'Heroes' Exclusive: 'Aliens in America' Star Goes Bad

Danbyrd_l Talk about casting against type.

Dan Byrd, best known for his roles as sensitive, wholesome teens on Aliens in America and Clubhouse, is about to tap into his inner Henry Evans. Sources confirm to me exclusively that Byrd has been cast on Heroes in the recurring role of David, a dark and twisted kid who tells lies easily and has a cruel streak. Word is he'll be a possible apprentice to Sylar (Zachary Quinto).

Byrd is committed to appearing in at least three episodes during Heroes' forthcoming "Volume 4: Fugitives" arc.

This marks the second major piece of casting for the "Fugitives" volume. Last week, my frenemy at E! broke the news that Damages' Zeljko Ivanek was coming on board as the Hunter.

Looks like I may have ID'd his first quarry.

Five ways to fix the show

I like Dan Byrd in A Cinderalla Story and I wouldn't think he could play a bad role until now. I bet though Sylar will continue his evil ways and it would be interesting to see him against Nathan. I like the show, it has an extroadinary cast and I hope the show continues after the 4th season.

I'm glad to see Dan Byrd getting so much work. First Greek, now Heroes. RIP Aliens in America. popculturecurmudgeon.blogspot.com

The problem with Heroes is not the Actors. You can have a big cast. You can have lots of drama. You can have SF mixed with Fantasy and Romance. You can have complex plots. But you can't have half-wit ploting. Heroes constantly has plot holes that are HUGE, and basically ignored.

When the Fantasy fights your ability to suspend your disbelieve, it is not helping the story.

Make it whole, make it consistant, and fill it with action that makes sense.

What is going on with you EW people? You're negative buzz about the show has gotten slanderous! I'm cancelling my subscription! I've had enough of your negative scrutiny and nitpicking.

Dara Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 09:49 PM EST

This show is hopeless, or at least this season is. It's like a diseased tree: it can't get better if the rotted branch remains. This show desperately needs pruning, and tar placed on the stump to prevent excess sap production! In other words: the current writers need to be cut off, and the show needs to be refocused around the core cast of characters. No more random new person who detracts from developing the original (and superior) characters. (Excepting Sylar, that is--he should have died in the first season finale!) Honestly, I'm not watching this season. After the dismal two-hour premiere, I've chosen to get all of my information second-hand from a friend who is possibly masochistic.

Juat because David is a trouble maker doesn't mean that Sylar being his mentor makes him evil rather it could mean that he's trying to reform him.

Still, if Sylar does go bad it doesn't make the story pointless cause 1)the volume is partially about the temptations of evil. Sylar being bad again reinforces that. 2)
The point could be that they are who they are and can't change, which sucks if it involves evil but is also symbolic of the fact that if someone was born normal they shouldn't have been given powers and if someone was born with powers they should embrace them.

He's a FANTASTIC actor, I loved him on Aliens in America. This might make me actually start watching Heroes again.

SinkingShip Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 07:20 PM EST

(continuing my prior post)

...pointless

SinkingShip Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 06:27 PM EST

The worst part about this info is it makes it sound like Sylar is still the big bad next season...which if it is the case will make all of Season 3 to date, and the 2nd most intriguing Heroe's storyline yet (the best is the original "save the cheerleader save the world"--until about the 2nd to last episode anyway and 2nd Sylar's redemption)

To Kate Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 06:22 PM EST

Fugitives is the name for the fourth 'volume', which starts in the winter. We are now in 'Villains', volume three.

Matt Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 05:02 PM EST

How about this...all of the "core characters" sit in a room and converse about their situations and never come into contact with anyone else. Of course they're going to so what's with all of the bitching about new characters? It wasn't an in the much loved season one for characters like Ted, Claude, etc to have multi episode arcs and then be gone but suddenly it is because the show can do no right?

This character reportedly is just for a few episodes. Nothing to complain about imo.

Kate Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 04:13 PM EST

I'm confused. We are in the Villains arc, right? Is Fugitives next season? There are too many storylines, I was kind of hoping the Villians arc would pare down the cast.

Lisa Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 03:56 PM EST

why isn't the updated episode of private practice ever shown they don't
do much with talking about that show to much just got hooked because of
officer Kevin Nelson.

dave-o Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 02:54 PM EST

the only thing that makes this palatable is if they actually kill (dead kill, not coming back, finito, game over, adios) some of the current characters first.

Cassie Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 02:48 PM EST

Seriously? This is how Kring will "fix" season 4? Say he'll focus on core characters and then go and add two more (so far!), making a total of 459581 characters on this show. This show does not need new characters. It needs new writers.

Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 02:46 PM EST

I hope his character is used to kill off half the cast. there's way to many people on that show!

TVTIM Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 02:37 PM EST

Dan Byrd rules! Heroes does not. Good to see him get some high-profile work...

Josh Emerson Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 02:33 PM EST

I still enjoy Heroes (Kristen Bell next week!), but I agree that they don't need any other characters, especially not this guy. He was annoying on Aliens in America and I doubt he'll be any better here. Although he can't be as bad as Mohinder and Maya. Kill them off already!!!

1234 Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 02:28 PM EST

So, no redemption for Sylar? I knew it was b*llshit.

And the fact that he's still alive in volume 4 is exactly why this show is sucking so much now.

ccross Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 02:22 PM EST

No, No, and no again. Absolutely not. I abjectly refuse to countenance any new characters to this already overburned show. I'm sorry, but for every new character they introduce they should whack another one or two to balance things out--say, any holder of the idiot ball, and there's quite a few. Please, just focus on the characters we already have, or did we learn nothing from the Blunder Twins? Seriously, we can get a petition of protest going on here? NO NEW CHARACTERS!

Kelly Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 02:03 PM EST

Yeah, this is a poor substitute for Adam! The writers don't know what to do with the characters they do have; why the h*ll add more?!

Auntiemm Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 01:52 PM EST

Enough with all the characters and the shifting timelines and plots. I want to be entertained NOT confused. The show simply no longer holds my interest.

Nose Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 01:49 PM EST

Good God. You kill off Adam and now this?! My patience is really being tried.

mk Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 01:34 PM EST

Dear Heroes producers and writers, Rethink and refocus. Get this show back on track.

Jeez, Louise Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 12:46 PM EST

Too many characters, too many plotlines.
Enough already!

Daniel Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 11:24 AM EST

Am I the only one who's been dying for the release of "Aliens in America" on DVD? I missed a good chunk of episodes, and they definitely have great rewatchability. Plus, I'd love to hear cast commentaries. Where's the petition at??

Jefferson Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 11:13 AM EST

Sweet Jeebus! Focus on the characters you already have and stop this need of adding 9,000 people!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, little frustrated

Mel Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 11:07 AM EST

Yay! I miss Aliens in America and with the actor who played Raja being reported as getting many gigs, I was hoping Justin could get some too. And he was so great on Greek this week. This sounds great- even if Heroes has a million characters.

Amelie Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 11:04 AM EST

Can't they just stop adding new characters? It doesn't do the show any good, at all.
