Come February, Sam may be wishing she had climbed aboard that booby-trapped ambulance after all.
Sources confirm to me exclusively that Shannon Woodward, best known as Eddie Izzard and Minnie Driver’s burgeoning scam artist daughter on The Riches, is joining ER in the recurring role of Kelly, estranged younger sister of Linda Cardellini’s Sam.
Per an ER insider, Kelly shows up on her sib’s doorstep with some horrifying news: she wants to move their ailing mother to Chicago so Sam can care for her for a change. Wait, it gets worse. Fifteen years ago, Mom kicked a then-pregnant Sam out of the house with nothing but the clothes on her back, and the two haven’t spoken since.
Again, death via exploding ambulance? Not looking so bad!

I think they should have cast Alona Tal as Sam’s sister. She played Meg on Veronica Mars, and I think she looks quite a bit like Linda Cardellini.
Um, the writers need to go back and the episodes when Sam’s mother comes to the ER and lectures Alex about his behavior. This was a few years ago when Alex was being played by a different actor. I hate it when writers can’t keep track of the history!
It wasn’t her mother that showed up a few seasons past. It was her grandmother.
That wasn’t her mother…it was her Grandmother Gracie.
I think the woman who “lectures Alex about his behavior” was either Sam’s aunt or grandmother…
Wow, the resemblence is amazing!
I watched The Riches and Shannon was an excellent actress; you really cared about her character. So I think she’ll be a great addition to ER. But poor Sam; her life is never easy.
ER has numerous continuity problems with this storyline. When Sam’s grandmother showed up in Season 13, she told Sam that her mother had just gotten married and that she was in jail for identity theft.
