'Ghost Whisperer' Boss Speaks Out on Killer Plot: "We Would Never Betray Our Audience!"

Sep 19, 2008, 10:20 AM | by Michael Ausiello

Ghostwhisperer_l

Sometimes I don't know my own strength: My little story from two weeks ago about the (stop reading now, spoilerphobes!) impending death of Jennifer Love Hewitt's Ghost Whisperer hubby has sparked the kind of fiery backlash that would wipe the smile off even Casper's face. Who knew? Okay, I did! (That's why I wrote it. Duh.) Less prepared were the show's spoiler-wary producers, who now find themselves in the unusual position of doing damage control on a plot twist they didn't want revealed in the first place. In this exclusive interview, Whisperer's executive-producing team of P.K. Simonds, Ian Sander, and Kim Moses set the record straight about "the bomb" they're dropping this November, and why they're confident it'll have fans swooning, not fuming.

Ausiello: Let's start with the basic question: What's going to happen to Jim this season?
Simonds:
I'll try to be a little bit coy but not too coy. What we said from the beginning of the season is this is something that we've been thinking about and planning for a long time, and the show has been dropping clues and hints for quite a long time. There's been a lot of Internet speculation about what's going to happen, and some of it's right. But what a lot of people don't understand, what a lot of people have been getting wrong, is why we're doing it. Number one, what we're doing is very big and we're very excited about it creatively, but not because it's going to get a momentary burst of ratings; we believe it will thrill our audience in a lot of different ways, and reconnect them to the show, and sort of intensify the bond they feel between themselves and our characters. Our show is sometimes procedural in nature in that Melinda meets new people every week and helps them with their problems. But the show has not always been as much about her life and her relationships and her problems. What we're trying to do is this season is do an overall arc or mythology which is entirely about Melinda and her relationships. It's also a way of kind of bringing together all the strands of the show, because it is a show, let's face it, that deals with death. And the reason the audience loves the show so much is that we find ways to deal with death that are honest; we're not changing anything where that’s concerned. We are going to confront our main characters with death in an intense and personal way, but we're going to find the real point of the storytelling. It's not who or what or when, really, it's about what comes next. And I think a really important thing for the audience to remember is that this is also a show about love. Love between human beings and how powerful and eternal it is. This all began a long time ago as a conversation about how do we make this show even more romantic than it already is. A lot of people feel like the relationship between Jim and Melinda is a wonderful and almost too perfect relationship, and we felt that way too. So we wanted to kind of shake things up.
Moses: And also explore some ghost rules, but still stay true to the ghost rules that were set up in the beginning.

Ausiello: When does this story start to unfold?
Simonds:
The bomb is going go off in November. It's not a literal bomb, but it’s going to feel like one. The repercussions are going to carry forward throughout the entire season.
Sander: This bombshell is part of the mythology and raising the stakes on the mythology. What I believe we're also saying is that this is not the endgame. It is, in fact, part of, a new beginning of a mythology that we think will become exciting and build over the course of the season. The show will also deliver on what the audience has come to love and expect, and that is Melinda still will be dealing with ghosts, still dealing with their issues and unfinished business. There will be closure at the end of each episode and satisfaction at the end of each episode while she performs that heroic task. In addition to that, we will have that personal mythology that folds back on her.
Moses: In season 1 the mythology was the spirit world is getting stronger. Then in season 2, the veil between the living and the dead is getting thinner, and we continued that into season 3. And the mythology this year is that love transcends death.

Ausiello: A lot of fans are saying that a big reason they tune in is for the Jim-Melinda relationship. Obviously, they're worried that killing him off will screw with that.
Simonds:
We're not going to confirm or deny anything, and I apologize because we're all professionals and that seems silly. But we can't do that. Because if you do that, there are a number of people who are going to use that as an excuse not to watch. And we want people to watch, because the whole point of this is the journey. It's not about knowing what happens or what's going to happen; it's about experiencing it. And we want people to experience that. What I will say is that what the audience cares about is the exact same thing we care about, and we would never do anything to betray our audience or the investment that they have in those characters and that relationship. If there's one thing they don't have to worry about, it's that ultimately that won’t be taken away.

Ausiello: The skeptics out there are saying this story is essentially a ratings stunt.
Moses:
It's definitely not a stunt.
Sander: We've all tried those -- a big stunt that gives you a lot of flash, and when the dust settles, you're left with a lot less than you had before. We would never let that happen to this show. It’s too valuable and too important to us to play games with. It’s really not about that.

Ausiello: There's also a theory floating around that perhaps this idea was born out of David Conrad's desire to have more to do on the show.
Simonds:
We have an embarrassment of riches on this show in terms of our cast. We always want to find ways to use those actors in new and interesting ways, so that was, of course, part of our thinking. None of them have ever complained to us about what we asked them to do, but, of course, all artists ever want to do is something new. I can only assume that they were and are thrilled whenever we can give them new kinds of challenges.
Sander: I'm directing the current episode, and they not only take those challenges, they're running with them. Anybody who's been underused who's getting used more is absolutely relishing it and stepping up. It's been really great to watch.

Ausiello: Are you concerned at all about the "jumping the shark" factor?
Simonds:
For me, jumping the shark is when you change the rules to the show -- somehow it's harder to believe in, or impossible to believe in.
Sander: If the audience feels betrayed with what they believe up until that point, then you run that risk, so, in that sense, we were concerned about it. But we have no concern whether that is actually going to happen. People just need to watch, and if they watch, I can pretty much guarantee that they will be really satisfied with the experience. The show for us has certain rules, and certain sacred trusts with the audience in terms of what we give them every week and the way the world works. None of those rules are broken and none of those trusts are broken. We take that very seriously.
Simonds: The audience is not going to feel betrayed or in any way disappointed as they're watching this show.

Now it's your turn, GW fans: Does this game-changing twist have you more or less spooked now that you've heard from the show's creative team? Got ideas on how you'd like to see this particular Ghost story unfold? Sound off below! I guarantee you TPTB will be reading every word.

we the fans must not be considered whn the writers write such crap storylines.Jim was the only reason to watch and to buy the dvds but not anymore unbelievably utter rubbish...

d jordan Tue, Jun 23, 2009 at 04:13 PM EST

you have totaly ruined the show with this really crappy storyline.Jim was by far the best part of tuning in each week and the reason i brought the dvds but not anymore;hope you writers are pleased cuz your fans are not and we play a big part of ytour success.....

Sam23 Sun, Apr 26, 2009 at 08:59 AM EST

I hated losing Jim and cringed at how he was brought back. It finally got back to normal, sort of, when he snapped to and remembered who he is. Those were some painful shows for me and took a long time. I almost quit watching.
Finally back to normal, and now what! They're adding a baby from the body of the dead Jim! This is too much.
I like Jamie, but I miss the prof.
They had a winning formula, but are trying to make it into New Coke.
I don't like the complications of Jim and Melinda's relationship now. That was fixing something that wasn't broke.

John Fri, Mar 13, 2009 at 11:50 PM EST

Thats it.So now you have to use 2 actors for 1 part.Thats how you bring Jim back. This is so lame.Oh well, half a loaf is better than none.

Miller Tue, Mar 3, 2009 at 09:21 PM EST

I now watch the show to see how the writers will get out of this predicament. Dream sequence has been done. Melinda fesses up to Jim/Sam that she sees spirits. What will Jim's spirit do now? This plot line goes nowhere fast and does a great disservice to what Melinda and Jim shared.

Larry Molter Sun, Mar 1, 2009 at 10:23 AM EST

I think the new plot line is a bust. What was wrong with leaving Jim as he was? Why did that detective fire into the house when he didn't have a clear shot? Why didn't he call for backup? Don't the writers watch 'Cops' to see how these hostage situations are really handled? Anyway, the show is too weird now. I'm ok with the whole ghost whisperer premise because I believe in ghosts, but the body habitation is too zombie-like. Please get back on track. Soon.

RICA Sun, Mar 1, 2009 at 06:20 AM EST

the thing about it is the ratings were still #1 every single week, even until last night's episode, why do they have to be so desperate? it's like they're "jumping the shark", which is what shows do when ratings are dropping, but ghost whisperer was and still is #1 on friday nights with 12 million viewers, it's like the producers are the instigators of their own "shark jump"since the ratings weren't even dropping anyway, JAMIE KENNEDY IS RUINING THE SHOW, HE IS A HORRIBLE ACTOR, last night's episode, he said a line that should've been like a quick witted line that was supposed to be comical (it was the "criminologist" story he was explaining to Jim on the Feb 28 episode), and delivered it like it was a soap opera, HORRIBLE, another talented actor would've realized that the line was supposed to be ironic and delivered with a different pathos, my GOD HE'S RUINING THE SHOW WITH HIS BAD ACTING!!!!!

Barbara Frady-Scranton Fri, Feb 27, 2009 at 08:45 PM EST

I am ready to quit watching the show. It really has been ruined by this dumb plot.

SG Sun, Feb 22, 2009 at 09:01 AM EST

I too have watched this show from the beginning and kept watching in part because of the loving relationship between Jim and Melinda. While the "it was a bad dream" idea is old hat, something like this needs to be done to save the show. Jim needs to return and so does Professor Payne who added an edge to the show that it's missing now. There's so much to enjoy about this series, writers please fix the mistakes and give us back the characters we enjoy watching so much.

Armand Sun, Feb 15, 2009 at 04:56 PM EST

it's insaine what they did to jim. i'm a dutch viewer. and i'm really mad. he and melinda were the back bone of everything. they kept it all together. now that is lost. my drive of watching GW is also gone. WRITERS!!! please make this story as a bad dream and let Jim be the father of melinda's baby

JOHN Sat, Feb 14, 2009 at 12:13 AM EST

SORRY, STORYLINE STILL SUCKS.EITHER KILL OFF JIM OR BRING HIM BACK. IM NOT EVEN INTERESTED IN THE STORYLINE ANYMORE.

Phil Mon, Feb 9, 2009 at 06:08 PM EST

The GW writers and producer(s) need to actually watch the first season to see where they got so ridiculously off base. I'd like to remind them that the concept for GW (or any series) isn't believable or strong enough to hold its own without being strongly character driven. Somehow between season one (strong, believable, and character driven)and season three (full of holes and dead ends), the writers managed to turn Jim into a weak, whupped husband and Melinda into a sanctimonious, self centered, my way or the highway, and unlikable glycerin factory. They killed off Andrea, and blew off the professor, killed Jim and thus, with the exception of Delia and Ned, erased their best characters (really slow clapping). Brilliant! Since Mel fell asleep at Jim's bedside at Mercy Hospital, I suggest GW turn the 4th season tripe into a mere dream of Mel's ending in her waking up, Jim alive, and Mel humbled and enlightened. Any other way will have GW stuck in that underground church in Grandview

The plot is horrible and the shows make absolutely no sense whatsoever now. Haven't watched it in awhile but tried tonight and I kept feeling like I had missed out on the first hour of it.
I won't watch it anymore - it is an insult to our senses. Jumped the shark? Hell, it SANK the damn thing!!!

Loretta Tue, Feb 3, 2009 at 03:41 PM EST

I didn't read all the posts, but the consensus seems to be: this was a really, really stupid idea and I think it will be the demise of the show unless something is done soon. It may already be too late. But I guess they'll just bring it back as some other show. I won't know because I stopped watching after the episode where Jim went into someone else's body. Maybe it is time to end it. It appears the writers have run out of material that makes any sense.

Sandy Fri, Jan 30, 2009 at 09:32 PM EST

I have always the loved the relationship of Melinda and Jim. He is always to supportive and romantic and treats Melinda like a queen---what every woman wants! Even though Jim is still on the show, it's like he really isn't. The glimpse we get every once in a while of Sam, who is no where as good looking as Jim, makes me realize that Jim is dead and buried. Sam's parents didn't get to morn the death of their son. To everyone who knows Melinda, it must appear like she didn't mourn her husband's death at all. I'm just so confused! Please just make this storyline go away like a bad dream!

JGM Wed, Jan 28, 2009 at 01:06 PM EST

(Spoilers...)

I'm still in shock that the producers/writers think this was a "lovely," "romantic," "amazing" idea. A long-time fan, I stopped watching this show the very minute that ghost Jim entered Sam's body. It makes Melinda a hypocrite ("you must always cross over, you can't stay here!"), Jim selfish (Sam's fiance gets dumped rather than finding closure through his actual death), and goes against GW canon (bodies decay, even after possession). The PTB's reasoning for this storyline is ridiculous (wanting to treat the audience to Jim and Melinda's romance); could have been done SO many other ways, so much better, and much more within the universe and feel of the show. I'm also shocked so many people have fallen for this "romance." Sad.

Mindy Wed, Jan 28, 2009 at 12:32 PM EST

If the writers are really reading every comment left, then I have something to say. Along with everyone else. I terribly miss Jim on the show. Andrea is already gone, no need to bring her up. But, you could bring back Payne. Payne could've been in on it. As a story line idea, and just my mere thoughts. Payne left to go on a trip, although he didn't really leave. He stayed behind and was watching everyone. On the last season they showed everyone standing in a line with one person missing a shadow. When he saw that, he was concerned, and had to look over Melinda, so he stayed back and has been hiding out somewhere, under cover. As far as how he was connected to Jim's death episode? I'm not sure. Your the writers, you'll have to think of that on your own. But I gave you something else to work on instead of the coma idea. Which is also a good one. Please bring Jim and Payne back to the show. Even if for just one episode.

Kari Tue, Jan 27, 2009 at 10:22 AM EST

I hate the new story line so much. If they don't bring Jim back, then I too will stop watching the show. I loved the relationship between Melinda and Jim and it was one of the key reasons I tuned in each week. Whoever thought up this story line and thought it would work should be fired. It isn't working, it doesn't make any sense, so do the right thing and bring back Jim.

Lisa Mon, Jan 26, 2009 at 05:48 AM EST

HERE HERE!! i agree! its that simple. bring jim back and not only will the ratings go back up but all the fans will be happy.

Caitlin Mon, Jan 26, 2009 at 05:46 AM EST

Im also an Australian viewer and i think i speak on behalf of all Australian ghost whisperer fans and american ones too when i say just bring jim back already!!!!!!!!

Pete Mon, Jan 26, 2009 at 05:44 AM EST

All i can say is that jim better come back otherwise im done and im sure a whole lot of other people will be done to. the whole we would never do anything to betray our audience well they did that the moment they killed the jim and melinda relationship. He better cone back other wise the show has gone to the scrapers. and i agree that its a shame because i also love jennifer love hewitt and the show but not without jim!

Melissa Mon, Jan 26, 2009 at 05:40 AM EST

all i have to say is that if jim doesnt come back AS JIM!! than im doen with the show. The writers better have him come back and he better be back with melinda because their relationship is the REAL heart of the show!!!! BRING back jim and melinda!!!! soon. The coma idea is good. i would be happy with that. As long as jim comes back to melinda in JIMS body and SAM and NIKKI are gone FOREVER!!! than the show will be good again. until that day the show has lost its touch which is a real shame because i love jennifer love hewitt. BRING BACK JIM

Lucy Mon, Jan 26, 2009 at 05:29 AM EST

Im an Australian veiwer and watch the season 4 online. I AM SHOCKED they killed jim off. I agree with the coma idea. COME ON GUYS!!!! you have given the show a bit of a shake but enough is enough, either give us the jim and melinda relationship back or loose most of your viewers. Jim and melinda is one of the main reasons a lot of people watch the show. He better not be sam forever because if he is im done with the show. JIM needs to come back in his own body and come back to melinda not that stupid nikki chick.
BRING BACK JIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

mattie Sat, Jan 24, 2009 at 04:37 AM EST

I think the writers have done a great job on making the show MORE romantic. Life has twists and turns, and I have read that souls can inhabit a different body. It doesn't matter; there is a new excitement, they don't seem to be dragging it out too slowly, and we still get to see Jim every week. I'm just glad it's still on.

Dennis Thu, Jan 22, 2009 at 11:25 AM EST

I used to watch the show. Melinda would have been upset at Jim for doing this. Not trying to get back with him. She chased away all spirits. The show is dead to me. They ruined it. first with Jamie Kennedy now Jim Dead. Bring back Payne

Karen Mon, Jan 19, 2009 at 09:31 PM EST

Hey, here is a great way for the writers to get themselves out of their mess they made. Melinda was sleeping in the chair next to Jim's bed. She was dreaming and Jim hasn't died. (Do Not Kill Jim Off.) He's in a coma, and he's able to come to Melinda and work with her on her ghost stories. You want romance? Make Jim and Melinda want to be able to hold each other and touch, but unless Jim comes out of that coma they can't. There are a lot of great stories that could be created out of this story line and the romance you seem to want to give those of us who watch every week, that I wasn't aware was something we were lacking. I can't believe you would get rid of her best friend Andrea, who was supportive of her gift. You got rid Professor Rick Payne and now Jim? You are taking all who endeared us to the show away and left us with Deliah who doesn't truly believe in all the other world events. It's like you're trying to make a whole new show with just the main character.

Tracy Mon, Jan 19, 2009 at 01:19 PM EST

Ok - when I first heard that Jim was getting killed off I was a little sad. I bawled when I saw it - and then hopeful when i saw his ghost. But it should have ended there. Her telling him to go into the light and he finally goes.
This whole thing of him being in a different body is really stupid. I still watch but the writing is crappy - the shows have lost their edge. I'm not enjoying it anymore. Since they did go and kill off Jim they should have this Sam guy be a love interest (even though from what I've seen of his face in the mirrors and stuff doesn't seem like Miranda's type.) Is that Payton Manning? LOL

Lilly Mon, Jan 19, 2009 at 01:05 PM EST

I gave the whole Jim being dead thing a shot, but I don't really like it. It's like I just watch waiting for it to resolve, I have enough pain in my real life and to watch the two of them be in pain for an hour every week is taxing. i know it's a show and it's a journey, but there needs to be a resolution BEFORE the season finale... or it will end up being the SERIES finale.

John Sat, Jan 17, 2009 at 11:48 AM EST

Agreewhith everyone, this is going nowhere. It's getting every hard to watch this now.Better do something quick or you're going to loose your audience, unless that's what you want to do.

mopgirl Fri, Jan 16, 2009 at 09:12 PM EST

I agree with everyone else. You are ruining the show. I hope this is a dream and Melinda is going to wake up and Jim is still alive. This whold Jim/Sam thing is stupid. We are supposed to watch Melinda be with this guy that we know isn't Jim and doesn't even look like him, except to her. I'm done with this show. It's ruined now.

Fri, Jan 16, 2009 at 07:29 PM EST

Well, as much as I have tried, I'm just not enjoying the GW anymore. This new story line with Jim/Sam was a big mistake. I have missed most of the shows since Nov., and the shows I do watch aren't very good. Pity. The writers made a big boo-boo with this one. I would think the shows ratings are way down by now.

Fri, Jan 16, 2009 at 07:29 PM EST

Elaine Hawkins Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 10:46 PM EST

Do you have any idea of what you have done? FIRST...letting Jim die and then worse than that....putting him in another body. Jim was the safe place and the love that Melinda had to go to after some of her difficult ghosts she had to deal with.
I'm sorry, but whoever is responsible for writing that script should be fired. I'm no longer a watcher...unless you find a way to bring Jim back in his own body.
How stupid to ruin such a good program and a loving couple.

Chris Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 05:24 PM EST

I agree with everything people have said. Its sheer stupidity to kill off Jim, especially when we were so looking forward to him and Melinda having a child! Stupid, stupid, stupid. So, if they can bring back Bobby Ewing after 2 years I'm sure the same can be done for Jim. Doubt I'll continue to watch if David Conrad leaves.

Shannon Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 02:57 AM EST

Okay....I get it. But not at first. I was just as upset as the other fans of the show. I swore I would not watch GW again since Jim was no longer in it. I just didnt understand WHY? But, said that, I get it. I see the creative writing, I see the possibilities and I just cant wait to see what happens next. I am a bit concerned how they are going to make two diffrent actors become one person after Jim remembers who he is. I will keep watching until it reveals itself. I have never cried so much!! I love how personal you make it and draw the viewer into Melinda's sorrow and desperation. I love how you had to convence Cameryns character that Sam is Jim! So touching. I am a huge fan...so please please take it easy on us. I look forward to where you take us.

Linda Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 01:41 PM EST

I think the writers are morons. I loved the show and the ruined the best part. Every week there were deaths, including Melinda's best friend. But it was a mistake to kill off Jim and the guy that is supposed to house his soul is ugly!

Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 12:27 PM EST

really disappointed in the recent storyline, how could you let jim die?! he was the one person who melinda opened up to and their relationship was so passionate. Thats what made the show so good! it was such a bad decision to kill jim!

Yvonne Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 01:40 PM EST

Hi;

I'm trying to stay with this series, I have the first 3 on dvd, but I don't understand the whole idea of killing off Jim. There's a funeral without Melinda's mother or Dr. Payne and that's not right. Melinda isn't morning because Jim is Sam, Whatever! and she's always so quick to want to see him. I hated it when Andrea died, now Jim. What's up with that. Does James Van Prague think spirits should take over other peoples bodies? I think that makes everything seem untrue and no possible way can that happen. That makes the whole idea of Ghost Whisperer seem fake. Sorry producers, I think you blew it. That's the shame in all this!

isnabela Sat, Dec 27, 2008 at 12:07 PM EST

HOW COULD YOU?!!! SOMEBODY BETTER "WAKE UP" FROM THIS NIGHTMARE - Be it Melinda or Jim - either way - please RELEIVE your watchers and PUT JIM BACK WHERE/AS HE BELONGS: The loving, supportive husband of a ghost whisperer who's job it is, is to save lives, not lose his own. WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU THINKING??!!??

Wessieanne Fri, Dec 26, 2008 at 08:52 PM EST

So disappointed in the show!! My boyfriend and I rented every season after watching it on T.V. just because we love it. GIVE US BACK OUR SHOW!! GIVE US BACK MELINDA AND JIM!! let them have a baby that would be an excellent story line with Melinda showing her child how to use the "gift", Just like Melinda's Grandma showed her. The writers are messing up badly!!

I think that who ever decided to write this story that involved the death of Jim needs to go back to college. They are stupid and need to re-educated them selves, or is the old saying that they are so educated that they are ignorant true. The writers do not know what works or they don't care, and wants the show to be canceled.

Paul Tue, Dec 23, 2008 at 09:37 AM EST

I miss this show. Tried to watch pieces of the past few episodes but can't get through more than a few minutes. The asinine treatment of Jim just over shadows all the rest of the story lines. This new character is not Jim. I don't care what trace past life memories he may or may not remember in the future.

Patty Mon, Dec 22, 2008 at 06:10 AM EST

I've tried watching GW twice, since Jim "died". The show is just no good anymore.

Wed, Dec 10, 2008 at 07:06 PM EST

I watch Ghost Whisperer every Fri. I live for it all week and am continuing to watch it. I don't know for how long though. I am very upset that Jim's character died. I want it to be a bad dream or something that Melinda suffered. I dont know how to fix it but do something!!!!!!!

Rond Mon, Dec 8, 2008 at 12:16 PM EST

Okay, the first episode when Jim died kind of peed me off. I am the type of person that believes everything is not black and white. The grey area has many possibilities, so why not. Just as long as David don't go anywhere. lol

Martha MacBurnie Sun, Dec 7, 2008 at 05:14 PM EST

The show has definitely jumped the shark. It's creepy beyond words that Jim jumped in a dead guy's body. Now he's going to be a handyman with a memory problem? In some less-attractive guy's body -- who nobody in town recognizes? His family just wrote him off & left? And nobody seems to miss Jim except Melinda. Creepy! Please have either Jim or Melinda wake up from this "death dream" -- reboot this sorry excuse for a Season. We love GW & look forward to it every Friday. Give us our old show back! Losing Andrea was bad enough. Then Professor Payne. Their replacements aren't as interesting. It seems to be a trend on this show, doesn't it?!

Patty Sat, Dec 6, 2008 at 12:51 PM EST

Last night's episode had me in tears again. The acting from all the characters was phenomenal. I feel sorry for any fans that chose not to watch anymore episodes. They missed a really good. I will continue watching as long as David Conrad is in the picture.

Jeff Fri, Dec 5, 2008 at 10:59 PM EST

I am a huge fan of David Conrad's it's a shame you had to kill his character to give him more air time but hey at least now we get to see him and not just watch him walk in and out of a scene. Keep this story going as long as you can!!!

carol Fri, Dec 5, 2008 at 08:22 PM EST

Please Jim is dead let him cross over. Bring back Professor Payne.

Michelle Fri, Dec 5, 2008 at 05:45 AM EST

This story with Jim is so lame I literally can't stand to watch it now, and I really resent that because this and 24 were the only two shows I watched. It was bad enough when 24 killed all the good characters and turned into garbage, now this one stinks too. Way to go, hollywood writers. Where you ever got the idea that people are "entertained" by having their favorite characters killed, I'll never know, but guess what...WE DON'T FIND THAT ENTERTAINING. Duh.

SB Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 11:13 PM EST

I felt better after the last episode where the ghost told Melinda this was her reward for all the good she does for all the other ghost. But how can she go on with this character in a future life...any possiblity of continuing on with children will be unbelievable because his body is this blond guy and Jim in the opposite so how can she have a baby with the Jim spirit in the other body knowing he is so different. That part doesn't make sense nor do I understand how you would fix that...Couldn't you have at least made the dead guy look a little like Jim? Wow now you have me crazy...great show though!

Chris Thu, Dec 4, 2008 at 06:40 AM EST

I'm convinced that Hollywood writers hold contempt for traditional, loving marriages and just can't bear to leave a great one, like Melinda and Jim's, alone. Somehow, they always find a way to ruin it, so I guess it was just a matter of time before this one went down the crapper. Here's hoping the ratings hit the wall. I have no intention of watching anymore unless and until they figure out some way to un-do the mess they've just made of this show. Good luck with that.

P.S. Jim in another person's body? Nice shark-jump, on top of it all.

Ron Mon, Dec 1, 2008 at 02:24 PM EST

A Note to TPTB: How have you not betrayed the loyalty of the fans? What was once, for me, one of the most intriguing and anticipated hours on television has now become a hollow and empty void. The "Ghost Whisperer" I have followed since its debut had become one of the smartest shows on television, an homage to classic dramatic anthology series of the past. Now, however, the newly-revised "Ghost Whisperer" has opted to rely on cheap gimmicks. You deny David Conrad is leaving the show, but he has been quoted saying he has not yet been informed if he will be asked to return next season (Pittsburgh Post Gazette; 11-9-08.) You asked viewers to hang in there. I have hung in as long as I can, and I find nothing remotely familiar to indicate to me that the show that earned my loyalty remains worthy of it. I hope you and your team find satisfaction in the number of viewers you have alienated. After all your trouble, it would be a shame for such hard work to have been in vain.

Chris Sun, Nov 30, 2008 at 03:33 PM EST

Not everthing has to revolve around death for a character to experience loss. Here's a possible story line without having to have killed Jim off: Jim goes on an out of town fireman/paramedic conference. He joins in an effort to rescue victims from a burning building. He gets konked on the head and loses his memory during the rescue attempt. He is thought to have died in the process but it is actually another victim. Jim survives but in the chaos is lost. He is taken in by a kind stranger. One of the victims Jim tried to save becomes a ghost. Before he can pass into the light he has to get Jim and Melinda back together again even though they are miles apart. Imagine that - a Ghost helping Melinda this time around. Jim and Melinda are reunited but his memory is slow to return and they start again from scratch. There you have it - romance and suspense without the emotional toll on the viewers by having Jim's character die and Jim's character still gets plenty of air time. Thanks!!

Kim Sun, Nov 30, 2008 at 12:37 PM EST

This story line was very disappointing to say the least. What a wonderful relationship fantasy that we tuned in to every week. The relationship between these two characters will be missed. I am hoping not to lose interest but this ridiculous story line is not very appealing. Please "wake" Melinda up from her "dream" and get on with our perfect romance. Which for me personally was one of the great things about this show. If only every girl had such a wonderful, caring man. That's why we watch fantasy TV! Why fix what isn't broken. Bring back Jim as JIM!

Debbie Patnoe Sat, Nov 29, 2008 at 12:13 AM EST

Killing off Jim was the biggest mistake this show could have made. PLEASE consider rewriting this as a dream sequence and have Melinda wake up and find Jim next to her in bed!! The show will never be the same...

Sallie Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 11:54 PM EST

I AGREE WITH GW VIEWERS WHO SAY ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. I LOVED THAT SHOW. (I EMPHASIZE THE WORD LOVED). THIS SHOW WAS THE HIGHLIGHT OF MY WEEK. IT WAS SO NICE TO SEE MELINDA HELP OTHER LOST SOULS. IT WAS SO NICE TO SEE THE COZY RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN JIM AND MELINDA. I AGREE WITH MOST OF THE COMMENTS I HAVE READ ON THIS SITE. YOU HAVE LOST ME AS A VIEWER. I TRIED TO WATCH THE LAST EPISODE. JIM GOING INTO ANOTHER MANS BODY. OH COME ON NOW. I AM DONE. I AM SAD. I REALLY LIKED THIS SHOW. TOO BAD WRITERS CAN'T LISTEN TO THE VIEWERS. AGAIN IF IT AIN'T BROKE - DON'T FIX IT. YOU FAILED WRITERS. YOU LOST LOTS OF VIEWERS INCLUDING ME. I AM SO SAD.

CT Fri, Nov 28, 2008 at 11:36 PM EST

Very disappointed in this story line. You finally get a relationship on tv that works, without the sit com put downs that are usually in relationship, and you throw it away. People like to think there is something nice about a relationship that works, but oh no, that won't work for you guys, you have to shake it up. You had a perfectly good story line regard Melinda and Jim, and how they cope with their(her) gift, and his job was perfect for the situation. No matter what you come up with, it will never be the same. I don't know if the actors wanted to leave or you wrote them out, but you keep making bad, bad, decisions. You had the first lady that worked with Melinda killed off (she was fantastic, and the character was perfect with Melinda.) Then, you write out Jay, who brought something to the plot. The other two new comers, Melinda's helper, and the man who hears ghost, as nice as they are, they are not great in their roles. Now its like you killed Tom Hanks in a Meg Ryan/Hanks mov

Erica Hawkins Wed, Nov 26, 2008 at 01:25 PM EST

I gave it a try, but if she doesn't "wake up". I'm done with the show. This storyline got really ridiculous all of a sudden and I believe like myself, alot of folks are going to bail.

Paul Wed, Nov 26, 2008 at 10:02 AM EST

Sorry, folks, I have tried. I don't like it. I still have not finished watching the last episode. I keep hitting pause. It is just so contrived. Jim is dead and Melinda is donating his stuff. How exactly do you assume someones body and life so easily? Everyone else is sorta standing around with their fingers up themselves. No, the magic as well as the ghost is gone.

russ123 Tue, Nov 25, 2008 at 09:14 AM EST

i think what they did has good and bad things to it. it challenges mel and it gives jim/sam more to do but how are they going to continue to keep that story line interesting and fresh? it will eventually get old and boring and then what will they do? i hope the show doen't get cancelled!

Jim character had been a redundant lately and it's good to 'kill' that character actually. Maybe this new Jim/Sam character will see ghost too. I'm really looking forward. If Eli could hear the ghosts, why not Jim/Sam? GW is still one of my favourite shows but personally, I think the show should stop at Season 5. Usually, after 5, it will be stagnant. Whatever it is, I still like the show because of the messages. Keep up the good work and Jennifer Love Hewitt is a very good actress but unfortunately she seems not so eager to be that overly famous.

K.C. Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 03:55 PM EST

I am not going to give up watching, david conrad is NOT leaving so for me thats cool.
There are a few things that i am hoping to get anwsers to....
For 1...wer was melinda's mom thru all this
2...ther are still the under ground souls which i am sure will not stay quiet
3... why does melinds never visit jims grave or mention his ashes if he was cremated

Ther is a lot of plot holes that need filling i cant wait to see were this is headed TPTB .... dnt let us down

Elizabeth Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 12:30 AM EST

I want the old Jim back. I loved that character and the dynamic between he and Melinda. I am furious that the writers have messed with that winning formula. That said, I will keep watching now that they have assured us that they won't be taking that relationship away. Lets just hope they keep that promise!!

Mel Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 02:04 PM EST

I also liked the episode heart and soul, and i will keep waatching. people need to remember that this is a fantacy show.
A lot of people are saying this story is hard to believe... why the hell watch a programe about a girl who can speak to the dead, come back from the dead by a group of children, live in a town thats built on top of another town full of demons, and go inside a computer game. if you have trouble with beliving in fantacy storylines. Yes it is just a show and a good one at that. this story will only get better, jump on bored and enjoy it you might like whats coming up next !!

andrea Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 01:48 PM EST

I have to say that i was very concerned about the whole jim /sam thing. I didnt like the idea of him not being our old jim and was set to lose heart in the show. but i wached heart and soul and was suprised, I ACTUALLY LIKED IT!!!!
it open up the show and im gonna keep watching to see were this is going. i have a feeling there is a lot more to this. i hope fans continue to watch also, it a brilliant show with excellent actors. well done ghost whisperer!!!

clancy Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 01:38 PM EST

The writters cant win can they! People moan that david conrad didn't do much on the show, and then they rant about if he gets killed off and leaves the show they wont watch. the writters give david a challanging story wer he comes back from the dead to be with melinda and guess what fans still arnt happy. David hasnt left the show and he is on it more, so come on fans have an open mind and enjoy the new storylines its only the begining of the season no body knows whats going to happen. i saw the episode heart and soul and i liked it, its opend up a way of envolving the actors more, delia for one. Stop ranting about leaving the show because you might enjoy it. true fans will continue to watch.

Von Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 09:14 AM EST

There is no unborn baby. Jim had given her the vitamins or whatever, they had planned to make love at the cabin, but due to the bridegroom being found out as a liar, everyone left the site of the wedding, so Jim and Melinda did not spend the night and that is where Jim was shot when he went back to help clean up by putting away folding chairs from the now canceled outdoor wedding, then died that night at the hospital.

Von Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 09:09 AM EST

I have stayed tuned and love the turn of events since Jim's death. I am 59 years old so remember how ticked off the viewers were when one season of "Dallas" allegedly turned out to just be a dream. It was so ridiculous that the writers of Bob Newhart's sitcom used it in the final script for that show, having him wake up in bed with the actress who had played his wife on his previous sitcom and start telling her about the dream he had just had. Melinda gets a second chance with the man she loves. This show is about ghosts, a result of death, and death comes to everyone. I am in my chair every Friday night in time for the opening credits and will continue to be. I would recommend folks tune in to see what a great job the writers have done with this.

Max in the Midwest Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 06:08 AM EST

I have 7 year old twins and when they make a mistake or screw up they always say they want a "Do Over". Question to GW writers - Can't you rethink the direction you're going with this show and just take a "Do Over" ?? Just go back to the way it was. We're forgiving; we'll accept any storyline "Do Over" even if its ridiculous - you can even make it as ridiculous as that cop shooting Jim, or Jim's funeral. Just fix it - we don't care how you do it.

Gloria Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 05:44 AM EST

The Jim and Melinda relationship started to weaken and wither right around the end of season 2. I had always hoped the writers would make it stronger again like it was in the first 2 seasons, but season 3 was boring. I pretty much stopped watching regularly in season 3, but tuned in this year to see if they were really stupid enough to kill off Jim. Wow, CBS - you didn't fail to disappoint. This was probably going to be the last season for the show anyway, so they thought they should change it up and watch it die a slow painful death.

WTF? Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 05:35 AM EST

What have the producers done to this show? How stupid was tonight's episode? I don't get why the producers/writers/whoever okay'd this storyline with killing off David Conrad/Jim, but the people responsible should be fired. No more David Conrad, Plus, you replaced him with a guy that isn't even good looking! I won't watch anymore, not even to see the train wreck its about to become. Who cares.

lori Sat, Nov 22, 2008 at 04:08 AM EST

Ok, I watched tonight to see what would happen. Hoping beyond hoping it would all be a dream. I want JIM back, not him in another body. This is the most disappointing show. I have even cried over it. Well, I hope your happy with the direction. I don't understand why you can't just leave well enough alone. Obviously, others feel the same. Doesn't that tell you something? If you really cared, and the stars cared, you be hauling you butts, to make new episodes for this blunder, and have Melinda wake up from this nightmare. In any event, this was my last night, I am through, I can't take it and or condone it, by continuing to watch.

Mitch Berdinka Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 11:31 PM EST

The show is on right now and I refuse to watch it. You've ruined the show for me. I gave it a chance last week, but I'm not buying it. You've lost me for good.

Carl Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 10:27 PM EST

"Simonds: The audience is not going to feel betrayed or in any way disappointed as they're watching this show." I am a fan of the show from the first episode, I feel betrayed and disappointed.

GWfan Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 07:29 PM EST

Why oh why do I keep subjecting myself to becoming involved with these TV shows only to have them go to hell? I feel just like I did when they canceled Moonlight and Jericho. Oh yeah. Those were all CBS shows, weren't they? Maybe I should just stick to ABC and FOX from now on! :/

Janis Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 03:12 PM EST

I have been thinking for a while that Jim (the actor) must be bored to death! He is such a secondary character -- a good character mind you, but nonetheless a secondary one -- that I can't imagine how his role as the perfect husband could be stretched any more. Him hanging around in somebody else's body, or even his own for that matter, is just stupid. Let him leave the show if he wants to, and let Melinda look for a new guy for a season or two. I hope they don't write in a baby -- a baby is just a complication that really would not add much to this venue.

Sugarsnap Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 01:10 PM EST

The writers are obviously more concerned with getting new and curious viewers than to develop and satisfy the loyal fans. There are other ways to do both than killing the only rock in the show. This kind of stunt usually never turnes out well when it's a love saga like Melinda's & Jim's (it's like killing off Scully, Bobby Ewing etc.) Melinda's character has suffered enough. Leave her alone. Create the "new directions" within the storyline instead rather than the characters. If you wanted to bring M & J's love to another level, this is a pretty stupid way of doing it.
Too many shows has been put to sleep due to writers killing the nerve of the show. Look at Gilmore Girls and how the new writers screwed with that! And also - look what happened to them.... I've had it. No fun, no matter what they do. I don't care to follow or getting involved in a love story that's doomed. Love between ghost and a real person as never ended well. Only a loooooooong good bye in sight.

Leslie Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 03:01 AM EST

I am also very disappointed in what has happened with GW. They need to just do an episode where Melinda wakes up from this nightmare and everything is okay. They could have challenged that relationship in other ways. I loved seeing how Jim and Melinda were completely in sync and completed each other so well! Now I'm not sure I'll continue watching, even if he does come back in someone else's body nobody will forget this and what nonsense it makes!

Mike Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 05:05 PM EST

Crazy. Why ruin a good thing. I liked Quantum Leap when it was on, but this is Ghost Whisperer, why ruin the format. This has been done before. I'm through with GW.

Corina Tue, Nov 18, 2008 at 04:17 PM EST

The best part of the show was the love between Melinda & Jim. It wasn't too "perfect". Those of us in the "REAL" world actually have marriages like that and it was nice to see a husband and wife so devoted to each other. I can't even imagine my husband dying and so its so heartbreaking to me to watch Melinda go through this (I can't quit crying). We watch TV to escape and relax a little and seeing someone totally heartbroken and without the love of her life just isn't right. I don't think that I can watch anymore. Doesn't anyone care what we the fans think?

Etha Tue, Nov 18, 2008 at 03:19 PM EST

Remember the hall with the different doors? well he should have used one to go save thst girl. Then he would not have been shot.

On the other hand... I wouldn't mind watching Jim and Mel fall in love again. It is just the fact that I loved Jim Clancy's character. The fact that he was a paramedic opened so many possibilities. There is nothing wrong with a long happy marriage you know... if you wanted a fresh meeting and falling in love you could have explored the past in the halls before he found his way back and changed his doomed destiny.

Paul Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 06:05 PM EST

Jim’s soul getting back into his body is not an option. There is no rewind. There will be no baby of Jim's unless she is already pregnant. Bodies father children not souls. Does Jim just assume Sam’s life? There are three families watching, Sam’s, Jim’s and Melinda’s. Note to GW writers: people do notice when other people act out of established character without provocation! The writers really need to think about what kind of leaps of faith viewers are expected to take. I will not be leaping that far and based commentary from the boards not many others will either!

Lynn Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 04:41 PM EST

I don't know what the writers are trying to accomplish here. They have just destroyed a most beautiful relationship. Anything less than this all being a 'dream/nightmare' and Jim being alive and well in a couple of weeks, and you will have lost most of the fans of this show (including me).

andrea Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 02:44 PM EST

I have so many questions about this.... how is mel gnna explain to other ppl that she is wiv a new guy so soon? What was the point in the three rooms jim went into? He saw himself in room 2 why the hell didnt he jump in his own body???
Where on earth was melindas mom!
what happend to all the stuff from season 3 like gabriel and the unerworld. i hope we get answers soon i really love this show its my fav, hope it dont get cancelled. I also hope that he some how gets his body back not many ppl are going to buy this sam thing.

Kelly McKenna Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 12:14 PM EST

My daughter and my wife and I watch the show weekly and have enjoyed it for years, But this sudden twist was aweful..To see Jim killed off and jump into anothers persons body. We don't like the twist of events that are going on. We are concerned that you'll be killing off Jim completely. Jim makes up a great part of the show and the love that he has towards Melinda. We're really concerned about this strange twist. This use to be our favorite Friday night show to watch. What will we watch now? It just seems odd that you would screw with a good thing. Undecide in Edgewood WA.

Joe Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 10:32 AM EST

I, for one, am glad he's dead. He's a horrible husband should be; he degrades his wife wants her to his child and seems overly protective. I look forward to seeing how they do this and what affect long term it will have on the show. Good Luck!

Jump the Shark Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 10:20 AM EST

This show was one of my all time favorites.....UNTIL.....Jim dies and gets in someone elses body. Talk about Jumping the shark.

In the interview he says jumping the shark is when the show breaks the rules, right?! Well the show just did....we already saw a ghost take over someone elses body and the body ends up dying and the "soul" needs to go into the light. How can "Jim" survive in the body and continue a relationship with Melinda. This show lives in the unbelievable but this just sends it over the edge. I am removing this show from my TIVO list!!!

Maybe there is hope that she will wake up after her being shot?!?!?

Deborah Sun, Nov 16, 2008 at 10:27 PM EST

I agree! Make it be a dream. He is the best part of the show for me. I would like to have a man just like him. Jennifer is ok but not the reason I liked the show so much - he was. When he is done with the show I will be done with the show too. Ps. I don't believe for one tiny moment that this wasn't a ratings stunt. Too bad, I had only just started watching last season too.

Debbie Sun, Nov 16, 2008 at 09:23 PM EST

I have watched this show since the beginning and cannot for the life of me figure out what is going on. My fear is that Jim will remain in a ghost state or assume the body of someone else as in Friday's episode. I am trying to be patient but it is difficult. If Jim truely leaves the show I don't know if I will watch it anymore. Not because it would suddenly become a bad show because I really like Melinda. I miss Andrea and Jay Mohr character and they did the famous switch of characters playing Ned. I am definately not a big fan of Jamie Kennedy. Not a good substitute character. I will give it a few weeks to clarify the writers plan for the show but I am disappointed.

kz Sun, Nov 16, 2008 at 04:07 PM EST

im so sad that jim died but does nobody else feel that there is a lot more to this story line. I dnt like the jim in sams body thing but i hav faith that this will some how turn out ok. i mean come on people have an open mind its not a soap opra its fantsy any think can happen. jen and david are such brilliant actors i hope that the true loyal fans out there will stick around and see how this develops

carolyn Sun, Nov 16, 2008 at 12:15 PM EST

It is still not to late for you to fix this. Melinda could have been in an accident and " dreaming" this.
Boy, you guys made a bigggggggggggg
mistake.

Kristin Sun, Nov 16, 2008 at 03:47 AM EST

I HATE THE NEW STORY LINE!!! I AM SO SAD BECAUSE I LOVED THE SHOW. THERE IS NOT ONE POSITIVE COMMENT ABOUT JIM DYING!!!! WRITERS AND PRODUCERS NEED TO TAKE NOTICE.... I'LL MAKE ONE LESS FAN IF MELINDA DOESNT WAKE UP FROM A DREAM OR SOMETHING... THATS A PROMISE

linda Sun, Nov 16, 2008 at 12:42 AM EST

At first I was so mad at Jim's death and screamed at the T.V. "Noooooo!" but as it went on the next week I thought to myself that while I am upset he was killed, it could be interesting to see their love continue..with him realizing that he loves her even if he does not at the moment remember why...this happens in reincarnation also. Although you have to be re-born first...the way they did it reminds me a lot of the movie with Warren Beatty..Heaven can wait...but it still may be cool to watch them keep their love alive. As long as WE and Melinda can still SEE the original actor who plays Jim..then it might not be so bad after all..and I heard that they WILL have a baby!
