Exclusive: 'Desperate Housewives' Welcomes Gail O'Grady!

Sep 4, 2008, 03:20 PM | by Michael Ausiello

Categories: Desperate Housewives

Gailogrady_lThere's a cougar loose on Wisteria Lane! And not the Kim Bauer kind! The Kim Cattrall kind!

Sources confirm to me exclusively that the sublime Gail O'Grady (American Dreams, NYPD Blue) is joining the cast of Desperate Housewives as the cul-de-sac's newest troublemaker.

As I teased in this week's episode of Ausiello TV, her character -- which will appear on a recurring basis -- was originally conceived as a Mrs. Robinson-esque seductress who sets her sights on one of Lynette's rapidly aged twin terrors. I say originally because it's entirely possible some of those plans have changed.

One thing I know for sure:  O'Grady's alter ego will be married. Producers are currently casting the role of her hubby.

Anyone know what Tom Verica's up to?

Lynette needs to be killed off. She's a pathetic creature these past few seasons.

Diane Wade Tue, Oct 14, 2008 at 12:41 AM EST

Desperate Housewives is horrible this season. You better take a hint from "Dallas" and make this five year jump a bad dream. I hate the changes. Give us more lawn guy jumps Eva. It used to be sex, cheating, all the steamy stuff, now it's just BORING. And when did a kid barfing all over become entertainment. Disgusting!

Jac Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 07:59 PM EST

Aww, Jack and Helen. :(

lori Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 03:09 PM EST

What about Gale Harold this season? He's soooo SEXY!

They really need to start removing one from the cast everytime they add one. There's too much going on now. I do like Gail though...she was on an episode of Las Vegas last season and I thought she was rather attractive.

Rob Grizzly Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 10:22 AM EST

It's getting a little crowded on this show...

Did you see the ad for the new season? Trying to squeeze all 6 ladies into one shot.

You know why season 1 is still the best? Because 4 story threads is more than enough to juggle and develop good characters without having to add on more and more.

Bob Sun, Sep 7, 2008 at 10:13 AM EST

I can't wait for Season 5 to begin.

Rob Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 11:25 PM EST

FINALLY..a hot blonde on DH! Nicollette Sheridan is GROSS and a horrible actress, they should have hired Heather Locklear like originally planned instead of that C-lister Sheridan( with Locklear the part would have been upgraded center stage instead of second-banana status like with Sheridan). Gail O'Grady is no Heather but ALOT hotter and talented than Skankidan..lol.

Lissa Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 10:15 PM EST

I am so all set with Gail...Can't she play anything else than a milf? I know her and I guess it is the easiest part to play since it is how she lives her life. Time to move into some Different roles don't you think?

AC Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 09:50 PM EST

So is she also going to be in The Mentalist for the rest of the season? She's in all the commercials...

A.Starr Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 07:47 PM EST

Tom Verica is fine and working as a director nowadays...for any who were curious...

RANDY TODD Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 07:17 PM EST

I`M SO HAPPY TO SEE GAIL O`GRADY ON DH.I CAN`T WAIT TO SEE HER GO UP AGAINST" KATHERINE MAYFAIR",PAYED BY DANA DELANY.

Racheal P Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 04:09 PM EST

I am so excited for Gail to join the cast!!! I am looking foward to the season premiere for all the fall shows. I found this awesome video that will tide me over until late september. You can check it out at:

Ian Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 10:23 AM EST

I think Wilhemina Slater needs to drop by! There's some hot cougar action with a tint. Vanessa Williams is awsome! Maybe ABC can work something out. :)

Razor40 Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 10:15 AM EST

I wish there was a better reference to use than cougar. Milf has got old, also.

Gabrielle Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 06:40 AM EST

Cougar? Seriously enough with that ok?

Duchess of the Eixample Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 04:46 AM EST

Dang, i was so hoping it'd be Jimmy Smits!

quinn Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 12:29 AM EST

Ross, Nicolette Sheridan did NOT leave the show. She is on the new season, same as always - in fact, she will now be one of the "main" characters, instead of a supporting one. Her character only left town for a couple of episodes.

siis Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 11:27 PM EST

This show wasn't white enough, of course! You'd think that somebody darker than a paper bag would pop up after Dana Delany joined the cast. Carlos and Gabby's Latin flavor is where that begins and ends.

Heather Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 09:11 PM EST

Can we please drop the cougar term? It's so horribly demeaning and not funny at all.

Ross Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 09:11 PM EST

I liked Nicolette Sheridan. Since she left, I do not watch. They really don't need another trouble maker, Susan, Bree and Lynette do an overbearing job.

Ugh! Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 06:20 PM EST

I am so over this dang show when it comes to casting. You throw an excellent actress such as Alfre Woodard a craptastical story line and never again do we see a shade of color on this show. How about Jackee Harry or Robin Givens. Give this show a spark of color, I don't even care if someone black knocks on the door because they ended up on the "right" side of town by mistake, Mr. Cherry.

Not a Housewives fan Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 05:33 PM EST

I just had to comment that some of my favorite NYPD Blue episodes were the ones where Donna Abandando's sister, Dana Abandando comes to visit -- and tries to steal Donna's man, Detective Gregory Medavoy. The redheaded actress hiding under a huge teased 'do and a thick Noo Yawk accent was a young unknown named Debra Messing. I'm looking forward to "The Mentalist", even if it sounds a lot like "Monk" & "Psych", but without the OCD (Monk) and the ADHD (Shawn).

Brendan Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 04:42 PM EST

I just pooped my pants!

Lucy Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 04:42 PM EST

This is an amazing addition! Gail is a fantastic actress. I can't wait for the new season to "meet" her character.

Leo Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 04:14 PM EST

THIS IS THE BEST NEWS EVER!!!!!!!!

Lee Ivey Jr Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 04:13 PM EST

How may I become Gail's husband? Do I need to move to LA or New York to try out for the part?

mike Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 04:11 PM EST

Tom Verica has become a very accomplished Tv Director directing eps of some of the hottest shows including "grey's"

Michael, do you know if her pilot with ABC is still in contention? Because even if it goes it probably won't air before March. Steve McPherson said there will be more pickups from their development slate and her show (untitled David Hemingson show, recently titled "the Deep end") had some good buzz

Mike Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 04:03 PM EST

Tom Verica!? Yes! I've had the hots for him since he was on Central Park West (hottest one on the show in my opinion).

Knotmitty Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 03:57 PM EST

Gail O'Grady is an excellent actress and should one more outstanding talent to the series.

Roland Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 03:42 PM EST

Tom Verica, yes!! Or maybe even John Wesley Shipp?

coogan Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 03:04 PM EST

"There's a cougar loose on Wisteria Lane! And not the Kim Bauer kind!"

--ROFLMAO!!!! that opening line was one of the funniest things i've ever read on this site!!!! Kim Vs Cougar FTW!!!!!

Ryan O'Brien Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 02:52 PM EST

Awesome! On the DVD of "Matlock" season one, Matlock had to prove that she and her sister killed their aunt (That's not a spoiler, they show O'Grady kill her). She was stunningly gorgeous then as well, and wowed me with how well she played downright psychopathic. She will also be in the pilot of "The Mentalist"
