'Grey's Anatomy' Exclusive: Eric Stoltz lands killer role

Categories: Grey's Anatomy

Ericstoltz_lHere's some news that should comfort Izzie "I have sex with ghosts" Stevens: This January, she won't be the only crazy person roaming the halls of Seattle Grace.

Sources confirm to me exclusively that Eric Stoltz has been cast as a serial killer in need of immediate medical attention on Grey's Anatomy. The actor and future star of Sci Fi's Caprica, who proved himself to be a believable sociopath in Pulp Fiction and Killing Zoe, is on board for three episodes.

I'm told Stoltz' story, which takes a surprising turn around the second episode, will raise a myriad of thorny ethical questions for McDreamy and Co.

Stoltz didn't have to travel far for his audition: He directed several episodes of Grey's this season, including the Nov. 13 installment, "These Ties That Bind."

In other Grey's news, did you know that Jessica Capshaw is scrubbing in as a pediatric surgeon named Arizona Roberts for a multi-episode arc? If not, you just scored a bonus scoop. Congrats!

Tyler Durden Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 12:57 PM EST

Capshaw is supposed to be Callie's new love interest since they kind of de-gayed Melissa George.

Anyhow, I'm loving Stoltz as a serial killer and had no idea he's been directing. Good for him. Nice to have him around again.

Bring Hahn back!

The show is clearly lacking luster. Ms. Rhimes promises not to mess up with Mer and Der and now there is nothing to their story line. I thought for sure we were going to discover some interesting info from the journals of the late Dr. Grey.
Great to see Eric Stoltz, love love love him like a crazy person. But a serial killer, come on. That is so ER (paging noah wyle and kelli martin).
This whole Izzie story line, I don't know...it is a suspension of belief, but I do agree with ABC, time to tie it up and get to the punch line. There are plenty of shows out there that are being cancelled or on the verge of being and they are carrying better story lines currently than Great Ole' Greys.

Brandi Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 10:40 AM EST

Greys used to be my favorite show. Last season was ok and this season has been terrible! Bring back the old Grey's.. The kind that has Mer and Der, give Izz and Alex a chance!, don't let George leave, and make the episodes where Lexie and the new annoying Sadie are in the background! This show needs to be about the main characters and not the annoying interns!

Berked Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 12:00 AM EST

I cannot stand Mary McDonnell's character. Totally unbelievable.
With regard to Izzie & Denny -- its a waste of good acting talent on a stupid story line. You're losing me as a part of your audience unless you reverse this trend.

sonny K Tue, Dec 9, 2008 at 10:59 PM EST

Despite the Michael Myers-esque Denny return (the writers should be embarrassed. does tv have razzies?)grey's has the best casting of guest stars out of all these shows...although they botched Mary McDonnell character...over the tippity-top. Now only if this serial killer would kill Izzy, George...and Denny during his hospital stay.

Anja Sun, Dec 7, 2008 at 12:54 PM EST

Wow!
I just read the news and I'm seriously excited.
I've always been crazy about Eric Stoltz, but him on Grey's?! It just doesn't get better then this!
Can't wait!

Alexa Sat, Dec 6, 2008 at 03:13 PM EST

what is wrong with you people?? this is a hospital THERE ARE PATIENTS they kind of need guest stars every episode!! and just because he's here for more than one does not mean they'll add him as a freaking series regular..!

michelle Fri, Dec 5, 2008 at 11:24 AM EST

This is great news. I think he's a wonderful actor, and I always thought a nice guy should play Ted Bundy, because he was apparently nice enough to fool everyone for years. I'm looking forward to this one. And it WOULD be great if he killed off Denny finally!

Larue Fri, Dec 5, 2008 at 05:53 AM EST

Serial Killer?? Been there...done that....SEVERAL times on 'ER.'

Flop Anatomy Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 11:08 PM EST

Some of you will eat up any crap Grey's writers toss at you. This show is dead.

Carol Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 06:18 PM EST

Jessica Capshaw???!!! REALLY????! Another Meredith wanna be??? Who is only slightly more annoying than Jennifer Westfeldt (another guest arc-er)?????!!! What is with the casting on this show???!

arial Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 06:09 PM EST

So, will Eric Stoltz (Daniel Graystone of Caprica) overlap with
Mary McDonnell (BSG President Laura Roslin and maybe-far out speculation, I know-DG "offspring")??

Hemkit Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 04:18 PM EST

Oh, and maybe he will end up killing George which could fit the blind item.

Hemkit Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 04:17 PM EST

Uh, Mike? How was he a sociopath in Pulp Fiction? He was a drug dealer, but I didn't see any sociopathic tendencies...

Marty Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 02:02 PM EST

This should be fun to watch! A serial killer!@ I'm glad to see new kinds of storylines.

007 Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 12:46 PM EST

Perfect! Hopefully he will kill Izzie and put the whole Denny thing out of its misery!

Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 12:37 PM EST

A serial killer? Seriously? SERIOUSLY? Can whoever hijacked the show this season please give it back? Keep your plot-driven drivel to yourself and stop ruining this once great show.

gale in phoenix Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 11:54 AM EST

grey's has officially jumped the shark ......

Lisa Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 11:30 AM EST

Hollywood is where they come up with these crazy names. Thou in the hospital she'll be called Dr Roberts so we won't have to be assualted with that ridiculous name the whole show. I hope with her on the show that we get to see more pediatrics cases I think it will bring back that feel of when Addison was on. *fingers crossed* lol

Shay Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 11:24 AM EST

I'm looking forward to this storyline. And I like the fact that they are bringing on more different specialities of doctors. It breaks up the monotomy of just brain tumors and emergency stories. I loved when Addy was on and we got stories on pregnant moms so It's about time we see the Peds side of the hospital.

Lisa Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 11:17 AM EST

'Arizona Roberts?' Seriously, where do they come up with these weird-a** character names!

Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 11:16 AM EST

This guy is an actor that is coming on for 3 episodes to play a serial killer. He's not a series regular and most male serial killers look like the guy down the street so I don't think its such a BIG stretch for him to play. Hell this is a TV SHOW not a documentary following real doctors its going to have characters doing crap that would not go on in a real hospital. Everybody needs to get a grip and watch the show for ENTERTAINMENT

TW Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 10:05 AM EST

Maybe we'll get lucky and he'll kill off the entire cast.

Yogi Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 10:01 AM EST

This should make things a little more interesting around the halls of SGH.I wonder if he's gonna kill anyone. Remember when the schizophrenic guy killed Lucy and stabbed Carter on ER? I wonder if it's gonna be similar to that.

Tim Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 09:53 AM EST

Wait they cast Eric Stoltz who's going to star in the BSG spin-off Caprica and put him in an episode that's title is a direct rip off of the BSG episode last season called "The Ties that Bind" wow, pathetic.

Shaun Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 09:40 AM EST

Feeling ok about Eric Stoltz. Hopefully, he will kill someone to bring some real drama back to the show. Nice to see Ms. Capshaw back in action, although what's up with the name? Arizona Roberts sounds like a porn star...

Nita Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 09:25 AM EST

Ugh. Grey's went off the deep end long ago, but has officially sunk to the bottom of the ocean. What happened to its thoughtful, complex storylines? Now it's all sensationalistic...icicles, sadie cutting into herself, flooding, etc. And I totally can't buy Eric as a serial killer, not with Mask and Some Kind of Wonderful and Memphis Belle on his resume

DocCovington Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 09:18 AM EST

Oh. My. God.

They are so desperate in need of good writing that they are starting to steal story ideas off of GA fan fiction?

*LOL* That’s rich.

P.S. I remember Stoltz well from the 80's. I especially liked his performance in that Cher movie, "Mask".

AM Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 07:56 AM EST

Hope he's going to kill -- Lexie and Sadie and, while he's at it, Dr. Webber for hiring them in the first place.

No need to hire more talent to replace Webber, Bailey may simply move up the ladder.

I have a feeling that's a storyline specifically written to give Owen Hunt something to do, something Cristina can then admire him for. Argh.

He is going to kill excessive staff, isn't he? He better.

mary m. Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 06:46 AM EST

um, hello? how you interpreted his performance in pulp fiction as that of a sociopath is beyond me. he was a lazy, block-headed drug dealer, and nothing more.

Stefan Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 06:41 AM EST

Omg people .. STFU ... i mean - do you think they should just operate on themselves or what? THEY NEED PATIENTS. all this "omg mooore people an greys?" is really making me sick

V Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 01:01 AM EST

seriously? more people on grey's?

dee Wed, Dec 3, 2008 at 11:44 PM EST

so then don't watch.
seriously tho. im pumped for this storyline. its about time grey's had something crazy like this. can't wait

Debbie Wed, Dec 3, 2008 at 11:24 PM EST

Seriously more guest stars...
This show is out of control and getting more and more ridiculous each week. It makes no sense. Let's fire a great actress and then bring on additional cast members and guest stars. Wow. Not sure if it is worth watching anymore.

Virginia Wed, Dec 3, 2008 at 11:15 PM EST

Great he does a killer sociopath...literarily! It will be great to see him go crazy at Grey's! When did you say it will be?

meg Wed, Dec 3, 2008 at 10:42 PM EST

Little Women! Thank you, I was staring at his picture and could not place him. I knew I liked him and now I realize it's because I associate him with Christian Bale.

Wed, Dec 3, 2008 at 10:01 PM EST

He was believable in Pulp Fiction, but definitely not a sociopath.

Erin Wed, Dec 3, 2008 at 09:58 PM EST

God, I love Eric Stoltz! He should be good to watch (although I have a hard time picturing him as a serial killer since my mind immediately conjures up Little Women and House of Mirth)

Lauren Wed, Dec 3, 2008 at 09:24 PM EST

I wish it were Esai Morales. Just for the lols.

kim Wed, Dec 3, 2008 at 08:59 PM EST

a serial killer? really? because this show totally needs more unnecessary drama. hey, maybe he'll kill izzie. or george. who wants to bet someone will be held hostage? put in mortal danger?

matt Wed, Dec 3, 2008 at 08:38 PM EST

Love Jessica Capshaw! She was great on The Practice as the character Jamie Stringer!

Jacob Wed, Dec 3, 2008 at 08:18 PM EST

This news depresses me. This just smells of another writing stunt to melodramatize Seattle Grace some more. I like Eric Stoltz, but as a serial killer? Puh-lease. This show is about a helicopter amputation away from becoming ER...

Sheri Wed, Dec 3, 2008 at 08:12 PM EST

Hey, maybe since he's a serial killer he can kill Denny for good and make the silliness stop once and for all.

Katie Wed, Dec 3, 2008 at 07:56 PM EST

A surprising turn? Will he kill someone? Because I think that would be fun.

The Tooth Fairy Wed, Dec 3, 2008 at 07:38 PM EST

Sigh. More anonymous "Grey's Anatomy" news. Is the well running dry over there?

Corinne Wed, Dec 3, 2008 at 07:36 PM EST

Man, that is some kind of wonderful!!

Heh. I'll watch.

Bren Wed, Dec 3, 2008 at 07:28 PM EST

as long as denny is around what is the point? this show is lower than low

Miss B Wed, Dec 3, 2008 at 07:12 PM EST

Hopefully this arc will help bring Grey's back up to par. Eric Stoltz is great! I've been a fan of his ever since Some Kind of Wonderful.
