Exclusive: CBS eyes 'NCIS' spin-off

Categories: NCIS

Ncisspinoff_l_2 In a move that will surprise only the brainless, NCIS‘ odds-defying ratings surge this season has
prompted CBS to quietly begin developing a spin-off, sources confirm to
me exclusively.

Although a spokesperson for the hit procedural declined to comment, my
industry moles reveal that a new crop of naval sleuths will likely be
introduced in an episode of NCIS later this season and launched into
their own show as early as next fall.

"It’s still in the early stages," maintains an insider, who says no
final decisions have been made about the premise or the setting.

The NCIS offshoot will likely put on hold CBS’ long-gestating Criminal Minds spin-off.

For more on NCIS‘ franchise expansion, pick up next week’s issue of EW, on sale
this Friday. In the meantime, initial reactions are being accepted in
the comments section below!

Are they going to call it NCIS Miami????

  • ks

Isn’t NCIS a spin off of JAG? Don’t mess with my NCIS!! the only show on TV I watch anymore. LOL on the Miami post

    • charlene Freitag

Don’t mess with NCIS. It’s the ONLY show I watch. I love all the characters, writers, directors, editor. Best show I have ever seen. Intellectual, funny and always a surprise ending. Keep everyone.Chemistry is great.

  • Viv

These are kind of things that ruin good shows. I can only hope they don’t ship off Tony to head the new unit. The chemistry of this group is at the root of it’s success. Don’t kill the golden goose CBS.

  • Stefan

well – NBC should really bite their ass. first they cancel JAG which turned out to be a hit on CBS, where it got a spin off which was even more successfull than the mothership – and will get a spinoff of its own *gg*

  • David4

Is CBS renaming itself Crap Brain-dead Spinoffs?

  • Anonymous

    HAHA nice. A spin-off of a spin-off. I miss JAG.

  • Paula

They say that imitation is the finest form of flattery but NCIS has a good thing right now–if they take some of the present actors and give them another show–lookout–it may mess up the chemistry of both shows. This is an ensemble show–

  • Nicole

I can see why they’d want to spin off of a succesful show. After all they do have three CSI shows top rated every week.
Whether or not it’s a good idea, time will tell. Hopefully they don’t break up the core group.

  • Daisy

Doubt it can be close to the current NCIS (which is great this season), but I will give it a chance, as long as they won’t mess with the chemistry of this cast. The current team should not be split!
But I still hope the CM/NCIS will come as well. That would be awesome!

  • Dragen

Stop telling people to pick up EW. Some of your readers are international, thusly can’t buy it.
Put your idiotic Blind Items there instead, and give us the news we’re here for.

  • Ashley

PLEASE, PLEASE, if anyone at CBS reads this, don’t mess NCIS. ya’ll are freaking me out with all these changes (CSI LV) I love NCIS still, please don’t ruin it.

  • Katie

Awesome idea, I love NCIS! I’m anxious to hear more about the spin-off and who they choose for the new team.

  • Krystal

Interesting. I still want my CM spinoff. But the beauty of NCIS is, you would have never known it was a JAG spinoff unless you saw the backdoor pilot episode. Only one actor from JAG has guested, and that was the second ep of the first season.

  • Becky

to the one about buying the magazine: It’s most likely the company that tells MA he needs to say “buy the mag!” Plus, the magazine’s his paycheck.

  • Jennf

PLEASE NO!!!!! Why would you do that.It wont be the same show CBS.The reason NCIS gets the ratings it does is because of who is on the show. Not that it says NCIS in the title.Dont be stupid and ruin another franchise like CSI:Miami did. So please rethink this. I will guarantee it will never get the ratings that the one and only NCIS does.

  • KDawg

Had her character not retired, I would have been interested in seeing an Army CID spin-off with Lt. Col. Mann. What about the USAF OSI? There are sorts of investigative acronyms out there to explore!!!!

  • SerenityBlue

As soon as I read the headline, I thought ‘Please tell me they’re giving Fornell his own show!!!!’. That’s the spinoff I’ve wanted from almost the first time that character appeared on NCIS. An FBI-based equivalent to NCIS focusing on a Fornell led team. I don’t care that CBS already has a FBI-based shows in Without A Trace, if they’ve got room for the three CSI’s they’ve got room for two FBI shows. Of course I wouldn’t mind a show focusing on the Army Equivalent of NCIS either. Nor would I mind another NCIS team based show, just so long as they don’t poach from this one’s core group of characters for the new show’s cast.

  • ecsmac

which and how many of Bellisarius’s relatives will star???

  • KDawg

Krystal – It does seem a bit odd that we never saw more use of JAG people considering who NCIS is typically investigating (and needing prosecuted). With that said, did JAG ever show any NCIS agents doing any investigations or testifying?

  • My Thoughts

I love NCIS, but a spinoff worries me. Would we lose any current team members to the new show? Would a spinoff dilute the fan base of the current show? Best ever ratings this season, my vote is to not mess with any spinoff.

  • KDawg

    SerenityBlue – Don’t forget about Numb3rs & Criminal Minds. They’re FBI too.

  • DanOregon

Maybe it will be DCIS – where investigators go after defense contractors whose faulty work has gotten soldiers killed.
    OR maybe NCIS:CSI.

  • Kat

I’m glad NCIS is finally getting the respect the show deserves. Solid writing, humor, good acting and lots of fun. While House continues to bleed the 25+ viewers and only the teenagers stay, NCIS is giving intelligent adult viewers an alternative.
Kudos to Shane Brennan Donald Bellisario. I hope they don’t mess with the core of NCIS but spin-off another, equally well-written show.

  • DanOregon

An even better idea would be to take some cast members from The Unit, Criminal Minds, Without a Trace, The 11th Hour, NCIS, The Mentalist, Cold Case, all three CSIs, and Numb3rs and turn them into an ass-kicking force of nature working for Homeland Security.

  • tony

good idea! as long as they keep the team together and make this with completely new characters!

  • j2talk

what about a spin off for Joe Spano as Sr. FBI Agent T.C. Fornell?!?!?!?!
I am surprised this hasn’t been done already….

  • Rob P

There should only be one NCIS. if its not broke don’t fix it.

  • SerenityBlue

Yikes, KDawg. How did I manage to forget them when they’re two more favorites?! Thanks for reminding me. I guess I can blame the fact that it’s Tuesday so my brain is focused on NCIS, The Mentalist (CBI), and Without A Trace.

  • XK

While I think CSI: Miami is drek, it’s hard to argue that it in any way ruined the CSI franchise. Certainly, both it and CSI: LV continue to pull in fantastic ratings.
With that in mind, as long as they don’t pull any of the current cast members into the spinoff, (and it sounds from the article that they’ll simply be using NCIS to introduce the *new* characters that will be in the spinoff), I don’t see this as a bad thing for NCIS.

  • kel

Oh! I would so watch a spin off, if they include Derek-CIA creepy dude and Fornell!!! I love those two.
