Even a fake psychic could’ve seen this coming: CBS has inched closer to granting a full-season order to its freshman smash The Mentalist, ordering six additional scripts for the Simon Baker-led drama.
The move comes as The Mentalist has emerged as this season’s only surefire hit. In its first two outings, the show has won its time slot with an average 15.4 million viewers.
An official back-nine order, which would bring The Mentalist’s season 1 episode total to 22, could come as early as this week. Meanwhile, I’m still on the fence about whether to season-pass this thing. Please submit your pro/con arguments below.

I like the show overall but it does annoy me that he never explains his observations. Like in the pilot he says something like “I can tell from your demeanor that your father was a football coach.” Uhh…really? Explain, please. I guess this may not bother everyone but I’m interested in body language and unconscious signs and clues we give off about ourselves. I would find this show doubly entertaining were he to explain how he knows those things!
So, how many episodes we could expect? (together)
I LOVE Simon Baker and I enjoy the mysterious way he solves these situations. I don’t care for the negative nancy lady cop though; she’s always cutting him down. I enjoy the show and am happy to have it renewed!
I, too, am a total Simon Baker fangirl. But I was actually kinda bored silly watching this. Maybe if I just zone out and drool at Simon I could watch this better.
I’m with SarahK. It seems like he knows things that even the most intuitive person in the world would never be able to pick up on. If they explained how he came to his conclusions it would be fine. But at this point it just seems ridiculous and not even slightly believable.
I think Psych is better and should be getting the recognition. this show is just a copy of Psych except not funny, and the guy admits that he’s just really observant.
and in psych, you know why shawn knows everything-his dad trained him.
Sorry, I’m a big fan of Simon Baker but I prefer FRINGE at that time on FOX. As a show Fringe has caught my eye more than The mentalist
It was a lot better than I expected and I happen to have a DVR slot open for it, so I’ve decided to keep it in my rotation so I have something to watch on the weekends. It certainly doesn’t crack my top tier, but it’s a well-made show that keeps my attention.
If they could casually re-cast Robin Tunney’s character, I think I’d like it a whole lot more, but I’m doubting that’s going to happen. How such a wet-blanket got cast in the first place is beyond me. She’s bland and boring in every role she takes. Note to Hollywood: quit offering!
Depends how full your Tivo is. It’s enjoyable but hasn’t really distinguished itself from other CBS procedurals yet…
This is the best new show of the season. Baker and Tunney have an awesome chemistry, that’s something other new shows can only dream of. I love the quirky humor too! This one definitely deserves a full-season pick-up and it fits extremely well with NCIS.
This show has been a treat thus far and I’m glad to see it picked up for more episodes.
The writing and humour of the show surprised me and I’ll definitely keep watching. I think Robin Tunney’s character (and much of the secondary cast) just need a few more episodes to develop. I think the dynamic between the team has potential, but it just hasn’t had enough time to come together.
I love this show. Simon Baker’s character is so freaking charming that I would watch him read the telephone book. And initially, I did not like the female lead, but she’s growing on me.
Hello. Firstly, sorry for my english. I have question about first season. It’s mean, that 1st season will count nine episodes?
I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this show. I just hope they don’t have Simon Baker solving ALL the murders, and the CBI Investigators as merely his entourage. But I’m in for the count right now!
I really love this show. Its actually got some humor/sarcasm in there which I love…and I love looking at Simon Baker…lets keep this show on!
I agree with Jenna V., Psych-copy alert!
Please ax the show.
I don’t watch cop shows and won’t be watching The Mentalist either, but I did tune in for one episode just to see whether it was any good. It was entertaining in a pleasant, unobtrusive way, and Simon Baker is very charming and likeable. The little grin he has when he’s “outsmarting” people, like the sheriff he continuously beat in rock-paper-scissors, is more telling of his character than any dialogue could be. I can understand why it’s a hit.
It’s an okay show, but it is a blatant ripoff of Physc (without Gus)and without the wackiness.
I tunned in because of Simon Baker and really enjoyed it. Robin Tunney kind of annoys me but she grew on me the second episode.
And actually, Psych is one of my favorite shows but to me anyway they are completely different.
Psych….blah, blah, blah. Clearly this show attracted a different (and larger) demographic. It has a strong cast and it’s funny. I’m glad that it’s been picked up and I hope they order a full season soon.
the Mentalist is a great new show, and we’re very happy to hear more episodes have been ordered. it is about time a new show gets a real chance, tired of great shows only lasting 4 episodes because early viewership isn’t there such as the great-short lived new amsterdam.
I’d rather watch FRINGE on FOX and watch The Mentalist later.
I like Mentalist. We all need to be as aware of people and events in our daily lives. I like Simon’s character having such a deep affection and observation for children and their feelings to tragic events in their lives.
Love this show! Simon Baker is just so, beautiful . . .
I am actually very disappointed in Fringe. It surely doesn’t deserve all the hype it gets.
It’s a decent show…
and 5 times better than most of the
existing shows out now…..
I’ve been watching Fringe with my husband, then going upstairs to watch the DVRed The Mentalist afterwards. I have enjoyed it so far – not the best of the best, but good enough to actually sit and watch versus just deleting it or fast-forwarding through it.
I like the show. I really like Simon Baker. Good lord in heaven with the Psych! Okay already. Simon’s character can be a little snarky, I think that will need toning down. Week after week it will get old. It would be helpful if once in a while, not always, his methods are explained/revealed. Two episodes and I’m beginning to think: how convenient. Too much, however, is a little to Scooby Doo (read: Psych). Robin Tunney… strong female character always means bad attitude and stone-faced. I agree with the person who said to quit hiring her. She was more watchable in the interviews about the show.
The Mentalist is a cheap imitation of Psych. I’ll watch the later and leave the former to fans of Simon Baker.
