Five Reasons Scott Porter Must Be Cast as Ryan on 'Brothers & Sisters'

Aug 29, 2008, 12:57 PM | by Michael Ausiello

Categories: Brothers & Sisters

Scottporter_l_2 Ever since last May, when Brothers & Sisters revealed that Sally Field's philandering ex had produced yet another illegitimate child (this time for real), the hype machine has been in overdrive. What young actor, fans wondered, could possibly boast not only the charisma but the acting chops to go toe to toe with the ABC smash's heavy hitters? Now that the search has begun in earnest, I've seriously started asking myself that same question. The answer I've arrived at, with sudden, blazing clarity: Friday Night Lights' benched MVP, Scott Porter. Here are five (of a million) reasons why:

1. The character of Ryan is an all-American JFK Jr. type. In other words, a Scott Porter type. Executive producer Monica Breen tells me exclusively that the twentysomething charmer is "not completely sure of his place in this world, because of his very complicated past, but he's eager to find it and not afraid to fight for it when he does. He's a born leader." Kinda like -- oh, I don't know -- a certain former Panthers quarterback.

2. FNL's decision to sideline Porter after only four episodes this season leaves the leading man tantalizingly free to tackle another meaty role. Like, say -- oh, I don't know -- the new bastard on B&S.

3. There's nothing that Porter can't do. Drama? FNL -- duh. Score! Comedy? Um, did you see him sending up Wham! in Music and Lyrics? Enough said. Even action? Come on, the tension stretched across his face in Speed Racer was the movie's most authentically special effect.

4. There's nothing that Porter can't do well. Brilliantly, in fact. The depth of his commitment to a role is so breathtakingly complete, you can almost forgive him for being so impossibly handsome. (I said almost.)

5. On top of it all, Porter's one of the good guys -- not just a class act but also a bona fide sweetheart. At the Paley Center FNL event I moderated last Spring, he won me over with his impassioned thank-you speech to the viewers whose enthusiasm had helped the series pull off a Hail Mary renewal. Then he won me over all over again when he gamely re-enacted his cheesy dance moves from the "Pop Goes My Heart" music video.

Are you hearing me, B&S? Good. You can thank me later. Readers, you can go ahead and thank me now. Is casting Porter as Ryan the best idea in the history of ideas, or what?

Kathee Mon, Oct 6, 2008 at 08:22 PM EST

i read that Tom Pelphrey 2 time daytime emmy winner from Guiding Light tried out for the part. He really looks like the other sons and is a great actor. Hope to hear the news soon...

Chasper Mon, Sep 8, 2008 at 11:44 AM EST

Michael, I completely agree Scott would blow us away as the new Walker. I would also like to add: Scott Porter was on my short list (in the comment section) from your AA on August 19th.

Camile Sat, Sep 6, 2008 at 09:21 PM EST

yes! he is awesome!

pqp Sat, Sep 6, 2008 at 09:19 PM EST

Totally agreed!!!

Parker S Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 11:56 AM EST

YES! I can't wait till FNL comes back to NBC. I don't have any friends with Direct TV.

Amanda Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 07:44 AM EST

This is a good idea, but after watching the new 90210 last night, I think Scott could play Rob Estes 20 year old son, and half brother to Annie and Naomi!!! :) I think that could work out great!!! :) Either way, I'm going to miss seeing Scott on FNL. Or maybe he could end up on Lost with his SR costar Matthew Fox!!! ;)

Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 05:43 AM EST

JASON DOHRING!!!!!

Nina Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 03:54 AM EST

I don't think he would be a bad choice, but Matt Long would be better.

Roy Ryan Tue, Sep 2, 2008 at 04:35 PM EST

Spot on mate

LisaMama Tue, Sep 2, 2008 at 01:54 PM EST

LOVE the idea!

michael Tue, Sep 2, 2008 at 12:37 PM EST

was this guy in the original cast of ALTAR BOYZ?? if so, i saw him in it.

Jeff Tue, Sep 2, 2008 at 11:11 AM EST

I like Porter as an actor and would rather see him on a show I actually watch B&S is a bit sappy for my taste.

I'd rather see his comedic abilities used on 30 Rock. He could be the new guy that everyone pretends to hate as a group but secretly brown nose when they are alone.

Lauren Tue, Sep 2, 2008 at 09:38 AM EST

Gregory Smith would be great! Everwood reunion!

Ashley Tue, Sep 2, 2008 at 06:58 AM EST

Jesus Michael, no scoop since August 29th? I could see if what you do report is scoop gold, but it's all just kind of 'meh'. Wish I could get that many days off my job, or at least, go three days with nothing to show for my 'work'.

Lauren Mon, Sep 1, 2008 at 10:09 PM EST

Scott as Ryan is an awesome idea!

Mon, Sep 1, 2008 at 06:42 PM EST

JASON DOHRING!!!!!

Monica Iskandar Mon, Sep 1, 2008 at 01:00 PM EST

Um, I don't think so. He's too old and doesn't look like a good fit for the Walker clan. I still maintain that Gregory Smith is the best choice for Ryan. He's a fabulous actor and I miss him from the good old Everwood days!

Chelsea Mon, Sep 1, 2008 at 10:33 AM EST

Yes...yes...HELL YES!

Scott Porter would be utterly PERFECT for this part for the reasons you listed and more!

Carl Mon, Sep 1, 2008 at 10:20 AM EST

Get a room, Michael! I'm shocked that EW allows the pathetic ramblings of a desperate gay stalker like you to be posted on its website. This guy you're pushing for the role looks just like 10,000 other young actors in Hollywood. Plus he's too old for the part. Plus you just ruined his chances by slobbering all over him... Ugh! If I was him I'd be taking a shower after reading your column.

Diego Mon, Sep 1, 2008 at 07:47 AM EST

The best idea in the history of ideas has been the one to pick emily as rebecca :p

Ale Mon, Sep 1, 2008 at 06:56 AM EST

Wow, the rudeness of people knows no limit huh? It's part of the journalist profession to just and simply put out there debate topics for readers, and this is one of them. It's also, I find, an absolutely good idea, since Scott Porter is a great actor, and would definitely bring something great to the role of Ryan. Not to mention he'd fit in perfectly with the cast of B&S, made up mainly of really good actors. I said before my no.1 choice would be Scott Speedman, but Scott Porter would also fit in just great. So kudos for this idea Michael!

Kevin Mon, Sep 1, 2008 at 06:24 AM EST

That pic does him no favors Ausiello. He has "gayface" in that pic.

B- Mon, Sep 1, 2008 at 06:16 AM EST

Get a movie actor. Someone who won't mind going to TV for a minor stint. If not? Matt Cohen from "South of Nowhere" fits (description wise). He totally fits the JFK Jr. look. Check out his pics online. And that show is over and wrapped so he is available.

Harry Mon, Sep 1, 2008 at 12:49 AM EST

You got away with taking credit for Emily being cast as Rebecca, Michael. Shut up!

Let the casting people and producers do their own job.

Christine DC Sun, Aug 31, 2008 at 09:49 PM EST

I second the motion, you hearing this ABC? You would be blessed to have such a great actor and genuine person on your show. Ausiello is the best casting agent EVER!!

Leslie Sun, Aug 31, 2008 at 06:59 PM EST

No Logan from VM or Gilmore Girls. Both do not fit the role. I prefer Patrick Flueger or Matt Long.

Matt Long is a Berlanti alum who played Jack, who was meant to be like a JFK type character. He looks like a Walker too.

Dee Sun, Aug 31, 2008 at 04:45 PM EST

We are apparently on the same wavelength. Or since I thought of this last week, you have finally joined me on my wavelength. The moment I read the JFK Jr. type for casting, I completely thought of Scott. He's perfect. Thanks for publicizing that fact!

lorna Sun, Aug 31, 2008 at 03:54 PM EST

I rather go with Jason Dohring

Jack Sun, Aug 31, 2008 at 02:24 PM EST

and... he's h0t!

Hider Sun, Aug 31, 2008 at 01:29 PM EST

BEST. IDEA. EVER. I'm going to miss Scott on my TV every week after he leaves FNL. This is the perfect solution. He'd be perfect for the role.

Jess Sun, Aug 31, 2008 at 09:57 AM EST

Scott Porter's too old. I prefer Patrick Flueger.

Scott Sun, Aug 31, 2008 at 09:36 AM EST

While I would love to see Scott Porter in that role, there is someone else that I believe could play that role and it is Steve Sandvoss. He has guest starred on several tv shows but I think he would do great in this role!!!!!

Tara Sat, Aug 30, 2008 at 10:31 PM EST

I think Tom Pelphrey would be perfect.

Mary Sat, Aug 30, 2008 at 09:57 PM EST

I've never watched Brothers and Sisters, but as an avid fan of FNL, I'm sad to see Scott Porter leaving. If he does go to B&S, I would probably watch the show just for him. Like you said, he's an amazing actor.

Brian E Sat, Aug 30, 2008 at 07:20 PM EST

Wow. A more perfect casting I could not imagine. Kudos. He NEEDS to be on TV every week somewhere.

fj Sat, Aug 30, 2008 at 05:17 PM EST

anything that puts scott porter back on tv is a good decision.

elizabeth Sat, Aug 30, 2008 at 02:23 PM EST

YES!!!!!

rsm516 Sat, Aug 30, 2008 at 02:05 PM EST

As much as I love FNL and Scott Porter, my vote is still for Gregory Smith

Mandy Sat, Aug 30, 2008 at 01:02 PM EST

Jason Dorhing is the only choice for this role. One of my favorite actors on the show might make up for the debacle that is the whole Rebecca/Justin storyline...

Laura K Sat, Aug 30, 2008 at 12:34 PM EST

Thanks allie! At least someone's listening.

jenn Sat, Aug 30, 2008 at 11:19 AM EST

YES!!!! Brilliant. Would be excellent for Scott and the show.

brunaa Sat, Aug 30, 2008 at 10:48 AM EST

Scott is great! He would be perfect for the role!

Vanessa Sat, Aug 30, 2008 at 10:34 AM EST

Scott Porter would be a great choice!

Caitlin Sat, Aug 30, 2008 at 09:18 AM EST

Scott Porter > any other actor that could possible be chosen. He wins hands down!

Sat, Aug 30, 2008 at 08:53 AM EST

Yes!!! it's a GREAT idea!!!! LOOOOOOOVED him in "Music and Lyrics" and in FNL.

Brad Sat, Aug 30, 2008 at 02:52 AM EST

in the words of the eternal Veronica Mars:
True That!

Lee Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 11:16 PM EST

Michael,
I have to agree with you here 110 %. Porter is an incredible actor. I even loved him in "Prom Night" as Brittany Snow's boyfriend. The Walker role would be juicy, not just because it fits him perfectly, but also because then he can hook up with Emily Van Camp, causing a love triangle between two Walker guys-then we can have a blood test at the end of the season confirm that they are ALL, in fact, related. lol.

Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 09:49 PM EST

I love the idea of Scott Porter on B&S! Great call

drew Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 09:24 PM EST

I've actually been picturing Austin Nichols in the role since the season finale.

Thomas Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 09:11 PM EST

How about Eric Lively? He's got an "all-American" look to him, but he's also got a side that screams bad boy.

jay Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 09:05 PM EST

EW, do NOT want Jason Dohring on B&S...he would only be playing Logan again (like on Moonlight) and his creepy fangirls would petition for him to be the ~star~ like they did with VM. No thanks.

Scott Porter is an awesome choice! I'm definitely going to miss him on FNL so having him on another show would be great.

I also wouldn't mind Patrick Flueger from The 4400. Or hmm. Whatever happened to Mike Erwin? He was excellent on Everwood although I think Ephramy fans didn't really give him a chance.

Joan Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 08:54 PM EST

Scott Porter gets my vote. Great idea!

allie Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 08:09 PM EST

I just looked up Laura K's suggestion and yes, Alexander Carroll looks perfect! see http://www.imdb.com/media/rm766482944/nm1289674

allie Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 08:03 PM EST

I just don't see him as the hot JFK type. Sorry :-( In my mind Matt Cruzky (sp?) and Jensen Ackles (I know, he's otherwise occupied) are more of the all-American JFK Jr. type.

Kyle Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 07:52 PM EST

Ugh - again, the narcissistic prancing one can't resist inserting itself into one of its pathetic "scoops" ("When I moderated..."). Please make this gossipy, pathetic thing go away. It thinks it is influential, when in reality it is just a huge embarrassment to EW.

Roz Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 07:45 PM EST

You're asking me to decide between Scott and JDohring. That's just mean.

Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 07:23 PM EST

That's a good suggestion, but I want Jason Dohring

AJ Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 06:56 PM EST

Best idea I've ever heard from you, for sure. ;)

Porter is one of the most gifted TV stars of his generation, and I too feel he'd do really well on Brothers & Sisters. Good thinking there, Ausiello.

Matt Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 06:55 PM EST

Brilliant idea! One of those I Can't Believe I Didn't Think of It First things. You might be going 2 for 2.

Anna Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 06:17 PM EST

I would love to see Scott Porter as the new brother on B&S. He is too much of a class act not to be on TV.

Karen Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 05:32 PM EST

Yes! Scott Porter would be great as Ryan.

Peter Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 04:45 PM EST

HELLZ YEAH!

Josh Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 04:40 PM EST

DO IT DO IT DO IT! He would be PERFECT!

Malkin Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 04:02 PM EST

It's beyond brillant, is what it is :D

Laura K. Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 03:35 PM EST

No, no, no, no. Alexander Carroll. Look him up on IMDB. Perfect.

Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 03:24 PM EST

Michael - this is absolutely BRILLIANT!! Scott is amazing and would be a fabulous addition to B+S. This idea is so perfect the producers would be fools not to rush out and sign him!!

Pete Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 03:21 PM EST

Perfect. But would he do it? Something tells me he has an eye on a film career.

K Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 03:19 PM EST

Not a bad idea at all.

Thomas Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 03:18 PM EST

No! No! No! He's not a Walker!

Flávia Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 03:12 PM EST

I vote for Gregory Smith! I miss him so much...

CindyC Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 02:32 PM EST

Love Scott Porter and FNL - but for this role I'm still rooting for Jason Dohring.

ilan Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 02:31 PM EST

emile hirsch or ryan gosling (depending on the age the character is supposed to be.)
i know they are both film actors, primarily, but b&s already managed to bring in major stars (calista flockhart, rachel griffiths, sally field, danny glover...) it's possible. and it'd be frickin' awesome.

Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 02:29 PM EST

i like scott porter (and matt long, for that matter), but hasn't greg berlanti hinted that he'd like to bring chris pratt (bright, from everwood) on b&s? my pick would be john frances daley, maybe best known as sam weir from freaks and geeks. he resembles the walkers slightly, and i think he could convincingly pull off the idea of a character who doesn't quite know his place in the world or with his family.

Another Aushole Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 02:19 PM EST

I totally agree; he has brought as much authenticity to FNL as anyone and would make a GREAT Ryan on B&S!

Ale Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 02:17 PM EST

My no.1 choice for the role is Scott Speedman, but I absolutely LOVE Scott Porter (hey, two Scott actors!), and I think he would be terrific. I would for sure be very happy for both him and B&S if he landed Ryan's role. Love both Porter and Speedman, any of the two is a great choice to me.

Mel Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 02:15 PM EST

shut up ausiello and shut up now. jason dohring is made for this role.

Meg Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 02:06 PM EST

I am still pulling for Jess Burkle. He'd be perfect!!!

Drewgo Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 02:00 PM EST

I'm with Jennie, I think Matt Long would be a perfect "Walker"

amanda Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 01:53 PM EST

absolutely! he's adorable

Gina Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 01:42 PM EST

I'm for Jason Dohring or Logan from Gilmore Girls. I think one of the two of them would be fantastic.

Dennis Dziadowicz Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 01:34 PM EST

Anything that puts Scott Porter on TV every week is fine by me.

Dennis Dziadowicz Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 01:34 PM EST

Anything that puts Scott Porter on TV every week is fine by me.

Jill Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 01:31 PM EST

Genius. I've never seen FNL, Speed Racer or Music & Lyrics but you sold me. He seems adorable.

Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 01:30 PM EST

I want Matt Cru...something, Rory's boyfriend Logan from Gilmmore Girls, he would be perfect. I wonder if this character is gonn be rich, and be played like that, or if he is more poor. Anyway, LOGAN!

Jennifer Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 01:25 PM EST

Ausiello, you are the best supporter of FNL around. I appreciate any reference to the show and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I think this is an awesome idea. Scott needs a job and I think he would be a great addition to the show!

Kim Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 01:25 PM EST

I'm all for Scott being on B&S. I've only seen him on Friday Night Lights but I thought he was great there.

Allison Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 01:23 PM EST

hell yes, I'm on board with this casting choice! He would be wonderful.

Mallory Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 01:19 PM EST

Wow, Aus! That's a really inspired choice! You helped them score Emily- now go to work getting Scott on the show!!

Bob Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 01:19 PM EST

Um, the best idea in the history of ideas would have been for Rebecca to have been a REAL Walker. I say nay to any Ryan bullshit, and they cast a no name actor for three or four episodes and dispose of him immediately with occasional appearances from season to season. I'm not bitter or anything... lol

Kerri Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 01:19 PM EST

I love him on FNL and think its a great idea to bring him to B&S. I can definitely see him playing a Walker.

Bonnie Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 01:18 PM EST

He looks like the Walkers too! PERFECT CHOICE!

Adam Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 01:15 PM EST

I love your work Ausiello, but, man, can you be more creepier or unnecessary with this post?

paige Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 01:14 PM EST

I am so glad someone else see's this talent! sadly, I dont watch B&S and i dont think i will..

Tony Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 01:09 PM EST

Great casting choice. Besides, I think he resembles Tom Skerritt a bit.

Carly Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 01:07 PM EST

I'd love to see Scott on B&S!!! He's terrific.

Jennie Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 12:57 PM EST

Matt Long! He already looks like a Walker.

Lily Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 12:57 PM EST

It's okay but I would rather have Matt Long from Jack and Bobby.

Sara K Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 12:49 PM EST

::Scott Porter is 29. I think they need to find someone younger.::

I think he plays a 19 year old on FNL pretty convincingly. I think it's a GREAT idea! That is a super hot photo of him!

Melissa Fri, Aug 29, 2008 at 12:44 PM EST

amen to that!
