Exclusive: 'Private Practice' Paging Grant Show…

Aug 5, 2008, 06:10 PM | by Michael Ausiello

Categories: Private Practice

Grantshow_l Grant Show is trading in his polyester suit for some circa-2008 scrubs.

The Swingtown stud-muffin has signed on to appear in an early Season 2 episode of ABC's Private Practice, sources confirm to me exclusively. I'm told his character, a charming and flirtatious doctor, has ties to a Practice regular.

Fans of Swingtown need not panic though. Since this is just a one-off guest stint, it wouldn't interfere with Show returning for a second season of the CBS romp. Of course, given the show's dwindling audience, that's probably a moot point anyway.

Luckily, viewers won't be left hanging if the Aug. 29 season finale ends up being the last episode ever. "The season ends with a cliffhanger, but it's also a completely satisfying ending," exec producer Alan Poul told me at press tour. "So, if we go forward, there are many new things that are set up to explore. And if we don't go forward, there's no feeling that we've been left with something incomplete."

Getting back to Private Practice, any thoughts as to which Oceanside staffer has a skeleton in his/her closet resembling the pinup formerly known as Jake Hanson? And should Swingtown bite the dust, could you see him fitting in alongside Addison and Co. on a more permanent basis? Comment away!

Swingtown was my all-time favorite show, and Grant Show is my current fantasy--what a sexy guy. CBS kept switching the viewing dates and I missed the very last episode of Swingtown. I was crushed, so I when I found out a Swingtown DVD would be available in early December, I purchased it on-line. Can't wait to receive it. CBS is whacko for cancelling this show. So many others agree, as I have been reading on other web sites.

I watched 3 or 4 eps of Swingtown and at first I enjoyed it. I was a huge fan of Grant from Melrose Place so I was curious to see it. But the more I watched the more disinterested I became because most of the plots were basically the same and just seemed rather dull. Also I'm no prude but I frankly I did find some of the drug usage somewhat off putting.

Derrick Sun, Aug 24, 2008 at 10:57 AM EST

Kiss it goodbye. If there is one true thing about CBS management, stupidity would be it, As soon as a shows rating start to drop, CBS is all to ready to cut it and bring in something else. There only goal is MONEY MONEY MONEY... It's not about the viewers and the time we invest into a show if the advert profits are coming in, CUT!!!! Wait until CSI starts to drop with the exit of Grissom and the introduction of the arrogant Laurence Fishbourne, I'd rather pluck my eyes out then watch that happen. Swingtown is a great show, yes it's a bit risque, but that is history, you can't change it, all you can do is embrace it and realize we live in different times now, and have to be more responsible for ourselves. There is a common sense element to this, that the family groups always seem to forget while standing on their soapboxes preaching, keep it in the church, and if you don't like what your watching, it's the 21st century, you can change to one 200+ other channels.

Also, I think the soun

Am I the only one who likes the kids? Why are people (particularly those who support swinging) so judgmental about Laurie and Doug? Yes, she's a mature sixteen and he's in his EARLY twenties, but is that so much worse than some middle-aged guy and an 18 year old girl? The only reason statutory rape laws aren't based on intellectual and emotional age (as they should be) is so jerks like Johnny can fantasize about idiots like Jessica Simpson without guilt.

Johnny Thu, Aug 21, 2008 at 05:56 PM EST

Swingtown has saved my marriage. It has saved my television watching, it is the best show on tv right now.

The edginess is perfect for discussing with your wife. This show can convince any couple to explore a little of the dark and hot side of lovin'.

KEEP SWINGTOWN ALIVE!!! Get rid of the daughter, put the teacher in jail, and bring in a sexy foreign exchange student from Sweden (an 18 year old preferably).

Don't you want Trina as a next door neighbor? I do.

Joe Blow Thu, Aug 21, 2008 at 12:02 PM EST

SWINGTOWN is going down in flames - its doomed thanks to plummeting ratings. This show is like those creepy neigbors who drool while prowling the neighborhood look for SEX ! more SEX! These kind of people will jump your wifes bones after slipping her a quaalude if you arent careful.

Ali Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 04:05 PM EST

lauralu.
Word about David Sutcliffe. He is painful to watch. I didn't mind his character in Gilmore Girls, but I did mind the actor. He simply cannot act. He is like made of wood. Grant Show is like 100 times better than DS.

Pam Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 12:57 PM EST

Words can not express how I feel about Swingtown not being on for Fall. I love this show. This has been the only show that I look forward to every week since Grey's Anatomy. Great acting, great storyline. The 6 leading Actors were born to play their parts. Please don't cancel. What can I do to help save this show? I'm sick of reality shows. Other than the Mentalist, I don't see anything promising this Fall. Swingtown can leave the 70s and go into the 80s, 90s, and so forth. Such a shame. Help us EW please!

Sharon Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 04:49 PM EST

Swingtown is by far one of the best summer shows to come to CBS! I'd be crushed (along with the many millions of others who also love this show)!

Please don't cancel this show!

Killergawp Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 07:41 AM EST

Of course the ratings of Swingtown are going down - its summer and people are on vacation. I'm loving it and think it should continue. This show was suppose to come out much earlier than the summer, so I think CBS should give it more of a chance!

Lola Sat, Aug 9, 2008 at 12:26 AM EST

I absolutely love Swingtown. I know it won't survive on CBS, but I am hoping for a miracle and a cable outfit will pick it up.

lauralu Fri, Aug 8, 2008 at 02:52 PM EST

Please, please let Grant Show be a Private Practice regular - anything to push out the painful-to-watch David Sutcliffe, who was the only casting failure of Gilmore Girls and was being set up to be Addison's new love interest this season. I'm not sure I can keep watching with DS, whereas I'd be even more likely to watch with GS!

Marin Fri, Aug 8, 2008 at 01:47 PM EST

I love Swingtown, it's funny and I love seeing all those 70's trends I had forgotten about. I hope CBS gives it a chance...

PGP Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 03:15 PM EST

Swingtown is a summer show, and honestly I would love for CBS to make it a SUMMER staple like it has with Big Brother! For Janet alone Swingtown is fun to watch. Please CBS keep that show going. As for Show joining Private Practice, sure if Swingtown is canned, but whose to say he cannot do both anyway didn't Heather Locklear do it with Dynasty and a well TJ Hooker, and while on the subject Locklear would fit in nicely at Swingtown! Much better than Collins who is too old to mingle with our crew!

Carrie Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 11:43 AM EST

I love Swingtown. The pilot was a bit cheesy, but this really is a character driven show. I think the six leads are amazing. I could do with less of the kids, but there is definitely great chemistry and so much more ground to cover. Even if 4 million people are watching it -- isn't it better to start with some fans and let a show test its mettle in a 2nd midwinter season? Please don't cancel it, CBS!

JJ Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 01:00 AM EST

As much as I love Swingtown -- actually that's basically what I want to say -- I love Swingtown. It will be fun to see the terrific Grant Show on Private Practice, but what I really want is much, much more of him on Swingtown. Next summer? Please CBS?

belentot Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 10:53 PM EST

Grant Show rocks! Swingtown or Private Practice (or, heaven forbid, Melrose Place: The Next Generation)

Jill Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 10:04 PM EST

Yeah, CBS, move Swington from Thursdays 'cuz watching TV is what everyone is doing on Friday nights in the summer.

Swingtown is great. It is like an HBO/Showtime'ish drama, it builds and develops characters. It is not in a rush.

So of course the idiots will cancel it. But, hey, at least we still have Big Brother.

Swinging Fan Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 06:19 PM EST

I agree with others CBS is killing this show. The moved it to Fridays to finish it off. With all the crappy reality shows out there this is one of the old really good fun dramas. I agree with others PLEASE SHOWTIME, HBO ANYONE TAKE THIS SHOW AND RUN WITH IT. WE BEG YOU.

Kurt Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 02:37 PM EST

CBS is killing Swingtown on its own. Right when a bunch of my friends started watching it, they moved it to Friday when no one can see it. And it's really starting to gel and get past its CBS-flavored lame dialogue. But they'll let it die because there aren't any dead bodies on it.

Cleve Gallat Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 02:18 PM EST

Swingtown has an interesting set-up but it's missing a really strong villain to stir up some excitement. Maybe they should hire Joan Collins or Heather Locklear or have Janet go psycho. How about having Doug rape Laure? The show is just too bland!

Laura Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 02:16 PM EST

Agreed! PLEASE don't cancel Swingtown -

david Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 01:49 PM EST

I wish Swingtown were on a cable network where 4 million viewers would be considered almost a 'hit'...I don't want it to go away!!!

Kristen Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 01:13 PM EST

Well, after seeing Grant on a rerun of 90210 the other day, I think he looks just as good now, as he did then!
Also, while I love Grant Show, and I don't mind seeing him on Private Practice, I DO NOT want Swingtown cancelled! I LOVE that show! I seriously can't wait for it every week, it's so good. I'm really into the Laurie/Doug storyline, and the risque lives of Trina and Tom is GREAT! I pray that CBS doesn't cancel Swingtown!

Margo Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 12:31 PM EST

I hope that CBS does not cancel Swingtown too! I really have grown to love it. It's a great character development show, and I love seeing Grant Show too! Is it just me or has he gotten better looking since Melrose Place??

Chris Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 12:25 PM EST

Chris said we were going to meet more of Dell's family. His father maybe?

Alex Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 11:22 AM EST

What can we send CBS to renew Swingtown? Question mark necklaces? 70s mix tapes? Pot brownies?

angela Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 11:19 AM EST

I look forward to 'Swingtown' every week -- Hey EW, help us lobby to keep it on air!

Paula Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 10:37 AM EST

I love Swingtown! I grew up in the 70's. I also do not "see" the characters as people I knew. I do however have a greater understanding of the socio-political climate of the time. The show is not about "Swinging" per se but a view into the changing roles of men, women, marriage and the affects of the "hippie generation" and "women's liberation movement" on society in general. I hope those in charge will give the show a real chance to find its' viewers.

Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 10:23 AM EST

CBS... Swingtown Rocks!! Please don't cancel.

Dwood Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 09:46 AM EST

Grant still looks so fine!! If Swingtown gets cancelled, he'd fit right in with Private Practice!!

ryry Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 08:24 AM EST

The reason the ratings suck for Swingtown is because its Airing in the Summer!!!

Molly Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 08:11 AM EST

I LOVE Swingtown! I really hope it doesn't get cancelled. Private Practice is pretty good too, although it will never be as good as Grey's.

kimmie Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 08:11 AM EST

CBS--Don't cancel Swingtown. I don't understand why the ratings are so low. Lots of people are watching and getting hooked on it!! Give it a renewal for the Fall.

Ann Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 08:05 AM EST

What's wrong with TV execs who give life to lifeless "Private Practice" and let a really thoughtful drama like "Swingtown" go down the drain?

GA Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 07:48 AM EST

I watched Private Practive last season and was prepared to give it up this season. I thought it was horrible. But now that Grant Show will be on it, I will give it another shot. I really hope Swingtown doesn't get cancelled. It's almost like if it's not reality or a CSI/L&O type show, they don't last. BTW, where has Grant Show been hiding since Melrose? He is HOT!

Jen Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 04:00 AM EST

Given he's not the new permanent Dr that Shonda is looking to cast, I'm not too sure who he will be linked to especially if he is just there for one episode.

Regarding the 'skeleton in the closet' - maybe it is an ex-boyfriend of Addie's from med school ? Or someone from her elusive family that we know nothing about. Who knows !

C Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 03:08 AM EST

I love Swingtown, but more Grant Show anywhere is good news!

Evangeline Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 12:26 AM EST

It seems like Addison already has Hot!Cop and Pete.. So I'm hoping he's coming in for Charlotte. Because they would be a nice couple. (:

Dduellman Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 12:16 AM EST

Swingtown is dumb. I watched the first two episodes and decided not to waste my time. I grew up in the 70's and I didn't recognize a single character who remotely resembled anyone in my life.

Marie Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 11:18 PM EST

Great News - He would make a fantastic Dr. on a permanent basis and what would make it even a terrific series, bring Daphne Zungia (Melrose Place) in as a nurse and love interest for Grant. WOW!!

yolanda Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 11:00 PM EST

Grant is sexy and I would love it if Swingtown is renewed, but hey I watch PP as well so if he lands on there permanently the ratings will surely go up.

Amber Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 10:10 PM EST

On private practice, i bet he has a love connection with Violet. Everybody else has a love story as of now except her... he should be quite intresting on the show...

Carol Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 10:08 PM EST

Well good for Grant for parlaying his current visibility into another gig. I was a huge Melrose fan and it has been nice meeting up with him again on Swingtown.
I will also be very sad if it's not renewed: I have really come to care about the characters and will miss them if they don't come back. Everyone I know loves the show, how can the ratings be so dismal?? Would it be better off on cable or another network?

Tear Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 08:24 PM EST

I hope they don't cancel Swingtown, I love this show! Grant Show is Hot, Hot, Hot in his short shorts!

Jane Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 07:59 PM EST

Swingtown's numbers were horrible even before it moved. In fact, it's horrible numbers were why it was moved. I will agree that the move didn't do the show any favors though. Last week it was the lowest rated show on the network (including in the demo) aside from the Saturday shows.

UhhhhDUH Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 07:49 PM EST

Well of course the ratings for Swingtown have been terrible, they moved it to Friday nights. Summer shows struggle enough as it is without being put in the graveyard.

Kathy Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 07:33 PM EST

I hope this show stays on. I love the development of the characters and can't wait to watch every week. I actually watch it again via my computer a couple days after the show airs. I just can't get enough.

Remus Lupin Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 07:00 PM EST

Sorry, Swingtown fans, it doesn't matter how good you think the show is, the fact is that the ratings STINK. STINK STINK STINK. They really are utterly terrible and do NOT deserve renewal. Seriously, the show is bringing in like 4 million viewers for an episode... that is super pathetic. Horrifying numbers. It's a goner, 100% certain.

I hate to crush your hope and all, but the facts are facts. False hope isn't a good thing.

Catherine Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 06:48 PM EST

"Oh he is cute! I think he is there as a possible love interest for Addison. Shonda and Kate said Addison would be dating more." --> Possible, but if he really just stays for a guest appearance Addison won't be too happy with him.

Kristoffer Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 06:35 PM EST

It seems like its been so long since all these regular shows were on the air. I forgot her name on the show and who plays her - but she was always upset about someone leaving her. I bet he will play the boyfriend that left her.

As far as Swingtown goes - Of course they will cancel it - because it's actually a good show! Why keep a good show when you can have some reality trash on instead. Bring on more "I was a Bachelor Farmer who Wants a Wife that Danced with a Star on a Japanese version of Wipeout"

J Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 06:19 PM EST

Oh he is cute! I think he is there as a possible love interest for Addison. Shonda and Kate said Addison would be dating more.

Delon Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 06:16 PM EST

CBS please don't cancel Swingtown. PLEEEEEAAAASSSSEEEE !!!!

ILUVONJ Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 05:19 PM EST

Hope you're wrong about Swingtown heading out -- it's a show that I've become addicted to over this summer. Better than a lot of the regular season crap on the airwaves. Plus, for those of us who prefer not to watching dancing reality shows and could care less about who's going to release the next mediocre pop album, this show fills a void.

Though, it seems my friends and I might be the only ones watching. Get with the program (literally), people. This show rocks!
