both in one fell swoop. You know what you got? F+.

Judy Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 12:18 AM EST

Normally I would cringe at and/or pass over this piece of news, but, since only recently watching Tropic Thunder for the very first time, I can say I'm ecstatic! I loved him in that movie. "Don't judge me!!!"

Kevin Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 11:35 PM EST

Wow, this Super Bowl ep is REALLY gonna blow...

Paige Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 10:40 PM EST

Oh god, I hope he sings

dr zoid Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 07:32 PM EST

Noooooooooooo!!!! Why? Seriously...why?

Marina Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 06:41 PM EST

I can't wait, he is sooooo funny.

WS Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 05:33 PM EST

from the futon critic: In one plot of the special post Super Bowl episode of "The Office," some of the office workers try to secretly watch a bootlegged Hollywood movie during the workday. The movie stars Jack Black and other notable Hollywood actors.

Clarence Beeks Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 05:28 PM EST

In what twisted, through a glass darkly, alternate universe is this a good idea? jb's sell by date was last DECADE. not.funny.anymore.buh.bye.

C Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 05:19 PM EST

I second the Tropic Thunder endorsements. I would like to add High Fidelity to the mix too. This is a highly underated movie in which Jack Black is incredible. School of Rock is good too.

Kate Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 05:13 PM EST

Because I have faith in the cleverness of the writers, I bet Jack Black might just be the the restaurant manager at the restaurant that is holding Michael's roast who will be just this cool bit more than a cameo

Helen Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 05:11 PM EST

I think it's fantastic he's guesting
on the Office. He can be gross at times
but he's a funny guy and will fit well.
I would love it if he turned out to be
Creed's long lost lovechild. They can
do a duet.

MAJOR PAIN? Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 05:09 PM EST

"Sailor Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 12:55 PM EST

Maybe Jan's baby daddy?!"

I think that this would be a great way to bring him in for an episode and then get him out. And anyone that does not think Jay Bells is not funny... please do yourself a favor and rent Tropic Thunder!!!

Jack Black sucks. He isn't funny, and he's a complete tool. Why would such a great show lower itself?

Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 05:00 PM EST

Jack Black sucks. He isn't funny, and he's a complete tool. Why would such a great show lower itself?

Dodi Goodman Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 04:57 PM EST

He is the father of Jan's baby.

Sara Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 04:54 PM EST

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!! LOVE IT!

paul Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 04:48 PM EST

Jack Black isn't a good actor but I still like him alot. He will fit in well on the office

Ben Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 04:46 PM EST

My prediction is that Jack is some former lover to Oscar, or he may be one of Andy's old singing buds.

matt Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 04:29 PM EST

jack black sucks at everything he does

Danny Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 04:24 PM EST

the british version sucks!

Sean Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 04:18 PM EST

I can see JB as Andy's brother-- he's got that clever, annoyingly playful way with words down.

Neillfilm Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 04:17 PM EST

Okay, I don't usually do this, but everyone hating on JB is an IDIOT!!! The man is a comic genius. You don't have to agree with me, but he is an A list actor for a reason.

Teresa Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 04:13 PM EST

OMG!!! can“t wait!!

Gwenn Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 03:49 PM EST

Oscar's new boyfriend!

jules Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 03:30 PM EST

Perhaps he can inject some life back into The Office. It has been pretty lame this season...I don't find any of the characters likeable, or the least bit realistic anymore!

Jen Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 03:21 PM EST

"mvb Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 02:21 PM EST

the BBC version is a much better show. A bit darker but much funnier."

Eh, British humor is a lot different than American. I personally like our version better.

donner Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 02:52 PM EST

he seems PERFECT to play Dwight's crazy brother...can't wait!!

jen Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 02:47 PM EST

SWEET! i love jack black, i love the office. let the post-super bowl hilarity ensue.

Josh Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 02:33 PM EST

Quit blaming the show-stunt casting with big stars usually comes from the network. Sean Hayes even said in an article after W&G ended that the pressure to put big name stars on the show came from NBC, even said to quote him on it.

Gary Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 02:26 PM EST

When Will and Grace used to pull these celebrity stunts it was neither cute nor funny (with the exception of Minnie Driver's character) and I am sad to see The Office go down this route. You are smarter than that Dunder Miflin - shame on you!

mvb Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 02:21 PM EST

the BBC version is a much better show. A bit darker but much funnier.

Nathan Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 02:10 PM EST

Jack is at his best when he is not the lead role, so as long as the episode doesn't put to much focus on him it should go well.

Liddy Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 02:05 PM EST

I don't have a problem with Jack Black, but didn't Greg Daniels turn down Carol Burnette to play Michael's mom because she was too recognizable? I would think Jack is in the same boat (?).

Oh well, I hope the episode does well and pulls in more viewers.

Shelley Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 01:50 PM EST

I have to say this could be good!! Oh, and the Christmas Party episode just killed me! Poor Meredith. Brings the lols!

blah Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 01:44 PM EST

Yet another sign this show has jumped the shark: bringing in wacky B-list actors to make a "special" appearance. I need a time machine to take me back to S2 when the show was actually good.

John Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 01:41 PM EST

The "that's what she said" friend is Todd Packer, already played by David Koechner (who we haven't seen in a while, hmmm).

Anyway, seeing as how Office has such a specific style and that Black is a pretty solid actor, I'm not worried about him fitting in (look how well Amy Adams did in her appearances).

Marie Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 01:31 PM EST

This could potentially be the greatest episode. I chuckled a tiny bit thinking of Jack Black in an episode....then I laughed out loud when it said it was a roast!! I can not bleeping wait!!!!

Mikey M Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 01:28 PM EST

An hour long episode? Those are usually the most unfunny. Jack Black is not my cup of tea but the football crowd will probably love him.

HellsBells Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 01:16 PM EST

I say he should get hired on in the warehouse, have kooky adventures, then get his butt canned.

Greg Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 01:05 PM EST

Can anyone remember the last time Jack Black was funny?

genifur Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 01:03 PM EST

I can't wait to see how they work this out!

Sailor Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 12:55 PM EST

Maybe Jan's baby daddy?!

krisa Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 12:54 PM EST

may be he'll be that always heard, never seen friend of michael's - the "that's what she said" guy

Matt Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 12:32 PM EST

They decide to go with a name. Okay. But...Jack Black?! Ugh.

Mike Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 12:19 PM EST

I'll be shocked if he's actually funny...

Tom Ragu Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 12:19 PM EST

Maybe he's the blue jean bandit!?!

Jamn Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 12:11 PM EST

I'm not sure if Jack Black really fits in the Office universe & milieu all that well, but I'm willing to give him the benefit of a doubt.

Allison Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 12:06 PM EST

He's part of the Shrute clan!! Maybe he's Mos's brother!

silver Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 12:05 PM EST

Nice! Can't wait for this ep. Will be great to see The Office getting such huge exposure.

Kyle Mon, Dec 15, 2008 at 12:03 PM EST

That is really exciting. Awesome.
